Análise de fluxo de carga eletrônica em modos vibracionais / Analysis of electronic charge flux in vibrational modes

Teodoro, Tiago Quevedo 19 February 2013 (has links)
Several methodologies were developed in the last few decades in order to obtain a property which could represent quantitatively electronic charge distributions in a simple way. The fundamental quantity in this treatment is called atomic charge. However, as long as there is not an agreement about the most indicated method to determine atomic charges for general systems or responses under study, it is necessary to analyze, comparatively, how these methods behave in given situations and how the values derived from them respond in each case. Hence, an investigation including charges and related quantities as charge flux and atomic dipole flux, which are of interest to vibrational analysis, was done by means of values resulting from four formalisms, that are, Mulliken, NPA, CHELPG and QTAIM. In this study were also evaluated the changes in such dynamic properties when the calculations are done by means of different methods, as Hartree-Fock and methods that include electron correlation (MP2, MP4(SDQ) and CCSD) and, with different basis sets as cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ and cc-pVQZ. The systems analyzed were diatomic and linear triatomic molecules (HF, HCl, LiH, NaH, NaCl, LiF, NaF, LiCl, BF, AlF, BeO, MgO, CO, FCl, CO2, CS2, OCS, HCN and HNC) including diverse bonding character, such as highly ionic or covalent bonds along with multiple bonds. Also, charge and charge flux parameters in chlorofluoromethane molecules (CH4, CH3Cl, CH3F, CH2Cl2, CH2F2, CH2ClF, CHCl3, CHF3, CHCl2F, CHClF2, CCl2F2, CClF3, CFCl3, CCl4 and CF4) were studied to analyze the effects in these properties during the exchange of substituent atoms. Considering the data obtained, one can infer that only NPA and QTAIM formalisms result in satisfactory convergence patterns with chosen methods and/or basis set sizes during the determination of charge and charge flux values. However, only QTAIM charge fluxes seem to follow certain chemical considerations, as low values for charge flux in a bond enlargement in systems with a predominant ionic character close to their equilibrium geometry. The Mulliken formalism shows high dependence and convergence issues in basis set size increments, as well as some inconsistent values. On other hand, CHELPG formalism is not suited to the finite approach for numerical derivatives in its two-point version. The study of substituent effects in chlorofluoromethanes reinforces the performance of QTAIM when compared to other formalisms. While CHELPG returned inconsistent oscillations in plots against the number of chlorine/fluorine atoms, NPA and Mulliken exhibited some sensibility with the change of substituent, though the flux values observed in a few cases are in disagreement with the tendencies expected when the hydrogen atoms are switched by chlorine or fluorine atoms.

Cryogenic soil processes in a changing climate / Kryogena mark processer i ett föränderligt klimat

Becher, Marina January 2016 (has links)
A considerable part of the global pool of terrestrial carbon is stored in high latitude soils. In these soils, repeated cycles of freezing and thawing creates soil motion (cryoturbation) that in combination with other cryogenic disturbance processes may play a profound role in controlling the carbon balance of the arctic soil. Conditions for cryogenic soil processes are predicted to dramatically change in response to the ongoing climate warming, but little is known how these changes may affect the ability of arctic soils to accumulate carbon. In this thesis, I utilize a patterned ground system, referred to as non-sorted circles, as experimental units and quantify how cryogenic soil processes affect plant communities and carbon fluxes in arctic soils. I show that the cryoturbation has been an important mechanism for transporting carbon downwards in the studied soil over the last millennia. Interestingly, burial of organic material by cryoturbation appears to have mainly occurred during bioclimatic events occurring around A.D. 900-1250 and A.D. 1650-1950 as indicated by inferred 14C ages. Using a novel photogrammetric approach, I estimate that about 0.2-0.8 % of the carbon pool is annually subjected to a net downward transport induced by the physical motion of soil. Even though this flux seems small, it suggests that cryoturbation is an important transporter of carbon over centennial and millennial timescales and contributes to translocate organic matter to deeper soil layers where respiration proceeds at slow rates. Cryogenic processes not only affect the trajectories of the soil carbon, but also generate plant community changes in both species composition and abundance, as indicated by a conducted plant survey on non-sorted circles subjected to variable differential frost heave during the winter. Here, disturbance-tolerant plant species, such as Carex capillaris and Tofieldia pusilla, seem to be favoured by disturbance generated by the differential heave. Comparison with findings from a previous plant survey on the site conducted in the 1980s suggest that the warmer temperatures during the last decades have resulted in decreased differential heave in the studied non-sorted circles. I argue that this change in cryogenic activity has increased abundance of plants present in the 1980s. The fact that the activity and function of the non-sorted circles in Abisko are undergoing changes is further supported by their contemporary carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes. Here, my measurements of CO2 fluxes suggest that all studied non-sorted circles act as net CO2 sources and thus that the carbon balance of the soils are in a transition state. My results highlight the complex but important relationship between cryogenic soil processes and the carbon balance of arctic soils.

