A framework for fully decentralised cycle stealingMason, Richard S. January 2007 (has links)
Ordinary desktop computers continue to obtain ever more resources – in-creased processing power, memory, network speed and bandwidth – yet these resources spend much of their time underutilised. Cycle stealing frameworks harness these resources so they can be used for high-performance computing. Traditionally cycle stealing systems have used client-server based architectures which place significant limits on their ability to scale and the range of applica-tions they can support. By applying a fully decentralised network model to cycle stealing the limits of centralised models can be overcome.
Using decentralised networks in this manner presents some difficulties which have not been encountered in their previous uses. Generally decentralised ap-plications do not require any significant fault tolerance guarantees. High-performance computing on the other hand requires very stringent guarantees to ensure correct results are obtained. Unfortunately mechanisms developed for traditional high-performance computing cannot be simply translated because of their reliance on a reliable storage mechanism. In the highly dynamic world of P2P computing this reliable storage is not available. As part of this research a fault tolerance system has been created which provides considerable reliability without the need for a persistent storage.
As well as increased scalability, fully decentralised networks offer the ability for volunteers to communicate directly. This ability provides the possibility of supporting applications whose tasks require direct, message passing style communication. Previous cycle stealing systems have only supported embarrassingly parallel applications and applications with limited forms of communication so a new programming model has been developed which can support this style of communication within a cycle stealing context.
In this thesis I present a fully decentralised cycle stealing framework. The framework addresses the problems of providing a reliable fault tolerance sys-tem and supporting direct communication between parallel tasks. The thesis includes a programming model for developing cycle stealing applications with direct inter-process communication and methods for optimising object locality on decentralised networks.

Este trabalho apresenta estudos voltados ao teste de Amplificadores Diferenciais. No primeiro momento, por meio de simulações SPICE, falhas catastróficas são injetadas em dois Amplificadores Diferenciais, projetados para uma tecnologia CMOS de 0,5m com configurações complementares, a fim de comprovar a ocorrência de variações nas tensões DC dos nós do circuito sob teste à medida que há injeções de falhas no mesmo. Também se faz análises preliminares dos resultados para verificar a possibilidade de diagnosticar as falhas através de assinaturas compostas pela digitalização (em um bit) dos valores DC dos nós do circuito sob teste. Posteriormente, é desenvolvida uma metodologia de teste simples e com baixo custo, aplicável a Amplificadores Totalmente Diferenciais. Considerando a necessidade do Circuito de Realimentação de Modo Comum para manter o controle do modo comum das saídas, é proposta a reutilização deste circuito como verificador, possibilitando a observação de falhas ocorridas tanto no Amplificador quanto no próprio bloco de CMFB. Falhas catastróficas e paramétricas são injetadas, por simulação, em dois amplificadores totalmente diferenciais, um projetado em 180nm e outro em 130nm. Testes DC e transientes são realizados e a cobertura de falhas é avaliada. Os resultados das simulações apontam boa cobertura de falhas, enquanto apenas os sinais de realimentação de modo comum precisam ser monitorados. Dessa forma é proposta uma estratégia de teste que apresenta um baixo custo e uma baixa sobrecarga de área do circuito. / This work presents a study related to the testing of Differential Amplifiers. Three-Level Multiple Imputation: A Fully Conditional Specication ApproachJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: Currently, there is a clear gap in the missing data literature for three-level models.
To date, the literature has only focused on the theoretical and algorithmic work
required to implement three-level imputation using the joint model (JM) method of
imputation, leaving relatively no work done on fully conditional specication (FCS)
method. Moreover, the literature lacks any methodological evaluation of three-level
imputation. Thus, this thesis serves two purposes: (1) to develop an algorithm in
order to implement FCS in the context of a three-level model and (2) to evaluate
both imputation methods. The simulation investigated a random intercept model
under both 20% and 40% missing data rates. The ndings of this thesis suggest
that the estimates for both JM and FCS were largely unbiased, gave good coverage,
and produced similar results. The sole exception for both methods was the slope for
the level-3 variable, which was modestly biased. The bias exhibited by the methods
could be due to the small number of clusters used. This nding suggests that future
research ought to investigate and establish clear recommendations for the number of
clusters required by these imputation methods. To conclude, this thesis serves as a
preliminary start in tackling a much larger issue and gap in the current missing data

