Previous issue date: 2005-05-25 / This work had as objective to characterize the use forms and occupation of
Cascavel River basin, looking for to bring a diagnosis of the use and urban
occupation in the basin, being used techniques of remote sensoriamento and
geographical information system, with the use of satellite image TM/Landsat of
the year of 2002, official registers about the occupation of the same, trying to
establish a prognostic of the current environmental condition of the basin. They
were diagnosed the system of garbage collection, varrição system, sewerage
system system, system of gallery of pluvial water, existent paving in the urban
area and the evolution of the divisions into lots in the urban area. In the rural
area, the use of the soil was diagnosed, identifying the vegetation, culture and
nude soil. The analyses of the results showed that the basin presents risks
geoambientais and that the tendency of occupation of the soil and the
demographic growth, they generated areas potentially problems once the
disordered occupation of the physical middle caused the degradation of the
natural resources of the soil, of the vegetation and they contributed considerably
for to deterioration of the resources hidrics. / Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar as formas de uso e ocupação da
bacia hidrográfica do Rio Cascavel, buscando elaborar um diagnóstico do uso e
ocupação urbana na bacia, utilizando-se de técnicas de sensoriamento remoto e
sistema de informações geográficas, com a utilização de imagens do satélite
TM/Landsat do ano de 2002, cadastros oficiais sobre a sua ocupação e
procurando estabelecer um prognóstico da condição ambiental atual. Foram
diagnosticados o sistema de coleta de lixo, o sistema de varrição, o sistema de
redes de esgotos, sistema de galerias de águas pluviais, pavimentação existente
na área urbana e a evolução dos loteamentos na área urbana da bacia. Na área
rural, diagnosticou-se o uso do solo, identificando-se a vegetação, cultura e solo
desnudo. A análise dos resultados mostrou que a bacia apresenta riscos
geoambientais e que a tendência de ocupação do solo e de crescimento
demográfico geraram áreas potencialmente problemáticas, porquanto a ocupação
desordenada do meio físico causou a degradação dos recursos naturais do solo e
da vegetação, contribuindo consideravelmente para a deterioração dos recursos hídricos.

A Arqueologia investiga os diferentes processos de constituição, funcionamento e transformação ocorridos nos sistemas sócio-culturais de populações humanas, desde os períodos mais recuados até os dias atuais. A investigação arqueológica é feita por meio de procedimentos técnicos e metodológicos já consagrados, utilizando-se da prática interdisciplinar e do aproveitamento, cada vez mais crescente, de recursos tecnológicos de domínio científico. A introdução dos sistemas de informação geográfica (SIG) como uma ferramenta de análise no âmbito da arqueologia brasileira é algo recente. A literatura mostra que em outros países o uso de tecnologia é parte da rotina, envolvendo aspectos locais, regionais e de gerenciamento do patrimônio. Neste trabalho é proposto o uso do SIG como um instrumento de devolução do conhecimento arqueológico, de modo a funcionar como um fator de inclusão social. Para isso é feito um estudo sobre os conceitos envolvidos na tecnologia de SIG e uma análise da problemática na construção de SIGs preditivos em função da precariedade da cartografia nacional. A partir deste estudo é concebido um sistema SIG/Multimídia denominado SIG Arqueologia, onde os dados do Projeto de Salvamento Arqueológico da UHE Corumbá IV (PA-SALV-C/IV) são utilizados para comprovar a eficiência da proposta. / Archeology examines different proceedings of constitution, performance and changes occurred in policies of human populations, social and cultural, since old time till this day. Archaeological search is made through consecrated technical and methodological procedures, using interdisciplinary and profiting training, increased more and more in technological resources of scientific origin. The introduction of geographical information systems (GIS) as an utensil of analysis in the field of brazilian archaeology is recent. Literature shows that in other countries the use of this technology is part of routine, involving local aspects, regional and patrimony management. In this work is proposed the use of GIS as an instrument of devolution of archeological knowledge, so to operate as a factor of social inclusion. It is made a study for this about concepts involved in GIS technology and an analysis of problematic in predicted GIS in function of precariousness of national cartography. Following this study is conceived a GIS/Multimedia system named SIG Arqueologia, were data of archeological salvation project of the UHE CORUMBÁ IV (PA-SALV-C/IV) are utilized to show the efficiency of proposal.

