TWO ESSAYS ON SERVICE ROBOTS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON HOTEL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCEHu, Xingbao (Simon) January 2020 (has links)
Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are revolutionizing the traditional paradigm of business operations and transforming consumers’ experiences by promoting human–robot interaction in tourism and hospitality. Nonetheless, research related to customers’ experiences with robot-related services in this industry remains scant. This study thus seeks to investigate hotel customers’ experiences with service robots and how robot-based experiences shape customers’ satisfaction with hotel stays. Specifically, three research questions are addressed: (a) What are hotel customers’ primary concerns about robots and robot-related services? (b) Do hotel customers’ experiences with robotic services shape guests’ overall satisfaction? (c) How do service robots’ attributes affect guests’ forgiveness of robots’ service failure?
This dissertation consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the overall research background. Chapter 2 answers the first two research questions by combining text mining and regression analyses; Chapter 3 addresses the third question by introducing social cognition into this investigation and performing an experiment. Overall, sentiment analyses uncovered customers’ generally positive experiences with robot services. Machine learning via latent Dirichlet allocation modeling revealed three key topics underlying hotel guests’ robot-related reviews—robots’ room delivery services, entertainment and catering services, and front office services. Regression analyses demonstrated that hotel robots’ attributes (e.g., mechanical vs. AI-assistant robots) and robot reviews’ characteristics (e.g., sentiment scores) can influence customers’ overall satisfaction with hotels. Finally, the experimental study verified uncanny valley theory and the existence of social cognition related to service robots (i.e., warmth and competence) by pointing out the interactive effects of robots’ anthropomorphism in terms of their facial expressions, voices, and physical appearance. These findings collectively yield a set of theoretical implications for researchers along with practical implications for hotels and robot developers. / Tourism and Sport

Driven by guilt : A psychoanalytical study of Shouya Ishida, from Koe no KatachiLavén, Simon January 2024 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to make a psychological analysis of the protagonist, Shouya Ishida, in director Naoko Yamada’s movie Koe no Katachi. 12-year-old Ishida bullies a deaf transfer student because he does not know how to communicate with her. At some point this goes too far, resulting in her transferring out again, leaving Ishida as the target of the bullying from his classmates. The now 17-year-old Ishida, remorseful and depressed, plans to take his own life. But after an encounter with the girl whom he once bullied, he has a change of heart and instead tries to repent for his actions. I studied how the bullying first began and how the effects of it impacted Ishida’s life later on. I also analysed his guilt, shame and uses of defence mechanisms. Finally, I investigated the act of forgiving oneself. This thesis concludes that defence mechanisms heavily influence Ishida’s actions, both as a child and as a teen. Additionally, how his guilt and shame play a large role in damaging his ability to form new relationships and forgive himself for his past actions.

Moral Injury Development and Repair in Service Members and Veterans: The Roles of Self-Forgiveness, Perceived Social Support, and Causal AttributionsCoomes, Steven P. 08 1900 (has links)
Moral injury (MI) among military personnel is a harmful condition caused by perpetrating, failing to prevent, or witnessing atrocities that violate one's deeply held morals or values. The current study built on the existing literature by exploring predictors of MI, specifically trait self-forgiveness (TSF), state self-forgiveness (SSF), perceived social support (PSS), and causal attributions (CA) following potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) in service members and veterans. Participants were 92 U.S. military service members and veterans. The main findings were that TSF and PSS were both significantly negatively associated with MI in bivariate and multivariate analyses. Further, TSF and PSS were examined as potential moderators of the relationship between PMIEs and MI, but these moderation analyses were not significant. Given that some studies provide evidence for different symptom profiles between categories of PMIEs (i.e., PMIE-Self, PMIE-Other, and PMIE-Betrayal), the relationship between the different categories and TSF were explored. Of the three PMIE types, only PMIE-Betrayal was a significant negative predictor of TSF. Finally, CA was explored as a potential mediator of the relationship between TSF and MI outcomes, but this mediation analysis was not significant. Limitations, directions for future research, and implications for clinical practice are included for discussion.

