Moral e política: o princípio da autonomia e o reino dos fins na Filosofia Kantiana / Moral and politics: the principle of autonomy and the kingdom of ends

Ruas, Gonçalo Nunes Barrilaro 06 February 2015 (has links)
The study of the principle of autonomy, a central concept in Kant\'s moral philosophy, allow us to understand the origin of the moral law. The formula of autonomy dictates that the moral law is the result of the will and does not depend on external factors: we are co-legislators of a law that we submit to ourselves. The thesis of the unity of the categorical imperative asserts that the categorical imperative is one and only one. Therefore, when applying the categorical imperative in politics through the formula of universal law is being effectively applied by the supreme principle of morality in a sociopolitical context. The formula of the kingdom of ends makes this association more present, mainly through the analogy between sovereigns and subjects of a moral law, which in politics is through the relationship between the head of state and citizens. With the concept of \'kingdom of ends\' a step ahead is done and the idea of co-legislation is applied, giving us, we believe, by a socio-political process in the Perpetual Peace. In turn, we expose the thought of many authors who interpret moral concepts from a political point of view. However, we drifted apart this interpretation because we recognize that in Kant\'s Moral Philosophy there isn\'t a strong evidence for this assertion. The relationship is, therefore, reverse to the proposal by the Constructivist tradition: the morality is present in Political Philosophy. It may, in fact, match completely with the politics when it comes to the fundamental principles of politics. Or can serve as a constraint to certain actions that, while not of moral content, are in contradiction with it. As occurs with the hypothetical imperatives. The prudential reason, pragmatic or technical, should double their \'knees\' before the pure practical reason. Therefore we propose a parallel with concepts developed in Perpetual Peace, namely the idea of a republican form of government (republican constitution), where its members have to participate in a common legislation, and the moral politician, considered the agent responsible for applying morale (pure practical reason).

Pelvic fin locomotion in batoids

Unknown Date (has links)
Although most batoids (skates and rays) are benthic, only the skates (Rajidae) have been described as performing benthic locomotion, termed 'punting'. While keeping the rest of the body motionless, the skate's specialized pelvic fins are planted into the substrate and then retracted caudally, which thrusts the body forward. This may be advantageous for locating and feeding on prey, avoiding predators, and reducing energetic costs. By integrating kinematic, musculoskeletal, material properties, and compositional analyses across a range of morphologically and phylogenetically diverse batoids, this dissertation (i) demonstrates that punting is not confined to the skates, and (ii) provides reliable anatomical and mechanical predictors of punting ability. Batoids in this study performed true punting (employing only pelvic fins), or augmented punting (employing pectoral and pelvic fins). Despite the additional thrust from the pectoral fins, augmented punters failed to exceed the punting c apabilities of the true punters. True punters' pelvic fins had greater surface area and more specialized and robust musculature compared to the augmented punters' fins. The flexural stiffness of the main skeletal element used in punting, the propterygium, correlated with punting ability (3.37 x 10-5 - 1.80 x 10-4 Nm2). Variation was due to differences in mineral content (24.4-48-9% dry mass), and thus, material stiffness (140-2533 MPa), and second moment of area. The propterygium's radius-to-thickness ratio (mean = 5.52 +-0.441 SE) indicated that the propterygium would support true and augmented punters, but not non-punters, in an aquatic environment. All propterygia would fail on land. Geometric and linear morphometric analyses of 61 batoid pelvic girdles demonstrated that pelvic girdle shape can predict punting and swimming ability and taxonomic attribution to Order. / Characteristics of true punters' pelvic girdles, such as laterally facing fin articulations, large surface area formuscle attachment, and tall lateral pelvic processes are similar to characteristics of early sprawled-gait tetrapods' pelvic girdles. This dissertation demonstrates that punting is common in batoids, illustrates the convergent evolution of true punter and early tetrapod pelvic anatomy, and gives possible explanations for the restriction of elasmobranchs to aquatic habitats. / by Laura Jane Macesic. / Thesis ({Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Planification de mouvements avec prise en compte explicite des incertitudes géométriques

De La Rosa-Rosero, Mario Fernando 22 November 1996 (has links) (PDF)

Numerical Investigation of Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics in Rectangular Channels (AR=4:1) with Circular and Elliptical Pin Fin Arrays

Velichala, Abhishek 2011 May 1900 (has links)
The objective of current study was to numerically investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a stationary one pass rectangular channel (AR=4:1) with circular and elliptical pin fin arrays. Two types of elliptical pin fins (a SEF and an N fin whose minor axis length is equal to the diameter of the circular fin) were used. The analysis was performed with an array of six rows of staggered pin fins in the streamwise direction for Reynolds numbers (Re) of 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000. 3-D, steady simulations were performed using the low Reynolds number k-omega SST turbulence model in the FLUENT CFD code. The data predicted by the current numerical model showed favorable agreement with the experiments in the validation study. It was observed that SEF array produces minimum pressure loss and the highest thermal performance. It was also observed that N fin array produces minimum hot spots and the highest channel averaged Nusselt number ratio values.

Numerical Investigation Of Natural Convection From Vertical Plate Finned Heat Sinks

Cakar, Kamil Mert 01 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The steady-state natural convection from vertically placed rectangular fins is investigated numerically by means of a commercial CFD program called ICEPAK. The effects of geometric parameters of fin arrays on the performance of heat dissipation from fin arrays are examined. In order to simulate the different fin configurations and compare the results with literature, two experimental studies from literature are selected. Optimum fin spacing for both studies are found numerically and compared with experimental studies. The models are first verified by simulating natural convection on vertically placed flat plate and comparing the results with literature. After verification 30 different fin array configurations for the first experimental case study and 15 different fin array configurations for the second experimental case study from literature are analyzed. It is observed that the present results agree very well with the optimum fin spacing results of the experimental studies. It is also observed that the empirical correlations in the literature are conservative and the numerically obtained correlations predict higher heat transfer rates.

Performance Of Rectangular Fins On A Vertical Base In Free Convection Heat Transfer

Yazicioglu, Burak 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The steady-state natural convection heat transfer from vertical rectangular fins extending perpendicularly from vertical rectangular base was investigated experimentally. The effects of geometric parameters and base-to-ambient temperature difference on the heat transfer performance of fin arrays were observed and the optimum fin separation values were determined. Two similar experimental set-ups were employed during experiments in order to take measurements from 30 different fin configurations having fin lengths of 250 mm and 340 mm. Fin thickness was maintained fixed at 3 mm. Fin height and fin spacing were varied from 5 mm to 25 mm and 5.75 mm to 85.5 mm, respectively. 5 heat inputs ranging from 25 W to 125 W were supplied for all fin configurations, and hence, the base and the ambient temperatures were measured in order to evaluate the heat transfer rate from fin arrays. The results of experiments have shown that the convection heat transfer rate from fin arrays depends on all geometric parameters and base-to-ambient temperature difference. The effect of these parameters on optimum fin spacing was also examined, and it was realized that for a given base-to-ambient temperature difference, an optimum fin spacing value which maximizes the convective heat transfer rate from the fin array is available for every fin height. The results indicated that the optimum fin spacings are between 8.8 mm and 14.7 mm, for the fin arrays employed in this work. Using the experimental results of present study and experimental results in available literature [2,3,9,10,11,12,14], a correlation for optimum fin spacing at a given fin length and base-to-ambient temperature difference was obtained as a result of scale analysis.
