Measuring the vertical muon intensity with the ALTO prototype at Linnaeus University / Mätning av den vertikala muon-intensiteten med ALTO-prototypen på Linnéuniversitetet

Norén, Magnus January 2021 (has links)
ALTO is a project, currently in the research and development phase, with the goal of constructing a Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory in the southern hemisphere. It will detect the particle content reaching the ground from the interactions of either VHE gamma rays or cosmic rays in the atmosphere known as extensive air showers. In this thesis, we use an ALTO prototype built at Linneaus University to estimate the vertical muon intensity in Växjö. The atmospheric muons we detect at ground level come from hadronic showers caused by a cosmic ray entering the atmosphere. Such showers are considered background noise in the context of VHE gamma-ray astronomy, and the presence of muons is an important indicator of the nature of the shower, and thus of the primary particle. The measurement is done by isolating events that produce signals in two small scintillation detectors that are part of the ALTO prototype, and are placed almost directly above each other. This gives us a data set that we assume represents muons travelling along a narrow set of trajectories, and by measuring the rate of such events, we estimate the muon intensity. We estimate the corresponding momentum threshold using two different methods; Monte Carlo simulation and calculation of the mean energy loss. The vertical muon intensity found through this method is about 21% higher than commonly accepted values. We discuss some possible explanations for this discrepancy, and conclude that the most likely explanation is that the isolated data set contains a significant number of “false positives”, i.e., events that do not represent a single muon following the desired trajectory.

Étude clinique et psychopathologique de la dyspraxie développementale chez l'enfant / Clinical and psychopathological study of developmental dyspraxia in children

Commune, Antonin 15 May 2017 (has links)
This research is about the comprehension of the psychological functioning (emotional and cognitive) of the children who are carriers of a dyspraxia. The 1st part consists in defining the dyspraxia in the classifications and History. Then 15 children (1 girl and 14 boys) aged from 5 years 8 months to 10 years 11 months have been seen for an extensive psychological exam (Rorschach, TAT, UDN II, Family Drawing, Rey-Osterrieth complex figure, R-CMAS, MDI-C interpreted in a psychoanalytical dimension. Two hypothesis have been put to the test : the dyspraxia is incorporated within a “Limit Pathology of the Child” as defined by the CFTMEA and the dyspraxia leads to a disorder of the thought container linked to a disorder of the plain body feeling. The results allow to discriminate 3 groups of children thus objectifying the dyspraxia figures. Group 1, composed of 4 children, presents a pre-psychosis and a retardness in the cognition organization. Group 2, composed of 7 children, is typical of the dyspraxia ; The children present a “Limit pathology of the child” with an evolution disharmony and a cognitive disharmony. Finally, group 3 is composed of 4 children. They present a functioning close to group 2 but their psychological economy tends to neurosis. They present a cognition investment. The research ends with case studies.

Blažek, Jiří January 2014 (has links)
Title: Cosmic Ray Showers with Anomalous Longitudinal Profile Author: Jiří Blažek Department: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University Supervisor: RNDr. Petr Trávníček, Ph.D., Institute of Physics ASCR Abstract: The aim of this work was to study high-energy cosmic ray showers with anomalous longitudinal profiles generated by Monte-Carlo simulation and subse- quently use the acquired analysis techniques on results from the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) in Argentina. Firstly, a short introduction of various de- scriptions of the extensive air showers was given. Then a systematic analysis was performed on approx. 7 × 105 simulated showers with three different tech- niques. A brief explanation of the functionality of the PAO was given, then the importance of monitoring the immediate state of the atmosphere using the Shoot- the-Shower program was elucidated and the FRAM telescope was described in detail. FRAM enabled an identification of showers with a clear atmospheric back- ground, this sample of showers was then analyzed and several interesting events warranting a further study were chosen. Keywords: Pierre Auger Observatory, Extensive Air Showers, Chemical Compo- sition, Anomalous Longitudinal Profile, Gaisser-Hillas Function

Renewable Energy Market for Rural Electrification in Developing Countries: Country Case Nepal

Mainali, Brijesh January 2011 (has links)
The availability of abundant renewable resources, lack of fossil fuels and difficult geographical terrain for grid line extensions contribute to the advantages of renewable based decentralized rural electrification in Ne-pal. Solar home system (SHS) and micro-hydro are the most commonly adopted off-grid renewable energy technologies in the country. This dis-sertation examines the market of renewable energy based rural electrifi-cation within prevailing policy and programmes framework. The study verifies whether the market has been able to serve the poor in Nepal. It also captures the perception of various stakeholders (e.g. private sup-ply/installation companies, NGOs, financial institutions and the donor‘s programme) regarding the business, financing issues and the role of gov-ernment policy on the market development. In addition, the study dis-cusses and analyses renewable based rural electrification supply models, the economics behind rural electrification, market drivers and market distribution in the rural areas of Nepal. The financial mix in the off-grid rural electrification is generally charac-terized by subsidy, equity and credit. The study shows that awareness about renewable energy technologies and willingness to pay for electricity access has increased considerably. However, there is a huge financial gap between the cost of electrification and affordability among the poor. The distribution analysis shows there is significant increment in the extensive growth but decrease in the intensive growth rate of rural electrification thus indicating market expansion with uneven penetration among the ru-ral people. Solar PV technology is still not in the reach of the economic poor. Access to credit and cumbersome subsidy delivery mechanisms have been perceived as the major factors affecting the expansion of rural electrification by the stakeholders, requiring innovation in the credit and subsidy delivery system so that a larger rural population can be given ac-cess to electrification. / QC 20110502
