Příprava grafenu a výzkum jeho fyzikálních vlastností / Fabrication of Graphene and Study of its Physical Properties

This doctoral thesis is focused on the preparation of graphene layers by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and their utilization for fabrication and characterization of field effect transistors. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with different methods of graphene production and measurement of its transport properties. In the first part of the experimental section the growth of polycrystalline graphene and individual graphene crystals with sizes up to 300 m is investigated. Further, graphene layer was also grown on an atomically flat copper foils, which were fabricated in order to achieve the growth of graphene of higher quality. Subsequently, the transport properties of field effect transistors produced from the grown layers were measured. The last two chapters deal with a doping of graphene layer by gallium atoms and X-ray radiation. Whereas the deposition of gallium atoms on the graphene surface causes chemical doping of graphene layer by charge transfer, X-ray irradiation of graphene field effect transistors induces the ionization of positively charged defects in dielectrics, which electrostatically dope a graphene layer.

A testing system MTS Tytron 250 with an original construction was bought at the Institute of Physics of Materials, AVCR v.v.i. The main aim of this diploma thesis was to obtain experiences with the controlling of the system and with its advantages and limitations. The tensile tests were performed on Al fibres with diameters of 125 micrometer, 180 micrometer a 500 micrometer, nylon fibres of 250 micrometer and 500 micrometer and tensile and cyclic tests on Al foil of 77 micrometer in thickness. It was found that the machine is suitable for testing of either subtle specimens with low loading forces or specimens with low stiffness as e.g. polymers or very long metallic or ceramic fibres. On the other side, the Tytrom system is not able to perform tests on specimens with a high stiffness and high loading forces. Material parameters were determined with a high reproducibility. Advantages and limitations of several types of subtle specimen's fixation into the grips were studied too.

Influence of the sweep angle on the leading edge vortex and its relation to the power extraction performance of a fully-passive oscillating-plate hydrokinetic turbine prototype

Oscillating-foil hydrokinetic turbines have gained interest over the years to extract energy from renewable sources. The influence of the sweep angle on the performance of a fully-passive oscillating-plate hydrokinetic turbine prototype was investigated experimentally in the present work. The sweep angle was introduced to promote spanwise flow along the plate in order to manipulate the leading edge vortex (LEV) and hydrodynamically optimize the performance of the turbine. In the present work, flat plates of two configurations were considered: a plate with a 6° sweep angle and an unswept plate (control), which were undergoing fully-passive pitch and heave motions in uniform inflow at the Reynolds numbers ranging from 15 000 to 30 000. The resulting kinematic parameters and the energy extraction performance were evaluated for both plates. Planar (2D) particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to obtain patterns of the phase-averaged out-of-plane vorticity during the oscillation cycle. The circulation in the wake was then related to the induced-forces on the plate by calculating the moments of vorticity of the LEV with respect to the pitching axis of the plate. Tomographic (3D) PIV was implemented in evaluating the influence of the spanwise flow on the dynamics of the vortex structure in three-dimensional space. The rate of deformation of the vortex length was quantified by calculating the deformation terms embedded in the vorticity equations, then linked to the stability of the vortex. The results show evidence of delay of the shedding of LEV and increased vortex stability, in the case of the swept plate. The manipulation of the LEV by the spanwise flow was related to the induced kinematics exhibited by the prolonged heave forces experienced by the swept plate, which led to the higher power extraction performance at high inflow velocities. In the presence of spanwise flow, positive vortex stretching along the vortex line increased the stabilization of the vortex core and prevented the onset of helical vortex breakdown, observed in the case of the unswept plate. The use of the sweep profile on the plate has led to the improvement of energy extraction performance of the fully-passive hydrokinetic turbine. / Graduate

