Platon : théâtre et philosophie : fondements, nature et visée de la méthode dialectique

Afin de comprendre le processus d’acquisition de connaissance chez Platon, nous proposons une étude de la dialectique selon un spectre large, en se focalisant principalement sur la nature dramatique des textes du corpus. À partir d’une analyse des fondement éléates de la méthode antilogique, nous tenterons par le biais de la dialogique (ou sémantique des jeux) de comprendre le caractère agonistique de la méthode proposée par Platon dans ses dialogues. Nous tâcherons par la suite de faire le lien entre les conclusions intermédiaires et la structure générale de la métaphysique platonicienne afin de ne pas perdre la cohérence du système pris dans sa globalité. Nous évaluerons la qualité de l’outil interprétatif obtenu à travers une lecture du Gorgias. / Abstract : In order to understand Plato’s knowledge acquisition process, we suggest a wide-range study of the dialectic, mainly focusing on the theatrical nature of his texts. From an analysis of the eleatic foundations of the antilogical method, we will try to understand the agonistic feature of the method given by Plato in his dialogs by using the dialogical logic (or game semantic). Then, we will bind our mid-conclusions and the general structure of Plato’s metaphysic; in order not to loose the coherence of the whole system. We will evaluate the quality of our interpretative tool through a reading of the Gorgias.

La retórica buena como Arte de Servicio en el Gorgias de Platón

El presente trabajo comprende un análisis del concepto de retórica en el diálogo Gorgias de Platón. Nuestra hipótesis sostiene, en primer lugar, que, a través del análisis del escrito, se puede elaborar la definición de una nueva y noble retórica como arte de servicio cuyo fundamento es filosófico. En un segundo momento, consideramos que esta, en términos dramáticos, es aplicada en algunos momentos del diálogo por el personaje Sócrates, quien brinda los elementos para definirla. Nuestro trabajo se divide en tres capítulos. El primer capítulo aborda los elementos concomitantes al surgimiento histórico de la retórica hasta llegar al estudio del planteamiento de Gorgias, el cual comprende una tensión entre dóxa y epistēmē. El segundo capítulo aborda el diálogo Gorgias a través del análisis de las tres conversaciones en que este se divide. Cada una nos brinda un marco de oposiciones que nos permiten profundizar en las dos posturas que implican los términos de la tensión señalada hasta, finalmente, encarnarse y delimitarse de manera antitética en los dos personajes que discuten al final del diálogo. El tercer capítulo, sobre la base obtenida y mediante la apelación a algunos pasajes del diálogo, alcanza tres objetivos: 1) determina la buena retórica de Sócrates como arte de servicio cuyo fin es bueno y se fundamenta filosóficamente, 2) demuestra que esta es llevada a la praxis por Sócrates en algunos momentos del diálogo y 3) concluye precisando esta actividad según una finalidad propedéutica. KNOWLEDGE OF THE GOOD: VIRTUE IN THE MENO AND PROTAGORAS

In both the Meno and the Protagoras, Plato investigates the unity, acquisition and nature of virtue (ἀρετή). Although these dialogues appear to reach opposing conclusions—the Protagoras that virtue is knowledge and the Meno that virtue is divinely dispensed true opinion—in fact they both articulate the same moral principle. Both dialogues argue that virtue is knowledge of the good. I investigate these two dialogues independently and on their own respective terms, dedicating Chapter 2 to the Protagoras and Chapter 3 to the Meno. Although both dialogues argue that virtue is knowledge of the good, neither offers an account of the good. This is because each dialogue is but a single part of a larger argument which culminates in the Republic, wherein we find a more complete explanation of knowledge of the good in the description of the philosopher-king.

The most common question that scholars ask regarding the concept of techne in the Plato dialogues is if it is possible to understand arete, morale or the good, as a techne, that is, if arete kan be viewed as a knowledge, an ability or a skill. Is arete something that can be taught? In this essay I will explore this question from a reversed viewpoint, and try the claim that techne always in itself is an excercise of arete, inasmuch as the goal of a techne has to be the good, or ”what is best”, in order for it to be a techne for Plato at all.

