Teaching the Writing Process through Digital Storytelling in Pre-service EducationGreen, Martha Robison 2011 May 1900 (has links)
This study used a mixed-methods design to determine instructional strategies that best enhance pre-service teachers’ valuing of digital storytelling as a method to teach the narrative writing process; to consider how digital storytelling increases pre-service teachers’ valuing of the role of reflection in the writing process; and to explore how pre-service teachers’ become more aware of the relationship between words and images to convey meaning. The study also considered aspects of the project that result in pre-service teachers valuing digital storytelling to teach the writing process and investigated how engaging in a digital storytelling project helps pre-service teachers better understand the connection between the planning process in the text-based environment and the planning process in the digital environment.
Results indicated that constructing digital stories in a supportive learning environment led pre-service teachers to be more aware of the role that reflection plays in writing process and to value digital storytelling as an effective method to teaching writing and integrate digital technology in the classroom. Participating in the project increased pre-service teachers’ understanding of the connection between the planning process in the text-based environment and the planning process in the digital environment. Use of a storyboard served as a reflective planning tool that enabled pre-service teacher to better understand the connection between words and images to convey meaning and extended the planning process into the digital environment. Pre-service teachers valued the digital storytelling project as a model for teaching the writing process in the digital environment, as a method for self expression and for sharing stories within a community of learners, and as a strategy for integrating digital technology in the classroom.

The role of self-efficacy enhancement during pre-service teacher development : building resilience to prevent burn-outLanga, Siphiwe Angelica January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of self-efficacy enhancement in building pre-service teacher resilience to prevent symptoms of burn-out in Swaziland; how engaging in reflective practices can act as a protective factor. Not much research focuses on pre-service teacher burn-out and how to mitigate its effects, and this creates a gap that this study sought to address. Through the interpretivist perspective, and employing participatory action research (PAR) and some elements of pre-test, post test design, seven pre-service teachers who were doing their final year of a three year teacher’s diploma programme; four males and three females were engaged in the study. Data were collected by using the resilience scale questionnaire, participants’ reflective journals, researcher’s diary and transcribed recordings from a focus group interview. Three themes emerged; (1) that pre-service teachers in Swaziland do experience symptoms of burn-out during teaching practice. Seven risk factors that contribute to the experience of burn-out were cited by participants; learners’ behavioural issues, heavy workloads, demanding supervisors, lack of support from colleagues, teaching learners who are high achievers, feelings of inadequacy and lack of prioritising. (2) Pre-service teachers were able to draw strength and possibly avert burn-out by mobilising external and internal protective sources. (3) Reflective practices proved to be a viable intervention that enhanced pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy and helped promote resilient coping. Future research might look into other factors that predispose pre-service teachers to stress and how reflective practices may be infused in the curriculum for pre-service education. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Humanities Education / MEd / Unrestricted

The Decline of Science in the Early Years: A Diagnosis and a Plan of ActionBentley, Jennifer 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Science instruction in the early years of a student’s education career is essential to a student successfully continuing science in their secondary and postsecondary careers. However, the amount of high-quality science instruction students receive at the elementary level has been steadily declining for two decades, resulting in an inequitable imbalance in those who pursue STEM careers, a lack of critical science literacy in the U.S. populace, and a shortage of qualified employees entering the U.S. economy. Much of the lack of science instruction can be traced to decreased training of teachers to teach science during elementary credentialing programs or the complete absence of said training. This qualitative study sought to understand, through multiple-case study analysis, what makes one university “successful” at teaching science methods to their pre-service teachers and what makes another “unsuccessful.” Through interviews, observations, and an online document review, the author found that pre-service teachers entering the elementary school classroom need to feel they have the content knowledge necessary to teach science, feel they can overcome and work within barriers to high-quality science instruction in the K-12 system, and feel ready and prepared to teach science by their chosen Teacher Preparation Program.

A prática reflexiva na formação inicial do professor de inglêsSilva, Paulo Roberto Boa Sorte 15 March 2010 (has links)
This research investigates the contributions of the reflective teaching to pre-service English teacher education and it is justified by the need of discussing the perspectives to language teaching education in Brazil. From both qualitative
analytical-descriptive and analytical-interpretative methods, it aims at identifying the kind of reflection made by three pre-service English teachers during their experience on internship. It seeks to check if the reflections move theoretical references and if there can be changes in teachers‟ behavior when it comes to their teaching practice through reflection. The theoretical references used are Pimenta & Lima (2002)
concerning teachers‟ internship; Huberman (1995) and Hughes (1996) concerning the profile of beginning teachers; Dewey (1933), Schön (1982), Perrenoud (2002), Liston & Zeichner (1996) and Alarcão (2003) concerning the definition for reflective teacher.

