The synthesis of estuarine bathymetry from sparse sounding dataBurroughes, Janet Eirlys January 2001 (has links)
The two aims of the project involved: 1. Devising a system for prediction o f areas of bathymetric change within the Fal estuary 2. Formulating and evaluating a method for interpolating single beam acoustic bathymetry to avoid artefacts o f interpolation. In order to address these aims, sources of bathymetric data for the Fal estuary were identified as Truro Harbour Office, Cornwall County Council and the Environment Agency. The data collected from these sources included red wavelength Lidar, aerial photography and single beam acoustic bathymetry from a number of different years. These data were input into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and assessed for suitability for the purposes o f data comparison and hence assessment of temporal trends in bathymetry within the estuary Problems encountered during mterpolation of the acoustic bathymetry resulted in the later aim of the project, to formulate an interpolation system suitable for interpolation of the single beam, bathymetric data in a realistic way, avoiding serious artefacts of interpolation. This aim was met, successfully, through the following processes: 1. An interpolation system was developed, using polygonal zones, bounded by channels and coastlines, to prevent interpolation across these boundaries. This system, based on Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation, was referred to as Zoned Inverse Distance Weighting (ZIDW). 2. ZIDW was found, by visual inspection, to eliminate the interpolation artefacts described above. 3. The processes of identification of sounding lines and charmels, and the allocation of soundings and output grid cells to polygons, were successfully automated to allow ZIDW to be applied to large and multiple data sets. Manual intervention was maintained for processes performed most successfully by the human brain to optimise the results o f ZIDW. 4. To formalise the theory of ZIDW it was applied to a range of idealised, mathematically defined chaimels. For simple straight and regular curved, mathematical channels interpolation by the standard TIN method was found to perform as well as ZIDW. 5. Investigation of sinusoidal channels within a rectangular estuary, however, revealed that the TIN method begins to produce serious interpolation artefacts where sounding lines are not parallel to the centre lines o f channels and ridges. Hence, overall ZIDW was determined mathematically to represent the optimum method o f interpolation for single beam, bathymelric data. 6. Finally, ZIDW was refined, using data from the Humber and Gironde estuaries, to achieve universal applicability for interpolation of single beam, echo soimding data from any estuary. 7. The refinements involved allowance for non-continuous, flood and ebb type charmels; consideration of the effects of the scale of the estuary; smoothing of the channels using cubic splines; interpolation using a 'smart' ellipse and the option to reconstruct sounding lines from data that had previously been re-ordered.

Studies on Flexural Behaviour of Fly Ash-Lime-Gypsum Brick MasonryGourav, K January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Varieties of masonry units such as burnt clay bricks, stones and concrete products are used for masonry construction. Even though these materials are durable, they are considered as unsustainable options because of the issues concerning energy, environment and conservation of natural resources. The walling materials are consumed in bulk quantities and hence large quantities of natural resources are depleted. There is a need for energy efficient and environment friendly alternative materials for masonry. Fly ash is an industrial by-product from the coal based thermal power plants which can be exploited for manufacturing of masonry units such as fly ash blocks/bricks, which are an alternative for conventional masonry units. Fly ash-Lime-Gypsum (FaL-G) bricks can be manufactured by compaction of a mixture of fly ash-lime-gypsum and water. The behaviour of FaL-G brick masonry is inadequately explored area and hence the thesis is focused on understanding the flexural behaviour of FaL-G brick masonry and bond development phenomenon at FaL-G brick-mortar interface.
A brief introduction to the fly ash-based masonry units and literature review with respect to utilizing fly ash in manufacturing masonry units are presented. Characteristics of raw materials used and the procedure followed in casting of masonry units/compacts, mortar and their assemblages including testing methods have been discussed. Characteristics of FaL-G brick, mortars, FaL-G brick masonry are presented. Apart from determining the stress-strain relationships for these materials shear strength parameters of FaL-G compact, mortar and brick-mortar joint were determined. Mohr-Coulomb failure envelopes for FaL-G compact and mortar are presented.
The mechanism of bond development in masonry is discussed. FaL-G brick masonry shows considerably higher bond strength when compared with the bond strength of conventional brick masonry. Results of micro-structure analysis (SEM, XRD and TGA) of the FaL-G brick-mortar interfaces confirm the formation of chemical bond in addition to mechanical interlocking of cement hydration products into brick pores.
Flexural behaviour of FaL-G brick masonry wallettes in the two orthogonal directions was studied. The flexural strength, displacement profiles and load-displacement curves were determined, and moment-curvature relationships were established. Linear elastic analysis performed closely predicted the cracking flexural stress in FaL-G brick masonry.
A brief introduction to the computational modelling of masonry using different approaches has been presented. Literature review with respect to simplified micro-modelling approach has been discussed. The flexural behaviour of FaL-G brick masonry panels under lateral loads was predicted using a non-linear 3D finite element analysis. The finite element model reasonably predicted the flexural behaviour of FaL-G brick masonry panels. The thesis ends with summary of research work with a note on scope for further research.

