Saving Energy and Reducing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Emissions from a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine by H2/O2 Addition to the Combustion Chamber

Huang, Yi-Sheng 23 June 2011 (has links)
The emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the diesel engine on a dynamometer by mixing ratio of the fuel (H2/O2 /diesel) was investigated. The engine was operated at a one load steady-state condition of 1,600 rpm with torque and power outputs of 145 Nm and 24.5 kW. In this condition, the measurement of the mixing ratio of the fuel (H2/O2 /diesel) was first recorded without any induction of H2/O2 mixture (Base) into the engine. Then, seven flow rate levels of H2/O2 mixture were used by 10 L/min, 20 L/min, 30 L/min, 40 L/min, 50 L/min, 60 L/min, and 70 L/min, respectively. The concentrations of total PAHs were 106.58, 101.89, 95.30, 90.70, 85.98, 82.35, 72.38, and 67.30 £gg/m3, respectively for Base (0 L/min), 10 L/min, 20 L/min, 30 L/min, 40 L/min, 50 L/min, 60 L/min, and 70 L/min of H2/O2 mixture. The emission factor of total PAHs were 6.00, 5.73, 5.36, 4.99, 4.84, 4.50, 4.07, and 3.78 mg/bhp-hr, respectively for Base (0 L/min), 10 L/min, 20 L/min, 30 L/min, 40 L/min, 50 L/min, 60 L/min, and 70 L/min of H2/O2 mixture. The removal rate of total PAHs were 4.4%, 10.6%, 14.9%, 19.3%, 22.7%, 32.1%, and 36.9%, respectively for 10 L/min, 20 L/min, 30 L/min, 40 L/min, 50 L/min, 60 L/min, and 70 L/min of H2/O2 mixture. This result showed using H2/O2 mixture significantly reduced emissions of PAHs. As the regulated harmful matters, using H2/O2 mixture, CO¡BCO2¡BTHC and PM decreased, whereas the NOx emission increased. The energy saving of the fuels (H2/O2 /diesel), the total oil equivalents combined by fuel consumption of diesel engine and electricity consumption of H2/O2 generator, were 2.42, 2.49, 2.50, 2.48, 2.51, 2.35, 2.18, and 2.17 for Base (0 L/min), 10 L/min, 20 L/min, 30 L/min, 40 L/min, 50 L/min, 60 L/min, and 70 L/min of H2/O2 mixture. The result showed that reduced saving energy of the fuel (H2/O2 /diesel) by 3.2% for 50 L/min, 9.8% for 60 L/min, and 10.4% for 70 L/min, respectively.

Paper based Supercapacitors for vehicle KERS-application

Blomquist, Nicklas January 2012 (has links)
High mobility has been a standard in the modern world for decades. This has resulted in high energy consumption, diminishing fossil energy reserves and rising levels of greenhouse gases. By recovering the energy lost in deceleration of vehicles the total energy consumption can be decreased and exhaust emissions reduced. This can be done with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) that converts kinetic energy to electric energy during deceleration, which then can be used for acceleration. KERS requires an electrical storage device with high power density, due to the high power levels generated at heavy braking. Batteries does not generally meet these requirements, especially in the cost-effective point of view, but different types of capacitors can be used to obtain a cheap and effective system. To get such an energy storage device small, lightweight and inexpensive while the technology is sustainable requires avoidance of rare metals and hazardous materials. In this master thesis energy and power levels for KERS has been modelled, based on standardized measurements techniques and small paper-based supercapacitors have been built and tested in order to model size, weight and price for a full-scale energy storage device to a KERS-application. The models showed that energy consumption in urban traffic could be reduced with 18% and with an electrode material for the energy storage device with a capacitance of about 1500 F/m2 a reasonable size and weight is obtained. To reach these values of capacitance in paper-based supercapacitors further testing is required on area and layer dependence and for different electrodes.

Essays in rural energy, forest dependency and covariates of fuel saving technologies in Ethiopia

