Pedagogical affordances, challenges & limitations of the iPad as it is used in the Foundations Program of the Fujairah Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab EmiratesAli, Barraq Hassoun January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the integration of the iPad as a learning and teaching technology into the Foundations Program at the two Higher Colleges of Technology in Fujairah: Fujairah Men’s College (FMC) and Fujairah Women’s College (FWC) in the United Arab Emirates. The new technology was introduced to enable the Program’s teachers and students to support their teaching and learning of English as a foreign language. Specifically, the study investigates how these teachers and students used the iPad’s technical affordances to create pedagogical affordances designed to construct and promote English language teaching and learning. It also examines the challenges they faced in doing so, the types of tasks and activities for which the new technology was used. Finally, it sheds light on the limitations of the iPad as perceived by these users as well as other relevant issues arising from the launch of the technology in the two colleges. The data for the research were drawn from class observations, interviews and surveys. Six Foundations Program classes were observed, five teachers were interviewed, five more teachers were asked one written research question, and ten students were asked another written research question. In addition, two surveys – one for the teachers and one for the students – were conducted to obtain further data. The study finds that the Foundations Program’s teachers and students used the iPad’s technical affordances effectively to construct activities that largely enhanced their teaching and learning by making it more interesting, and engaging. In doing so, they faced challenges that they tried to resolve and which had some impact on their teaching and learning. In addition, the study has identified a number of issues relating to the use of the iPad in the Program as well as what these iPad users perceived as limitations of the new technology. Finally, the study stresses the importance of conducting a pilot scheme prior to any proposed rollout of a new educational technology and suggests longitudinal studies with larger and more representative samples to assess and measure any contributions or lack thereof the iPad makes to the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language. I believe that the study contributes to the area of TESOL and mobile learning by its focus on the rich experience of two higher education colleges using the iPad as a teaching and learning technology in classes of Arab learners and by highlighting the challenges the teachers and students at these two colleges faced in their attempt to integrate the new technology in their context as well as what they perceived as the technology’s pedagogical and technical limitations. Another important contribution of the study is the exploration of other issues arising from the use of the iPad in the Fujairah colleges’ teaching and learning environment. It is also important to note that study findings could provide insights into the integration of the iPad into the foundations programs of the other fifteen colleges in the Higher Colleges of Technology system given the similarities these colleges share with the two Fujairah colleges. Neither would it be an exaggeration to suggest that these findings could also provide an insight into the experience of using the iPad in similar learning environments in other UAE educational institutions.

[en] DESIGN PARAMETER FOR EVALUATION OF PILE FOUNDATION / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE PARÂMETROS GEOTÉCNICOS PARA PROJETOS DA CAPACIDADE DE SUPORTE DE ESTACAS ATRAVÉS DE ENSAIOS IN SITUPAULA CECILIA BORGA 19 October 2001 (has links)
materiais granulares e materiais argilosos. Outro elemento
[en] The main objective of this thesis is to discuss the
applicability of in-situ tests like the Standard
Penetration Test (SPT) and the Cone Penetration Test (CPT)
to determine directly the design parameters to predict the
bearing capacity of pile foundations. In case it will be
considered the use of empirical correlation to indicate the
mechanical properties of the soil in terms of shear
resistance, and the application of these values directly in
the classic formulation based on the theory of equilibrium
limit to evaluate distinctly the shaft and the base
resistance of piles. Adaptations of these values will be
proceeded considering aspects related with the non-linear
behavior of the soil; the mechanism of load transfer and
the influence of the constructive aspects. The results
obtained through this new methodology will be compared with
experimental results, obtained from static and dynamic load
tests and also with other empiric procedures that use the
results obtained from in-situ tests to evaluate directly the
bearing capacity of deep foundations.

Post-tensioned ribbed mat foundations on highly expansive soilsBurgoon, Justin Eugene January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science / Darren D. Reynolds / Highly expansive soils can severely damage the foundations which they support. These
damages create unnecessary maintenance cost to the owner and can be detrimental to the
building superstructure. Post-tensioned ribbed mat foundations are commonly used in light
commercial construction in areas in the United States that have highly expansive soils. Mild reinforced
ribbed mat foundations are rarely used in these areas. This report investigates why
post-tensioned ribbed mat foundations are more common in these areas than mild-reinforced
ribbed mat foundations. The approach to this investigation is a design example which designs
and compares the two foundation types. The design example is a typical 2-story office building
located in Dallas, Texas, which is an area that has highly expansive soils. First, a post-tensioned
ribbed mat foundation is designed for the office building. Next, a mild-reinforced ribbed mat
foundation is designed for the same building. A comparison is done between the two
foundations based on serviceability, strength requirements and construction costs. The findings
in the comparison is that post-tensioning is a more economical and constructible method. Using
mild-reinforcement requires the use of shear reinforcement in the ribs which is not typical in
foundation design and construction and is less economical, and additional reinforcement in the
slab is needed to resist bending stresses which is also less economical. The finding of the report
is that of the two foundation types, the post-tensioned ribbed mat foundation is the better design
based on the three areas of interest listed above. The use of a mild-reinforced mat foundation
would require construction procedures that are not typical and would be less economical.

A Computation of Partial Isomorphism Rank on Ordinal StructuresBryant, Ross 08 1900 (has links)
We compute the partial isomorphism rank, in the sense Scott and Karp, of a pair of ordinal structures using an Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse game. A complete formula is proven by induction given any two arbitrary ordinals written in Cantor normal form.

Provas de carga dinâmica em estacas escavadas de pequeno diâmetro com ponta modificada / Dynamic load tests on small diameter auger piles with modified tipBranco, Carlos José Marques da Costa 17 July 2006 (has links)
Auger pile foundations have been widely employed for light to medium loads. As the executive process cant avoid the degradation of the bottom excavation in situ soil properties, the only reliable resistance is a lateral friction parcel. However, these tip piles, many times, reaches relatively resistant strata and cant take advantage from these strata qualities. The present paper seems study the performance of this kind of piles in typical geotechnical profile of Londrina, by dynamic load tests on 16 piles with diameter equal 0,25 m and length of 12 m, when three traditional piles and on thirteen kinds with tip modification. Were made, also, static load tests on three traditional piles, tip investigation on all piles and soil resistance parameters determination. The results shaw that all modifications researched was able to use the nominal structural load of piles and that the more efficient of them was the soil improvement by soil stabilizer addition.
