How Academic Department Chairs View the Influence of Corporate Ethics Scandals on Ethics Education in Arizona Business Schools| A Qualitative Case Study at the Postsecondary Level

Gillis, Robert James 18 November 2017 (has links)
<p>Abstract The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore how department chairs described the influence of recent corporate ethics scandals on content and availability of ethics education in postsecondary business schools in Arizona. The following research questions guided this study: RQ1: How do department chairs describe the influence of recent corporate ethics scandals on the content of ethics education in postsecondary business schools in Arizona? RQ2: How do department chairs describe the influence of recent corporate ethics scandals on the availability of ethics education in postsecondary business schools in Arizona? RQ3: How do department chairs feel that ethics education can be improved in postsecondary business schools in Arizona? R4: How have postsecondary business schools in the state of Arizona changed their ethics curriculum in response to recent corporate ethics scandals? The sample for this study was 9 department chairs out of 40 in postsecondary schools in Arizona that offer business degrees. It was important for the purpose of this study to focus on department chairs, because of their direct involvement in the management of their business degree programs (i.e., design and accreditation of required curriculum), faculty, and business schools. The Hosmer and Kiewitz managerial ethics theory provided the foundation of this research. The data analysis procedure chosen was the thematic analysis from the triangulation of three data sources. The results found that a higher number of participants perceived that recent corporate ethics scandals did have an influence on content and availability of ethics education. Keywords: ethics, education, business, management, Arizona, scandal, corporate, social responsibility, post-secondary education

This paper analyzes the role of the Ethics Committee of the Federal Institute of Bahia, based on the regulations that guide its establishment and operation, and based on the conception of ethics applied to public administration, which includes educational nature functions, consultancy, preventive, conciliatory and punitive. This is an exploratory, qualitative, using the case study strategy, trying to analyze the actions taken by the Ethics Committee Sector in operation since 2007 and the critical points and challenges for this committee with a view of the servers of the Institute and members of the Commission, as well as analysis of cases transferred by the servers to the Commission. Were used as questionnaire data collection instruments with closed and open questions sent online to the servers with electronic registered address in the IFBA, semi-structured interviews with members of the Ethics Committee and document analysis. It was also used participant observation considering that the author of the research is member of the Ethics Committee. The results show among other things, for a significant number of servers that are unaware of the existence and the role of the Ethics Committee. Among those who know the Commission most consider that their actions are more preventive / educational nature than punitive. However, most of the servers specifies that already felt the need to search for the Ethics Committee to report conduct problems "unethical" but was afraid and fear of reprisals, showing the punitive character that still permeates the ethics in public administration. These results reinforce the need to intensify the process of disclosure and skilled workers in relation to the Management of Public Ethics and the implementation of joint actions with Systemic Directors of the Institute, considering that education for public ethics is task the entire institution.

Nový zákon jako zdroj etické inspirace v bestsellerech manažerské literatury / New Testament as source of ethic inspiration in bestseller books of management

Vavřina, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
The New Testament as a source of mediated ethical inspiration in literature management bestsellers. Contemporary management literature produced predominantly in the so-called western civilization circle, which is heavily influenced by Christianity. Work is to find and identify ethical inspiration coming mediated from the New Testament of the Bible into the centroid of managerial concepts described in three management bestsellers. As the titles were chosen Good to Great by Jim Collins, Competitive Advantage by Michael E. Porter and Critical Chain by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. The intention is also to achieve overlaps from selected bestseller managers into practical situations and examples that illustrate the elements of business management. The work is to find examples for explaining the positions of the authors in the light of mediated New Testament inspiration. We stand before the question of whether we can demonstrate to the attitudes of the authors the ethical significance of the concept of management and to underpin it by aligning with the ethical principles that we can guess from the interpretations of the New Testament. For selected bestseller, we try to find elements of managerial decision concepts that suggest that they are in agreement with ethical inspiration coming from the New Testament. We...

The public service anti-corruption strategy : a case study for the Department of Correctional Services

Webb, Werner Nicholaas 12 1900 (has links)
The South African Government in 2002 accepted the Public Service Anti-Corruption Strategy (PSACS) with the objective to reduce the manifestation of malfeasance in the public service. The PSACS identified various goals and objectives to be achieved at both the systemic and departmental levels. At the departmental level, the PSACS set out to increase the institutional capacity of departmental institutions, and encourage the management of risk and of discipline in the public service. Departments are required to establish the necessary capacity to formulate fraud prevention and anti-corruption policies, receive and manage allegations of corruption, and investigate allegations of corruption and detected risks at a preliminary level. To manage ethics departments should inter alia identify early signs of a lack of discipline, improve the accountability and capacity of managers to manage discipline, and encourage managers to act against transgressions. However, various authors have been critical of the formulation of policies and the establishment of structures as a policy response to public service corruption. In their view, such an approach often leads to a reduction in the efficiency and effectiveness of public programmes, and even creates opportunities for corruption. In response to such deficiencies, some argue that a compliance-based approach to public service malfeasance should be supplemented by a value-based approach with an emphasis on the development of internal selfcontrol of individuals, the promotion of trust among employees, and the promotion of a culture of responsibility. In this context, this researcher proposes that the promotion of an ethical culture could enhance the implementation of the PSACS. In this dissertation, this researcher set out to evaluate, among others, the ethical culture of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). It was decided that a survey would be the most appropriate data collection method. A questionnaire was administered and the data was captured, analysed and interpreted. Various statistical tests were performed and the findings suggest inter alia that the promotion of an ethical culture coincides with lower levels of observed malfeasance. Consequently, when greater clarity of operational and ethics policies is obtained, an increase occurs in both the severity and frequency of penalties for malfeasance, and officials gain greater access to resources and time to execute their responsibilities, the level of observed malfeasance is likely to be reduced. The promotion of an ethical culture could significantly enhance the implementation of the PSACS. / Public Administration / D. Litt. et Phil. (Public Administration)
