One-act plays in Zulu

D.Litt. et Phil. / The following aspects are covered in this study: The historical development of Zulu drama. This development is divided into the following periods: Pre-colonial, Missionary and Post-Missionary; the period under discussion is the latter. Structuralism and Semiotics are applied to one-act plays. The Semiotic approach views drama as communication: every aspect of the dramatic space is viewed as a sign conveying meaning. Pfister's approach is also applied in this study. Research undertaken in African languages in South Africa on drama thus far is also examined so as to direct the present study toward a particular need. This is done in Chapter 1. In. Chapter 2 plot development and various types of plot in oneact plays are studied to ascertain which plot type is preferred by authors of one-act plays. Character is also studied in this chapter. In Chapter 3 theme is studied to determined whether it is open or closed. Dialogue is discussed in Chapter 4. Didascalies as a sign system and their significance and function are studied in Chapter 5. The final chapter, Chapter 6, is the evaluation of one-act plays in Zulu.

Imidlalo enkundlanye : a thematic exploration of one-act plays in Zulu

M.A. / Since 1983 there has been a revival in the publication of one-act plays in Zulu. The study attempts to examine a new aspect, namely theme, in one-act plays. In order to highlight the thematic shift in one-act plays, the themes in full-length plays are examined and a comparison is then made to see how the themes in one-act plays differ from these. The study is based on certain aspects of the theory of Semiotics and works with concepts proposed by Pfister (1988) namely: a) A-perspectival structure b) Open perspective structure c) Closed perspective structure There seems to be a change in what dramatists are focusing on in their plays. This change is discussed and it is established to what extent the shift has occurred.

A critical analysis of N.F. Mbhele's one-act plays.

This thesis investigates the appropriateness and the accuracy of Mbhele's artistry in writing his one-act plays from Izivunguvungu Zempilo, Ishashalazi and Ezemihla Nayizolo. It considers the formal literary elements which include characterisation, themes, setting, plot, dialogue and style of the writer inclusive of the language that has been used. It also involves different kinds of themes that are revealed by this dramatist in his work. His themes cover all the aspects of life. This includes the exploration of the previous political situation and its effect on the lives of the people, the effect of the Western influences on black South Africans and the people's perspectives on education and religion. The theoretical framework that has been used in this study is the historical-biographical approach. The interview with the author has been very helpful in this regard. The purpose of the interview has been to develop some kind of understanding of the author's own ideas, his early life experiences, his educational background, and the sense of the situation the author writes about. This study consists of six chapters; the first chapter serves as the general introduction for the whole thesis. The author's biographical notes, the identification and the discussion of the research methodology and the definition of some important terms, form part of chapter one. In each chapter, there is an explicit explanation of each formal literary element in relation to Mbhele's one-act plays. Chapter two deals with both characterisation and plot, because plot deals with all the events in a story and the way in which these events are connected. All the events in a story involve the characters. Chapter three investigates the themes that are found in Mbhele's one-act plays, and the ways in which they are revealed. Chapter four consists of the dialogue and style of the writer, which includes his use of the language and the form of address used by the characters to address each other. Chapter five discusses the social background of the characters in relation to what they do in the plays. This includes their given social circumstances, the time and the place which the writer has created for them. Chapter six is the general conclusion for the whole study. Performance in isiZulu radio drama is imaginative and abstract to the listeners and radio drama writers make use of semiotic signs to convey intended action or information to the listeners. This research is meant to uncover the role of semiotics in the isiZulu radio drama and the impact it has on the culture of the isiZulu-speaking community. This study was dedicated to answer the following research questions: • How does semiotics play its role in isiZulu radio drama? • To what extent does semiotics play its role in isiZulu radio drama? • What impact it has on the culture of isiZulu-speaking community? To answer these research questions the researcher formulated the following objectives: • To identify different semiotic signs that plays a significant role in isiZulu radio drama. • To explore the role of semiotic signs in isiZulu radio drama. • To analyse the role of semiotic signs in isiZulu radio drama. • To examine the extent to which semiotic signs can influence the revival of cultural knowledge in isiZulu-speaking community. • To suggest for further research on the role of semiotics in isiZulu radio drama and the impact it has on the culture of isiZulu-speaking community. The researcher used a mixed method consisting of quantitative and qualitative approaches which examined the research problem by surveying isiZulu radio drama listeners, observing selected isiZulu radio drama scripts and conducting a telephone interview with the participant. The researcher found that semiotics play significant and different roles in isiZulu radio dramas and has the potential to revive cultural knowledge of the isiZulu-speaking community. A study of D B Z Ntuli's radio trilogy : Isivumelwano, Isivumelwano Esisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano

