Aesthetics of Womanhood in Heian Japan

This study acts as a response to questions surrounding the position of women in the Heian court as encountered by earlier scholars. To that end this study examines the construction of the Heian concept of femininity with regard to both women of the lady-waiting and elite classes, as illustrated in diaries and court records. The findings indicate that the aesthetic of womanhood oftentimes related to an ideal of female passivity in romantic relations with men and of selflessness in involvement in major court decisions. This aesthetic was physically manifested in the attention given to the sequestration of women of high rank. However, evidence suggests that this aesthetic did not mean that women were not influential, in part because this aesthetic was an ideal that did not necessarily reflect reality.

The Eye in Lermontov’s "A Hero of Our Time": Perception, Visuality, and Gender Relations

This thesis views Lermontov’s novel "A Hero of Our Time" as centered on images, glances and vision. In his text Lermontov conveys a persistent fascination with visual perception. The attentive reader can read this language of the eye—the eye can be seen as a mirror of the soul, a fetish, a means of control, and a metaphor for knowledge. The texts that form the novel are linked together by a shared preoccupation with the eye. At the same time, these texts explore the theme of visual perception from different angles, and even present us with different attitudes towards vision. Some are guided by literature, some—by science and physiognomy, and some—by spiritualism and imagination. Since imagination—the lack of it and more often an excess of it—is a persistent motif of the novel, this thesis also explores metaphorical blindness in "A Hero of Our Time."

Rhetoric, gender, weakness, and shame : Paul's somatic self-presentation in the Corinthian correspondence

The apostle Paul's presentation of his own physical body within the Corinthian correspondence functions as a gender-nuanced argument for authoritative leadership that mirrors the humiliated and shameful glory of the crucified Christ. Paul is committed to exercising his authority only in keeping with weakness, lack of rhetorical power, and feminized shame. He boasts that his own servile and feminizing sufferings are patterned after those of Christ. Even the apostle's apparently glorious experiences are accompanied by the infliction of suffering and the removal of an ability or right to speak. Lastly, his Sinai account demonstrates that even Paul's boast of open speech and self-disclosure is implicated in a feminizing act of unveiling his own shame and weakness. Even as he argues for his superiority to Moses on the basis of what at first glance appears to be a masculine apostolic boldness, the apostle's status is called into question. For his boldness and openness of self-presentation habitually reveal Paul to be shamefully weak and socially feminized. Paul's willing self-humiliation is predicated upon an insistence that in his body he will mirror the socially-gendered shame and weakness of the glorious and powerful crucified Christ.

<p> This study follows a year of mixed methods research that was conducted in partnership with Yoga Behind Bars and the Washington State Department of Corrections. The following study examines the utilization of yoga practices and observed trends with female inmates. While past research has produced groundbreaking work regarding the positive impact of inmate yoga practice and the noted decrease in recidivism rates and prison community conflicts (Bhushan, 1998; Landau &amp; Gross, 2008; Rucker, 2005), the nature of perceived personal transformation for participants and its practical programmatic implications have not been extensively researched, particularly in the case of a female population. </p><p> This longitudinal study employed a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative journal entries. Results suggest that after attending five or more classes, student focus shifts from the physical benefits of the yoga practice to the practical application and improvement of interpersonal relationships, including improved interactions with corrections officers.</p><p>

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”: The Influence of Athletes and Endorsements on Race and Gender

abstract: Athletes and sports seem impervious to criticism. Sports is one of the most popular forms of entertainment within popular culture. Since popular culture is one of the dominant forms of education, it is important to analyze and recognize the ideologies present. How do the images and portrayals of professional athletes in still images and video endorsements reflect and perpetuate hegemonic ideologies of race and gender? How do these portrayals intersect with issues of justice and representation? By using a cultural studies framework with emphasis on representation of race and gender in popular culture, an analysis of the representation of seven athletes in advertising for endorsements was conducted. The seven athletes were chosen based on name-recognition, popularity, success in their sport, and a need for a diversity of races and gender. Using semiotics, the advertisements were coded and themes were presented. Several themes presented in the advertisements: Including (1) white female athletes are presented as sexualized objects, (2) black female athletes are represented using masculine traits, (3) white male athletes are normalized, and (4) black male athletes are presented as successful because of their bodies. These representations are harmful because they do little to nothing to change dominant ideologies. Transgender Experiences Beyond the Binary: A Phenomenological Study of Arizonans with Non-Binary Gender Identities