Specifically, it focuses on four aspects in the foreign language teacher‟s pre-service education: counseling, mediation, reflection and learning in teletandem. This study discusses, through a new technological resource, the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro, the counseling, mediation and the reflection by the pre-service students from a state university in São Paulo state, inside a teletandem laboratory. In this laboratory, the undergraduate foreigner teachers, called at this study of counselor-students, provide theoretical and technological counseling sessions to the freshman students in the thematic project named Teletandem Brasil: língua estrangeira para todos, in other words, for those students who have not started their foreign language learning in teletandem process yet. Therefore, this research is basically constituted by three stages: i) observation of the face to face counseling sessions given by the counselor-students in the laboratory; ii) reading, reflection and analysis of the reflective diaries of the counselor-students about these face to face counseling sessions and iii) realization of the online mediation sessions with the counselor-students through the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro. The interest to achieve this research arose by the needs and concerns within my experience as an undergraduate foreign language teacher, in other words, as a teacher in a pre-service education lacking more counseling and reflection of the nature that this new context of teaching and learning languages in-tandem can provide. Thus, the study aimed to investigate what are the possible impacts of the counseling sessions‟ experience, given by the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Previous issue date: 2006-05-19 / This dissertation aims at investigating the use of monographs as a tool for critical reflection. The theoretical framework has its focus on the critical reflection moves, description, informing, confronting and reconstruction, proposed by Smyth (1992) based on Freire (1970). It was also discussed the use of monographs as tools for reflection and the Theory of Discourse Functioning (Bronckart, 1997), as a basis for the understanding of the linguistic materiality of the monographs. This research was carried out in a private university of São Paulo and the two monographs studied were developed by two groups of undergraduate students of languages attending the last term. We analyzed if the four critical reflection moves proposed by Smyth (1992) based on Freire (1970) were shown on the monograph developed by the students. The data analysis and interpretation suggest that the critical reflection actions appeared throughout the monographs, although, the action of confronting appears very little. It was also observed that the pre-service teachers were able to reconstruct their actions, although they did not refer to any theoretical basis to support their arguments.

Inset towards educational transformation with reference to primary schools in the Northern ProvinceRavhudzulo, Anniekie Nndowiseni 05 1900 (has links)
Like so many aspects of South African society, teacher education is undergoing
change. The researcher studied existing school-based in-service education and
training (SBINSET) programmes in the Northern Province and to improve the
programmes, proposes Continuous Self-Renewal School-Based INSET (CSR
SB INSET).
Based on the extensive literature survey, strategies that would improve effective
educational transformation are identified. Different concepts of INSET are
explained. Components of teacher education are examined as are those factors
that influence educational transformation. Advantages and limitations are
identified and guidance on how to overcome these are suggested.
The aim of this study was to examine INSET towards educational transformation
with reference to primary schools in the Northern Province in order to introduce
and assess a CSR SBINSET. The study examines the existing SBINSET
programmes which are run in the Northern Province. The importance of teachers'
continued professional growth is emphasised throughout this study. The
researcher views systematic in-service training programmes for teachers as an
educational necessity for the continuing professional growth of primary school
teachers.
An empirical survey has been undertaken to ascertain the effectiveness of CSR
SBINSET and the type of delivery strategy that may be implemented. The research
considers particular aspects of classroom practice addressed in the programme.
The research was guided by the following questions:
+ Which methods do teachers use in their subject teaching?
+ What are their approaches to learners and learning?
+ How do teachers reflect on their teaching?
+ What strategies do teachers use?
This research aims to improve existing SBINSET programmes run in the Northern
Province inter alia by observing practising teachers. CSR SBINSET attempts to
improve the competencies teachers, lecturers and District Officials, through such
means as the presentation of centre-based, school-based and cluster-based
workshops. Although the educational authorities should take initiative to provide
educational transformation, the following share responsibility in this vital aspect
of education:
+ those in the Department of Education who are responsible for planning;
+ superintendents of education within districts and regions;
+ training institutions such as universities, technikons, colleges and private
agencies.
The importance of and necessity for, continuous professional development of
primary school teachers by means of SBINSET programmes, is emphasised. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Didactics)

Technology education and curriculum 2005 : staff development through INSETMaluleka, Jan Khazamula 08 1900 (has links)
Curriculum 2005 together with its learning areas has been introduced in South Africa in
1998. All learning areas, except Technology Learning Area, are not new. Technology is
growing so rapidly that it gives so many challenges to people. These challenges include
making technology part of our curriculum, formulating and adapting technological solutions
to problems people may experience. We have to ask ourselves what technology or
Technology Education means. Therefore, this study provides the meaning and the rationale
for Technology Education in our curriculum. This study also attempts to shed light on the
form of training educators should attend for Technology Education.
Although there are different methods of training, for example PRESET and INSET, this
study concentrates on various forms of INSET. INSET is chosen because it is a means
through which the present need for Technology Education educators can be solved. The
percentage of educators involved in part-time study will increase in relation to the number in
full-time education. The closing down of some of colleges of education in South Africa
reduces the use of PRESET and increases INSET as a means of educator training. The
advantages of using INSET instead of PRESET are provided in this study.
The National Teacher Audit of 1995 has shown that the quality of INSET in South Africa is
poor. In addition, it seems the present ad hoc way of running INSET will not cope with
challenges of training educators for Curriculum 2005 and Technology Education. Normally,
INSET is the prime strategy for addressing problems in PRESET. Unfortunately, INSET has
to train educators for Technology Education (Technology Learning Area) which was never
touched by PRESET before. For this reason, this study provides an INSET model, guidelines
and recommendations to make the suggested model of INSET work successfully. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)