This is a study ofD.RZ. Ntuli's radio trilogy: Isivumelwano, IsivumelwanoEsisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Since the term trilogy is not a familiar concept in Zulu literary studies, this is an attempt to fill that void. This thesis provides some new insight into this concept, while also devising a practical method for the analysis of the radio trilogy. Chapter one outlines the aim of the study, scope of the study and the definition of some terms. This is followed by explaining the method of research and theories on radio serial dramas. There is also a discussion of the historical background in the development of Zulu radio serial drama and Ntuli's position and contribution to it. Finally, there is a review of previous research studies in Aincan Languages on radio drama. In chapter two plot structure of a radio trilogy is discussed. Theories of drama trilogy by trilogists like Hitchcock, Bakhtin, Asimov and Norris are discussed in detail. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the plot structures of Isivumelwano, Jsivumelwano Esisha and Ngenxa Yesivumelwano. Chapter three deals with the characterization of radio trilogy. It distinguishes between the actors and characters. Different methods of character portrayal are investigated. Chapter four deals with perspectives on the theme of the radio trilogy. Types of themes are dealt with. Chapter five discusses the dialogue in radio trilogy. It deals with the differences between a dialogue, duologue and monologue, and explains the functions fulfilled by dramatic utterances and dialogue. Lastly a nature of dialogue as a characteristic of the dramatic action is discussed. Chapter six concentrates on the style of radio trilogy. Elements and different types of styles are discussed. Kinds of images, figurative language, proverbs, idioms, biblical allusions and various influences are discussed in detail. The primary aim of the research in these drama books is to see how much power and influence is in naming of the characters and how have they been named? The research also focuses on theories and ways that can be used in naming characters as well as the style the author used in his two drama books that would be analyzed. The researcher has chosen drama books from the author Lawrence Molefe to see whether is there anything new that can be learnt from him on how he has name his characters. This will go to as far as analyzing how the author has name his characters and how his style of naming does fit in Freytag’s pyramid (1863). This research is divided into six chapters. This research also focuses on acceptable ways and methods that are being followed and used when naming the characters or even children at large. Analysis focuses on the importance of giving a name to a human being. It is also known that this kind of research has some challenges that are usually experienced. Challenges such as relevant resources that can be used in assisting a research especially when research conducted in naming is written in isiZulu. It is well known that these kinds of resources are widely and abundantly available in other languages. There are many resources whether it is books, articles or journals on naming or onomastics in English available. This simply says that it is imperative for the researcher to go all out in finding important ways that would be used in conducting the research. This also gives a researcher an opportunity to look into the aims and objectives of the analysis. The researcher will also be mindful of whether the analysis will be based on the short term or long term period. This means that the researcher will have to take into consideration the aims and objectives of the research. It is imperative for the researcher to be mindful of the theory that will be used in analyzing naming or onomastics and also look at other theories of onomastics. This lies on the theme or lesson that will be found in naming or giving a name in a character. The analysis needs to focus on the theory that focuses on naming . The research analysis also focuses on what will be analyzed on naming the characters and what inspires the research to be conducted especially giving Zulu names. It is important to look at the resources that will be used when conducting the research on naming. Even though, at this stage the focus is on analyzing Zulu names, it is also vital to look at how different analysis is on naming specifically in other languages. The research analysis also looks at the biography of the author regarding drama books that he published. This allows readers to know more about the author and what inspired his love of writing. This go beyond on finding more about the author and what makes him different from other authors when analyzing his name giving his characters. When conducting research analysis, ways or methods of collecting data or information needs to be clearly explained. Again, it is outmost vital to read what other onomasticians or linguists say about how to analyze name giving or naming. The focus is also on analyzing two literary dramas where attention is given to the role that characters play in ensuring that the story is a success of course with the help of how they have been named. We look at the impact their names have in the drama by just being given names. x The researcher also gives a summary or an overview of story from each book so that the supervisor and co-supervisor have understood what the story is about so that they are able to see how characters have been named. This also allows the researcher to see whether is there any gap that needs to be closed when analyzing naming in isiZulu nor commend on the good work done. It also allows the researcher to look at how names of the characters have impacted on plot and the structure of the drama. Research analysis has also to focus on the naming style used by the author in his two drama books namely Izwe Lizothini and Bahlukumezekile Behlakaniphelana Nje and how does his style differ from other authors. At the end, the research summarizes the role and the impact of name giving and its analysis, what are recommendations on the gap identified during the research and how to close challenges identified.
