LiDAR Measurements of Afforested Bottomland Hardwoods in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is increasingly common in forestry applications, yet relatively little research has evaluated its use in quantifying carbon stocks in afforested bottomland hardwood forests. This study relates forest structural field measurements to metrics derived from low pulse density LiDAR data to assess the use of LiDAR in characterization of planted bottomland hardwood oak stands. Univariate and multivariate linear regressions were performed with field and LiDAR variables to determine relationships. The height-related field dependent variables average height, maximum height, and individual tree volume had the highest adjusted R-squared values of 0.5-0.6 (P<0.0001) for the univariate models and adjusted R-squared values of 0.70-0.79 for the multivariate models. These findings suggest that low-density LiDAR is capable of assessing forest structure and suggests that further research evaluating LiDAR quantification of bottomland hardwood carbon stocks is warranted.

The basic starting point of the project is to understand needs of mentally disabled people and an evaluation of a badly usable floodplain. The draft proposes creation of an activity park, an exemplary garden and a leisure- and integration centre object. The centre generates an important point on the route from the city centre to the neighbouring spa town and connects two significant areas in the town, which associate various cultural and sports facilities. The design of flood-protection works was evolving from a version with a partial increase of the terrain and placement of a flood-protection dyke up to the nature-close arrangements in a terrain-dyke form, which doesn´t inhibit natural processes of the Bečva river and maintains an active flood zone in an almost unchanged shape. The building program was formulated in two versions. A creative café connected with a gastro-workshop is fundamental in the both versions. In the building program A a horticulture is emphasised, the building program B is more aimed at a creative-workshops. The new building is reacting to the needs for integration of disabled people and it's creating a place for “meeting”. The public space is creating by the composition of volume containing various functions. The garden- and park-arrangements in the studied area were chosen in the way to fully support the character of the planned leisure-centre. The draft is composed by geometrically alternating areas with different functions, which are connected by a promenade going along the dyke-crown.

Storm- and Tide-Dominated Shoreface Deposits, Milk River Formation (Upper Cretaceous), Southern Alberta

