Perceptions of hope and expectancy in parents and guardians beginning family therapy with their child

The Common Factors Model was introduced in 1992 by Michael Lambert suggesting that four factors that exist in all forms of psychotherapy are what account for positive therapeutic outcomes. The four common factors posited by Lambert include: Extratherapeutic Factors, The Therapeutic Relationship, Hope and Expectancy and Specific Factors. Marriage and family therapy is one form of psychotherapy that has taken an interest in The Common Factors Model and dedicated various amounts of research to understand connections between the two philosophies. Despite the efforts to understand common factors that exist in marriage and family therapy, very little research has been done studying the relationship between the common factor Hope and Expectancy, and marriage and family therapy. The current study aimed to fill that gap, by exploring the relationship between marriage and family therapy, and the common factor hope and expectancy through the lens of Snyder’s Hope Theory. In this study, a mixed methods sequential embedded designed was implemented to examine the relationship that exists between marriage and family therapy and the common factor Hope and Expectancy. The results indicated that levels of hope and expectancy were high in parents/guardians who were going to start participating family therapy with their child. The high levels of hope and expectancy were likely due to the activation of an interaction between extratherapeutic factors and hope and expectancy. Some of the extratherapeutic factors involved in the interaction were specific to marriage and family therapy, while others can be found in all forms of psychotherapy.

Some Factors Involved in the Manufacture of Brick Cheese

The flavor, quality and composition of market brick cheese varies greatly. Its moisture content often ranges from 37 to 43 per cent. The flavor may be similar to Limburger or it may even resemble that of Cheddar. Such a great variation in a specific food product tends toward disappointment for the consumer. It is believed that a more uniform standard of quality for this product is needed to materially increase its consumption. Therefore, a detailed study of some of the factors involved in the manufacture of brick cheese may help to improve the quality and aid in determining a satisfactory standard.

Interplay of Transcription Factor E and Spt4/5 During Transcription Initiation in <i>Pyrococcus furiosus</i>

Transcription, the first step in gene expression, is a highly regulated process which relies on a multi-protein complex to occur. Among these proteins are transcription factors, including initiation and elongation factors, which play differing roles in early and late stages of transcription. The mechanisms of transition from transcription initiation to elongation are not well understood in archaea, nor are the structures of the transcription factors involved. For transcription to occur in vitro, transcription factors TATA binding protein (TBP) and Transcription Factor B (TFB) are sufficient to allow RNA polymerase (RNAP) to synthesize RNA from template DNA. Another factor, Transcription Factor E (TFE), can also join the initiation complex and is likely to be essential in vivo. TFE is known to contribute to initiation by enhancing promoter opening, and while it has been shown to persist in elongation complexes, its role after initiation is unknown. Spt4/5, the archaeal homolog of the only universally conserved RNAP-associated factor, is known to join complexes in elongation steps and enhance processivity of the polymerase. However, if Spt4/5 joins pre-initiated complexes, it has been shown to inhibit transcription activity. The experiments in this thesis show that TFE and Spt4/5 participate in a crucial interchange at the upstream fork of the transcription bubble that helps define the timing of Spt4/5 binding. Using unnatural amino acid crosslinking techniques, the points of proximity between specific regions of these two factors and the template DNA have been mapped to identify possible sites of interaction. Competitive crosslinking assays indicate the exact timing of the shift in affinity between TFE and Spt4/5 for their shared binding site on RNAP. These data, combined with transcription assays, suggest a new role for TFE in preventing premature Spt4/5 binding, corresponding with a unique localized mobility within the winged helix of TFE.

Relationship Between First-Year Student Retention, Noncognitive Risk Factors, and Student Advising

It is well established that such student precollege cognitive measures as high school GPA and test scores (ACT, SAT) have a certain predictive value in student retention. While research is replete with evidence of the value of student advising in a college’s retention strategy, there is a gap in the literature on the impact of using noncognitive survey information by advisors to better target student deficiencies. The primary goal of this study was to explore the relationship between retention and exposure to noncognitive risk factor information for students and advisors. One thousand fifty-four freshmen students enrolled in a first-year experience (FYE) course at Dixie State College were given the Student Strengths Inventory (SSI) survey that measures six different noncognitive risk factor variables. By using a regression discontinuity design, students were initially divided into two sample groups using an index score generated by combining the high school GPA and ACT (or equivalent) test score. Students who fell below the cutoff point were further subdivided by random sampling into three groups: (a) students who received their survey results with no further action, (b) students selected for general advisement, and (c) students selected for targeted advisement using the survey results. When comparing the retention rates from fall semester 2009 to fall semester 2010, the retention rates varied as predicted by the researcher; however, these differences in retention could not be attributed to the usage of the survey with one exception: when the treatment group was filtered only to include first-generation students, usage of the survey results was statistically significant in contributing to a 62% retention rate, the highest of any of the sample groups studied.

