This master's research aimed at the designing of corpus-based activities in English, focusing on the development of the oral comprehension for students at levels A2 and B1. To that end, Corpus linguistics was used as a theoretical-methodological apparatus, and the activities were applied in a mini-course of 12 hours taught at a higher education institution in the northwest of the state of São Paulo. The participating students were in the last year of their undergraduate studies and upon finishing the course they have the opportunity to apply for the international proficiency exam TOEFL. The need for this research came after the mapping of Brazilian students’ level of English revealed an insufficient proficiency to follow academic activities in universities abroad (ABREU LIMA, MORAES FILHO, 2016). As a research methodology, we used the Antconc® program as a tool to perform lexical analyzes and descriptions. The corpus of study for this research was compiled from the transcripts of 71 lectures taken from the TED website (www.ted.com) and 56 transcripts of the TED-ED website animations (https://ed.ted.com/). From the data obtained through the analysis of the corpus of study, activities focused on listening comprehension in English were proposed and then applied to students. As a theoretical basis, we followed the concepts of English for Academic Purposes (FLOWERDEW, 2001, CHARLES, 2013, HYLAND, 2006), Corpus Linguistics (CHARLES, 2012, MCENERY, XIAO, 2011, BERBER SARDINHA, 2010); and conceptions about Oral Comprehension (ROST, 2011; FLOWERDEW, MILLER, 2005; GOH 2003, 2012; MCCARTHY, 1998). The results obtained in this research are intended to improve the lexical knowledge of the students in English. We also hope that this study may highlight the importance of Corpus Linguistics for language teaching and learning, as well as the relevance of corpus-based materials.

This research study aimed at investigating the foreign language teacher‟s pre-service education in a teletandem‟s laboratory context. Specifically, it focuses on four aspects in the foreign language teacher‟s pre-service education: counseling, mediation, reflection and learning in teletandem. This study discusses, through a new technological resource, the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro, the counseling, mediation and the reflection by the pre-service students from a state university in São Paulo state, inside a teletandem laboratory. In this laboratory, the undergraduate foreigner teachers, called at this study of counselor-students, provide theoretical and technological counseling sessions to the freshman students in the thematic project named Teletandem Brasil: língua estrangeira para todos, in other words, for those students who have not started their foreign language learning in teletandem process yet. Therefore, this research is basically constituted by three stages: i) observation of the face to face counseling sessions given by the counselor-students in the laboratory; ii) reading, reflection and analysis of the reflective diaries of the counselor-students about these face to face counseling sessions and iii) realization of the online mediation sessions with the counselor-students through the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro. The interest to achieve this research arose by the needs and concerns within my experience as an undergraduate foreign language teacher, in other words, as a teacher in a pre-service education lacking more counseling and reflection of the nature that this new context of teaching and learning languages in-tandem can provide. Thus, the study aimed to investigate what are the possible impacts of the counseling sessions‟ experience, given by the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

SPU a cizí jazyky na nižším sekundárním stupni škol / Learning Difficulties and Foreign Language Teaching - Lower Secondary SchoolsHrychová, Helena January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on foreign language teaching to children with specific learning difficulties (LD) at Czech lower secondary schools. It aims to define learning difficulties and describe their causes and manifestations in developing individual foreign language skills and sub-skills. Moreover, the work with these children in the school environment is mentioned and the Czech system of educating them is compared to the French one. The practical part surveys the opinions of foreign language teachers on this subject and analyses the techniques they use with these pupils. Special attention is paid to the differences in the approach of teachers at schools with classes specialized in the tuition of children with LD, schools with extensive language teaching and schools with no specialization. The results indicate that the majority of teachers agree with the integration of pupils with LD into mainstream schools and they favour their exemption from second foreign language study. The individual types of schools differ mainly in the approach towards the presentation of new grammar, in the types of exercises used for the development of communication skills and in the forms of testing and evaluation. Only negligible variations were discovered in other areas of research. KEYWORDS specific learning...

This PhD dissertation aimed at examining stimulating aspects of painting in thedevelopment of the speaking skill in French as a foreign language. Following the assumed thesis, the author believes that a personalized contact with works of art activates in learners deposits of creativity and imagination, making them conducive to expressing their thoughts and beliefs in an authentic and spontaneous way, and in a broader perspective – personally. The theoretical part of the dissertation explores educational values of painting in its impact on creativity and imagination. It also discusses the role of personal communicative intention, analyzed from the perspective of speaking and communication. The final remarks in this part focus on the practical applications of works of art in the classroom and on a critical analysis of various techniques which resort to paintings. The empirical part of the dissertation documents a comprehensive action research carried out among a group of Polish students studying French philology. A research project designed by the author in the form of creativity training refers to paintings, and is supposed to foster students’ autonomy and authenticity in thinking and self-expression. The study provided an extensive collection of data, which have been analyzed for their applicability in the classroom.Concluding, both the theoretical considerations and the empirical research seem to justify the thesis that tasks based on interpreting paintings not only stimulate the development of students’ personal communicative competence, but also support their creativity.
