Non-equilibrium transport in quantum hall edge states

This thesis deals with the study of transport properties of integer and fractional QH edge states and it is based on the work I performed during my Ph.D. studies. The focus of this thesis is on Luttinger liquids far from equilibrium and their relaxation dynamics. Since Boltzmann, a fundamental aspect of statistical mechanics has been the understanding of the emergence of an equilibrium state. Interactions play a crucial role in the thermalization process that drives a system through states described by the Gibbs equilibrium ensemble. Therefore, it seems counterintuitive that a strongly interacting system, such as the Luttinger liquid, should not present any relaxation dynamics. This peculiar fact is due to the integrability of the Luttinger model, i.e. the existence of an infinite number of conserved quantities that precludes the equilibration process. However, in the past few years it has become clear that integrable systems can present some kind of relaxation, even though not towards the Gibbs equilibrium ensemble. Remarkably, the necessity of correctly taking into account some particular non-equilibrium configurations, also revealed the necessity of modifying bosonization, a technique widely used to study strongly interacting systems in one dimension. In this work we focus on three different cases: • Relaxation of high energy electrons injected in a ν = 1/3 chiral Luttinger liquid and in a standard Luttinger liquid. • Heating and the emergence of effective temperatures in a Quantum Hall system at fractional filling fraction ν = 2/3 partitioned by a Quantum Point Contact. • Effect of relaxation on shot-noise measurement of the quasi-particle charge in a ν = 2 QH state.

Us and Them: The Role of Inter-Group Distance and Size in Predicting Civil Conflict

Recent large-N studies conclude that inequality and ethnic distribution have no significant impact on the risk of civil conflict. This study argues that such conclusions are erroneous and premature due to incorrect specification of independent variables and functional forms. Case studies suggest that measures of inter-group inequality (horizontal inequality) and polarization (ethnic distribution distance from a bipolar equilibrium) are more accurate predictors of civil conflict, as they better capture the group-motivation aspect of conflict. This study explores whether indicators of inequality and ethnic distribution impact the probability of civil conflict across 38 developing countries in the period 1986 to 2004. Analysis reveals that horizontal inequality and polarization have significant, robust relationships with civil conflict. Furthermore, vertical, or individual, inequality is a robust, significant predictor of civil conflict when specified as a nonlinear function.

Etablissement du diagramme de phase de bosons bidimensionnels avec couplage spin-orbite / Finite temperature phases of two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosons

Cette thèse est dédiée à l'étude théorique de phases exotiques dans un gaz dilué de bosons avec deux composantes (spins) en présence d'un couplage spin-orbite (SOC) entre ces deux états internes. En ajoutant ce dernier couplage à une description de type champs classiques de notre système, nous montrons que cette méthode permet de prédire le diagramme de phase à température finie de manière quantitative, efficace et fiable. Notre étude porte particulièrement sur un système de bosons bidimensionnels avec SOC dont nous dessinons le diagramme de phase en fonction de l'anisotropie du couplage spin-orbite ainsi que des interactions. Dans le cas d'un SOC anisotrope, une transition de phase de type Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless sépare une phase dite normale d'une phase superfluide à plus basse température. L'ordre des spins du quasi-condensat dans la phase superfluide est alors guidé par les interactions de contact dépendantes du spin. Elles favorisent l'apparition soit d'un état onde plane avec moment non-nul (PW) soit d'une superposition linéaire de deux ondes planes appelée état de bande (SP). Pour des interactions indépendantes du spin des particules, nos simulations indiquent une fractionalisation du quasi-condensat. Les états PW et SP restent alors dégénérés. Dans le cas d'un SOC isotrope, nos calculs n'indiquent aucune transition de phase à la limite thermodynamique et à température finie. Un changement de comportement non critique subsiste pour un nombre important mais fini d'atomes. / In this thesis, we theoretically study the occurrence of exotic phases in a dilute two component (spin) Bose gas with artificial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the two internal states. Including spin-orbit coupling in classical field Monte Carlo calculations, we show that this method can be used for reliable, quantitative predictions of the finite temperature phase diagram. In particular, we have focused on SOCed bosons in two spatial dimensions and established the phase diagram for isotropic and anisotropic SOC and interparticle interactions. In the case of anisotropic SOC, the system undergoes a Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from a normal to a superfluid state at low temperature. The spin order of the quasicondensate in the low temperature superfluid phase is driven by the spin dependence of the interparticle interaction, favoring either the occurence of a single plane wave state at non-vanishing momentum (PW) or a linear sperposition of two plane waves with opposite momenta, called stripe phase (SP). For spin-independent interparticle interaction, our simulations indicate a fractionalized quasicondensate where PW and SP remain degenerate. For isotropic SOC, our calculations indicate that no true phase transition at finite temperature occurs in the thermodynamic limit, but a cross-over behavior remains visible for large, but finite number of atoms.