Personality Factors Associated with Negative Affect: Application of the "Big Five" Taxonomy to Depression and Anxiety

The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns and discriminant utility of the five-factor model of personality ( "Big Five," consisting of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness factors) with depressed and anxious outpatients. One hundred two outpatients seeking services at a community mental health center in a small western community participated in the study. Subjects were 41 clients with a depressive disorder, 31 with an anxiety disorder, and 30 in a mixed clinical control group. Subjects completed the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness to Experience Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Results indicate that both depressed and anxious clients score in the "very high" range on neuroticism and "low" on extraversion. However , neither of these two factors is useful in discriminating between depression and anxiety since their mean scores are essentially equivalent . Conscientiousness is the crucial variable that discriminates between depressed and anxious clients. The mean score for the anxiety group is in the "very low" range, significantly lower than the depressed group whose mean is in the "low-average" range. Openness to experience contributes mildly to discriminant utility, with the mean score of the depressed group in the "high-average" range and the mean score of the anxiety group in the "average" range. The agreeableness variable contributes minimally to the discriminant function.

Some Factors which May Influence Survival of Game Farm-Reared Pheasants after Release into the Wild

This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine some of the factors which may influence the survival of Utah game farm-reared pheasants following their release into the wild. The survival of these birds is below the desired level after they are released, as is indicated by the low percentage taken by the sportsmen during the hunting season. In recent years the return from released game farm-reared pheasants is about 7 to 8 percent. Consequently, if survival rate of these birds could be increased, more birds would be available to supplement the wild stock. Also, an increase in the pheasant population throughout the state would make more birds available to sportsmen during the hunting season.

The Secreted End of a Transcription Factor Promotes Sensory Axon Growth

During neural development, axons rely on extracellular cues to reach their target regions. Although extracellular signaling is one of the principal determinants for the growth of developing axons, only a small handful of known signaling cues has been identified. The existence of some 86 billion neurons of different subtypes, which ultimately form numerous functional circuits in the human nervous system, means an enormous number of extracellular cues would be required during development. Current views hold that even if more extracellular cues were to be discovered, they would never number large enough to account for the complexity of the human nervous system. Rather, intracellular signaling pathways and other cell-intrinsic mechanisms expand the ways in which a neuron can respond to extracellular cues by tuning the degree of responsiveness to them. Cell-intrinsic signaling pathways also give axons the ability to actively control their own development. These pathways can operate independently of the extracellular environment or even independently of the cell body, where the majority of protein synthesis takes place. For example, the local translation of proteins in the axon gives it autonomous control to immediately respond to changing demands in the environment. Local translation also occurs in other cell types, but the compartmentalized control over growth is especially important for neurons since the axon can extend up to a meter away from the cell body. In addition to local translation, axonally derived transcription factors, which can be locally synthesized in or localized to the axon, provide another means to control axon development. Axonally derived transcription factors act as physiological sensors and relay information about events happening in the periphery back to the cell body in order to effectuate a global response. It has recently been shown that transcription factors belonging to the OASIS family are activated by proteolysis in axons. Following their activation by proteolytic cleavage, the transcriptionally active N-terminus of these factors is transported to the cell body to activate global transcriptional pathways. For at least one OASIS family member, CREB3L2, this cleavage event simultaneously produces the C-terminus, which is capable of undergoing secretion. The secreted C-terminus of CREB3L2 acts as an accessory ligand for the activation of Hh pathways in chondrocytes. The generation of two bioactive proteins from one transcription factor, a transcriptionally active portion and a secreted portion, raised the question of whether there was a local function for OASIS transcription factors in axons. Through my research, I identified a mechanism in which DRG axons secrete the C-terminus of CREB3L2, which promotes axon growth in a paracrine manner. CREB3L2 is a transcription factor whose translation is induced by physiological ER stress. For CREB3L2 to be active, it must be cleaved by S2P, which I found is expressed in developing axons. Following proteolysis of CREB3L2 by S2P, the secreted C-terminus of CREB3L2 promotes the formation of Shh and Ptch1 complexes along axons. I found that upon depletion of the secreted CREB3L2 C-terminus, binding of Shh to the Ptch1 receptor is diminished. Returning the CREB3L2 C-terminus to the cultures exogenously was sufficient to rescue the formation of these complexes. These results highlight an intrinsic role for Shh signaling in developing DRG axons. Moreover, these results demonstrate how ER stress machinery is recruited to axons and promotes axon outgrowth. Finally, these results illustrate a novel, neuron-intrinsic mechanism by which developing axons actively regulate their own growth.
