First year male students' personal experiences of senior male students' aggression in residences / Cornelia Twine

This qualitative research study explores and describes first year male students’ personal experiences of senior male students’ aggression in residences. In recent years, the aggressive behaviour of male university students has become a matter of concern for university staff. The aims of this study were (i) to explore and describe the nature of aggression as experienced by first year male students in the residences; (ii) to explore how first year male students’ experiences of aggression influence their day-to-day lives; (iii) to explore and to gain an understanding of how first year male students feel about living in the same residences as senior male students; and (iv) to make suggestions to assist first year male students to cope with aggression in residences. A qualitative design situated within an interpretive paradigm and employing a phenomenological approach to inquiry was employed in order to achieve the aims of the study. The research focused on exploring, understanding and describing the lived experiences of particular first year male students; the study was thus explorative, descriptive and contextual in nature. A purposeful random sampling strategy (Patton, 2002) was used to select the sample of first year male students who live in on-campus residences at the North West University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus to participate in this research study. A number of ethical requirements were met in this research study: approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the NWU Faculty of Education Sciences (Potchefstroom campus); and permission to conduct research was obtained from the Dean of Students on the (Potchefstroom campus), wardens of nine on-campus residences, the student council representative chairperson (SRC) and the residence primarius (chairperson) of each residence. In addition, participants’ interests were protected by ensuring their anonymity and obtaining their informed consent in writing before the research data generation process began. Visual ethics were strictly observed in taking the photographs which were used during the data generation process. The data generation process consisted of two phases: (i) photo-narratives (written) and (ii) photo-narrative-elicitation-interviews. Data saturation occurred after the fourteenth photo-narrative-elicitation-interview. The data analysis of the generated data was done by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis (Griffin & May, 2012). After a consensus meeting with independent coders, the two main themes that emerged were clarified. Theme 1: first year male students associate senior male students’ aggression in residences with feelings and emotions that vary from indifference to negativity, but they remain optimistic about the outcome of living with them. Theme 2: first year male students suggest strategies to cope with experiences of senior male student aggression in residences. In the last chapter, the researcher provides suggestions that could help first year male students to cope with senior male students’ aggression in residences. En litteraturstudie om vuxna patienters upplevelser av livsstilsförändringar vid diabetes typ 2

Diabetes typ 2 är en endokrin sjukdom där insulinfrisättningen från pankreas betaceller är nedsatt, vilket leder till insulinresistens. Det är en tyst och smygande sjukdom som främst upptäcks när patienter har utvecklat komplikationer. De vanligaste komplikationerna är ögon, njure, fot och hjärt- och kärlsjukdomar. Ärftlighet, hög ålder, fysisk inaktivitet och fetma är vanliga orsaker till diabetes typ 2, vilket gör att livsstilsförändringar exempelvis ökad fysisk aktivitet, viktminskning och sunda matvanor är betydelsefullt vid behandlingen av sjukdomen. Aktuellt examensarbete syftar till att beskriva vuxna patienters upplevelser av livsstilsförändringar vid diabetes typ 2. Det bygger på en litteraturstudie bestående av åtta kvalitativa artiklar. Resultatet består av följande huvudteman, en förändrad tillvaro, känna sig åsidosatt och känna sig hälsosam. Dessa huvudteman är uppbyggda av fem subteman så som ”kroppen spelar roll”, ”en inre kamp för livsstilsförändringar”, ”behov av information”, patientens möte med sjukvården”, ”bryta gamla vanor” och ”upplevelser av livsstilsförändringar”. Resultatet visar att drabbas av diabetes typ 2 innebär förändringar i patientens vardag, vilket ger känslan av en förändrad tillvaro. Det framkommer i resultatet att patienterna får ett otillfredsställande möte med hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal, vilket leder till att de känner sig åsidosatta. Därtill får patienterna en bristfällig information om diabetes typ 2, vilket innebär att de erhåller en ofullständig upplysning om livsstilsförändringar och komplikationer. Slutligen upplevde patienterna livsstilsförändringar som nödvändiga men svåra och energikrävande. Slutsatsen tydliggör patienternas behov av stöd, undervisning och vägledning, vilket är bra att sjuksköterskan blir medvetet om.

A study on the application of contemporary visual art into flagship stores of luxury fashion brands

Luxury fashion brands face a new challenge as to how to sustain brand growth while maintaining the exclusivity of brands due to the democratisation of the luxury phenomenon which is mainly driven by the emergence of ‘new luxury’ and changes of consumption style ‘trading up’. Luxury consumers are becoming disillusioned with the vulgarisation of luxury goods and prefer exclusive luxurious experiences. In order to keep pace with the changes in luxury consumer needs and promote an image with creative and luxurious connotations, luxury brands increasingly associate with contemporary visual art through diverse kinds of channels. Among the channels, great attention has been given to contemporary visual art exhibitions within a flagship store due to its benefits: geographical location, cutting investment cost and offering direct art experience to consumers. However, there is no theoretical research investigating the main points to be considered in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands. Moreover, there is a need for a systematic approach in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands as relying mainly on a designer’s intuition might pose a problem: delivering different messages from those intended. Through the research, four main propositions were identified which need to be considered when luxury fashion brands apply contemporary visual art exhibitions to their flagship stores: 1) brand communication with consumers, 2) the fit between brand identity and that of an artist, 3) consumers’ value/benefits in the way that enhance consumers’ aesthetic experience of art and 4) artists’ value/benefits. Models including a conceptual model and a design tool kit were developed and tested with experts in this field. The proposed models are decision supporting tools which provide a comprehensive overview regarding the main points to be considered as well as support finding a high fit artist to brand identity. They offer advantages as follows: 1) the conceptual framework improves understanding of the needs/values of the three main stake holders such as luxury fashion brands, consumers and artists for this practice and provides an insight into how to address them in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands 2) the tool kit assists in making a decision when selecting artists or artworks and offers benefits to all the stake holders: 1) luxury brand value by managing their touch points effectively that ultimately lead to enhancing brand communication, 2) consumer value by preventing confusion caused by disharmonious messages from all the touch points within flagship stores, and 3) artist value by finding a matched brand for synergy between brands and artists.

