This paper examines the use of symbolism when companies communicate through advertisement. This is done by using a symbolic interactionist and dramaturgical approach to the use of symbols in advertisements. The field of previous research has also been studied and taken into consideration when analyzing the advertisements. The setup of this study is a unique combination between the field of social psychology and marketing. The base perspective of Blumers symbolic interactionism and Goffmans dramaturgy is used when examining how symbolism are used by companies in advertisements. This is where the study’s uniqueness comes from. Although previous research has touched the topic, none have looked at symbolism in marketing this way. The aim of this study is to contribute with research that brings knowledge to the field of both social psychology and marketing. The analysis of the advertisements shows that all the companies use symbolism in different ways to communicate their intended message. A consistent way that symbolism is used through the different advertisements is by connecting the symbolism of everyday situations to the company or their products. Through symbolic messaging the advertisements proved to also attempt to imbue the products with a symbolic meaning. Additional ways that symbolism is used in advertising are discussed thoroughly in the paper.

Computational Studies of Electrorheological Emulsions

In this thesis we report the results of investigations on the rheological response of emulsions to the application of the electric field. A front-tracking finite difference scheme is used in conjunction with Taylor-Melcher leaky dielectric theory to study the problem. The numerical results in different regions of the deformation-circulation map show that the structure formation in regions I and III can be hindered by the hydrodynamic effect. This is opposite to what is observed in the perfect dielectric cases and region II of the map. For perfect dielectric systems, where the electrohydrodynamics effects are absent, droplets form chain-like structures spanning the distance between the electrodes after the application of the electric field. Subsequently, the chains interact with each other to form columns comprising two or more chains. Point-dipole approximation is used to analyze the structure formation and it is shown that it is also applicable to region II where the hydrodynamic effect is weak and the behavior of the system is mainly governed by the dielectrophoretic forces. It is shown that the chain formation is not possible in regions I and III due to the competition between the dipolar force and torque on one side and hydrodynamic effect on the other side. In region I, the hydrodynamic torque prevents the chain formation by competing with the dipolar torque, which tends to align the drops with the electric field. On the other hand, in region III, the repulsive nature of the hydrodynamic effect opposes the attractive dipolar force and does not allow the particles to form stable chains.

Improving Communication between Front-end developer and Client at Company X

This bachelor thesis work at MAU (Malmoe University) was carried out in Sweden at Company X. Company X is a Swedish IT company that provide SaaS (Software as a Service) as e-commerce solutions for small- to medium-sized businesses. The purpose of this project is to analyse the current design process of Company X with the aim of improving the communication between front-end developer and client by providing them with a tangible tool in order to align the front-end developer with the expectations of the clients. The two methods that was used to collect data was individual semi-structured interviews and an online co-creation session which were analysed through grounded theory. The analyzations of the results of this thesis clarified that miscommunication occurs depending on several factors which causes different issues. The conclusions of this thesis are that data that is highly abstract is understood differently by different social worlds, resulting in issues within the communication between front-end developer and client as well as limiting the front-end developments contribution to appearance which causes the organisation to exclude the opportunity of business success. Due to data getting altered when going through several actors before reaching the front-end developer, it was argued that miscommunication occur throughout the design process of Company X. The issues within the occurring communication affects the design projects outcome negatively. Subsequently, it was argued that the current design process of Company X is in need of a portfolio containing visual explanations since a portfolio is a simple tool to use in order to make a viewer understand which would potentially decrease the levels of miscommunication as well as aligning the front-end developers with the expectations of the client.

Les thèmes de prédilection du Front national dans la presse régionale : vers une meilleure compréhension du rôle des médias dans les succès électoraux des partis de la droite radicale populiste

Cette thèse traite de l’impact du contenu des médias sur le vote pour les partis de la droite radicale populiste en Europe, à travers l’analyse du cas du Front national français. Adoptant une approche contextuelle, elle affirme qu’il convient de distinguer, entre, d’une part, la visibilité médiatique dont l’effet est circonscrit à la phase d’émergence électorale de ces partis; et, d’autre part, l’effet de priming des thèmes FN (l’immigration, l’insécurité, le populisme anti-élite, l’Europe et l’islam) qui lui seul est en mesure de rendre compte de la manière dont le contenu des médias impacterait le vote pour ces partis une fois qu’ils deviennent bien établis dans le système partisan d’un pays donné. Mobilisant les théories sur les effets des médias comme cadre théorique, le département comme unité d’analyse, les deux mois qui précèdent les élections présidentielles françaises de 2012 et 2017 comme cadre temporel et collectant le contenu de la presse régionale française à partir de plus de 11 000 unes, cette thèse démontre que : primo, ni la visibilité médiatique du Front national ni celle de sa présidente Marine Le Pen ne permettent d’expliquer les variations du vote frontiste. Secundo, l’immigration, la thématique la plus fortement associée à ce parti ne fait pas l’objet de priming de la part des médias. Tertio, de l’ensemble des thèmes FN, le priming de l’insécurité est celui qui favorise le plus fortement le vote pour ce parti, même après avoir contrôlé avec des facteurs du monde réel comme le taux de criminalité, le niveau du chômage et la densité de la population dans le département. Quarto, l’absence d’un effet propre pour le priming de l’islam vu que ce thème est devenu indissociable de la thématique de l’insécurité dans la foulée des attentats qui ont touché la France à partir de 2012. Quinto, l’impact positif du priming des scandales politiques, utilisés comme proxy pour le populisme anti-élite, est conditionnel à la faiblesse électorale de la gauche radicale populiste. Sexto, le priming de l’Europe est le seul à avoir un impact négatif sur le vote FN reflétant ainsi l’incapacité de ce parti à tirer profit de la médiatisation de la question européenne, même s’il a fait du rejet de l’Europe un élément central de son offre politique.