Humidity Structures in the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer / Fuktighetsstrukturer i det marina atmosfäriska gränsskiktet

Svensson, Andreas January 2002 (has links)
The turbulence structure over the sea was studied with the emphasis on humidity. The data sets used came from the island of Östergarnsholm outside Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The study included spectral and quadrant analyses of the wind, temperature and humidity parameters from one measuring level. The wave state of the sea was deduced from data from a wave rider buoy anchored 4 km from the site. Two turbulence instruments for humidity were compared, the MIUU instrument (hot wire) and an open pass infrared gas analyser from LI-COR. The comparison showed that the LI-COR instrument resolved the high frequency fluctuations of the humidity better. The unstable cospectra of the sensible and latent heat fluxes were studied and categorised. It was found that many cospectra have two or more maxima. The higher frequency maxima gained influence when the stratification became near neutral. The quadrant analyses showed that the structures of humidity flux were similar to those of the heat flux. The sources of the flux were studied using different ratios. The ratio between events of moist updrafts and dry downdrafts were extensively studied. It was shown that the events of moist updrafts were more dominating during swell than during growing sea. When the results of the spectral and quadrant analyses were combined, it was shown that the smaller sized eddies of heat dominate the events of warm updrafts and that the large eddies dominate the cold downdrafts. The bulk transfer number for moisture, the Dalton number (CE), was found to be almost constant with stratification for unstable runs. The mean value was calculated to (1.0±0.3)·10-3.

The Influence of Waves on the Heat Exchange over Sea / Våginflytandet på värmeutbytet över hav

Sahlée, Erik January 2002 (has links)
The main focus of this study is the influence of waves on the heat transfer over sea. In particular, the bulk transfer coefficient CH (the Stanton number), has been investigated for possible wave influence. Measurements from the site Östergarnsholm in the Baltic Sea have been used. The site has a large sector with undisturbed over water fetch. Data during the period 1995-1999 have been used. It is shown that CH behaves differently as it approach z/L=0 from the unstable side depending on the wave state. During growing sea, CH makes a rapid drop as it passes over neutrality, strikingly different from swell conditions where CH makes a much ’smoother’ transition. This difference is also shown to exist for the kinematic heat flux. Based on the definition of CH, it is suggested that one of the reasons of CH’s different behaviour for different stratification and wave state, is ought to be sought in the kinematic heat flux itself. A comparison of the w,θ cospectra during growing sea and swell conditions, showed differences. For growing sea, the larger size eddies dominates the heat flux during unstable conditions. There is no significant difference in peak frequency for different grade of instability. The swell cases showed a more inconsistent behaviour as it approached neutrality, with the peak frequency shifting for different stability ranges. The correlation coefficient between u, the longitudinal wind component, and w, the vertical wind component, Ru,w is also investigated in this study. It is shown that Ru,w is exposed to some wave influence. A comparison of Ru,w as a function of wave age, for neutral and non-neutral stratification is made. For swell cases and non-neutral stratification Ru,w makes a rapid drop and assumes values close to zero. This is not seen for the neutral cases although there is a slight decrease. It is concluded that a certain amount of positive heat flux and inactive turbulence is needed to see this drop in the correlation coefficient.

