General Managerial Skills and External Communication

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This paper examines whether CEOs with general managerial skills are better at achieving the goals of external communication. Using the General Ability Index developed by Custodio, Ferreira, and Matos (2013) to measure CEOs' general managerial skills, I find that firms with generalist CEOs are more likely to obtain the desired outcomes of communication, including the smaller difference between analyst forecasts and management guidance, less dispersion in analyst forecasts, higher analyst following, and higher institutional ownership, after controlling for CEO talent and the impact of Regulation FD. Moreover, I provide direct evidence that general managerial skills are more important to external communication under poor information environments. I also investigate the characteristics of analysts who follow firms with generalists, and my findings suggest the private interaction with analysts is an important communication channel for generalists. Finally, I find that generalists are able to attract dedicated investors and gain long-term capital for their firms. Overall, I provide evidence on the growing importance of general managerial skills in external communication. This paper offers new insights into why CEOs with general skills are paid at a premium over those with specific skills, as documented in previous studies. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Accountancy 2015

In the metalworking industry, one of the most important generators of wealth today, the use of cutting fluid, for example, essential in machining operations and a potential pollutant, has been constantly studied to be replaced, used in minimum amount possible or even abolushied from the process, aiming to reduce the environmental impact or zero it, without affecting the quality and production volume of such transactions. Among the alternatives, we highlight the use of dry machining and minimum quantly of lubricant (MQL). The latter, which is the spraying of a minimum amount (10 to 100 ml/h) full of oil in stream of compressed air, can also be used in some cases, the lubricant mixed with water (MQL/Water) and sprayed in the same amount (10 to 100 ml/h) in the flow of compressed air, further reducing the volume of oil applied. This study aims to analyze the behavior of the technique of minimal amount of lubrificant (MQL) with three ratios of oil/water (1:1, 1:3 and 1:5) in the process of cylindrical grinding diving in ceramics, with diamond wheel and compare it to be behavior of the techniques of traditional and MQL conventional lubridification and cooling. The study was done by examining and evaluating the output variables of the grinding process outside of diving: roughness, roundness deviation, diametral wear of the grinding wheel and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Before the analysis of results, can be stated that, in general, for values of output variables, in the mentioned conditions, the MQL/Water are safisfactory in relation to the other conditions tested. The average roughness values of the MQL/water (1:1) was about 35% higher than the conventional and 20% less than the Traditional MQL.

Ferreira, Tuany Ciocci January 2015 (has links)
The integration of peripheral countries in financial globalization was accompanied by several crises since the early 1990. These crises contributed to the development of a branchof the international economy literature devoted to the study of external vulnerability indicators which seeks to find of weaknesses in the external structure of emerging economies so that the policy makers can take measures to circumvent or mitigate a crisis. The search for signs of vulnerability becomes significant in light of the current scenario, in which grows the possibility of a reversal in international liquidity, due to thechange of monetary policy in central countries. The objective of this research is to compare, through various external vulnerability indicators found along the literature, the external position of vulnerability of Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Turkey, because these are the emerging countries for which the market has the worst expectations of resilience against external shock and, therefore, were called the Fragile Five.