The importance of fisheries waste in the diet of Westland Petrels (Procellaria westlandica)Freeman, A. N. D. January 1997 (has links)
Westland petrels Procellaria westlandica breed only near Punakaiki on the West Coast
of New Zealand. About 80 km offshore from their breeding colony, New Zealand's largest commercial fishery (for hoki Macruronus novaezelandiae) operates from mid June to early September, coinciding with the Westland petrel's breeding season.
It has been assumed that Westland petrels feed extensively on fisheries waste and that
this habit has been at least partly responsible for the increase in the Westland petrel
population. Some seabird biologists have expressed concern that if a species comes to
depend on scavenging at fishing vessels, such a species could experience a food crisis if
fishing operations changed in a way that reduced the quantity of waste discharged. The aim of this research was to assess how dependent Westland petrels have become on fisheries waste for food.
Diet studies showed that during the hoki fishing season, waste accounts for more than half by weight of the solid food Westland petrels bring back to the colony to feed their chicks. After the hoki season, waste contributes only about a quarter of their diet as birds switch to more natural prey and scavenge a wider variety of fish species presumably from smaller, inshore fishing vessels.
Much of the fisheries waste eaten by Westland petrels was flesh which could not be identified using traditional techniques. The electrophoretic technique iso-electric focusing increased the number of fish samples that could be identified and consequently the diet was interpreted differently than it would have been had only traditional diet analysis been used.
The survey of Westland petrel distribution off the west coast of the South Island, found
that although hoki fishing vessels influence the distribution of Westland petrels, only a small proportion of the Westland petrel population appears to utilise this food resource at any one time.
Westland petrels were tracked at sea by VHF radio telemetry and then by satellite tracking. Satellite tracking showed that there is considerable variation in the amount of
time Westland petrels spend in the vicinity of fishing vessels. On average, satellite tracked birds spent one third of their time near vessels, but they foraged over much larger areas than that occupied by the West Coast South Island hoki fishing fleet.
Although fisheries waste is an important component of the Westland petrel diet, it appears that the situation is one of opportunistic use of a readily available resource, rather than one of dependence. Several features of the Westland petrel's breeding biology and foraging ecology suggest that Westland petrels could compensate for a reduction in waste from the hoki fishery by switching to other sources of waste and
increasing their consumption of natural prey.
Nevertheless, much remains unanswered concerning the role of fisheries waste in the Westland petrel's diet. In particular, quantifying the waste available to seabirds, and the
success of Westland petrels in acquiring that waste compared to other scavenging species, is needed in order to better predict the effect of a reduction in fisheries waste on Westland petrel population size.

Wetland planning in agricultural landscape using Geographical Information System : A case study of Lake Ringsjön basin in South SwedenOlszewska, Dorota Olga January 2005 (has links)
<p>The problem of increasing eutrophication encouraged the Baltic States to implement new measures, which would help to decrease the nutrient load into the Baltic Sea. Constructed wetlands are considered as one of the possible solutions to the problem of nutrient leakage from agricultural areas in Sweden.</p><p>The aim of this study was to identify the best wetland locations in the Lake Ringsjön basin (in southern Sweden, Scania) using Land Score System (LSS) based on Geographic Information System (GIS). The required area of wetland was calculated on the base of average daily discharge in the whole basin. Next, the possible wetland sites were compared with the location of major nitrogen leakage sources (municipalities, and agriculture). The scenario, which came out from the implemented model (the wetland area required for each sub basin in the Lake Ringsjön basin), was compared to the two scenarios investigated by Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), where wetlands covered 0,4 and 2% of the total cropland area in the Lake Ringsjön basin.</p><p>The result shows that the second SMHI’s scenario relates in some sub basins to the required wetland area calculated in my model. However, in some cases the wetland area seems to be underestimated.</p>