<p>This thesis deals with the problematic question of aid as a helping hand to states that are in the process of developing democracy. It focuses on the Sub Saharan African region as a critical case, and furthermore upon the aid contributions made by the European Union during the time period of 1996-2006. The main ambition is to explore the real effect of aid on the democratic process, but also to explore other variables that might have effect. The method used is regression analysing of a database called The Quality of Government database Cross – Section Time-Series May 2008. The database has later been modified to suit my specific needs and aid has been recoded. This thesis is meant to be a theory testing study, and the theories tested will be related to the independent variables such as aid as a democratic helping hand as well as theories of corruption, political participation and military rule in the search for democracy. </p>

The present research assesses 20 years of regulation in Brazil focusing on the main aspects related to party fragmentation: partisan creation rules, thresholds, prerogatives in legislatures and party funding - collated to party EffNs indices from 1994 to 2015. Besides, it organizes the EMB data on party registering since 1979, the electoral party offer since 1994, and assesses the EffNs in the beginning of each legislative year in order to check fragmentation after elections. The research adds a Legislative approach, counting time in Congresses. It concludes that the constant amendments on the original National Party Act (Law # 9,096/1995) – many of them by judicial review jeopardized the balance intended by the Constitutional Writers who fostered party creation, controlled by a legislature threshold that regulated access to party funding, using carrots more than sticks to enhance a democratic culture in a new democracy. The amendments, including ban on threshold and increasing party funding with spread distribution, ended up promoting the creation of parties by floor-crossing with all the prerogatives of elected members backed by judicial reviews. The results compromise electoral integrity and contribute to the institutional crisis the country faces today. / A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar as causas da fragmentação partidária no atual período democrático do Brasil, tomada como proxy para a crescente percepção de dissenso entre as bancadas, a partir da análise da Lei dos Partidos (9.096/1995) e suas alterações até 2015. A fragmentação, medida pelo índice EffNs, é a variável dependente e a regulação partidária a variável independente. Para tanto, compara a legislação partidária atual com a existente desde a primeira Lei Orgânica dos Partidos (LOPP), ainda no regime militar, em 1965, privilegiando as principais inovações relacionadas ao aumento do número de partidos com representação: as regras para a criação de partidos, o funcionamento parlamentar atrelado à cláusula de desempenho e a distribuição de recursos do fundo partidário. Em seguida, faz um levantamento sistemático dos pedidos de registro de partidos desde o fim do bipartidarismo na 46ª Legislatura (1979 – 1983), sua relação com a oferta eleitoral de partidos cotejada pelo índice de fragmentação, medido pelo Número Efetivo de Partidos baseados nos assentos (EffNs), desde as eleições de 1994 - que trouxeram à Câmara dos Deputados a última bancada eleita antes da alteração da legislação, em 1995 - até 2015. Detém particular atenção sobre os períodos “intereleições” a partir da análise da movimentação das bancadas e seus efeitos sobre a fragmentação no início dos trabalhos de cada sessão legislativa entre 1995 e 2014. A pesquisa contribui com a literatura sobre multipartidarismo brasileiro, a partir do estudo de 20 anos de vigência do principal documento legal sobre a atual organização dos partidos no Brasil. Conclui que o fim da cláusula de desempenho, o aumento dos recursos e da distribuição igualitária do fundo e a punição da infidelidade partidária com a perda do mandato acabaram por quebrar o equilíbrio traçado pela Constituinte e pela legislação original, que incentivava o consenso e a construção de maiorias, com engenhoso mecanismo de freios e contrapesos de caráter muito mais educativo (carrots) do que punitivo (sticks). Com o apoio dos tribunais superiores, estas alterações tiveram como corolário a criação de partidos com recrutamento de quadros internos com todas as prerrogativas proporcionais à bancada eleita, na 54ª Legislatura (2011 – 2015), comprometendo a integridade eleitoral, a formação de maiorias e, consequentemente, a governabilidade, contribuindo para a grave crise institucional do presidencialismo de coalizão.

Numerical study of fractional topological insulators / Etude numérique des isolants topologiques fractionnaires

