Effect of season of harvest and site quality on hardwood regeneration on the Virginia PiedmontKays, Jonathan 12 March 2013 (has links)
Many existing Piedmont hardwood stands are composed of trees that are largely under 45 cm in diameter and contain a desirable oak component, as well as large amounts of undesirable red maple and sourwood. In stands under even-aged silviculture, season of harvest can be used as an effective management tool to favor different species compositions. If oak or other hardwood production is the management objective a dormant season harvest will result in increased sprout vigor of all oak as well as non-oak species. If pine conversion is the objective then a growing season harvest will reduce the vigor of all hardwood species and allow for easier competition control. The higher densities of all classes of regenerants on better sites indicates control will be more difficult. / Master of Science

Sorption of selected inorganic materials on raw and retorted oil shalesCowher, Donna M. January 1984 (has links)
Shale oil is an attractive, alternative fuel source for a world in which there is an increasing demand for energy. However, it is necessary to assess the environmental impacts of the shale oil industry before widescale production is begun. Diversity of retorting processes, the subsequent variability in waste products and the possible waste management schemes makes assessment of these impacts complicated. Waste treatment and disposal are areas which must be researched thoroughly. To properly evaluate the environmental risks associated with the disposal of processed shales and process wastewaters, an appreciation for the sorption/desorption (S/D) characteristics of oil shales is required.
The overall objective of this research was to evaluate the S/D capacity of four types of shale: Antrim (spent, eastern shale), Anvil (raw, western shale), Oxy 6 and Run 16 (spent, western shales). Batch and continuous-flow, column experiments were performed in which the S/D behavior of five cations (As, Ca, Cd, Fe, and K) and three anions (F, SO₄, and HCO₃/CO₃) was monitored. The conductivity, redox potential, and pH of the eluent fluids were also determined.
This study showed that retort temperature and porosity of the various shales had a significant effect an their S/D characteristics. Batch elution trials with spent shales produced eluents having a characteristic pH in the range 8.5 to 11.5. In these experiments, the shales retorted at lower temperatures (660°C and 793°C) released higher levels of Ca, K, and SO₄ than did a higher temperature, retorted shale (800 to 1000°C) and raw shale. The shales retorted at lower temperatures also had the highest porosities of the four shales and exhibited a greater capacity for sorption of As and F than did the other shales. Continuous-flow, elution trials showed that most inorganics monitored were flushed from the columns of shale in the first 5 to 8 pore volumes of effluent. / Master of Science

A diallel study of flowering and of ear components of yield in Corn Belt maize and their interactions with population densityMcClane, John Michael January 1985 (has links)
A diallel study of American Corn Belt maize (Zea mays L.) was conducted at Holland, Virginia in 1981 and 1982. All possible crosses of twelve inbred parents (A619, A632, B73, H60, H93, H96, Mo17, Oh7B, Pa91, Val7, Va.79:419, Va85) were planted in three replications with population density treatments of 39,536, 49,420, 59,304, and 69,188 pl/ha in strips across hybrid treatments. Analyses of variance and combining ability analyses were performed on traits measuring the timing of anthesis (pollen shed) and silk emergence, on ear components of yield, and on components of kernel size. Density effects were highly significant for all traits, except for that of pollen shed duration, in the analyses combined over years. Hybrid-by-year interactions were highly significant for all traits. Correlations between GCA effects of grain yield and GCA effects of silking delay (anthesis-to-silking interval), kernels per row on the ear, ear kernel number, and kernel depth[(ear diameter - cob diameter)/2] were -0.79, 0.64, 0.66, and 0.80 in 1981, and 0.24, 0.81, 0.71, and 0.26 in 1982, respectively. Moisture stress sufficient to cause wilting occurred before and during silking in 1981. Apparently, short silking delay was associated with high moisture stress tolerance for grain yield in 1981 and was associated with long ear shoot length in 1982. Deep kernel depth apparently was associated with drought stress tolerance for yield as well. The heritabilities of ear traits were higher the earlier they became established in the sequence of development. Heritabilities of silking delay and most ear components of yield were increased by increasing planting density. However, the correlations among flowering and ear traits largely were unaffected by density, perhaps because densities were not high enough to make barrenness a substantial factor in grain yield. The most important traits related to yield were silking delay, kernels per row, kernel depth, and kernel row number. GCA to SCA variance component ratios were increased by combining data over years and by the more optimum season for yield. / Ph. D.