Beyene, Abebe Damte 08 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis contains empirical findings on rural energy, forest resource use and fuel saving technologies in Ethiopia. Using a household survey data conducted in different parts of the country, efforts were made to contribute to the limited empirical evidences in Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular. The thesis has four empirical chapters and the first and the last chapters of the thesis are the introduction and summary, respectively. The main findings and policy implications are highlighted below. The second chapter examines the coping mechanisms of rural households to fuel wood scarcity. Using randomly selected households, the results of the empirical analysis show that rural households residing in forest degraded areas respond to fuel wood shortages by increasing their labor input to fuel wood collection. The study also finds that there is no evidence for the substitution between fuel wood and dung or fuel wood and crop residues. Supply side strategies alone may not be effective in addressing the problem of forest degradation and biodiversity losses. Any policy on natural resource management in general and rural energy problems in particular should make a distinction between regions of different forest degradation level. The third chapter examines the relationship between property rights and household demand for fuel wood, as measured by the source from which fuel wood is collected. Results from the discrete choice model indicate that active local-level institutions reduce the dependency on community forests, but, otherwise, increase household dependency on open access forests. However, land tenure security and local level institutions do not increase demand for fuel wood collected from private forests. The results suggest that there is a need to bring more open access forests under the management of the community and increase the quality of community forestry management in order to realize improvements in forest conservation. The fourth chapter of this thesis deals with finding empirical evidence on the role of local level institutions and property right regimes on forest dependency using data from a random sample of rural households in Ethiopia. We find that forest dependency is negatively correlated to the wealth status of the household. Our estimation results suggest that local level institutions are not significant factors in determining use of non wood forest products unlike major forest products such as timber or woody materials in general. We also find that there is a need to expand the current practice of participatory forest management to other open access forest areas. We conclude that generalization on the forest-poverty link depends on the type of forest management and the specific characteristics that prevail in the area. The last chapter of the thesis deals with finding empirical evidence on the determinants of adoption of different types of fuel saving technologies in urban Ethiopia. The duration analysis suggests that adoption rates have been increasing over time, that income and wealth are important contributors to adoption, and that substitute technologies tend to hinder adoption of Lakech charcoal stove. However, it was not possible to consider prices or perceptions related to either the technologies or biomass availability in the duration models, and, therefore, further research is needed in order to further inform policy with respect to household technology adoption decisions. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Economics / unrestricted

Application of Power Regenerative Boom system to excavator

Joo, Choonshik, Stangl, Martin 03 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This paper is presenting the application of Power Regenerative Boom(PRB) system to excavator. In order to increase the fuel efficiency of the excavator, potential energy of the front structure is recuperated by the hydraulic hybrid system with electric-hydraulic control, during boom down motion. Charged energy into accumulator is reused after boom down motion, the pressurized oil goes to hydraulic motor. The hydraulic motor is mounted on the engine PTO(Power Take-Off), therefore output torque of the hydraulic motor assists the diesel engine directy, it leads to decrease fuel consumption of diesel engine. After the system design and simulation investigation, the presented system was installed into Doosan’s 38ton excavator, DX380LC-3 model, and the energy saving result was verified by a digging and dumping repetition test. The test result shows that fuel consumption was dramatically decreased by 5.0 L/hr compared to the standard DX380LC-3.

Andersson, Daniel, Petter, Andersson January 2017 (has links)
Denna statistik fördes in i beräkningsmodellen. / To maintain a comfortable climate on board ships, cooling is necessary during the warm period of the year which requires energy. This thesis is a survey about whether so-called free cooling could reduce this energy consumption. The ROPAX-ferry Finntrader trafficking the route Malmö–Travemünde has been used as an example. This survey was carried out by creating a calculation model in which a brine system with a possibility of free cooling was connected to Finntrader’s current HVAC-system, alongside the current chillers. Statistics of air temperature, air humidity and sea water temperature was acquired for the period 2013-2015 and were inserted into the calculation model. These calculations showed that a certain amount ofenergy could be saved with free cooling, how much depending on the effectiveness of the heat exchangers. The amount of energy that could be saved was quite small compared to the cost of the components required by the model.

Jakobsson, Niklas, Rydholm, Peter January 2017 (has links)
There are economical, safetylike and environmental benefits of applying eco-driving. Previous research has shown that cars, trains and aviation have made significant savings economically and environmentaly speaking, but how does that transcend into the maritime business? With this question as a background, the aim with this thesis is to examine the interest of ecodriving among Swedish shipowners and authorities. The data in this thesis is derived from qualitative interviews with employees in executive land-based positions. The result shows that several of the shipowners and authorities are in the starting pits or are already conducting one or more eco-driving methods in their operations. The result also shows that there is a variety of prerequisites and perceptions of what eco-driving is and what is could become in the future among the respondents. When questions about automatization in relation to eco-driving are brought up, the result is ambiguous.

Evaluierung des Einsparpotentials durch Energierückgewinnung aus dem hybraulischen Kreislauf eines Hafenmobilkrans / Estimation of the Energy Saving Potential through Energy Recovery in the Hydraulic System of a Mobile Harbour Crane

Tempelhahn, Conny 19 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Due to stricter emission restrictions and rising fuel costs energy efficiency of mobile work machines is getting more important. In cooperation with Dresden University of Technology, Gottwald Port Technology GmbH has developed a mobile harbour crane with a hybrid drive train. This system can recuperate the kinetic and potential energy from the electrical slewing and hoisting gear, which was formerly dissipated to heat. This paper deals with the identification of a technical solution to recuperate energy form the hydraulic luffing gear to determine the potential reduction of fuel consumption. At first, the actual hydraulic system is analyzed to estimate the requirements of the new recuperation system. For that purpose, models of the kinematics and kinetics of the luffing gear are created. With the help of weighted criteria, a hydraulic concept is chosen of several alternatives. Afterwards, an energy flow based model in Simulink/Matlab is created and integrated in the existing simulation model of the crane. The simulation results confirm a considerable reduction of diesel fuel due to the application of hydraulic recuperation system.