[pt] A interpretação do Poema de Parmênides tradicionalmente tem como fontes Platão, Aristóteles e os neoplatônicos. Recentemente as questões lógicas e filológicas relacionadas ao verbo ser vem atraindo atenção não só de comentadores da filosofia antiga como Charles Kahn, mas também da filosofia analítica a partir dos críticas de Frege e Russell. Nesta dissertação, utiliza-se como eixo interpretativo os textos de Gorgias e Melisso sobre o ser, considerando a hipótese de que como estes pensadores desenvolveram os seus trabalhos em uma época mais próxima a Parmênides do que Platão e Aristóteles as suas interpretações nos fornecem uma leitura mais aproximada do sentido inicial do Poema. A partir da apresentação dos diversos sentidos do verbo ser pela filologia e das formulações de Kahn, será investigado o ser nas formulações de Melisso, Górgias comparando-o com o ser de Parmênides. / [en] Plato, Aristotle and the Neo-Platonists have traditionally been considered to be the main sources for interpreting Parmenides The Poem. However, in the last century, the logical and filological dilemmas regarding the concept of being have begun to draw the attention of other scholars seeking more precise interpretations of The Poem, such as ancient philosophy commentator Charles Kahn and analytical philosophers Frege and Russell. In this paper I will argue that philosophers Gorgias and Melisso offer a more accurate interpretation of the concept of being discussed in Parmenides original text. Consequently, it will also be shown that in order to understand precisely The Poem, it is necessary to focus on the interpretations drawn by the two pre-Socratic philosophers supra-cited regarding the Poem, rather than to emphasize on the analysis made by Plato and Aristotle. The main reason supporting this argument that will be presented is that the works of such pre-Socratic philosophers were written in a time period much closer to the one of Parmenides than the works of Plato and Aristotle were. In order to build my argument I will first analyze the filological meanings of the concept of being. Then I will scrutinize the formulations of this concept as Kahn presents them. After that, I will examine the formulations of the concept of being in the works of both Melisso and Gorgias. Finally, I will compare and apply all of these formulations and meanings to Parmenides original text, and therefore conclude my argument.

Vers une théorie de la réceptivité du discours rhétorique

Nous entendons, par rhétorique, l'art de persuader et de convaincre, l'art de la délibération et de la discussion, l'art de bien penser et de bien dire le vraisemblable - l'eikos -, ainsi que le concevait Aristote, et non ce que l'on entend trop souvent sous ce nom. Et ce que nous proposons de montrer dans ce mémoire par un examen de l'histoire de cette conception de la rhétorique de sa naissance jusqu'à aujourd'hui - avec l'accent mis sur la rhétorique d'Aristote et la "Nouvelle rhétorique" de Chaïm Perelman -, c'est que l'apprentissage de la rhétorique peut être utile non seulement à l'orateur, mais également au récepteur (l'auditeur) d'un discours rhétorique. Autrement dit, nous allons montrer, théoriquement par notre examen de l 'histoire de la rhétorique et pratiquement par une analyse de l'Éloge d'Hélène de Gorgias, que la technique rhétorique est aussi l'art d'apprendre à écouter et à lire de manière à mieux comprendre.

L'orateur et le philosophe

La parole et la pensée ont connu une relation incertaine depuis qu'on a eu l'Idée de les séparer. Par conséquent, dans un effort de réconcilier l'un et l'autre, la thèse examine quel avantage un homme public comme l'orateur a à fréquenter le philosophe. Elle veut résoudre une opposition entre Cicéron, Platon et Aristote, où l'orateur passe de l'égal du philosophe à son contraire, à son subordonné. Après examen séparé des trois auteurs, on conclura qu'ils ont composé leur portrait de l'orateur en mariant les traits de la dialectique à ceux de la rhétorique : la parole publique de l'orateur et la parole privée du philosophe ne vont pas l'une sans l'autre. D'ailleurs, l'histoire nous montre qu'orateurs et philosophes se sont, au cours des âges, volontiers fréquentés.
