It does contain some tentative answers, however, answers that can be put into practice in the classroom, examined, modified, rejected, or accepted. The ideas and suggestions are only invitations to explore; from such exploration will come the real advancements in this important field.

HBO : brand management and subscriber aggregation, 1972-2007

The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO’s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO’s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network’s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO’s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of ‘quality’ television, their ongoing importance to the network’s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. Suggesting much longer institutional continuities and influences for understanding HBO’s success, the thesis outlines the development and influence of these strategies through a critical chronology of the network’s history. In doing so, the thesis aligns with trends for rigorous media histories that consider the origins, long-term precedent and cyclical institutional strategies that govern contemporary industry practices.

Going off the Rails: Trains, Cars, and Modernity in South Korean Film History

This thesis examines the relationship between Korean film and modernity by conducting a survey of the representation of cars, trains, and the city throughout (South) Korean film history. There have been several remarkable changes in these representations over time: the train, first the awe-inspiring symbol of Korean technological advancement in the 1890s, becomes the brutal symbol of Japanese oppression just a few decades later. The city in Korean film is politically and socially charged for most of the 20th century, a place where innocent people are morally corrupted or physically assaulted. But by the 21st century, trains and cars are now toys for action characters to manipulate, and the city is now a neutral backdrop for pure entertainment in blockbuster films such as Train to Busan (Yeon Sang-ho, 2016), Ashfall (Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, 2019), and Peninsula (Yeon Sang-ho, 2020). There are several reasons for this, one of which I propose as the inherently procapitalist and pro-modernity nature of the blockbuster film.

Locating Inter-Scandinavian Silent Film Culture : Connections, Contentions, Configurations

The thesis revisits film and film-culture history in Sweden, Denmark and Norway with a view to discourses and practices of the inter- and trans-Scandinavian in the silent era. Excluding the earliest films, but including the transition to synchronised sound, it covers the period of the 1900s to 1930 with emphasis on the 1910s and 1920s. The thesis identifies notions about the relations between the Scandinavian and the national by means of a number of case studies based on textual historical sources. As a consistent Scandinavian perspective on this period is new, the investigation substantially supplements and revises the individual national film histories of these countries. It adds missing context to national developments and makes visible border phenomena such as transnational collaborations and co-producing practices. The thesis finds that film production in Scandinavia in the silent era was orientated towards one of two poles, at times combined or in a state of negotiation: international economic ambitions or national cultural aspirations. The latter was frequently conceptualised as northern, Nordic and Scandinavian. ‘Scandinaviannesses’ performed when drawing on nature, folklore, literature and heritage, not least that of Norway, were employed for use in and out of Scandinavia by means of strategies of ‘double-entry book-keeping’.  During the period, the notion of location underwent changes from an illusory, theatrical device to an inherently meaningful entity carrying identities infused with the Scandinavian. Examining the effects of shared comprehension of language and a shared recent history of Scandinavist ideas, the thesis identifies instrumental notions of kindredness and senses of cultural proprietorship extending to the output of the neighbouring countries. These notions were mobilised selectively within film culture and motivated practical transnational collaboration from the side of the authorities as well as in trade organisations.

This diploma thesis named "Journalists and source protection in motion pictures" focuses on investigative journalists pictured in movies that have originated in Anglo-American language and cultural area. Analyzed are such movies that either have been filmed or have had their opening night in last three decades of the twentieth century or the first decade of twenty first century. From 1970s decade there is one movie analyzed while from all the other decades there are always two movies were being taken into analysis. Theoretical part of this thesis consists first of all of all necessary terms followed by several chapters about history of investigative journalism in English speaking countries. Several important personas and events from the area of investigative journalism from the twentieth century are also mentioned. Political movies from 1960s and 1970s are also briefly mentioned at this point. Briefly discussed are also principles of qualitative analysis method and necessary assumptions. Within the practical part of this thesis every movie is described and analyzed. Specific qualitative analysis method is the same in case of all the analyzed movies and results are discussed in specific subchapters by the same structure so all movies can be easily compared and cross-analyzed. O objetivo desta tese é estudar os códigos do melodrama a partir das análises de quatro filmes históricos do cineasta Steven Spielberg: Amistad (1997), Lincoln (2012), A Lista de Schindler (1993) e O Resgate do Soldado Ryan (1998). Os títulos selecionados são reconstruções cinematográficas de acontecimentos históricos que abordam momentos emblemáticos da história americana: a escravidão e a figura de Lincoln, a participação na Segunda Guerra Mundial e o extermínio dos judeus pelos nazistas. Nossa preocupação foi a de apontar como o melodrama funde-se e se impõe sobre outros gêneros, como o drama histórico, o biopic, o Holocaust Film e o war film. As polarizações entre virtude e vilania, as surpresas e obstáculos no enredo, o jogo com as emoções dos personagens e do público e as resoluções sentimentais, próprias do melodrama, em suas distintas concepções teóricas, manifestam-se cinematograficamente e de forma autoral na construção dos planos, enquadramentos, movimentos de câmera e sobretudo na referência ao olhar e às imagens. Paralelamente à análise, trazemos contribuições de historiadores e críticos que se posicionam sobre os filmes, o que resulta em um confronto instigante entre história e liberdades ficcionais próprias ao cinema de consumo massivo. / The aim of this thesis is to study the codes of the melodrama from the analyzes of four historical films of filmmaker Steven Spielberg: Amistad (1997), Lincoln (2012), Schindler\'s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). The titles selected are cinematic reconstructions of historical events that touch on emblematic moments in American history: slavery and the figure of Lincoln, participation in World War II, and extermination of Jews by the Nazis. Our concern was to point out how the melodrama merges and imposes itself on other genres, such as historical drama, biopic, Holocaust Film and war film. The polarizations between virtue and villainy, the surprises and obstacles in the plot, the play with the emotions of the characters and the public and the sentimental resolutions, proper to the melodrama, in their different theoretical conceptions, are manifested cinematographically and in an authorial way in the construction of the plans, frames, camera movements and above all in reference to the look and the images. Parallel to the analysis, we bring contributions from historians and critics who stand on the films, which results in an instigating confrontation between history and fictional freedoms proper to the mass consumer cinema

Consideramos o contexto histórico-social, relações étnicas e de gênero, a incorporação de padrões de beleza ligados à modernidade e a constância de concursos femininos, bem como o estrelismo. Ponderamos a negociação entre nossa imprensa e o star system durante o concurso. / This dissertation investigates the photogenic beauty contest held by Fox Film in Brazil in 1926-1927, in order to choose a couple to integrate the studio\'s casting in Hollywood. The research has as a source mass circulation newspapers and magazines at the time and Pedro Lima Collection documents. We consider the historical and social context, ethnic and gender relations, the incorporation of beauty standards linked to modernity and the constancy of women\'s beauty contests, as well as the stardom.