Emission of methane from northern lakes and ponds

Wik, Martin January 2016 (has links)
Northern lakes and ponds are abundant and emit large amounts of the potent climate forcer methane to the atmosphere at rates prone to change with amplified Arctic warming. In spite of being important, fluxes from surface waters are not well understood. Long-term measurements are lacking and the dominant and irregular transport mode ebullition (bubbling) is rarely quantified, which complicate the inclusion of lakes and ponds in the global methane budget. This thesis focuses on variations in emissions on both local and regional scales. A synthesis of methane fluxes from almost all studied sites constrains uncertainties and demonstrates that northern lakes and ponds are a dominant source at high latitudes. Per unit area variations in flux magnitudes among different types of water bodies are mainly linked to water depth and type of sediment. When extrapolated, total area is key and thus post-glacial lakes dominate emissions over water bodies formed by peat degradation or thermokarst processes. Further, consistent multiyear measurements in three post-glacial lakes in Stordalen, northern Sweden, reveal that seasonal ebullition, primarily driven by fermentation of acetate, can be predicted by easily measured parameters such as temperature and heat energy input over the ice-free season. Assuming that most water bodies respond similarly to warming, this thesis also suggests that northern lakes and ponds will release substantially more methane before the end of the century, primarily as a result of longer ice-free seasons. Improved uncertainty reductions of both current and future estimates rely on increased knowledge of landscape-level processes related to changes in aquatic systems and organic loading with permafrost thaw, as well as more high-quality measurements, seldom seen in contemporary data. Sampling distributed over entire ice-free seasons and across different depth zones is crucial for accurately quantifying methane emissions from northern lakes and ponds. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Manuscript.</p>

The Effects of Tidal Forcing on Nutrient Fluxes in the Tidal, Freshwater James River Estuary, VA

Devore, Dana L 01 January 2016 (has links)
A 12-month study (January to December 2015) focused on the effects of tidal forcing on nutrient fluxes in the tidal, freshwater segment of the James River Estuary (JRE). Discrete sampling of nutrient chemistry and continuous monitoring of tidal discharge were used to determine the volume and timing of the tides, and differences in nutrient concentrations between incoming and outgoing tides. The goal of this study was to improve understanding of tidal influence on nutrient fluxes and their role in nutrient transport to the lower estuary. Results suggested that differences in nutrient concentrations between incoming and outgoing tides were small throughout the year. This finding suggests that nutrient fluxes at the study site, near the tidal fresh-oligohaline boundary of the James, are largely determined by tidal volume owing to weak concentrations gradients. Changes in water quality during seaward and landward tidal excursions into deeper versus shallower segments were analyzed to infer biogeochemical processes. Differences in oxygen production and nitrate utilization suggest greater autotrophy during landward excursions, consistent with more favorable light conditions. This work was conducted as a collaborative effort between Virginia Commonwealth University, the USGS, Randolph-Macon College, and Washington and Lee University participating in the “Mountains to the Sea” project.

Global warming : carbon-nutrient interactions and warming effects on soil carbon dynamics

Asandei, Ancuta January 2014 (has links)
In order to predict how terrestrial ecosystems will respond to global change, there is growing recognition that we need to better understand linkages between plant and soil processes. Previously the factors and processes with potential to influence the terrestrial carbon (C) cycle have been investigated in isolation from each other. This study investigated the interactions of nutrient availability and warming in controlling the soil carbon dynamics, with regards to the fate of already sequestered carbon in soil, under conditions of increasing atmospheric temperatures. The project objectives were addressed by three independent experiments designed to explain specific components of the carbon-nutrient cycle interactions, and the findings brought together to describe the implications for future soil carbon storage. The main measurements collected throughout this project included soil carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes, partitioned into autotrophic and heterotrophic components, net ecosystem exchange and respiration fluxes, and background soil moisture and temperature data, backed by gas, soil and biomass analyses. In the two field experiments, these measurements were taken from plots with or without any inorganic nutrient additions or in the presence or absence of legumes providing biological nitrogen addition to the ecosystem. In the laboratory, temperature and nutrient availability were manipulated within the ecosystem. The reduction in decomposition rates, without reduction of productivity as a result of inorganic nutrient additions, indicated the potential for increasing C storage. There was also evidence that nutrient availability controls the strength of the link between plant and soil processes in semi-natural grasslands. The yields, decomposition rates and soil C fluxes recorded in the presence and absence of legumes provided some evidence of N2 fixation, improving ecosystem productivity and soil properties while reducing soil C effluxes, in a managed grassland. In the laboratory, the warming of soils from lysimeters with and without plants, receiving or not receiving fertiliser, supported the findings from field experiments regarding the importance of the soil-plant link in controlling C fluxes. However, C stocks and δ13C analyses showed that over a year’s worth of warming and nutrient manipulations made little difference to the amount of C stored in the soil, indicating that edaphic factors have greater control over the response of C dynamics to increased temperatures.

