Adlerian GenogramsBitter, James Robert 17 July 2017 (has links)
Genograms were a process developed by Monica McGoldrick to help people explore the structure and emotions of their families of origin. Adler and Adlerians bring a special understanding to the meanings contained within genograms, focusing on relational processes that shape our lives. This experiential course teaches people how to use and understand Adlerian genograms for both personal growth and therapeutic practice.

Naked truth: a glimpse into the lives and experiences of exotic dancersTillier, Rachel Joanne 08 1900 (has links)
This research explores the lives and experiences of female exotic dancers with the aim of
gaining an empathic understanding of their involvement in the stripping industry. The
stereotypes and generalizations of exotic dancers and the stripping industry undermine
the exotic dancer's ability to be seen as an individual with her own story and her own
experiences. The participants of this research were selected through convenience
sampling and consist of three female exotic dancers. The researcher interviewed the
participants using a semi-structured interview format and focused on the dancer's
experience within the exotic dancing industry, her family history, her relationships, and
personal life. The data was analysed using thematic network analysis. The thematic
networks are often contradictory and inconsistent with the common stereotypes and ideas
held about exotic dancers. The results indicate that some exotic dancers experience
meaning, healing, gratification, and power within their work and live responsible,
productive lives. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

A family systems analysis of child murderersPillay, Karolyn 03 1900 (has links)
For decades there has been growing interest into the crime of child murders. Emphasis was placed on victims and those at risk. Not much focus was placed on perpetrators and their families. Evidence suggests that the family and social systems play a vital role in determining adult violent behaviour. This qualitative study aims to explore the experiences of convicted child murderers in their family and social system. Data was collected and analysed, using genogram interviews and analysis. Themes were highlighted using hermeneutic thematic analysis, within a post-modern paradigm. Results were presented in the form of genogram analysis and thematic content analysis. Prominent themes that arose were separation, rejection, abuse, neglect and substance abuse. These life experiences together with poor education are some of the characteristics that may have contributed to the child murderers actions towards children. / Psychology / M. A. Metaphoric Generative Genograms: A Journey to bring Genograms to life through metaphorical componentsGarcia, Elisa 01 January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a greater understanding of the potential of genograms through my clinical work from a Bowen Family Systems lens. I account for how I processed and effectively blended metaphorical components, by examining six cases from my two-year journal entries, of bringing genograms to life in sessions. I also explain how I created a useful tool, the Metaphoric Generative Genogram, that can benefit other clinicians working with children and families in the foster care community.

Substance abuse among male adolescentsMohasoa, Irene Patience 02 1900 (has links)
Adolescent substance abuse is a major problem facing the world today. In order to understand the
reasons for adolescent substance abuse behaviour, various theoretical perspectives were utilised
and strategies to curb substance use were also identified. The study was conducted in the rural
areas of Zeerust, North West province of South Africa. The participants included 12 male
adolescents, whose ages ranged from 12 to 15 years. A qualitative, explorative research design
was employed. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews, genograms and observations.
Thematic analysis was used to analyse audio-taped data. The study found that substances abused
by the participants include alcohol, nicotine, cannabis and heroin. Their reasons for using these
substances include individual, family and environmental factors. However, peer group pressure
was identified as the primary factor for adolescent substance use. This study emphasises the
painful nature of substance abuse among adolescents, yet at the same time it succeeds in
highlighting the strategies that can be employed to address substance abuse among adolescents.
In addition, this study recommends a concerted effort by all the stakeholders in addressing the
substance abuse problem. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)