abstract: This phenomenological study explores the question: What are the lived experiences of Arizonans who identify their gender identities as ‘non-binary’? (‘non-binary’ defined here as anyone who identifies their gender as something other than ‘always and exclusively male or always and exclusively female’). The study explores the lived realities of four non-binary identified transgender people living in Arizona. Each participant took a short survey and conducted a 45-minute in-person interview, conducted through phenomenological questioning to evoke deep descriptions of experience. After analyzing the results through feminist hermeneutic phenomenology, this study suggests that the experience of non-binary gender identity presents an essential pattern of cultivating self-realization. The essential themes of internal recognition, external presentation, and movement toward wellness fell into this pattern. The United States has conceptualized transgender identity in many ways, from pathologizing to politicizing, to medically affirming views. Although the literature on this topic is quite small, there is no doubt that non-binary transgender people exist in U.S. public life. Studying the Phenomenon of Expressive Arts with Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

<p> Male childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a traumatic experience that is prevalent, under-reported, and under-treated. CSA leaves males with feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and interpersonal problems, which put them at risk of developing mental health disorders that persist into adulthood. Although expressive arts therapy has been used as a treatment for trauma in children and adolescents, existing literature on the use of expressive arts with adult CSA survivors is limited to female survivors. The current study aims to explore the experiences of male CSA survivors who have participated in expressive arts therapy, including the effects that expressive arts has on their sense of self, relationships, and trauma symptoms. Participants (<i>N</i> = 8) were recruited from the Greater Los Angeles area, and included in the study if they were male CSA survivors and had previously been in expressive arts therapy. A mixed-methods approach was used, using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as the primary research approach, which generated emergent themes that were supported with concurrent measures, including the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 and a demographics measure. Results suggested that male survivors perceived expressive arts to be a positive experience and useful tool in the therapeutic process. The study provided exploratory findings on the use of expressive arts as a way for male survivors to release emotions, find their voice, rediscover their self, reconnect interpersonally with others, and facilitate a sense of empowerment. Results also suggested that male survivors perceive judgment and limited art modalities to be negative experiences in expressive arts therapy. Since the sample included primarily ethnic minority men, this study also provided contributions to the literature on the use of expressive arts with ethnic minority male survivors. Due to these findings, it is recommended that further research be conducted on the use of expressive arts with male survivors.</p><p>

The thesis deals with gender analysis of New exercise book of the German grammar by Doris Dusilova et. al. The first chapter introduces basic sociological terminology. In the second chapter, gender stereotypic verbal expressions are discussed. The theoretical part of the thesis is concluded with the discussion on gender problematic in educational environment and with the compilation of basic rules for gender-aware teaching. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of diverse life situations focusing on the feminin/masculine standpoint. Among others, professional life, household care, free-time activities and appearance loci are investigated. Practical part of the thesis features a questionnaire adopted in a survey of several elementary schools and secondary schools. The survey was designed in order to validate whether the understanding of common social situations reflects gender-stereotypic beliefs. Finally, the summary of conclusions is provided, derived from the survey and situation analysis.

In general the Stereotypes and the Definition of Women in Mass Media is divided into two plains that are connected in an analytic manner. The first plain is represented by the problem of gender (in particular the relation of gender and media), the second the definition of situation and the creation of topic via mass media. The work itself targets in particular the definition and reproduction of women stereotype in mass communicated messages. The whole of the work is written theoretically {--} empiric. In addition to studying conclusions of other authors, that work in this field of study, the work is also compiled by empiric surveys. In addition to the analysis of the stereotype of women in mass media communication, the work also concentrates on the ammount of stereotypes of women accepted and or condemned respectively the ammount of stereotypes, according to society (in particular according to sex), correspond or do not correspond with reality.