Überbrückung der Kluft zwischen normativer Ethik und dem Grundprinzip der Gnade mit Bezugnahme auf Scheidung und Wiederheirat innerhalb der christlichen Kirchen und Gemeinschaften / Bridging the gap between normative ethics and the concept of grace with special reference to the question of divorce and remarriage within Christian churches and communitiesBinder-Wüstiner, Beatrice, 1958- 05 1900 (has links)
abgeleitet. / The present thesis bridges the gap between the normative-ethical standard of lifelong marriage
on the one hand and God’s grace for men‘s failures on the other hand. Considering the practices
of churches and communities with regard to divorce and remarriage, this gap is demonstrated.
It is found that the associated tension is eliminated by an unilateral choice of either the
normative aspect or the principle of grace. The basis for the discussion is provided by the relevant
understanding of marriage and the determination of the relationship between theological
ethics and grace as the principle of God's action towards mankind. Therefore, this thesis investigates
the evolution of the theological understanding of marriage during history and the different
understandings of norms and grace in the Catholic Church, the Protestant Church and the
Evangelical Free Communities with regard to their handling of divorce and remarriage. Considering
the resulting similarities and differences, I propose – building on the fact of God’s forgiveness
– how to bridge the gap between normative ethics and the concept of grace without
eliminating the obvious tension. Finally, possible consequences for how to handle divorce and
remarriage by churches and communities are drawn. / Philosophy & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Theological Ethics)

Deconstruction of the UN Discourse on Transitional Justice : An Understanding of Justice and Reconciliation through Derrida’s ConceptsLebedeva, Alexandra January 2016 (has links)
The present thesis seeks to problematize the UN discourse within transitional justice. Many scholars have pointed out that the discourse has been normalised and that is why it is in need for deconstruction. The study aims to critically analyse how justice and reconciliation are understood in the field. For the purpose of the study Derrida’s concepts on justice and forgiveness have been chosen as theoretical frameworks. The method of study is a deconstructive analysis, based on Derrida’s notion of deconstruction. The method implies analysis of language of the research material, i.e. four UN reports regarding transitional justice from 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The study has shown, firstly, that the rule of law concept is closely connected with the idea of justice and, secondly, justice is often reduced to accountability. That in turn explains the dominance of the juridical instruments in transitional justice processes. Apart from this, based on Derrida’s concept of forgiveness, reconciliation and mechanisms applied represent a conditional forgiveness, seeking to re-establish normality. Another problem is that reconciliation is not sufficiently approached in the reports. Nevertheless, the history of the transitional justice development has shown that there is a potential for further changes and that is why it necessary to continue question the established norms. Finally, deconstruction analysis has proved to be an adequate method for analysing transitional justice discourses and contributed to a nuanced analysis. The use of two languages, English and Russian versions of the reports allowed to identify and visualise some conceptual constructions that could otherwise have been missing.

Contribution à l'étude des politiques de la mémoire dans la construction de l'Etat en Afrique / Contribution to the study of memory politics in the construction of State in AfricaMassamba Makoumbou, Jean-Serge 21 June 2010 (has links)
Building peace following a conflict reveals the importance of the role of the memory as witnessed by the increased importance of the memory policies witch are responsible of conflicts and the change of political regimes. This undertaking remains subject to the knowledge, or lack of it, of the serious violations of the rights of man, and the material and symbolic redress for victims seeking recognition as well as the rewriting of history with the aim of changing stereotypes at the origin of conflicts within a particular community.Given the absence of an independent judicial system and a third party State, the memory policies initiated in the resolution of Congolese conflicts tend towards legitimizing an authoritarian political regime rather than promoting reconciliation. The constitutionalizing of peace, the limited accusation of war criminals and the deficit of “congolité” reveals the inadequacy of these policies, and the continuance of the international pardon policies. In light of this, the edification of a positive peace that differs from a simple cessation of the hostilities requires the establishment of a correlation between forgiveness and justice in a quest for accountability. This approach calls for a fresh attitude capable of favouring the transformation of the negative behaviours into rational positions with the aim of forgetting past outrages in order to work toward promoting a new innovative communal life. If the establishment of the future resolution mechanisms appear to be a major factor, any withdrawal from a crisis remains partial when not associated with a process of reconciliation.

The Effects of Self-Forgiveness, Self-Acceptance, and Self-Compassion on Subclinical Disordered Eating: The Role of ShameWomack, Stephanie Dianne 08 1900 (has links)
Disordered eating is a general term that describes a wide range of behaviors from diagnosable eating disorders to subclinical patterns of behavior that do not meet criteria for diagnosis (e.g., problematic weight loss behaviors, excessive dieting, bingeing, purging). Disordered eating is prevalent and has a wide range of physical and psychological consequences. Negative self-conscious emotions such as shame and guilt have been implicated in the development and maintenance of disordered eating. Positive attitudes toward the self (i.e., self-forgiveness, self-compassion, self-acceptance) may be helpful in reducing shame, guilt, and disordered eating symptoms. In this dissertation, I explored the associations between positive attitudes toward the self, negative self-conscious emotions, and disordered eating in a sample of college students and adults (N = 477). Positive attitudes toward the self were associated with lower levels of disordered eating symptoms, and this relationship was partially mediated by lower levels of negative self-conscious emotions. I concluded by discussing areas for future research and implications for clinical practice.
