An Unreceptive Audience: The Mixed Receptions of Mark Twain's and J.D.Salinger's Novels in the 1950s and 1960s

Tovar, Marlene 02 November 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines how the sociopolitical contexts of the mid-twentieth century influenced readers’ interpretations of Mark Twain’s novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye,” two controversial novels that were subjected to censorship activity. In particular, this thesis will focus on the reception of both of these novels during the 1950s and 1960s, a period marked by two major events: The Civil Rights Movement and the youth counterculture phenomenon. In this study, the reception of “Huckleberry Finn” will be analyzed in the context of the civil rights movement, using news articles published in the 1950s and 1960s to illustrate how the different interpretations of readers prompted school board directors to ban the book from junior high and high school reading lists.

Inventores de asas, arquitetos de labirintos: Raduan Nassar, Guimarães Rosa e a Estética da Recepção / Inventors of wings, architects of labyrinths:Raduan Nassar, Guimarães Rosa and the aesthetic effect of reception

Alexandre de Amorim Oliveira 30 April 2009 (has links)
This work aims at analyzing Grande Sertão: Veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa and Lavoura Arcaica, by Raduan Nassar, two authors aware of their texts being open to different interpretations. The continuous presentations of new interpretations of their books are translated in the recreation of many different realities, as if one enters a labyrinth while it is being expanded. Mimesis occurs as a process of building of a labyrinth, and the directions of this labyrinth are unpredictable. This event can only be analyzed happen if the aesthetic effect of reception proposed by Hans Roberto Jauss is identified as an occurence. An understanding of the literary work connected to the aesthetic background of the reader, which can also be expanded through the interaction between the text and the reader. Thus, the labyrinth is also built by the reader, and interpretation becomes an eternal devenir through this interaction

The literary work of Carmen da Silva (1919-1985), a feminist writer from Rio Grande, reveals echoes of her reading of French feminist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir’s (1908-1986) work.

Jonsson, Sofia January 2009 (has links)

/
This essay examines why certain posts on weblogs get more comments compared to less commented posts. Skildringen av samtida asatro i svensk media : En innehållsanalys av hur samtida asatro representeras i digital nyhetsmedia / The Depiction of Modern Asatrú in Media : A content analysis of how modern Asatrú is represented in digital news media

Andersson, Rasmus January 2022 (has links)
This study focuses on how Asatrú movements in Sweden are depicted and discussed in digital news articles through two different lenses: How are these movements depicted and which aspects of these movements and their faith are brought up most frequently? The theoretical framework for the study consists of Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory, positive and negative Essentialism as well as Erving Goffman’s theory of Stigma. The method consists of a qualitative content analysis focusing on analyzing the ideas, ideologies and narratives presented in the studied articles, and the material consists of digital articles picked from various Swedish news publications such as Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Expressen, published between 2015 - 2021. The study shows that the discussion of these Asatrú movements is dominated by their perceived connections to racism and right wing extremist groups. On the other hand, the articles and their authors also make attempts to counterbalance this depiction by discussing aspects of the religion such as Blót, ritual sacrifices, as well as by interviewing members of these movements to show their thoughts and feelings about their religion.
