Coping strategies of church-going adolescents in Durban / Sarah M. ChamberlainChamberlain, Sarah M January 2014 (has links)
Adolescents face many challenges in their communities, families and individually during the
complex developmental stage of adolescence. It is during this time that their sense of self and an
identity apart from their parents become more strongly developed and they become more
autonomous. As adolescents separate more and more from their parents they move progressively
towards their peer relationships, which is an important part of identity formation. However, during
this period they are exposed to many healthy and unhealthy influences in the community, especially
when engaging with their peers and other social structures outside of the family. During childhood
they were less likely to engage in undesirable or risk behaviour for fear of disapproval and rejection
from their parents but during adolescence there is a strong need for approval from their peers, who
might engage in and encourage risk behaviour. Effective coping strategies can be an important
protective factor aiding them in making the right choices and decisions and resisting peer pressure.
Previously, many models of adolescent coping have been taken from coping studies done with
adults, which have not accounted for the developmental differences between adults and adolescents.
Now as literature on coping with regards to adolescence is growing, the studies often ignore
religious coping strategies and their potential impact on functioning. Yet, recent data suggests that
religious behaviour and beliefs have a protective influence that moderates the impact of adverse
interpersonal life events and social adversity as well as physical and mental health. Thus, this
qualitative study applied case study methods to explore and describe the different coping strategies
used by a group of church-going adolescents from branches of a non-denominational church in
Durban. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the North-West University and informed
consent was obtained from the parents and the adolescent minors before they participated in the
study. Data was collected using a visual representation technique, two individual interviews and a
focus group discussion with twelve participants. The data was analysed using thematic analysis and
three main themes and various subthemes emerged. The first theme was understanding of coping as
indicated by participants while the second theme identified the sources of their coping strategies and
the third theme involved their specific coping strategies, which included religion, leisure activities, physical coping, social support systems, creativity and behaviour. These findings provide a greater
understanding of the coping strategies and modalities used by church-going adolescents. / MA (Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

The influence of the theology of John Chrysostom on the writings of John Henry NewmanWadsworth, Andrew Raymond 02 1900 (has links)
Summaries and keywords in English and Afrikaans / John Henry Newman maak in sy outobiografiese geskrifte 'n aantal belangrike verwysings na
In Newman se geestelike begeleiding,
Behalwe enkele teologiese ooreenkomste
John Henry Newman makes a number of significant references in his autobiographical writings
to his devotion to John Chrysostom. Is this simply a matter of piety, or does it reveal a deeper
connection to the point that Newman is influenced in his own theological understanding,
spiritual insight, and pastoral practice by Chrysostom? This thesis attempts to demonstrate that
Newman’s very particular preparation for reading the Fathers, and in particular, his
comprehensive grasp of Greek, orientated him, from an early age, towards an immersion in
Patristic thought, a fact largely demonstrated by his Letters and Diaries. Citation of
Chrysostom as a theological authority, in Newman’s doctrinal writings, and in his published
preaching, becomes increasingly evident, and demonstrates what might be considered
theological characteristics the two theologians hold in common. In Newman’s spiritual
direction, particularly in his spiritual accompaniment and guidance of women, there appears to
be a correlation with advice given by Chrysostom in similar circumstances; in the present study this is treated in a comparison of the letters of Chrysostom to Olympias, and Newman’s
correspondence with Maria Giberne. Beyond any theological similarities, and influences both
explicit and implicit, there is evidence that Newman saw in Chrysostom someone very similar
to himself: a profound theological thinker, who rose to prominence as a result of his preaching,
and who met with serious institutional opposition expressed in a deeply personal way, suffered
a considerable amount of loss as a result of holding to his convictions, and yet remained
undeterred in his fidelity to what he understood to be his mission, as a priest, a theologian, a
teacher and a pastor. / New Testament / D. Litt. et Phil. (Biblical Studies)

This dissertation considers the composition of a sex
education program for schools in South Africa.
Rapidly changing social structure within society and the exposure of the youth to foreign cultural
and religious ideas necessitate the urgency of sex education.
Sex education is presented from different value systems. The conclusion reached is that values must
be an integral part of the sex education program. The child must be accompanied to
responsible sexual adulthood by means of educationally accountable principles in order that he/she
may be able to withstand the demoralizing influences from society effectively.
The parents are the appropriate sex educators of their
children but, due to their being unconcerned the school accepted this responsibility. It is
however of importance that the school accepts the parents as partners.
In conclusion guidelines are presented for the compiling of a sex education program. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)