This is a study ofD.RZ. Ntuli's radio trilogy: Isivumelwano, IsivumelwanoEsisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Since the term trilogy is not a familiar concept in Zulu literary studies, this is an attempt to fill that void. This thesis provides some new insight into this concept, while also devising a practical method for the analysis of the radio trilogy. Chapter one outlines the aim of the study, scope of the study and the definition of some terms. This is followed by explaining the method of research and theories on radio serial dramas. There is also a discussion of the historical background in the development of Zulu radio serial drama and Ntuli's position and contribution to it. Finally, there is a review of previous research studies in Aincan Languages on radio drama. In chapter two plot structure of a radio trilogy is discussed. Theories of drama trilogy by trilogists like Hitchcock, Bakhtin, Asimov and Norris are discussed in detail. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the plot structures of Isivumelwano, Jsivumelwano Esisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Chapter three deals with the characterization of radio trilogy. It distinguishes between the actors and characters. Different methods of character portrayal are investigated. Chapter four deals with perspectives on the theme of the radio trilogy. Types of themes are dealt with. Chapter five discusses the dialogue in radio trilogy. It deals with the differences between a dialogue, duologue and monologue, and explains the functions fulfilled by dramatic utterances and dialogue. Lastly a nature of dialogue as a characteristic of the dramatic action is discussed. Chapter six concentrates on the style of radio trilogy. Elements and different types of styles are discussed. Kinds of images, figurative language, proverbs, idioms, biblical allusions and various influences are discussed in detail. Chapter seven concludes by summarizing the main finding ofthis study, and giving observations about the quality ofNtuli's contribution to radio drama trilogy. lt also explores some possibilities regarding future studies on Ntuli's radio trilogy. / African Languages / D. La structure sous-jacente dans la zone A~100, N~60 a été étudié intensivement et extensivement, principalement par décroissance β et spectroscopie γ suite à des réactions de fission. Autour de N~60, en ajoutant juste quelques neutrons, protons un changement de forme rapide des états fondamentaux se produit, allant de sphérique à bien déformé. La coexistence de forme observée dans les noyaux de Sr et Zr est supposée avoir lieu dans toute la région. Les mécanismes impliqués dans l'apparition de la déformation n'étaient pas clairement identifiés. L'interaction entre les orbitales de Nilsson montantes et descendante est évoqué comme l'une des principales raisons du changement de forme. Cependant, une identification claire des orbitales proton et neutron en jeu était nécessaire. A cet effet, l'étude des isotopes ⁹³′⁹⁵′⁹⁷′⁹⁹Rb riches en neutrons a été réalisé excitation Coulombienne au CERN (ISOLDE) en utilisant le post-accélérateur REX-ISOLDE et le dispositif Miniball. Les structures excitées encore inconnues des isotopes ⁹⁷′⁹⁹Rb ont été peuplées et observées. Les coïncidences de transitions γ des états de basse énergie ont été observées et leur corrélations ont permis la construction de schémas de niveaux. Les probabilités de transitions associées ont été extraites grâce code GOSIA. Les éléments de matrice de l'opérateur électromagnétique observées constituent de nouveaux apports afin d'effectuer de nouveaux calculs théoriques permettant de statuer sur les orbitales impliquées. La sensibilité des expériences de ce type peut être accrue en utilisant des faisceaux radioactifs d'ions dont le spin nucléaire est polarisé. La technique de polarisation des feuilles orientées (TFT) fut étudiée dans ce but au CERN. Un nouveau polariseur TFT et un dispositif β-NMR ont être créés et installés après REX-ISOLDE. La connaissance du processus de polarisation associé à la technique reste incomplète à ce jour et de plus amples études sont nécessaires. Des tests préliminaires prometteurs ont été effectués sur le noyau de ⁸Li afin de déterminer le potentiel du dispositif actuel.

The underlying structure in the region A~100, N~60 has been under intensive and extensive investigation, mainly by β-decay and γ-ray spectroscopy from fission processes. Around N~60, by adding just few neutrons, protons a rapid shape change occurs from spherical-like to well deformed g.s. shape. Shape coexistence has been observed in the Sr and Zr nuclei, and is expected to take place in the whole region. The mechanisms involved in the appearance of the deformation is not well understood. The interplay between down-sloping and up-sloping neutron Nilsson orbital is evoked as one of the main reasons for the sudden shape change. However, a clear identification of the active proton and neutron orbitals was still on-going. For that purpose, the neutron rich ⁹³′⁹⁵′⁹⁷′⁹⁹Rb isotopes have been studied by Coulomb excitation at CERN (ISOLDE) using the REX-ISOLDE post-accelerator and the MINIBALL setup. The completely unknown structures of ⁹⁷′⁹⁹Rb have been populated and observed. Prompt γ-ray coincidences of low-lying states have been observed and time correlated to build level schemes. The associated transition strengths have been extracted with the GOSIA code. The observed matrix elements of the electromagnetic operator constituted new inputs of further theoretical calculations giving new insight on the involved orbitals. The sensitivity of such experiment can be increased using nuclear spin polarized RIB. For that purpose the Tilted Foils Technique (TFT) of polarization has been investigated at CERN. A new TFT polarizer with a β-NMR setup have be created and installed after REX-ISOLDE. The uncomplete knowledge of the polarization process associated to the technique needs to be investigated. Numerical simulation of the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping airfoils

There is currently a great deal of interest within the aviation community in the design of small, slow-flying but manoeuvrable uninhabited vehicles for reconnaissance, surveillance, and search and rescue operations in urban environments. Inspired by observation of birds, insects, fish and cetaceans, flapping wings are being actively studied in the hope that they may provide greater propulsive efficiencies than propellers and rotors at low Reynolds numbers for such Micro-Air Vehicles (MAVs). Researchers have posited the Strouhal number (combining flapping frequency, amplitude and forward speed) as the parameter controlling flapping wing aerodynamics in cruising flight, although there is conflicting evidence. This thesis explores the effect of flapping frequency and amplitude on forces and wake structures, as well as physical mechanisms leading to optimum propulsive efficiency. Two-dimensional rigid airfoils are considered at Reynolds number 2,000 ??? 40,000. A compressible Navier-Stokes simulation is combined with numerical and analytical potential flow techniques to isolate and evaluate the effect of viscosity, leading and trailing edge vortex separation, and wake vortex dynamics. The wake structures of a plunging airfoil are shown to be sensitive to the flapping frequency independent of the Strouhal number. For a given frequency, the wake of the airfoil exhibits ???vortex lock-in??? as the amplitude of motion is increased, in a manner analogous to an oscillating circular cylinder. This is caused by interaction between the flapping frequency and the ???bluff-body??? vortex shedding frequency apparent even for streamlined airfoils at low Reynolds number. The thrust and propulsive efficiency of a plunging airfoil are also shown to be sensitive to the flapping frequency independent of Strouhal number. This dependence is the result of vortex shedding from the leading edge, and an interaction between the flapping frequency and the time for vortex formation, separation and convection over the airfoil surface. The observed propulsive efficiency peak for a pitching and plunging airfoil is shown to be the result of leading edge vortex shedding at low flapping frequencies (low Strouhal numbers), and high power requirements at large flapping amplitudes (high Strouhal numbers). The efficiency peak is governed by flapping frequency and amplitude separately, rather than the Strouhal number directly.