Effect of frontal passage on 24-hour thermal variability of urban heat islands

Building materials, lack of vegetation and absence of open spaces in urban areas cause surfaces such as asphalt to become warmer than nearby vegetated surfaces that surround the city, creating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Little investigation has been done regarding temperature changes across these surfaces before and after frontal passages. This study analyzes the 24-hour temperature difference as a result of a cold front passage by examining the transitional seasons (Spring and Fall) for Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Kansas City, Missouri. This research focused on investigating the pattern of moist and dry tropical air masses preceding a transitional air mass and moist and dry polar air masses the proceeding 24-hours. Using recorded hourly data from Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS) stations during these events one can visualize the time lag in temperature change between sites in developed urban areas and surrounding more vegetated surfaces outside the city.

The study of soldier’s experience is important to understanding the effect that wars have on society. In the latter part of the 19th century the experience of warfare changed due to advances in weapons technology. The defensive tactic of trench warfare gained new importance. The most prolific use of trench warfare occured on the Western Front in the First World War, but it was during the siege of Petersburg in the American Civil War that extensive trenches were first used with technologically advanced weapons. By comparing the siege of Petersburg with the Western Front, it is clear that similar conditions elicited similar emotional reactions from soldiers. The most common reactions were fraternization and war neurosis. Fraternization was more prevelant during the siege of Petersburg than at other times during the war. Fraternization was also common on the Western Front. The reasons for this vary, but are all linked to the nature of trench warfare. War neurosis was also caused by the conditions of the trenches. It was a bigger problem at Petersburg and on the Western Front than it was for soldiers in other conflicts. Trench warfare created these emotional reactions. / Master of Arts

A New Geophysical Strategy for Measuring the Thickness of the Critical Zone

Estimates of the depth and variation of lateritic weathering profiles are especially important in tropical areas such as Oahu, HI. Shear-wave velocity data were obtained by a new application of Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) to map the base of the critical zone, to show variations in the LWP, and to derive weathering rates. The MASW technique proved highly capable of imaging the base of the critical zone, confirmed by lithological well data and direct field measurements. Profile thickness can be obtained without drilling, which has applications in engineering and geochemical studies. The measured rate of advance of the weathering front derived from the thickness measured by MASW ranged from 0.019 m/ka to 0.30 m/ka in mesic zones; about 1500 mm of annual rainfall, while a zone of 800 mm of annual rain fall revealed rates ranging from 0.011 m/ka to 0.013 m/ka. These rates are comparable to geochemically derived rates in previous studies. Standard p-wave seismic reflection data were insufficient for detecting boundaries as the weathering boundaries are gradational and do not produce reflections. Shear-wave models also showed internal velocity variations that may be caused by weathering heterogeneity due to textural differences in parental lava flows. Soil chemistry revealed the nature of weathering products as enriched in Al, Fe, Ni, and Cr, and commonly contain alteration minerals such as halloysite, kaolinite, maghemite, and ferrihydrite. Imaging depth limitations were overcome by innovative experiment designs, pushing the boundaries of the current technology. Increasing offsets and combining dispersion curves allowed for a more objective picking of the dispersion curve into the lower frequency domain. Even further improvements were made from a newly developed form of the active/passive technique. These advancements in technology allowed for detailed imaging of the subsurface with greater modeling confidence. This study showed that velocity models derived from MASW are accurately able to describe laterite weathering profiles in terms of depth and variability, expanding the use of the MASW technique beyond its traditional applications and making it a potential tool of interest for many fields of geoscience.

The July Arctic Front in North America from ECMWF ERA-40 and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Products

Boundaries between air masses, called frontal zones, have been associated with vegetation boundaries (Bryson, 1966; Hare and Ritchie, 1972). Using gridded climate reanalysis data, we analyze the air masses and frontal zones of North America. The position of the July Arctic front varies significantly through the period 1948-2007, with a mean position similar to that found by Bryson (1966). The variability of the front position can be associated with changes in the general circulation; when the AO and SOI are positive (negative), the position of the July Arctic front is further north (south). There is also more variability in the July Arctic front position in Eastern versus Western Canada. When the July Arctic front is north (south) of the mean position, the boreal forest and tundra vegetation is more (less) productive. Design And Implementation Of A Hardware Level Content Networking Front End Device

The bandwidth and speed of network connections are continually increasing. The speed increase in network technology is set to soon outpace the speed increase in CMOS technology. This asymmetrical growth is beginning to causing software applications that once worked with then current levels of network traffic to flounder under the new high data rates. Processes that were once executed in software now have to be executed, partially if not wholly in hardware. One such application that could benefit from hardware implementation is high layer routing. By allowing a network device to peer into higher layers of the OSI model, the device can scan for viruses, provide higher quality-of-service (QoS), and efficiently route packets. This thesis proposes an architecture for a device that will utilize hardware-level string matching to distribute incoming requests for a server farm. The proposed architecture is implemented in VHDL, synthesized, and laid out on an Altera FPGA.