<p> Several sections of the Milk River Formation were measured and studied in detail at Writing on Stone Provincial Park in Southern Alberta. The observed vertical facies succession consists of, from base to top: 1) interbedded, sharp-based sandstones and bioturbated shales; 2) dominantly swaley cross-stratified sandstones; 3) dominantly cross-bedded sandstones; 4) non-marine shales and various thin sandstone and lignite interbeds; 5) local, non-marine cross-bedded sandstones.</p> <p> The sharp-based sandstones have been episodically emplaced on top of offshore muds. The dominantly swaley cross-stratified sandstone is a storm-dominated shoreface deposit in which fairweather deposits (eg. medium scale cross-bedding), are rarely preserved. The cross-bedded sandstones record deposition in tidally-influenced estuaries which cut into beach and shoreface deposits. The section is capped by vertically accreted muds and thin lignite seams which represent floodplain and terrestrial deposition landwards of the strandline. The non-marine cross-bedded sandstones are local representatives of fluvial channel deposits.</p> <p> Paleoflow directions measured in the cross-bedded sandstones indicate that the regional strandline was oriented southwest - northeast at Writing on Stone.</p> <p> Petrographic analysis of the swaley cross-stratified and cross-beddedm sandstones indicate that they are Subarkoses. Floodplain is an important location for the economic and social development of society throughout history, although it afflicted by different disasters like floods and bank erosion from time to time. Population dynamics and distribution trends have important effects on the landscape and society. Population dynamics in floodplains influenced mostly by the flood events and related human activities to protect themselves and the properties. Thus, floodplain population dynamics is vital to understand human-nature relationships, disaster risk assessment, flood forecasting and flood damage costs in the floodplains. Economic losses and fatalities due to flood events increase with increased flood frequency and flood magnitude. Extreme hydrological changes are responsible for such changes in the flood events. Population growth, urbanization and developmental activities worsened the situation further in the floodplain areas. Learning effect, i.e. flood memory is noticeable after the flood which diminishes with time, however, levee, which is a popular flood protection measure, causes further reduction of learning effect. Researchers suggest that levees create a false sense of safety and can influence the mobilization of floodplain population. Several pieces of research indicate that along with flood events and intervention measures, inundation depth, durations, flood type (coastal/ riverine), economic, technological and political characteristics of the societies influence flood memory, hence, influence floodplain population dynamics. However, long term floodplain population dynamics and how it is related to different flood-related, i.e. hydrological and sociological variables are yet to be confirmed. Flood is one of the major natural disasters in the United States. About 10% of the population lives in the 100-year and 500-year floodplain of the United States. This study carried out to investigate the long-term trend of floodplain population dynamics in the USA and how the dynamics changes from country to state to county level considering Arkansas State and Sebastian County to observe the difference. Also, the relationships of floodplain population dynamics with hydrological and sociological variables such as flood events, damage, intervention measures and poverty assessed in the national, state and county level. Then the dynamics of the national level, the state (Arkansas) level and the county (Sebastian) level were compared to identify changes in dynamics from macro to micro-scale. Floodplain population dynamics evaluated in terms of population growth rate and the ratio of floodplain population to the total population from 1790 – 2010. The median centroids of the population growth rate from 1790 – 2010 were estimated to observe the changes in the central tendency of the population growth rate in the total area and in the floodplain overtime to locate the typical place of floodplain population growth. High-resolution raster image (1 km x 1 km) of historical population data and a high-resolution raster image (250 m x 250 m) of floodplain data were analysed using ArcGIS to evaluate floodplain population dynamics. Historical data regarding flood events, damage, structural and non- structural flood intervention measures and poverty from available databases were extracted, processed and analysed to establish the relationship among population dynamics, hydrological and social variables. Finally, the population dynamics of the three levels were compared statistically and discussed for changes. It is found that the central tendency of the total population growth rate and floodplain population growth rate of the USA shifts from east to west direction. The central tendency of the overall population growth rate located near the lower Mississippi river basin in the 1800s. It is consistent near the geographical centroid of the USA in Kansas since 1900. For the floodplain population, the central tendency of the growth rate stayed consistent in Arkansas from 1910 – 2010, i.e. in the lower Mississippi river basin. This location indicates the floodplains in Arkansas was preferable for floodplain population settlement for many decades. Change in floodplain population proportion of the whole country USA from 1790 – 2010 shows that the proportion of floodplain population is more than 80% during the initial years of settlement. Then it reduced to less than 40% over time. At the state level – Arkansas, the proportion of floodplain population is also more than 80% during initial settlement and reduced to less than 60% over time for counties with high percentage floodplain area. Flood events, structural and non-structural protection measures influenced floodplain population dynamics over time and learning effect, i.e. social memory of flood found was seven years. At the county level- Sebastian county, Arkansas, the proportion of floodplain population varies significantly with a variance of 0.04 and a standard deviation of 0.19. The ratio of floodplain population in Sebastian was 29% in 1820, which increased and decreased over the years and about 70% in 2010. In addition to flood events, different intervention measures, the floodplain population dynamics in the Sebastian county are influenced by the social, economic and political phenomenon, examining which is out of the scope of this study. The learning effect of flood seems to be eight years in the case of Sebastian county. The population dynamics influenced by a different social, geographical, economic, political and hydrological phenomenon which makes it a complicated system to comprehend within the present scope of the study. The result shows that the floodplain population dynamics can vary for different geographical scale. Therefore, the geographic extent should also need to consider while using population dynamics in flood disaster management and mitigation strategy development, policy formulation and implementation. / Flodslätter är viktiga platser för samhällets ekonomiska samt sociala utveckling och har varit det sedan är lång tid tillbaka, även om de från och till har drabbats av olika katastrofer såsom översvämning och erosion. Översvämning är en av de största naturliga katastrofer som sker i USA. Ungefär 10 % av befolkningen bor i 100- och 500-års flodslätter som emellertid förändras på grund av olika anledningar, inklusive översvämningar. I denna studie undersöks den tillfälliga relationen mellan översvämning, relaterad skada, olika ingripande åtgärder och fattigdomsnivå med en befolkningsdynamik i flodslättsområden. Vidare sker denna undersökning i tre olika nivåer – nationellt: USA som ett helt land, stats-nivå: Arkansas och län: Sebastian County, Arkansas där de olika dynamikerna i de tre nivåerna jämförs. På den nationella nivån utvärderades befolkningsdynamiken med avseende på flodslätten till den totala populationen och befolkningstillväxt. Resultatet visar att befolkningsdynamiken förändras beroende på om den betraktas ur ett nationellt, statligt eller läns perspektiv. Ur ett nationellt perspektiv flyttar flodslättsbefolkningar till olika områden med tiden. Ur ett statligt perspektiv är flodslättsbefolkningar känsliga mot översvämningar, skada och olika ingripande åtgärder. På länsnivå, utöver översvämningsrelaterade variabler, är flodslättsbefolkningar känsliga mot andra socio-ekonomiska faktorer som inte behöver vara relaterade till översvämningar. Resultatet indikerar således att översvämningar inte alltid behöver vara den faktorn som styr befolkningsdynamiken i flodslättsområden på den lokala nivån samt beslutet att flytta till en flodslätt påverkas av olika socio- ekonomiska faktorer, inklusive översvämning. På den nationella nivån kan däremot både påverkan av översvämningar och relaterade variabler på befolkningsdynamiken i flodslättsområden observeras.

