A MMC Controller for Wearable Data Logging and Front-end Amplifier

Huang, Yan-ru 13 August 2009 (has links)
There are many kinds of commercial memory cards on the market. Due to great improvements in modern technology, they have great amounts of capacity, low power consumption, and are easily available. Therefore a data logging system using a commercial memory card is a convenient and economic procedure. This thesis introduces a wearable data logging system for physiological recording. A front-end amplifier, analog to digital converter, and a memory card controller compose the basis of this system. The front-end amplifier uses a switched-capacitor structure, so the output waveform is discrete in regard to the time domain. This brings an advantage in saving power for not keeping charging the load capacitance. Lateral bipolar transistors fabricated in a CMOS process are used as input devices. A conventional ADC is used to convert the amplified signal into digital data. Finally MultiMediaCard is chosen as a large storage space. This thesis contributes the analysis, design and measurement of the amplifier front-end. In addition, the design and implementation of a controller circuit for sequential data storage into the MultiMediaCard memory is described. Special attention was paid to achieving a small area, low-complexity and low-power implementation suitable for integration. Measured results obtained from a preliminary FPGA implementation are reported and the functionality of a complete logger circuit is demonstrated with measured results.

George Habash : a new look at his origins and politics

Joyce, Anthony Vincent 20 February 2012 (has links)
This paper argues that George Habash, founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), embodied and expressed a distinctly new style of politics with the Palestinian context. I argue that Habash, unlike both his political antecedents during Mandate Palestine and his contemporaries in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) practiced a style of politics that was distinctly uncompromising towards ideological opponents, hostile to traditional structures of patrician leadership in Palestine, and aggressively confrontational in most situations. The time-span of this analysis begins in Chapter One in late Ottoman Palestine, where I appropriate and modify Albert Hourani’s thesis of the “politics of the notables” as a way of framing the relationships between different hierarchically segmented actors in Palestinian society from the Ottoman era up until the end of the British Mandate and the formation of Israel in 1948. Chapter 2 analyzes Habash’s entrance into the broader Arab political arena after the Palestinian exile, focusing on his involvement in and leadership of the Arab Nationalist Movement (ANM) and his patronage relationship with Gamal Abdel Nasir. Chapter Three transitions into the post-1967 war era, where I argue that Habash’s political philosophy, influence and confrontational praxis reached its zenith with the formation of the PFLP. The Conclusion briefly addresses his posthumous influence in contemporary Palestinian politics and the ways that different observers eulogize or criticize his legacy. / text

Case study analysis in support of front end planning on capital projects

Irons, Kyle Taylor 08 July 2015 (has links)
Many research investigations have indicated that projects have a higher chance of success when thorough front end planning is performed. Previous research efforts have sought to determine a statistical link between front end planning and the performance metrics for both building and industrial projects. The author of this thesis intends to supplement prior research with case study analysis that provides situational insight that supports business decision making of business managers and project representatives. The research conducted in this study was performed in conjunction with CII Research Team 213, Support for Pre-Project Planning. The data for this thesis was gathered through a series of questionnaires and interviews with project representatives from 17 projects totaling $1.5 billion. Case studies were written by the author, reviewed by supervising professor and project representatives for accuracy and anonymity. The lessons learned from the case studies were distilled and evaluated to uncover correlations between front end planning issues and project success. A matrix of issues was created, and along with pattern-matching techniques, project data were sorted. The conclusions were drawn using expert knowledge of the author, supervising professor and research team. The case study analyses identified several planning related issues that affect project success, including: defined front end planning process, adequate scope definition, existing conditions definition, correct contracting strategy, alignment, teambuilding, participation of owner and contractors in the front end planning process, leadership, experience, and labor availability and skill. Anecdotal evidence is provided to support the proper implementation of these issues. / text

Moteriškos palaidinės priekio detalių konstrukciniai sprendimai / Women's blouse front detail design solutions

Vozgirdaitė, Dovilė 29 June 2012 (has links)
Bakalaurinio darbo tikslas – sumodeliuoti tris skirtingas moteriškas palaidines, ant vieno bazinio pagrindo. Darbo pradžioje pateikta mados krypties analizė, kurioje didelis dėmesys skirtas moteriškos palaidinės išvaizdai, konstrukcijai, modelių įvairumui bei spalvų gamai. Aprašyti projektuojamų modelių eskizai.Gaminio bazinė konstrukcija sudaryta remiantis anglų autoriaus Winifred Aldrich moteriškos palaidinės konstravimo metodika. Ant šios konstrukcijos atlikti trijų palaidinių priekio detalių konstrukciniai modeliavimai. Naudojant kompiuterinę programą COMTENS sudarytos to paties dydžio gaminio vieno ir dviejų komplektų išklotinės, apskaičiuotos medžiagų sąnaudos bei tarplekalinės atliekos. Išanalizuota kokybės kontrolės svarba gaminio projektavimo etapuose, kuri sudaryta galutinės kontrolės pagrindinių rodiklių lentelė. / The goal of the thesis – to model three different blouses using one and the same basis. In the beginning of the work, the analysis of the fashion trend, where the most attention is paid to the look, construction, variety of model and the colour spectrum of the blouse, is presented. The sketches of the designed models are being described. The basic construction of the product is designed according to the Winifred Aldrich methodology of the women’s blouse. Three front detail constructional modelling is implemented in this construction. With the help of the computerized program COMTENS, the listing output of one and two set of the product of the same size were composed.

Multiobjective Optimization Algorithm Benchmarking and Design Under Parameter Uncertainty

LALONDE, NICOLAS 13 August 2009 (has links)
This research aims to improve our understanding of multiobjective optimization, by comparing the performance of five multiobjective optimization algorithms, and by proposing a new formulation to consider input uncertainty in multiobjective optimization problems. Four deterministic multiobjective optimization algorithms and one probabilistic algorithm were compared: the Weighted Sum, the Adaptive Weighted Sum, the Normal Constraint, the Normal Boundary Intersection methods, and the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The algorithms were compared using six test problems, which included a wide range of optimization problem types (bounded vs. unbounded, constrained vs. unconstrained). Performance metrics used for quantitative comparison were the total run (CPU) time, number of function evaluations, variance in solution distribution, and numbers of dominated and non-optimal solutions. Graphical representations of the resulting Pareto fronts were also presented. No single method outperformed the others for all performance metrics, and the two different classes of algorithms were effective for different types of problems. NSGA-II did not effectively solve problems involving unbounded design variables or equality constraints. On the other hand, the deterministic algorithms could not solve a problem with a non-continuous objective function. In the second phase of this research, design under uncertainty was considered in multiobjective optimization. The effects of input uncertainty on a Pareto front were quantitatively investigated by developing a multiobjective robust optimization framework. Two possible effects on a Pareto front were identified: a shift away from the Utopia point, and a shrinking of the Pareto curve. A set of Pareto fronts were obtained in which the optimum solutions have different levels of insensitivity or robustness. Four test problems were used to examine the Pareto front change. Increasing the insensitivity requirement of the objective function with regard to input variations moved the Pareto front away from the Utopia point or reduced the length of the Pareto front. These changes were quantified, and the effects of changing robustness requirements were discussed. The approach would provide designers with not only the choice of optimal solutions on a Pareto front in traditional multiobjective optimization, but also an additional choice of a suitable Pareto front according to the acceptable level of performance variation. / Thesis (Master, Mechanical and Materials Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2009-08-10 21:59:13.795