Multicriteria analysis and GIS application in the selection of sustainable motorway corridorBelka, Kamila January 2005 (has links)
<p>Effects of functioning transportation infrastructure are receiving more and more environmental and social concern nowadays. Nevertheless, preliminary corridor plans are usually developed on the basis of technical and economic criteria exclusively. By the time of environmental impact assessment (EIA), which succeeds, relocation is practically impossible and only preventative measures can be applied.</p><p>This paper proposes a GIS-based method of delimiting motorway corridor and integrating social, environmental and economic factors into the early stages of planning. Multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques are used to assess all possible alternatives. GIS-held weighted shortest path algorithm enables to locate the corridor. The evaluation criteria are exemplary. They include nature conservation, buildings, forests and agricultural resources, and soils. Resulting evaluation surface is divided into a grid of cells, which are assigned suitability scores derived from all evaluation criteria. Subsequently, a set of adjacent cells connecting two pre-specified points is traced by the least-cost path algorithm. The best alternative has a lowest total value of suitability scores.</p><p>As a result, the proposed motorway corridor is routed from origin to destination. It is afterwards compared with an alternative derived by traditional planning procedures. Concluding remarks are that the location criteria need to be adjusted to meet construction</p><p>requirements as well as analysis process to be automated. Nevertheless, the geographic information system and the embedded shortest path algorithm proved to be well suited for preliminary corridor location analysis. Future research directions are sketched.</p>

<p>Waste management is a global environmental issue which concerns about a very significant problem in today’s world. There is a considerable amount of disposal of waste without proper segregation which has lead to both economic and environment sufferings. It is still practiced in many cities. There is a tremendous amount of loss in terms of environmental degradation, health hazards and economic descend due to direct disposal of waste. It is better to segregate the waste at the initial stages where it is generated, rather than going for a later option which is inconvenient and expensive. There has to be appropriate planning for proper waste management by means of analysis of the waste situation of the area.</p><p>This paper would deal with, how Geographical Information System can be used as a decision support tool for planning waste management. A model is designed for the case study area in an Indian city for the purpose of planning waste management. The suggestions for amendments in the system through GIS based model would reduce the waste management workload to some extent and exhibit remedies for some of the SWM problems in the case study area. The waste management issues are considered to solve some of the present situation problems like proper allocation and relocation of waste bins, check for unsuitability and proximity convenience due to waste bin to the users, proposal of recyclable waste bins for the required areas and future suggestions. The model will be implemented on the Aurangabad city’s case study area data for the analysis and the results will suggest some modification in the existing system which is expected to reduce the waste management workload to a certain extent.</p>

The application has been developed with the latest mapping server technology provided by Environmental Science Research Institute’s ArcIMS 9.1. GIS Based Study of Probable Causes of Increase in Cancer Incidences in Iraq After Gulf War 1991Muhammad, Hassan January 2006 (has links)
<p>The use of banned toxic weapons in Iraq during Gulf War 1991 started new debates. The increase in cancer cases was the main focus of these issues. The gap in literature motivated this study to find out the correlation between use of DU weapons and its effects on human health. The different probable causes of increase in cancer cases, in Iraq after Gulf War 1991, have been discussed in this study. Three causes; DU, brick kilns smoke near Basra and Kuwait oil fire smoke have been selected. The major emphasis of this study is on use of Depleted Uranium (DU). Different statistical data sets have been used and displayed in the form of maps and graphs using GIS methodologies. It’s hard to say after this GIS based study that the fired Depleted Uranium is the sole cause of increase in cancer incidences in Iraq, while some trends and risk factors at least can be observed where increase in cancer cases in different Governorates in Iraq is clearly visible after Gulf War 1991. After analyzing satellite images of different dates, the second part of this study concludes that Kuwait oil wells smoke is not responsible for increase in cancer incidences in Iraq. A small debate has been initiated regarding smoke in brick kilns near Basra. No study has been found in this regard which can provide evidences that brick kilns smoke is the cause of increase in cancer incidences in southern Iraq.</p><p>It’s not easy to carry out a full fledge GIS based study to prove DU as cause of increase in cancer cases. The main limitation in this regard is unavailability of required data. Therefore a new GIS based methodology has been devised which can be used to prove relationship between exposure to DU and increase in cancer cases in Iraq. This new methodology is also dependent on specific data sets. Hence this methodology also recommends the collection of specific data sets required for this study.</p><p>At the end, a detailed study, with honesty, has been suggested to fill up the gaps found in literature whether use of Depleted Uranium in weapons is harmful for human health or not.</p>