Fault diagnosis of lithium ion battery using multiple model adaptive estimationSidhu, Amardeep Singh 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries have become integral parts of our lives; they are widely used in applications like handheld consumer products, automotive systems, and power tools among others. To extract maximum output from a Li-ion battery under optimal conditions it is imperative to have access to the state of the battery under every operating condition. Faults occurring in the battery when left unchecked can lead to irreversible, and under extreme conditions, catastrophic damage.
In this thesis, an adaptive fault diagnosis technique is developed for Li-ion batteries. For the purpose of fault diagnosis the battery is modeled by using lumped electrical elements under the equivalent circuit paradigm. The model takes into account much of the electro-chemical phenomenon while keeping the computational effort at the minimum. The diagnosis process consists of multiple models representing the various conditions of the battery. A bank of observers is used to estimate the output of each model; the estimated output is compared with the measurement for generating residual signals. These residuals are then used in the multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) technique for generating probabilities and for detecting the signature faults.
The effectiveness of the fault detection and identification process is also dependent on the model uncertainties caused by the battery modeling process. The diagnosis performance is compared for both the linear and nonlinear battery models. The non-linear
battery model better captures the actual system dynamics and results in considerable improvement and hence robust battery fault diagnosis in real time. Furthermore, it is shown that the non-linear battery model enables precise battery condition monitoring in different degrees of over-discharge.

Tributirina apresenta atividade quimiopreventiva quando administrada isoladamente, mas não em associação com a vitamina A, em ratos submetidos a modelo de carcinogênese de cólon / Tributyrin exhibits chemopreventive activity when administrated alone, but not in combination with vitamin A, in colon carcinogenesis model in ratsHeidor, Renato 30 November 2007 (has links)
Assim, TB consiste em agente quimiopreventivo promissor da carcinogênese de cólon quando administrada isoladamente, mas não em associação com a VA. 15 / Chemopreventive activities of tributyrin (TB) and vitamin A (VA) were administered in combination or not, before, during and after the initiation in rats subjected to carcinogenesis model of colon. Wistar rats received VA [1 mg/100 g of b.w (group VA)], tributyrin [200 mg/100 g of b.w (TB group)] or association of VA with BD (group VA + TB). Rats treated with corn oil and maltodextrin were used as control (GC). The presence of aberrant foci crypts (ACF) was evaluated and their location in colon tissue was determined. In addition, DNA damages and the global pattern of DNA methylation in colonic cells was measured. In total colon as in distal and proximal portions, the TB group presented lower (p <0.05) number of ACF with 4 or more crypts/cm2 in comparison to the GC group. The number of ACF with 4 or more crypts /cm2 was used as criteria of aggressiveness. In relation to the damage of DNA, the VA, VA + TB and TB groups exhibits smaller nucleoids lengths (p <0.05) compared to the GC group. There were no statistically significant differences on the global pattern of DNA methylation. So TB is promising chemopreventive agent in carcinogenesis of the colon when administered alone, but not in combination with the VA.

We have studied the practice of business experiments inside organizations. Digital transformation makes business experiments practices much easier than they used to be. We have chosen adaptive marketing capabilities (Day, 2011) as our reference frame. Our goal is to describe what enables business experiments and to show the consequences of business experiments practices inside organizations. We have focused especially on cultural change and capabilities improvement. Therefore, we have worked on learning processes occuring during business experiments at a team level and also at an organizational level.Based on exploratory interviews and two business cases, we have brought into relief the building process of an adaptive marketing capability. Our contribution consists of the description of the building of an adaptive marketing capability, through test culture, entrepreneurial culture and the management of the whole learning levels.
