Estudo da possibilidade de detecção da matéria escura com telescópios Cherenkov / Study of the possibility of dark matter detection with Cherenkov telescopes

Marcomini, Jéssica Arab 18 June 2015 (has links)
The existence of dark matter is sustained by the observation of its gravitational efects on ordinary matter. Determining the particles\' properties such as mass and cross section is fundamental for the understanding of the nature of its efects on baryonic matter. On the experimental scope, Cherenkov Telescopes measure the gamma radiation coming from the cosmo with an energy between GeV &#8212TeV making it possible for an interaction to have its final product detected in one of these experiments. In this dissertation, we present an analysis of dark matter concepts considering a specific model of WIMPs particles, represented by the neutralino. We studied dwarf spheroidal galaxies as possible gamma-ray flux sources originated from the neutralino annihilation. We reproduced the results on annihilation cross section of two important experiments for this particular field (VERITAS and MAGIC), validating the codes implemented. This was perfomed with the objective of understanding the calculus involved. We studied dwarf spheroidal galaxies observed by the FERMI-LAT experiment for which upper limits flux were determined. We used these measurements and extrapolated the energy spectrum to the one to be observed by CTA. With realistic sensitivity curves for a possible CTA configuration, we determined the potencial for a dark matter detection for 18 sources studied by FERMI-LAT. Detection techniques for the H.E.S.S. II telescope, data modeling of gravitational lensing and emission of blazars in HE-VHE astronomy

Barnacka, Anna 22 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents the study of four aspects of high energy astronomy. The first part of my thesis is dedicated to an aspect of instrument development for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, namely the Level 2 trigger system of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). My work on the project focused on the algorithm development and the Monte Carlo simulations of the trigger system and overall instrument (Moudden, Barnacka, Glicenstein et al. 2011a; Moudden, Venault, Barnacka et al. 2011b). The hardware implementation of the system is described andits expected performances are then evaluated. The H.E.S.S. array has been used to observe the blazar PKS 1510-089.The second part of my thesis deals with the data analysis and modeling of broad-band emission of this particular blazar. In part II of my thesis, I am presenting the analysis of the H.E.S.S. data: the light curve and spectrum of PKS 1510-089, together with the FERMI data and a collection of multi-wavelength data obtained with various instruments. I am presenting the model of PKS 1510-089 observations carried out during a flare recorded by H.E.S.S.. The model is based on a single zone internal shock scenario. The third part of my thesis deals with blazars observed by the FERMI-LAT, but from the point of view of other phenomena: a strong gravitational lensing. This part of my thesis shows the first evidence for gravitational lensing phenomena in high energy gamma-rays. This evidence comes from the observation of a gravitational lens system induced echo in the light curve of the distant blazar PKS 1830-211. Traditionalmethods for the estimation of time delays in gravitational lensing systems rely on the cross-correlation of the light curves from individual images. In my thesis, I used 300 MeV-30 GeV photons detected by the Fermi-LAT instrument. The FERMI-LAT instrument cannot separate the images of known lenses. The observed light curve is thus the superposition of individual image light curves. The FERMI-LAT instrument has the advantage of providing long, evenly spaced, time series with very low photonnoise. This allows to use directly Fourier transform methods. A time delay between the two compact images of PKS 1830-211 has been searchedfor both by the autocorrelation method and a new method: the "double power spectrum". The double power spectrum shows a 4.2 σ evidence for a time delay of 27.1±0.6 days (Barnacka et al. 2011), consistent with the results from Lovell et al. (1998) and Wiklind & Combes (2001).The last part of my thesis concentrates on another lensing phenomena called "femtolensing". The search for femtolensing effects has been used to derive limits on the primordial black holes abundance. The abundance of primordial black holes is currently significantly constrained in a wide range of masses. The weakest limits are established for the small mass objects, where the small intensity of the associated physical phenomenon provides a challenge for current experiments. I have usedgamma-ray bursts with known redshifts detected by the FERMI Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) to search for the femtolensing effects caused by compact objects. The lack of femtolensing detection in the GBM data provides new evidence that primordial black holes in the mass range 5 × 10^17 - 10^20 g do not constitute a major fraction of dark matter (Barnacka et al. 2012). My Ph.D. studies have been carried out jointly between the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in Warsaw in Poland and the IRFU institute of the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives(CEA) Saclay in France.

