The Clash between La Via Vecchia e la Via Nuova in Franco Paci's Novels

Saccucci, Sandra 08 1900 (has links)
<p> I have • • • • his anxious desire to know everything, to think, to write everything, his anxious desire to be heard.¹ </p> <p>The most significant influx of Italian immigrants to Canada began at the end of the last century, and their number increased substantially just after the Second World War. Those immigrants were preoccupied with survival and had neither the time nor the education to document their immigrant experience. By the 1970's however, some of their children had a university education. This generation had the opportunity to cultivate their minds and the inclination to understand their parents' pasts. They have become the spokespersons of a generation of silent labourers. While many of them are now pursuing professional careers, they still remember that their fathers blasted rocks, worked in mines, hauled ties and did construction, while their mothers worked in factories. The sounds of this labour reverberate in their literature.</p> <p> Franco Paci took his place in this group of writers when he produced his novels, The Italians, the first full length book on Italian immigrant themes, Black Madonna and The Father. The author's main theme is the clash between la via vecchia (the old way) and la via nuova (the new way}.He sets up a series of tensions, including the ambivalence of the Italian-Canadian duality, the home as protection and prison, the generation schism and the language barrier as a means of illustrating his theme. He recalls the immigrant struggle and questions its price with compassion and iron-fair judgement. Using characters from the Italian immigrant milieu, he gives sound and structure to the mixed emotions and psychological dualities of the ethnic and the exiled. An Italian immigrant himself, Franco Paci draws from two cultures and examines the immigrant past in the context of the present. Novelist Robert Kraetsch explains the importance of writing about one's background: "In a sense, we haven't got an identity until somebody tells our story. The fiction makes us real."² Paci's works speak to the conflicts and resolutions repeated in countless Italian families across Canada.</p> / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Music and Depth in Landscape Experience

Mauzy, John W. 23 June 2006 (has links)
The estranged relationship with landscape exhibited by contemporary cultures has been well documented by prominent theorists. Design professionals can begin to reconcile culture and landscape by proposing interventions in everyday landscapes which embrace uncertainty, acknowledge the temporal nature of phenomena, and introduce elements of ambiguity while simultaneously creating pleasing, functional environments. Such interventions encourage meaningful, imaginative experience, encourage multiple readings, and suggest renewed ways of dwelling in landscape. The methodology for this thesis is a two part examination of contemporary approaches to the production of space in significant cultural landscapes. Part one, a position paper, reviews relevant literature and outlines a position to guide design proposals. Part two tests the principals and theories developed in the position paper through proposals for interventions at two sites. The context for the design component is the Crooked Road Musical Heritage Trail. The Crooked Road is an ideal setting in which to explore the potential of interventions that seek to reconcile culture and landscape. It offers participants a framework for the experience of both regional landscape and culture in the form of traditional music rich in landscape themes. Proposals are developed for an abandoned homestead on Shooting Creek and the Floyd Country Store, both in Floyd County, Virginia, along the Crooked Road. The approach to intervention developed in these proposals is intended to guide the development of additional sites along the Crooked Road with the goals of enriching the landscape experience of participants, strengthening regional sense of place, and reconciling estranged relationships with landscape. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Taking the First Step: The Labyrinth and the World of Landscape Architecture

Vellenga, Amber Hollis 31 May 2001 (has links)
Having historical, cultural, and religious roots, humans have been walking the path of the labyrinth for centuries. From seashores to cathedral floors, the labyrinth is seen as a symbolic search for one's center. The labyrinth has experienced a revival in modern life, showing up everywhere from rehabilitation centers and hospitals, to prisons and backyard landscapes across this country. The labyrinth has emerged as a form that can help humans find their internal center and place of emotional stability. Having walked the labyrinth and believing in its healing properties, I became interested in the symbol itself. I was intrigued by the way the symbol was actually an architectural element that told the narrative of the culture that built it. While the labyrinth was on church floors in medieval times, its revival in modern times seems to be located in the outdoor environment. Since Landscape Architecture is a field based on the creation of safe and pleasing outdoor environments for humans, I chose the labyrinth as a way of looking at "experience" and "contemplation" in the landscape, and how the design(the creation of form) of this object contributes to the analysis. Wanting to complete this analysis by actually building a labyrinth, I was approached by the Sanctuaries Unique Garden Center in Richmond, Virginia, and asked to design and build a labyrinth. Providing Sanctuaries with conceptual designs of one way paths, a final design was settled on and the project was built. The thesis will highlight the theory, design, and construction surrounding the object called a "labyrinth." c44fb6c5-1ea6-4f7d-89f1-2e62511b85f8,"Health outcomes following a traumatic event are an important aspect of recovery from any type of trauma. Further, distress and psychopathology, specifically Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), have been shown to have a significant impact on physical health recovery post-trauma. The current study utilized a sample of 56 (48 women, 8 men) residential fire survivors to examine the potential mediating effect of PTSD and PTSD symptom subclusters. Participants were interviewed four months after a residential fire and were assessed on levels of exposure to the fire (Fire Questionnaire & Resource Loss Scale), PTSD symptomology (Anxiety Disorder Interview Schedule), and somatic health complaints (Brief Symptom Inventory). Consistent with previous findings, PTSD was found to mediate the relationship between exposure to a traumatic event and reporting of health symptoms. Further, the increased arousal subcluster was found to mediate the aforementioned relationship; the avoidance symptom subcluster was found to partially mediate the same relationship. Implications of results of the current project are discussed with regard to the impact of trauma on survivors' health, along with recommendations for further research. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Value enhancing learning in diversification experience

