An empirical study on the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning in Norway

Nyberg, Victoria January 2016 (has links)
Rising life expectancies together with declining birth rates have contributed to a transformation of the pension system in several countries. In turn, the transformation has resulted in a greater individual management of the pensions and thus greater demands on the individual’s skills. Previous researches have shown that financial literacy tends to be low in well-developed countries, they have also distinguished a positive relationship between an individual’s financial literacy and retirement planning. From this point of view, the increased individual management could cause concerns and create unfavorable conditions for positive economic outcomes for the society as well as the individual. The previous researches have mainly dealt with the levels of financial literacy and retirement planning and how they co-vary in cross section. The thesis intends to study the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning over time, to achieve a better understanding of the relationship. The thesis is based on a dataset from Norway, where a change in the pension system was implemented in 2011. The relationship between the individual's financial literacy and retirement planning is examined with regression analyzes. The results from the regression analyzes indicate that a change in the individual’s financial literacy do not have an impact on the retirement planning. The thesis results do not provide support for a causal relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning in Norway. The previous researches in other countries do provide support for a causal relationship. If the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning is the same or similar in an international point of view, the results raises further questions about how the relationship appears and how the mechanism works. If there is a desire to enhance individuals' retirement planning the thesis result give no simple answers to what actions that are appropriate and generate results.

Financial literacy training and financial inclusion in Lesotho

Molefe, Mamolikaliko Itumeleng January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Management, University of the Witwatersrand, in 25% fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Management (in the field of Public and Development Management), 2016 / Financial inclusion has taken centre stage in the development agenda in the 21st century. This was widely noticed after the global economic meltdown in 2008 where multinational companies faced bankruptcy and many people were negatively impacted. Financial inclusion is defined as being the state in which all people have access to appropriate and desired financial products and services. It is believed to be a key component of the financial sector and has been hailed by its proponents to be a positive driver of economic growth and poverty reduction. Financial inclusion is anchored on one pivotal concept which is financial literacy, or the ability of individuals to use knowledge and skills gained from financial education for betterment of their lives. The significance of financial inclusion has been acknowledged by many countries and Lesotho is no exception. The Support to Financial Inclusion in Lesotho (SUFIL) project was implemented with the aim of improving financial inclusion in Lesotho. This research was undertaken to ascertain the extent to which the SUFIL has achieved its aims and objectives. Overall, while there are some areas that require review or improvement, the project has had a positive impact in improving financial inclusion in Lesotho. / XL2018

Behavioural determinants of financial inclusion in Uganda

Katoroogo, Rachel Mindra January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Wits Business School, 2016 / Financial Inclusion seeks to overcome the friction that hinders markets from expanding access and use of formal financial products and services to a broad number of people. Despite the significant policy efforts and increased presence of formal financial service providers, the Ugandan economy still bears low levels of financial inclusion, especially in the rural areas. The finance growth and decision-behaviour theories substantiate the importance of understanding the psychological processes underlying observed individual judgments or choices regarding the use of formal financial services. Using Sen’s capability approach, this study examined the personal and societal capabilities that influence financial inclusion of individual financial consumers. Specifically, this study assessed whether the capabilities an individual possessed actually contributed towards their likelihood of financial inclusion. The hypothesized study relationships with financial inclusion were realized, following a positivist and quantitative approach using a cross sectional research design. The sample of 400 individuals to whom the survey questionnaire was delivered were drawn from two distinct regions of Central and Northern Uganda. The two regions represented varying levels of financial inclusion - high inclusion (urban Central) and low inclusion (rural Northern). In this study, besides the traditional regression models, structural equation modelling using Analysis of Moments (AMOS), were used to establish the causal relationships between the hypothesized study variables. The study results revealed that financial self-efficacy, financial literacy, social networks and the interaction of the personal and societal capabilities significantly contributed to an individual’s financial inclusion across the two regions. The results further revealed that the personal and societal capabilities independently, and when combined, contribute towards an individual’s financial self-efficacy. Through an assessment of the mediation effect, this study demonstrated how financial self-efficacy can boost individuals to confidently undertake financial tasks and decisions and consequently, financial inclusion in relation to their capabilities, respectively. The results provide support to Sen’s capability theory as a tool for explaining financial inclusion from a demand side perspective within the Ugandan context. / GR2018