<p>This thesis presents Pixgis; a novel application for map-centric management of photographs. In short Pixgis is an interactive environment in which photographs may be discovered, viewed and managed through maps. With Pixgis finding photographs from a specific location or of a particular structure is as easy as finding the location or structure on a map. As Pixgis simultaneously displays maps, photographs and spatial metadata it also enables users to analyze photographs in new manners. This thesis work illustrates the benefits of applications for map-centric management of photographs, exposes the problems one faces when implementing such applications and presents novel solutions to many of these problems. The thesis also elaborates on spatial metadata and methods for acquisition of photographs with embedded spatial metadata.</p>

Malignancies in Sweden after the Chernobyl accident in 1986Tondel, Martin January 2007 (has links)
On 26 April 1986 an accident occurred in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant resulting in the release of large amount of radionuclides. Almost five percent of the total released caesium-137 was deposited in Sweden. The incidence of malignancies in the most affected counties in Sweden was investigated in three epidemiological studies. In the first study the incidence of malignancies in children and adolescents was studied for the period 1978-1992. The parishes and their inhabitants were classified according to the ground deposition of caesium-137 on an analogue map provided be the Swedish Radiological Protection Authority. A continuous increase of brain tumour incidence observed during the time of the study had no clear relationship to the Chernobyl fallout. A somewhat decreased relative risk of ALL was observed in areas with increased deposition. Other malignancies showed no changes in incidence over time or with regard to the exposure of caesium-137. In study II and III we enlarged the study base by including adults. We improved the methodology by defining a cohort of subjects who lived in the same parish from 31 December 1985 to 31 December 1987. The inhabitants from seven counties were included. Parishes were classified the same way as in study I. Due to the large number of individuals six exposure categories could be created; <3, 3–29, 30–39, 40–59, 60–79, and 80–120 kBq caesium-137/m2. The inhabitants of the 117 non-affected parishes (<3 kBq/m2) served as reference. During the 1988-1996 followup, 22,409 malignancies were recorded. The MH-IRR in the fully adjusted model was 1.00 (reference), 1.05, 1.03, 1.08, 1.10 and 1.21, respectively. ERR was 0.11 per 100 kBq/m2 (95% CL 0.03;0.20). A more advanced method was used in Study III by ignoring the exposure classification for parishes, and instead matching the dwelling coordinate to a digital map of deposition of casesium-137. In spite of a more valid exposure classification the risk estimates were similar in study II and III. Also, the ERR during the longer follow-up of 1988-1999 was almost identical, 0.10 per 100 kBq/m2 (95% CL 0.00;0.23). The strongest dose-response relationship was seen in the first four years (1988-1991). No obvious excess for leukaemia or thyroid cancer was recognised in either study II or III. The estimated number of exposure related cases was calculated to 849 in study II and 1,278 in study III. Our interpretation is that we have shown an increased incidence of total malignancies with dose-response relationship for caesium-137, only a few years after the Chernobyl accident. In study IV we compared the two different ways of classifying the exposure in study II and III. Out of the 450 parishes 111 got a different classification. The similar risk estimates in study II and III could probably be explained by relatively homogenous exposure in the parishes making the intra-parish difference less influential, especially when included in categories. In study V we examined the urinary excretion of 8-OHdG in Belarussian children from areas with high and low fallout of caesium-137, respectively. We found significantly lower urinary 8-OHdG levels in children from rural contaminated areas compared to urban uncontaminated areas, suggesting an urban, rather than a radiation related, risk factor. Using the Hill criteria for causality there is support for a causal inference between the fallout of caesium-137 from the Chernobyl accident and the increased incidence in total malignancies in Northern Sweden.
