De la pampa al cielo : the development of tonality in the compositional language of Alberto Ginastera /Carballo, Erick. January 2006 (has links)
Thesis--Indiana University, 2006. / Computer printout. "While the present study will focus specifically on the evolution of tonality in Ginastera's compositional style, I begin by surveying the small body of general scholarship pertinent to Ginastera, starting with his own published comments. This critical survey serves two purposes: it provides a general overview of the scholarship to date regarding Ginastera; and it demonstrates the shortcomings of that scholarship in relation to the study of tonality's evolution in Ginastera's music--hence the rationale for the present study."--Leaves 1-2. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 269-284), abstract, and vita.

Från åkerbruk och fäboddrift : Den svenska vokala folkmusiken nu och då, har sångsättet förändrats? / From agriculture and old pastures : The Swedish vocal folk music now and before, has the manner in which it is sung changed?Ludvigson, Emma January 2009 (has links)
This is a paper discussing the way folksong singing has undergone changes from agricultural society to the present day. The aim of this paper is to discern if the way of singing folksongs has changed through the years. In addition, I want to investigate how folk songs have changed and what these changes depend on. I have interviewed five women, all working as folk singers, as well as studied literature and listened to archive recordings. The conclusion of this paper is that folk songs have changed over the years. A clear difference is that the older singers generally sang in a more unsentimental way compared to the singers today, who often attach great importance to interpreting the text and also using more ornaments. The reasons for these differences depend on many factors, e.g. the vocal folk music used to be functional music, whereas today’s music is much more exposed in the media, more institutionalised and professionalized. The singers of today are also inspired by other music cultures and styles.

Folk and western influences in Pancho Vladigerov's "Rhapsody Vardar"Smith, Cameron M. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents an in-depth discussion and analysis of the stylistic influences of Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov (1899-1978), and their presentation in his Rhapsody Vardar , Opus 16. Vladigerov's background includes studies in both his native Bulgarian folk music, as well as formal western training at two different music academies in Berlin. The first chapter provides relevant biographical information, and explores aspects of Vladigerov's compositions which derive from Western European traditions, including a discussion of the composers and styles that influenced his writing. This is done through discussion and analysis of his Three Pieces for Piano , Opus 15, a work written in the same year as his Rhapsody Vardar . Chapter two provides a general overview of Bulgarian folk music, especially during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chapter three brings together these observations in an analysis of Vladigerov's landmark piano work, Vardar Rhapsody .

Sångtradition i förändring / Singing Traditions in ChangeFunseth, Carin January 2012 (has links)
The study aims to identify and describe contemporary folk singers’ interpretation in the case of recording old songs from Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research. To learn more about the process of interpretation, I have compared songs from three archive recordings and four modern recordings of the same songs. By transcriptions and “soundstories” I have analyzed the factors of change which has appeared in the process. The study is based on theories about “silent knowledge”, culture heritage and tradition. The result shows that factors like the attitude towards pulse, embellishments and melody variations and the use of the voice and instruments are changed in the modern recordings. Elements like text and structure are unchanged. An overall tendency in the result is that the contemporary singers have a more nuanced manner of performing the songs than what is exposed of the traditional singers, most evident in the use of instruments and in the attitude towards pulse.

Vattenringar : En individstudie i folkmusikvågens efterdyningar / Water rings : A study of two Swedish folk musicians after the time of the folk music vogueLies, Mattias January 2007 (has links)
This essay is about two Swedish folk musicians, Anders Rosén and Leif Stinnerbom, who have been playing two important rolls in the developing process of Swedish folk music, on their separate ways. The main part of this work is focused on the era called “The Folk Music Vogue”, which was the era when my informants were in the limelight on the Swedish fiddler scene of the 70s. Our music culture is constantly lying under the change of progress and I find it interesting to reflect how these kinds of changes are affecting the role of the musician. In this essay I am reflecting on the different perspectives of the musicianship according to my informants and how they both are referring to their role as musicians. The purpose is further on to see how they have been relating to the change of progress on the field of the Swedish folk music during the 70s and up to this date. Throughout interviews with the informants I am analyzing their personal relationship to their life as folk musicians. I am focusing on their personal relationship to the Swedish folk music climate of today, as well as to the Folk Music Vogue of the 70s. The essay also focuses on the interpretation of traditional folk tunes, which leads us further on into the folk music tradition itself. During the 70s there was a young generation of fiddlers, which my informants was a strong part of, who was questioning the old values of the traditional folk music. With new kinds of perspectives and with different values this young generation changed the values in the tradition and through this, the folk musical climate became more open minded than before. One of my main conclusions in this essay is that my informants have been changing their relationship to the style of folk music as well as to the field of folk music. They have been changing their point of view, and these changes is mainly a result of the developments that have occurred in the style and on the field of folk music, after the era of the Folk Music Vogue, and further on up to this very date. These changes have also been affecting their personal relationship to their own musicianship. The history chapter of this essay will give the reader relevant information about the Swedish folk music history. Throughout the history the reader will get a bigger picture of the circumstances before and meanwhile the time of the Folk Music Vogue. The answers of my informants are compared to this history but firstly I have been comparing them with each other, and thereby answer the main questions of this essay.

David Guion's vision for a musical AmericanaCamann, Mark David 27 January 2011 (has links)
American composer David Guion (1892-1981) created and expressed in much of his music a unique and unmistakably American voice. Though he is remembered today mostly for piano pieces, especially Turkey in the Straw and Arkansas Traveler, he was famous for championing cowboy songs, African-American spirituals and folk songs as the truly authentic representations of the American experience. He also wrote many original works, including a substantial number of songs in Black dialect. In 1930 Guion starred in a cowboy show at the Roxy Theatre in New York, drawing upon his western-themed music. The next year he had a weekly radio show, broadcast around the country and featuring his music exclusively, with the title Hearing America with Guion. He played a substantial role in transforming Home on the Range into the best-known of all cowboy songs. His magnum opus, the ballet Shingandi, was highly regarded but has yet to be recorded.
This dissertation examines those genres among Guion’s compositions that reveal his vision for a musical Americana. Much of his music is based on songs that circulated first in oral tradition before he adapted them for the concert stage. This dissertation surveys the breadth of the oral tradition of these songs, identifies his direct sources, and examines his treatment of melody, rhythm and harmony as he infused his music with such characteristic national flavor that his audiences were, in effect, “Hearing America.”
A complete list of Guion compositions is attempted, and to the extent possible, probable dates of composition are established from recital programs and publication agreements. The scripts of his radio shows are reconstructed from papers in his archives and presented here. / text