Comparison of Neighborhood Demographics and Post-Buyout Land Use Development in Harris County, Texas, USA

Recent research suggests that race and ethnicity influence post-buyout land management in Harris County, Texas, yet lacked systematic empirical evidence to fully understand the relationship between management and demographics. To address this gap, this study analyzes post-buyout land use management practices and compares them with the socio-economic characteristics of the adjacent neighborhood at the block level in Harris County, Texas, an area with a long buyout history. I first identified post-buyout land use management practices in Harris County through county records and photo documentation of approximately 2000 buyout sites through fieldwork from 2017-2022. Second, using Ode and colleagues' framework for identifying visual characteristics on the landscape, I developed an index and evaluated post-buyout land use management practices for aesthetics, utility, and function. Finally, I spatially analyzed the socio-demographic composition of buyout neighborhoods using U.S. Census American Community Survey 5-year data (2017-2021) and compared it with post-buyout land use management practices in ArcGIS. From this spatial analysis, I identified differences in post-buyout land management that homeownership status, race, and ethnicity affected post-buyout land management. Most buyout properties in Harris County are managed as mowed, vacant lots regardless of socio-demographics; however, litter and debris were more prominent in predominantly Black neighborhoods. Of note, higher utility land uses were more frequent in predominantly white neighborhoods, but buyout sites developed into parks were located in lower-income and predominantly Hispanic areas suggesting variance in land use by socio-demographics.

Basin-scale spatiotemporal analysis of hydrologic floodplain connectivity

Floodplain inundation often provides water quality benefits by trapping sediment and biogeochemically transforming other pollutants. Hydrologic floodplain connectivity is a measure of water exchanges and interactions between the main channel and the floodplain via surface (inundation) and subsurface (groundwater) connections. Using an automated model combining GIS and numerical analysis software, this study examined floodplain inundation patterns and measured floodplain connectivity for the Mahantango Creek watershed (Pennsylvania, USA). Connectivity was quantified by developing a metric that included inundation area and duration. Long-term hydrographs at each reach in the watershed were developed via QPPQ (Flow-Percentile-Percentile-Flow) methodology using regional regression analysis to calculate the ungauged flow duration curves (FDC). Inundation area (normalized to stream length) was found to increase with drainage area, suggesting larger streams have more area available for biogeochemical activity. Annual connectivity increased with drainage area, suggesting larger streams, having higher connectivity, should be the focus of individual reach restoration projects due to higher potential for water quality benefits. Across the watershed as a whole, however, the total annual connectivity across first order streams was greater than higher order streams, suggesting the collection of small streams in a watershed may have a stronger effect on outlet water quality. Connectivity was consistently higher during the non-growing season, which was attributed to higher flows. Despite higher connectivity during the non-growing season, increased floodplain biological activity may be negated by low temperatures, reducing microbial activity. Correlations between land use and connectivity were also found, emphasizing dynamics between flow, channel morphology, and floodplain inundation. / Master of Science

Surface Water and Groundwater Hydraulics, Exchange, and Transport During Simulated Overbank Floods Along a Third-Order Stream in Southwest Virginia