Diagnostic de la contamination sédimentaire par les métaux/métalloïdes dans la rade de Toulon et mécanismes controlant leur mobilité / Diagnostic of the metals/metalloids contamination in the Toulon bay sediments and mechanisms controlling their mobility

Tessier, Erwan 15 May 2012 (has links)
This study deals with the assessment of sediment contamination levels by trace metals in the Toulon bay, a semi-closed Mediterranean area submitted to heavy anthropogenic inputs. The sampling of interface cores in 52 points located in thewhole bay allowed establishing a precise mapping of the sedimentary characteristics and the metals/metalloids contents. The obtained results from the surface sediments revealed a significant contamination of the bay (especially for Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn), mainly in the most enclosed parts of the small bay. There, the levels may exceed by several orders of magnitude the limits concerning dredging operations defined by the French legislation. The observed contamination distribution clearly indicated an export from the small to the large bay (normally less exposed) probably governed by hydrodynamic processes, responsible for the contaminated sediment resuspension. The sedimentary profiles of interface cores sampled in contrasted contamination areas revealed the presence of systematic contamination peaks in the first 20 cm. Taking into account the calculated sedimentation rate, this would demonstrate that the Toulon bay was submitted to a strong multi-contamination, probably linked to the 2nd world war. The analysis of interstitial waters (physico-chemical parameters, major, trace metals, and diagenetic tracers) allowed studying trace metals mobility. The obtained profiles appeared mainly controlled by diagenetic mechanisms and showed the major role of the main carrier phases present in the sediments (oxyhydroxides of Fe and Mn, sulphides). The modeling of these profiles led to the determination of the diffusive fluxes at the sediment/water interface, and so, to the action of the sediment as a sink or a source of contamination for the water column. The calculated outgoing diffusive fluxes appeared relatively low in comparison to the total contents measured in the sediment, proving that the main part of the studied trace metals remains in the sediment. Finally, resuspension experiments in lab and on field were performed with the aim to simulate different possible scenarios (storm, nautical traffic, dredging). Under the studied conditions, the remobilization can be low for some trace metals (e.g. As, Hg), but it may contrariwise be quite important for others (e.g. Cd, Cu, Pb) leading to a non-negligible contamination of the water column.

Summer CO2 fluxes : A field study from three large lakes in Sweden

Beijer, Martin, Skoglund, Madeleine January 2019 (has links)
Increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is a contributing cause to climate change. To give a better understanding, natural sources of CO2 is as important as anthropogenic sources, such as burning fossil fuels. The current role of large boreal lakes as emitters of CO2 are poorly understood and there is a clear lack of data from different types of systems. The aim of this thesis was to examine CO2 fluxes from Roxen, Glan and Vättern, three large lakes in Sweden. The purpose of the study was also to compare different approaches to get empirical CO2 flux data, and to investigate if there was difference between the lakes and study periods. Floating chambers were used as method with both direct measured fluxes and calculated fluxes. The direct fluxes were measured with sensors equipped inside the chambers. The calculated fluxes were obtained with gas samples from the chambers, water samples and wind speed in k-wind models. The results showed both temporal and spatial variability between the periods and the lakes. The results also showed a difference between the methods, where CO2 fluxes from sensors (direct measurements) ranged from -36 to 152 mmol m-2 d-1 and the calculated fluxes from the CC-model (Cole &amp; Caraco 1998) ranged from –29 to 58 mmol m-2 d-1.