Les isolants topologiques sont des isolants qui ne peuvent être différenciés des isolants atomiques que par une grandeur physique non locale appelée invariant topologique. L'effet Hall quantique et son équivalent sans champ magnétique l'isolant de Chern sont des exemples d'isolants topologiques. En présence d'interactions fortes, des excitations exotiques appelées anyons peuvent apparaître dans les isolants topologiques. L'effet Hall quantique fractionnaire (EHQF) est la seule réalisation expérimentale connue de ces phases. Dans ce manuscrit, nous étudions numériquement les conditions d'émergence de différents isolants topologiques fractionnaires. Nous nous concentrons d'abord sur l'étude de l'EHQF sur le tore. Nous introduisons une méthode de construction projective des états EHQF les plus exotiques complémentaire par rapport aux méthodes existantes. Nous étudions les excitations de basse énergie sur le tore de deux états EHQF, les états de Laughlin et de Moore-Read. Nous proposons des fonctions d'onde pour les décrire, et vérifions leur validité numériquement. Grâce à cette description, nous caractérisons les excitations de basse énergie de l'état de Laughlin dans les isolants de Chern. Nous démontrons également la stabilité d'autres états de l'EHQF dans les isolants de Chern, tels que les états de fermions composites, Halperin et NASS. Nous explorons ensuite des phases fractionnaires sans équivallent dans la physique de l'EHQF, d'abord en choisissant un modèle dont l'invariant topologique a une valeur plus élevée, puis en imposant au système la conservation de la symétrie par renversement du temps, ce qui modifie la nature de l'invariant topologique. / Topological insulators are band insulators which are fundamentally different from atomic insulators. Only a non-local quantity called topological invariant can distinguish these two phases. The quantum Hall effect is the first example of a topological insulator, but the same phase can arise in the absence of a magnetic field, and is called a Chern insulator. In the presence of strong interactions, topological insulators may host exotic excitations called anyons. The fractional quantum Hall effect is the only experimentally realized example of such phase. In this manuscript, we study the conditions of emergence of different types of fractional topological insulators, using numerical simulations. We first look at the fractional quantum Hall effect on the torus. We introduce a new projective construction of exotic quantum Hall states that complements the existing construction. We study the low energy excitations on the torus of two of the most emblematic quantum Hall states, the Laughlin and Moore-Read states. We propose and validate model wave functions to describe them. We apply this knowledge to characterize the excitations of the Laughlin state in Chern insulators. We show the stability of other fractional quantum Hall states in Chern insulators, the composite fermion, Halperin and NASS states. We explore the physics of fractional phases with no equivalent in a quantum Hall system, using two different strategies: first by choosing a model with a higher value of the topological invariant, second by adding time-reversal symmetry, which changes the nature of the topological invariant.

THE ENTANGLEMENT ENTROPY NEAR LIFSHITZ QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITIONS & THE EMERGENT STATISTICS OF FRACTIONALIZED EXCITATIONS

<p>In Part I, the relationship between the topology of the Fermi surface and the entanglement entropy S is examined. Spinless fermionic systems on one and two dimensional lattices at fixed chemical potential are considered. The lattice is partitioned into sub-system of length L and environment, and the entanglement of the subsystem with the environment is calculated via the correlation matrix. S is plotted as a function of the next-nearest or next-next nearest neighbor hopping parameter, t. In 1 dimension, the entanglement entropy jumps at lifshitz transitions where the number of Fermi points changes. In 2 dimensions, a neck-collapsing transition is accompanied by a cusp in S, while the formation of electron or hole-like pockets coincides with a kink in the S as a function of the hopping parameter. The entanglement entropy as a function of subsystem length L is also examined. The leading order coefficient of the LlnL term in 2 dimensions was seen to agree well with the Widom conjecture. Of interest is the difference this coefficient and the coefficient of the term linear in L near the neck-collapsing point. The leading order term changes like |t-t<sub>c</sub>|<sup>1/2</sup> whereas the first sub-leading term varies like |t-t<sub>c</sub>|<sup>1/3</sup>, where t<sub>c</sub> is the critical value of the hopping parameter at the transition.</p> <p>In Part II, we study the statistics of fractionalized excitations in a bosonic model which describes strongly interacting excitons in a N-band insulator. The elementary excitations of this system are strings, in a large N limit. A string is made of a series of bosons whose flavors are correlated such that the end points of a string carries a fractionalized flavor quantum number. When the tension of a string vanishes, the end points are deconfined. We determine the statistics of the fractionalized particles described by the end points of strings. We show that either bosons or Fermions can arise depending on the microscopic coupling constants. In the presence of the cubic interaction in the Hamiltonian as the only higher order interaction term, it was shown that bosons are emergent. In the presence of the quartic interaction with a positive coupling constant, it was revealed that the elementary excitations of the system possess Fermion statistics.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

A presente tese aborda particularmente dois tópicos fundamentais da teoria quântica de campos: As Anomalias quânticas e o Fracionamento do número fermiônico. Especí camente, estamos interessados na realização de ambos fenômenos em redes de grafeno com deformações. No grafeno, um potencial vector de gauge axial surge como produto de deformações locais da rede, na forma de defeitos topológicos ou corrugações suaves. Analisaremos a in uência desses campos pseudomagnéticos nos estados eletrônicos para uma partícula, quando interagem com um campo magnético externo, considerando diferentes con gurações para esses campos. Estudamos o papel que desempenham os estados de modo-zero na indução de um número fermiônico fracionário e sua conexão com a anomalia de paridade. / Since approximately the late 1970s, topological quantum effects in condensed matter systems that are shown the occur at a theoretical level in quantum field theory have attracted the attention of physicists. In this context, the graphene is one of the major lines of research within the studies of materials science. The fact that the electronic excitations of low energy are described by Dirac fermions, stimulating a fruitful relationship between condensed matter and high energy physics, providing favorable scenarios for the arising of new and exotic phenomena which are of great interest in the current condensedmatter physics. This thesis addresses particularly two key topics of quantum field theory: Quantum anomalies and the fermion number fractionalization. Specifically, we are interested in performing both phenomena in deformed graphene lattice. In graphene, an axial vector potential arises as the result of local deformations on the lattice, as topological defects or soft corrugations. We analyze the ináuence of these pseudo-magnetic fields on the one-particle states, when interacting with a background magnetic field, for differents conÖguration for the fields. We study the role played by zero-mode states in fractional fermion number induced and its connection with the anomaly of parity.
