Experiments in connection with the structure of emetineNorcross, Geoffrey January 1949 (has links)
Emetine is the principal alkaloid of ipecacuanha root which is obtained from the plant known botanically as Psychotria Ipecacuanha, also called Cephaelis Ipecacuanha, indigenous to Brazil, and from Psychotria Acuminata found in Colombia, both members of the Rubiaceous Order. In this root emetine is accompanied by cephaeline and, in much smaller amount, by psychotrine, 0=methylpsychotrine and emetamine, the five alkaloids being closely related to each other chemically. The two chief medicinal properties of ipecacuanha root, namely its emetic effect and its ability to alleviate dysentery, have long been known, the name “ipecacuanha” itself being derived through Portugese from a native word meaning “road-side sick-making plant”. It is with the investigations into the constitution of the ipecacuanha alkaloids, and particularly with the modern work in this field, that we are concerned in the present dissertation. From considerations of space, in the historical survey much must necessarily be disregarded which to the present author seems irrelevant to the main issue, and in particular on account of the work of many early investigators will be omitted because in no way do their results appear to have disclosed anything of fundamental importance. A chapter is to be included recording the development, scope and modern position of the technique of dehydrogenation, a technique which forms the basis of a large section of the present investigation of which this thesis is a record.

Frenesi em suspensão : em direção a um modelo crítico a partir da teoria da aceleração social de Hartmut Rosa /Tziminadis, João Lucas Faco. January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: This work aims at exploring the theoretical potentials of the concept of social acceleration developed by Hartmut Rosa, towards the current time experience diagnosis he has elaborated, deriving from this a particular critical model. Departing from this diagnosis a new subjectivity formation is attempted to be highlighted, whose inner trends points to the spreading diffusion of psychopathologies which, by its turn, reset the culture discontent. The way between the theory of social acceleration and the drawing of these new tendencies is made by three chapters. In the first one, the concept of dynamic stabilisation is taken as an exposition organizer of the analytical categories used by Rosa in order to build its base theory and, with it, to ground a new reading of the modernity concept. In the second, there are exposed the phenomena that indicates, in Rosa's view, the turning point between modernity and late-modernity, and from them the phenomenological base of new social integration modalities and its following subjective strategies is elaborated. Finally, at the third chapter, a sociological-philosophical reflection on the concept of alienation derived from the social acceleration theory, which denotes a pathological structure of the contemporary subjectivity, is operated. From this concept exposition, detailed in three dimensions, the traces of a critical model, grounded on the suffering caused by the prediction of the actions by the social acceleration law, is constituted. / Mestre

Some applications of RF-gradients and excitation sculpting in NMR spectroscopyHeikkinen, S. (Sami) 11 May 1999 (has links)
Abstract
RF-gradients produced utilizing RF-field inhomogenity of conventional receiver/transmitter coil of NMR-probe can be used to mimic the effects of B0-gradients. This is done by placing long inhomogenous pulse in between two 90° pulses of appropriate phases (z-rotation cluster). B0-gradient based excitation sculpting can be converted into RF-gradient version. Selective one-dimensional TOCSY and NOESY using RF-gradient based excitation sculpting are described. In addition, non-selective two-dimensional experiments, TOCSY and NOESY, with RF-gradient based coherence selection are presented. Excitation sculpting using BIRD or BIRDR as inversion element results in isotope filter. Pre-suppression of non-13C-bound protons using RF-gradient BIRD prior to HSQC enables recording of spectrum of comparable quality to B0-gradient selected HSQC. This is beneficial for spectrometers lacking B0-gradient capabilities. Excitation sculpting using BIRDR can be used efficiently as low-pass filter in HMBC experiment. Furthermore, simultaneous elimination of protons bound to 15N and 13C can be accomplished with BIRDR based method.

Orgaanspesifieke proteienkinase-aktiwiteite in Triticum aestivum L. kultivar Zaragoza, met spesiale verwysing na die helmknopkultuurtegniekBothma, Christiaan 12 March 2014 (has links)
M.Sc. (Biochemistry) / The culture of plant anther tissue in vitro, is an important tool which could be used, when perfectedr in the conventional breeding of crop plants. Using this technique it may be possible to generate bomozygotIc lines in one or two generations in contrast to the seven or eight generations required by conventional breeding programs. Physiological data on the behavior of cultured anther tissue suggests that the genotype is the most Important factor Influencing this factor with respect to wheat barley and most other crop plants. Optimal culture conditions with respect to culture medium and environmental factors have already been established. It would appear that a critical factor, present in the pollen cells of anther tissue, governs the variation and differentiation of the embrionic pollen in the formation of haploid plants. Many important systems of cellular signalling and therefore cellular regulation are mediated by protein kinases and phosphatases. An examination of protein kinase activity in normal and anther tissue may yield information about the process of differentiation. Identification of key kinase activities may provide plant breeders with a means of selecting more responsive genotypes for the use In the anther culture technique In VItro. In this manuscript a caparison is made between protein kinase activities in crude extracts of meristematic...

Ultrafast relaxation of hot phonons in graphene-hBN heterostructuresGolla, Dheeraj, Brasington, Alexandra, LeRoy, Brian J., Sandhu, Arvinder 01 May 2017 (has links)
Fast carrier cooling is important for high power graphene based devices. Strongly coupled optical phonons play a major role in the relaxation of photo-excited carriers in graphene. Heterostructures of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have shown exceptional mobility and high saturation current, which makes them ideal for applications, but the effect of the hBN substrate on carrier cooling mechanisms is not understood. We track the cooling of hot photo-excited carriers in graphene-hBN heterostructures using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. We find that the carriers cool down four times faster in the case of graphene on hBN than on a silicon oxide substrate thus overcoming the hot phonon bottleneck that plagues cooling in graphene devices.