Detection techniques for the H.E.S.S. II telescope, data modeling of gravitational lensing and emission of blazars in HE-VHE astronomy / Techniques de détection pour le téléscope H.E.S.S.

Barnacka, Anna 22 February 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the study of four aspects of high energy astronomy. The first part of my thesis is dedicated to an aspect of instrument development for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, namely the Level 2 trigger system of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). / Study of gamma ray emission of supernova remnants interacting with molecular clouds and optimization of H.E.S.S. data analysis.

Trichard, Cyril 22 September 2015 (has links)
The H.E.S.S. experiment is an array of Cherenkov telescopes, located in Namibia, observing the very high energy gamma rays from astrophysical sources. H.E.S.S. greatly increased our understanding of the very high energy non thermal universe. Since 2012, a fifth telescope was installed at the center of the array. This improvement increase the energy range and the sensitivity of the detector. The optimization of a multivariate analysis method, within the H.E.S.S. framework, is presented in this thesis. The Xeff analysis is improved by taking into account the observation conditions and by increasing the number of discriminating variables. The sensitivity of this analysis compared to standard analyses is demonstrated. Xeff is then used to analyze several sources of gamma rays. The effects of the focus impacting the H.E.S.S. II data are described. They are taken into account in the analysis and an optimization of the distance between the mirrors and the camera is presented. The study of the gamma emission from four candidates of molecular clouds and supernova remnant associations is presented. The H.E.S.S. data from G349.7+0.2, W51, the Tornado nebula and HESS J1745-303 is performed. The interpretation of their emission, using also Fermi-LAT data, leads to the estimation of the particles acceleration efficiency in these objects. The work described in this thesis led to the production of two internal notes in the H.E.S.S. collaboration, to several presentations in international conferences, and scientific publications.

I / Search for dark matter, Galactic Center observation with H.E.S.S. and upgrade of the H.E.S.S. I camera

Lefranc, Valentin 29 June 2016 (has links)
The ground-based Cherenkov telescope array H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) is able to detect gamma rays at very high energies (E> 50GeV) to probe the most violent non-thermal phenomena in the universe. These gamma rays can also come from dark matter particle annihilation. Gamma-ray astronomy provides a promising avenue to search for signatures of these annihilations in overdense regions of the universe. This thesis is composed of three parts. After a brief reminder of the H.E.S.S. instrument, the performance tests to calibrate the new electronics used for the modernization of the four cameras CT1-4 telescopes are presented. The analysis of the upgraded camera raw data shows a reduction global array dead time allowing to maximize the benefit of the stereoscopy between the 5 telescopes. The second part of the thesis deals with 10 years of observations of the Galactic Center region with H.E.S.S. and recent observations taken with the 28-meter-diameter telescope (CT5) located at the center of the array. The data analysis towards the central source HESS J1745-290 provides access to events at lower energies (100 GeV). The spectrum of the central source is in very good agreement with the one of HESS J1745-290 measured with CT1-4 and data below 150 GeV enable to connect it to the Fermi 3FGHL J1745.6-2859c source spectrum. In the third part, the 10 years of data in the region of the Galactic Centre with the first phase of H.E.S.S. are scanned for a dark matter annihilation signal using a likelihood method using the spectral and spatial characteristics of the dark matter signal compared to background. No dark matter signal is detected. The constraints are calculated on the annihilation cross section and, for the first time, a ground-based Cherenkov telescope array is capable to probe the thermal cross section in the case of a cuspy dark matter profile. The sensitivity of the annihilation cross section of the H.E.S.S. instrument using CT5 is then presented toward the Galactic Center and the recently discovered dwarf galaxy Reticulum II. The last part of the thesis studies the potential of the future ground-based instrument CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) for the detection of dark matter annihilation signal. Towards the Galactic Center region, the expected dark matter signal is significantly increased by the contribution of gamma rays produced by inverse Compton process of energetic electrons and positrons on ambient radiation fields. The sensitivity obtained enables CTA to probe the thermal cross section in all annihilation channels for a cuspy dark matter profile. The impact on CTA sensitivity of systematic errors and diffuse emission measured by Fermi is also shown. In the case of dwarf galaxy satellites of the Milky Way, the CTA performances enable to consider them as extended objects and provide a competitive sensitivity with the Galactic Centre sensitivity for a kpc-core profile. In the case of a line signal, CTA will be able to strongly constrain specific TeV dark matter models through the Sommerfeld effect, as Wino and MDM-5plet.