Investigating the Teaching and Learning of Creative Writing in English First Additional Language in selected Grade 9 classrooms in the Western Cape01 1900 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / In this study, it is assumed that non-mother tongue speakers of English are faced with the
difficulty of writing and learning in English first additional language (FAL) or second language.
In the context of Cape Town, this applies to isiXhosa mother-tongue speaking learners who are
taught in an additional language, while their counterparts who speak either English or Afrikaans
as a home language are taught through the medium of their home languages from primary to
tertiary education. Snow (2014:17) claims that learners acquire academic language skills in the
home language and are able to transfer those skills into an additional language e.g. English. In
addition, if learners have their home language as the LoLT, language transfer may take place
easily and the home language structure can assist them when writing in an additional language
such as English. Language transfer, according to Odlin (1989:27), is the influence that
2
culminates from the differences or similarities evident between the target language and any
other acquired language. There is a belief that strong proficiency in the home language
enhances the learning of an additional language easier through language transfer (Odlin,
1989:1). According to Ellis (1994:302) errors mostly occur when there is a negative transfer
from the mother-tongue to target language. Aziakpono and Bekker (2010:49) believe that there
is certain terminology that cannot be easily transferred from the home language to the target
language. However, the issue is not necessarily the transfer of language but rather the
expression thereof, especially with individuals who use the home language more than the target
language which is often English in South Africa. With regard to language transfer, it should be
taken into account that languages have different phonetic and syntactic structures which may
impede the learning of an additional language.

Capacidade funcional de indivíduos idosos portadores da doença de Alzheimer / Study of protein Turnover in health elderly Brazilian using 15N-Glycine technique.Perroni, Gisele Gonçalves Garcia 10 December 2007 (has links)
Alzheimer\'s disease is a major public health problem, meaning that it is considered a great challenge to Geria trics and Gerontology. It is the most common cause of dementia, which leads to cognitive and functional decline and behavioral changes. However, few studies report the existing relation between motor decline (balance), strength, and their influence on function abilities as well as the occurrence of falls among the population afflicted by AD, mainly in its early stage. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the functio nal ability level in AD senior citizens and home setting adjustment for a proper environment in which they could carry out daily activities. It also aimed to identify occurrence of falls in order to provide them with a better quality of life. Methods: A survey-like descriptive epidemiological study was conducted. Thirty AD patients over 60 years old were studied. An assessment of the patients and their environment using the Functional Independence Seale was made. Results: 60% of the patients studied were female and 47% were housewives. Their modal AD time interval was 1.5 - 2.0 years, and 57% of them had had at least one fall. As for caregivers, 80% of them were female and averaged 59 years of age. As for Functional Independence Scale, a level 6 (Altered Independence) was observed in the following parameters: Bathing function (70%), sphincter control (27%), transfer function (90%), and movement function (83%). Regarding cognitive function, 100% of the patients showed a 5 level for at least one function. As re gards environment, the main risk factors were inadequate footwear, pieces of furniture on the way, toilet height, and absence of supporting railing. Conclusion: It was possible to identify cognitive changes and altered independence motor functions through the IFS. Those changes, thus, increased risks of falls posed mainly by environ mental threats. Therefore, IFS is considered a good and important instrument to asses AD patients\' functional ability.

The natural and anthropogenic changes that are occurring at the coastal zone around the world represent the greatest problem to society in this century. This problem becomes more evident due to high density of coastal cities, to growing tourist-estate speculation of those areas and to climate change that tend to trigger and accelerate the erosive processes that operating in the littoral. In this context, it?s possible perceive ever more a significant increase of problems associated to the coastal erosion and retreat of cliffs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where this study area of this search is located. The area is located in the coastal zone of the city of Ba?a Formosa/RN, in south-eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, and has a extension of about 1200 meters along the Porto beach. The main objective of this study is to analyze the stability of these cliffs in this region. Through field investigations, testings and computational analysis using the Finite Element Method and Equilibrium Limit Methods. The area was divided into four sections, and were applied checklists, and also realized characterization tests and direct shear tests with materials obtained along these sections. In this manner, it was found that the segments of cliff in this coastal zone have heights around 4 meters to 14 meters and inclinations of approximately 40? to 90?.However the constituents soils of the cliffs were classified, in general terms in accordance to Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), as clayey sands or silty sands, clays of low plasticity, clayey gravels and poorly graduaded sands. The most variegated and clayey soils belong to base of the cliff. The stability analysis showed that the safety factors ranged in section 01, from 1.92 to 4.93, in the section 02, from 1.00 to 1.43, in the section 03, from 1.36 to 1.75 , and section 04, from 1.00 to 3.64. Thus, the sections 02 and 03 were considered more unstable. However, the section 03 can be considered as the most critical section due to the absence of coastal protection structures and the narrow strip of beach.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / O litoral do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte ? caracterizada pela presen?a de dunas
e fal?sias.
a 90o
fal?sia e a inclina??o do talude.
0,50 a 5,00 metros.
condi??o saturada. / The coastline from Rio Grande do Norte state is characterized for the presence of
dunes and cliffs. The latter consist of slopes with height up to 40 meters and
inclinations ranging from 30? to 90? wich horizontal. Thus, this dissertation had as
objective the evaluation of the stability of cliff from Ponta do Pirambu in Tibau do
Sul/RN, and the realization of a parametric study on the stability of a homogeneous
cliff considering as variables the material's cohesion, the cliff height and the slope
inclination. The study in Ponta do Pirambu considered yet the possibility of the
existence of a colluvial cover with thickness ranging from 0.50 to 5.00 meters. The
analyzes were performed by Bishop method, using GEO5 software. In parametric
analysis were produced graphics that relate height cliff with the inclination, to safety
factors equals to 1.00 and 1.50; besides graphics where it is possible easily get the
lowest safety factor as from the cohesion, cliff height and its inclination. It was
concluded that these graphs are very useful to preliminary analyzes, for the definition
of critical areas in risk mappings in areas of cliffs and for determination of an
equation for obtaining the lowest safety factor function of the strength parameters
and of slope geometry. Regarding the cliff from Ponta do Pirambu, the results
showed that the cliff is subject to superficial landslides located in the points where
may there be the presence of colluvium with thicknesses greater than two meters.
However, the cliff remains stable presenting the global safety factor equal or superior
to 2.50 in the saturated condition.