Aesthetic perception, nature and experience

This thesis is about the perceptual nature of aesthetic experience and the importance of nature as a paradigmatic object of aesthetic perception and aesthetic experience more broadly conceived. For this reason, it merits serious attention by philosophers working in aesthetics, as has been argued since Ronald Hepburn’s seminal essay “Contemporary Aesthetics and the Neglect of Natural Beauty”. If aesthetic experience is anything, it is at least perceptual. It is a mode of perceptual experience that is the result of having been attentive to and having discriminated between, the aesthetic and non-aesthetic, and invites room for reflection on, and connections to be made with, cognitive and emotive processes. Rooting the aesthetic in perception allows us to recognize and understand that it has an impact on our daily activities, rather than being restricted either to a particular kind of object, to the knowledge we might have about it, or to intense, rarefied aesthetic experience. If an object is to be an aesthetic object it need not be an artwork, indeed, one might even argue that nature is more interesting an aesthetic object from the perspective that it is indeterminate, not the result of human intentionality, and from an existential point of view, one that acknowledges our dependence on it. In the course of the argument, I thus resist the idea that the aesthetic experience of art is necessarily prior to the aesthetic experience of nature. The perceptual account put forward is based on a realist account of aesthetic properties that considers aesthetic properties to be perceptual properties and that considers aesthetic experience to be perceptually rich. I link it to the idea of ‘whole formalism’, a perceptual, aesthetic account that is nestled in the wider thought that aesthetic perception relates, although not causally, to other features of experience, such as emotion, and knowledge. Perceptual, aesthetic experience is thus not reduced to an austere account of aesthetic formalism. The thesis begins by analysing historical accounts of aesthetic perception, beginning with Plato, Aristotle and Aquinas. It builds on this analysis by reinterpreting crucial concepts to the discipline of aesthetics, such as disinterest and formalism that originated in the eighteenth century and are relevant to the idea of aesthetic perception. It then brings the idea of aesthetic perception up to date by addressing the current debate about cognitivism and non-cognitivism about aesthetic experience where nature is concerned. By tracing the idea of aesthetic perception historically, I will have also shown the role of nature as a paradigm of aesthetic experience through history and that nature is a repository for rich aesthetic experience and for rich experiential engagement with it.

När det är dags för ett barn att överflyttas från en barnintensivvårdsavdelning (BIVA) till en vanlig vårdavdelning lämnas en känd miljö med känd personal och noggrann monitorering för att påbörja en ny fas på ett okänt ställe. Denna nya fas kan för föräldrarna representera förbättring av barnets hälsa och ett steg närmare hem, men är också initialt en period av oro, stress och rädsla. Studiens syfte var att beskriva föräldrars upplevelser av överflyttning av sitt barn från BIVA till vårdavdelning. En kvalitativ metod användes med intervjuer som datainsamlingsmetod där fem föräldrar intervjuades. Kvalitativ innehållsanalys valdes som analysmetod. Resultatet visar att information om vårdavdelningen, möjligheter för smärtlindring till barnet och innehåll i det som överrapporteras var viktigast för att känna kontroll och trygghet. Det sågs stora skillnader mellan BIVA och avdelningen men överflyttningen upplevdes även som ett positivt steg för förbättring och hemgång. Föräldrarna hade överlag en positiv upplevelse av överflyttningen. Kontroll och trygghet är viktigt vårdtiden igenom och så också under överflyttningen. Den minskade vårdnivån innebar att föräldrar fick ta ett större egenansvar.

In this essay we will highlight the professional role and development of teachers and recreation centers during the 20th century. We will use the research of, among others, Finn Calander and Ann Pihlgren who have investigated and discussed the development of the recreation centers throughout the 20th century. The theoretical basis for the work is social constructivism and the socio-cultural perspective. By using this theories, we will attempt to explain how the recreation center and the recreations center teachers work has evolved and what has driven this development. Furthermore, we will discuss the impact that the teachers’ certification has on the school centers’ teachers and their work. The teachers’ certification has caused some confusion regarding the purpose of the recreation center teachers' mission, both in the universities where the new recreation center teachers’ are trained and among the recreation teachers. We will compare our reasoning to Lgr 11 to see what the governing documents provides in terms of guidelines and guidance for the recreation center teacher profession. The informants who have been interviewed in this work are four recreation center teacher with several years of experience in the profession. The schools where we conducted the interviews, were chosen on the basis of our prior internships there, and due to their geographical locations. The informants were interviewed about the schools they had previous experience of the profession and any disparity they experienced between their assigned work and the actual work, as well as, whether this had changed significantly during their time in the profession. The interviewed informants described that they are no longer comfortable in the professional role they serve at schools as they feel more like extra teachers, something which they have not at all received training for, rather than the recreation center teachers that they are.