Measurement of spectral cut-offs of the active galactic nucleus MRK 421 with Veritas

Welsing, Roman 27 January 2015 (has links)
VERITAS, an array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, is capable of measuring spectra of very-high-energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays with high precision. On the basis of these spectra, conclusions can be drawn about the acceleration mechanisms in gamma-ray sources. For instance, spectral cut-offs can indicate that there is a maximal energy available in the source. In this work, 108 h of VERITAS data on the blazar Markarian 421 have been analysed by means of an implementation of a Forward Folding algorithm. By Forward Folding the complete instrument response function, factors including energy resolution and bias can be taken into account in the energy reconstruction. In particular, this method facilitates significant detections of spectral features, such as an exponential cut-off, and additionally, the spectral parameters can be determined with great accuracy. A dependence of the spectral index on the flux level of Markarian 421 could be detected with a significance of > 3 Sigma. This dependence was interpreted as a shift of the peak energy of Inverse Compton emission to higher energies. Besides the application of Forward Folding to data of Markarian 421, the potential to detect exponential cut-offs with VERITAS and CTA, the next generation ground based gamma-ray observatory, with this method was investigated. This study shows the influence of the energy resolution on the sensitivity of the instrument to spectral cut-offs. This sensitivity has been quantified for various cut-off energies.

TAIGA-HiSCORE: a new wide-angle air Cherenkov detector for multi-TeV gamma-astronomy and cosmic ray physics

Porelli, Andrea 31 July 2020 (has links)
The TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) detector is a new ground-based Cherenkov detection technology for gamma-astronomy from 10TeV up to several PeV, and cosmic rays (CR) above 100TeV. The main topic of this work is TAIGA-HiSCORE, the wide-aperture air Cherenkov timing array. The focus is on precision extensive air shower (EAS) arrival direction reconstruction, achieved by (1) sub-nsec time-synchronization between the array stations, and (2) a newly developed array time calibration procedure. The performance is verified using simulated and experimental data from EAS, dedicated LED calibration, and a LIDAR laser beam from the International Space Station (ISS). The analysis of the HiSCORE 9 data (2013-14), collected with a data acquisition system (DAQ) based on the White Rabbit (WR) timing system, allows to verify the sub-nsec time synchronization between the array stations. The analysis of HiSCORE 28 data (2015-2018) addresses the problem of achieving an easy-to-perform time calibration for large area ground-based Cherenkov array. A new "hybrid" calibration method is developed, which makes use of EAS data, and requires direct LED calibration of only a few array stations. The "chessboard" method is applied on the reconstructed data to obtain a MC-independent estimation of the detector angular resolution, found to be 0.4° at threshold (~50TeV) and <= 0.2° above 100TeV. A serendipitous discovery was made in this work: a signal from the CATS-LIDAR on-board the ISS was found in the HiSCORE 28 data. These "ISS-events" are used to verify the detector performance, in particular the absolute angular pointing (<= 0.1°), particularly important since a strong gamma point source has not yet been detected by the TAIGA-HiSCORE. The final part of the work presents a first preliminary approach to a wide aperture point source analysis, developed for the TAIGA-HiSCORE in stand-alone operation.