Turbulent combustion has a profound effect on the way we live our lives; homes and businesses predominantly rely on power generated by burning some form of fuel, and the vast majority of transport of passengers and cargo are driven by combustion. Fossil fuels remain readily available and relatively cheap, and so will continue to power the modern world for the foreseeable future. Combustion of fossil fuels produces emissions that detrimentally affect air quality, particularly in highly-populated cities, and are also widely believed to be contributing to global climate change. Consequently, increasing attention is being focused on alternative fuels, increased efficiency and reduced emissions. One alternative fuel is hydrogen, which introduces challenges in end-usage, storage and safety that are not encountered with more conventional fuels. Advances in computational power and software technology means that numerical simulation has a growing role in the development of combustors and safety evaluation. Despite these advances, many challenges remain; the broad range of time and length scales involved are coupled with complex thermodynamics and chemistry on top of turbulent fluid mechanics, which means that detailed simulations of even relatively-simple burners are still prohibitively expensive. Engineering turbulent flame models are required to reduce computational expense, and the challenge is to retain as much of the flow physics as possible. Furthermore, the choice of numerical approach has a significant effect on the quality of simulation, and different target applications place different demands on the numerical scheme. In the case of hydrogen explosion, the approach needs to be able to capture a range of physical behaviours including turbulence, low-speed deflagration, high-speed shock waves and potentially detonations. One such numerical approach that has enjoyed widespread success is finite volumes schemes based on the Godunov method. These methods perform well at all speeds, and have positive shock-capturing capability, but recent studies have demonstrated difficulties with numerical stability for more complex thermodynamics, specifically in the case of fully-conservative methods for multi-component fluids with varying thermodynamic properties. A recent development is the so-called double-flux method, which retains many of the positive properties of the fully-conservative approaches and does not suffer from the same numerical instabilities, but is quasi-conservative and involves additional computational expense. The present work consolidates the state-of-the-art in the literature, and considers two equation sets, based on mass fraction and volume fraction, respectively, along with fully-conservative and quasiconservative schemes. Comprehensive validation and evaluation of the different approaches is presented. It was found that both quasi-conservative approaches performed well, with a better conservative behaviour for the quasi-conservative volume fraction, but a better stability for the quasi-conservative mass fraction. Finally, the numerical tool developed is applied to turbulent combustion of premixed hydrogen in the context of the semi-confined experiments from the University of Sydney. The LES results showed an good overall agreement with the experimental data, and the critical parameters such as overpressure and flame speed where globally well captured, highlighting the large potential of LES for safety analysis.

This project is aimed at making comparison between current existing Internet- of-Things (IoT) platforms, SensibleThings (ST) and Global Sensors Networks (GSN). Project can be served as a further work of platforms’ investigation. Comparing and learning from each other aim to contribute to the improvement of future platforms development. Detailed comparison is mainly with the respect of platform feature, communication and data present-frequency performance under stress, and platform node scalability performance on one limited device. Study is conducted through developing applications on each platform, and making measuring performance under the same condition in household network environment. So far, all these respects have had results and been concluded. Qualitatively comparing, GSN performs better in the facets of node’s swift development and deployment, data management, node subscription and connection retry mechanism. Whereas, ST is superior in respects of network package encryption, platform reliability, session initializing latency, and degree of developing freedom. In quantitative comparison, nodes on GSN has better data push pressure resistence while ST nodes works with lower session latency. In terms of data present-frequency, ST node can reach higher updating frequency than GSN node. In the aspect of node sclability on one limited device, ST nodes take the advantage in averagely lower latency than GSN node when nodes number is less than 15 on limited device. But due to sharing mechanism of GSN, on one limited device, it's nodes shows more scalable if platform nodes have similar job.

Magíster en Ciencias, Mención Geología / Una de las principales variables que necesitan ser manejadas apropiadamente en minas a cielo abierto es la presión de poro generada detrás de los taludes, ya que disminuye la resistencia al corte del suelo.
El trabajo de diseño analítico y numérico para taludes ha utilizado tradicionalmente el nivel freático como entrada para los modelos geotécnicos, asumiendo implícitamente condiciones hidrostáticas en profundidad. Esta simplificación contrasta con la realidad del entorno minero, en especial en grandes minas a cielo abierto y en operaciones con programas activos de despresurización, en las que los gradientes hidráulicos verticales pueden llegar a ser importantes.
En los últimos años se ha producido un avance importante en la consideración y comprensión de la hidrogeología en la mina; y cada vez es más frecuente la utilización de modelos hidrogeológicos para la obtención de las distribuciones de la presión de poro en profundidad. Sin embargo, estos modelos presentan una limitación fundamental como es la ausencia de datos suficientes para calibrarlos. Las medidas de presión de poros en la mina son en general escasas, dispersas y se limitan en el mejor de los casos, a tres o cuatro profundidades diferentes.
Para hacer frente a la ausencia de datos, el proyecto Smart Open Pit Slope Management Project de CORFO entre CSIRO Chile y la U. de Chile contempla el desarrollo de una nueva herramienta de medición simultánea y en tiempo real del estado de la deformación y la presión de poros en profundidad con una densidad de muestreo hasta un orden de magnitud superior a los métodos convencionales. Disponer de datos reales de deformación y presión de poro representará una oportunidad única en términos de I+D en la comprensión del régimen de presiones hidráulicas que afectan a la estabilidad del talud de las minas y en la validación y el desarrollo de modelos geotécnicos acoplados.
La integración del sensor de poros a la nueva herramienta plantea desafíos como son: asegurar que la medida es fiable, precisa, no se ve alterada por el método de instalación y proporciona información en un tiempo razonable. Todo ello sin perder de vista el contexto hidrogeológico de la variable a medir (presión de poro), sus posibles variaciones en profundidad y las dificultades que enfrenta su medición en un entorno de minería a rajo abierto en rocas de baja permeabilidad.
La tesis para la obtención del magister se fundamenta en la identificación de los factores claves y las consideraciones a tener en cuenta en el desarrollo de la nueva herramienta, desde la selección e integración de los elementos y su método de instalación en sondaje, hasta una propuesta de infraestructura para llevar a cabo la instalación y las pruebas a realizar previas a su instalación en terreno.