Restoring hydrologic connectivity between the channel and floodplain is a common practice in stream and river restoration. Floodplain hydrology and hydrogeology impact biogeochemical processing and potential nutrient removal, yet rigorous field evaluations of surface and groundwater flows during overbank floods are rare. We conducted five sets of experimental floods to mimic floodplain reconnection. Experimental floods entailed pumping stream water onto an existing floodplain swale, and were conducted throughout the year to capture seasonal variation. Each set of experimental floods entailed two replicate floods occurring on successive days to test the effect of varying antecedent moisture. Water levels and specific conductivity were measured in surface water, shallow soils, and deep soils, along with surface flow into and out of the floodplain. Total flood water storage increased as vegetation density increased and or antecedent moisture decreased. Hydrologic flow mechanisms were spatially and temporally heterogeneous in surface water, in groundwater, as well as in exchange between the two and appeared to coexist in small areas. Immediate propagation of hydrostatic pressure into deep soils was suggested at some locations. Preferential groundwater flow was suggested in locations where the pressure and electrical conductivity signals propagated too fast for bulk Darcy flow through porous media. Preferential flow was particularly obvious where the pressure signal bypassed an intermediate depth but was observed at a deeper depth. Bulk Darcy flow in combination with preferential flow was suggested at locations where the flood pressure and electrical conductivity signal propagated more slowly yet arrived too quickly to be described using Darcy's Law. Finally, other areas exhibited no transmission of pressure or conductivity signals, indicating a complete lack of groundwater flow. Antecedent moisture affected the flood pulse arrival time and in some cases vertical connectivity with deeper sediments while vegetation density altered surface water storage volume. Understanding the variety of exchange mechanisms and their spatial variability will help understand the observed variability of floodplain impacts on water quality, and ultimately improve the effectiveness of floodplain restoration in reducing excess nutrient in river basins. / Master of Science

Flooding dynamics and nutrient retention in the middle Ebro floodplain: experimental assessment and numerical modeling

El presente trabajo destaca la simulación numérica como herramienta capaz de reproducir y predecir los principales procesos que producen y mantienen los ecosistemas de llanuras de inundación. Para ello, la dinámica del flujo, la actividad geomorfológica, la sedimentación y la captura de nutrientes de la llanura de inundación, son evaluadas experimentalmente. Seguidamente, los datos experimentales son incluidos en un modelo numérico para desarrollar una herramienta completa de simulación capaz de predecir la dinámica del flujo, la actividad geomorfológica, la sedimentación, el aporte de nutrientes del río a la llanura de inundación así como la captación de los mismos. El estudio se desarrolla en un segmento del río Ebro (NE España), representativo de su tramo medio meandriforme. El estudio emplea un modelo numérico bidimensional (2D), basado en las ecuaciones 2D de las aguas poco profundas y calculado a partir del método de los volúmenes finitos. La calibración del modelo se basa en medidas experimentales realizadas en la llanura de inundación bajo dos caudales estacionarios. La validación del modelo se llevó a cabo comparando los resultados numéricos con las medidas experimentales de nivel de agua y extensión del área inundada realizadas durante los cinco eventos de riada ocurridos en el año 2007 (79+13 % área; 0.27+0.05m nivel de agua). Las simulaciones fueron utilizadas para analizar la dinámica actual de inundación de la llanura así como su actividad geomorfológica. Como resultado, se obtuvo que el presente régimen de caudales y sobretodo la estructura morfológica de la llanura, no resulta suficiente para generar una actividad geomorfológica tal que mantenga el mosaico cambiante de hábitats característico de los ecosistemas de llanura de inundación. Some new approaches to measuring willingness to pay: a case study of flood risk reduction in Roanoke, Virginia

Benefits from a flood control project that accrue to a landowner are defined as the amount the landowner is willing to pay for the reduction in flood risk. The primary method utilized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to estimate a residential landowner's benefits is the property damages avoided method. Only under a set of restrictive assumptions will this method accurately estimate landowner willingness to pay. Therefore, several alternative techniques, such as the hedonic price method, are approved for use by the Corps but it is not known how they compare. The purpose of this study is to examine the benefit measures from the property damages avoided and hedonic price methods and two new measures, restricted willingness to pay (RWTP) and restricted willingness to accept (RWTA). The measures RWTP and RWTA are biased estimates of willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to accept (WTA) where the direction of the bias is known. In addition, the methods that calculate these measures, the RWTP and RWTA methods, do not require data on income or an aggregator for the prices of all goods not in the analysis. Benefit estimates from the hedonic price and RWTP methods provide upper and lower bounds on WTP for non-marginal reductions in flood risk and converge for marginal reductions. / Master of Science