Nguyen III, T.T., Cai, Charlie X. January 2013 (has links)
No / This paper analyses whether and how organizational learning from diversification experience affects diversification value. Three main findings are reported. First, we find a U-shaped relationship between diversification value and diversification experience. Second, higher similarity in industries of diversifications results in higher diversification value. Finally, value of diversification and temporal interval between diversifications is related an inverted U-shaped curve. In the extension analysis, the paper demonstrates that external learning from others’ experience also affects value of diversification in a cubic pattern. Taken together, the study illustrates the effects learning from both own and population experience on the cross-sectional variance of diversification value.

Hilme Klint, Elin, Ohlsson, Frida January 2016 (has links)
Hostmanship - the art of making people feel welcome. Hostmanship is becoming a very important tool for organisations around the world and can be vital for a company’s survival. During our Bachelor of Arts-degree in becoming professional Experience producers we realized that hostmanship is as important on a professional level as in every-day life which is why we took an interest in integrating experience production with hostmanship in our daily school environment. The purpose of this essay is to create a hostmanship model for Campus Piteå based on the experience production model TEM-Total Experience Management. The study is based on a semi-qualitative semi-structured interview with a key figure at Luleå University of Technology who is in charge of the hostmanship at the university’s different campuses. Two focus groups with students from different courses at Campus Piteå has also been completed. It was revealed during the interview and the focus groups that the hostmanship the university wanted to convey was not experienced in the same way by the students at Campus Piteå. We have therefore, in sub study three, used Gap-analysis as a tool to create a hostmanship modified version of TEM, based on the results of the interview and the focus groups.

Experience feedback within contracting companies. : The creation of a model to streamline the experience feedback between construction projects.

Petersén, Felix, Björk, Oscar January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: The construction sector has for many years been criticized for being ineffective, non-competitive and being expensive. Swedish construction firms needs to work with their experience feedback systems. But unfortunately it lacks tradition and experiences with this kind of work with experience feedback. Work in the construction sector usually is defined as craftmanship. Which means that errors are corrected as quickly as possible without understanding and analyzing the underlying causes of the errors and thus be able to control their production processes. The purpose of this study is to bring foward a theoretical model over information flows that could increase the efficiency of the experience feedback between construction projects. Method: The study’s approach was through a qualitative case study. Qualitative case study was chosen due to the need of a thorough analysis of the problem. The report’s theoretical framework is produced from a literature study which focused on experience feedback, knowledge management, incentives and motivation. The empirical accumulation consisted of six interviews conducted by the type of semi-structured and a document analysis. Findings: In the current situation oral feedback is the most common experience feedback from the construction site. Systems regarding experience feedback is not used due to lack of knowledge of the systems and information about how the work with experience feedback should be done is non-existent. Work with experience feedback does not take place continuously during the project and does not have any shall batch. There is no structure, responsibilities and guidelines regarding how the work with experience feedback should be done. This leads to uncertainty among service men concerning the definition of experience feedback. Due to that no information has been released to service men about how the systems works or what’s in the systems motivation to work with the experience feedback systems are failing. Implications: The conclusions of this report is that a knowledge bank should be made available to all service men within the company, from the knowledge bank experiences are reported in and out. During the project continuosly work should be done regarding experience feedback through meetings and at each construction site a responsible person should handle the reporting of experiences. There should be clear structures and guidelines of what the work with experience feedback includes. A responsible person should be handling the knowledge bank and ensure that only relevant information stores in the knowledge bank. Limitations: The report concerns incentive and motivation which is applicable in any organization, this promotes a generally valid result for the case study. The report delimitates from all database structures which are considered as positive due to the time it takes to analyze and make these structures. This would have indirectly been taking time from the analysis of the experience feedback systems and would make the study’s result less credible.
