Grain size evolution of a vanadium microalloyed steel during bar rolling mill - 38MnSiV5.Valdir Anderson Silvério 20 March 2008 (has links)
Microalloyed steels are used as forging stock for many automotive parts such as crankshafts and connecting rods. Using mathematical equations describing the recrystallization kinetics and grain growth, a spreadsheet has been developed to simulate the austenitic grain size evolution during bar rolling mill schedules as a function of temperature, strain rate and time between passes. The calculated ferritic grain size was compared with samples taken from the process and physical simulation (torsion testing). Comparison between mathematical modeling and physical simulation with the plant bar rolling mill process shows that it is possible to predict the microstructural evolution and confirm the main grain refinement control mechanism as being static recrystallization, under the conditions prevailing in the plant where this study has been carried out.

Remoção e degradação de alquilbenzeno linear sulfonado de água residuária de lavanderia diluída em esgoto sanitário / Removal and degradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate of laundry wastewater diluted in sewageClara Vieira de Faria 07 April 2015 (has links)
The removal of the surfactant Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) of wastewater of a commercial laundry was studied in an EGSB (Expanded granular sludge bed). This wastewater was diluted in sewage. The useful volume of the reactor was of 1,8 L. The whole operation occurred on mesophilic conditions, to HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) was 36 hours, the upflow speed of 4 m/h and recirculation flow of 8,5 L/h. The laundry waste water was diluted until achieve 20 mg/L of LAS on the reactor feed. The system was operated in three stages. In the first operation stage water supply was used to dilute the wastewater laundry; in the second stage used a mixture of water supply and sewage for dilution of wastewater laundry and 50 % of the composition was sewage; and finally, in the last stage of operation is only used sewage as a diluent of wastewater. In the first stage was required addition of sodium bicarbonate as buffering agent. All the stages was applied COD (Chemical oxygen demand) and LAS influent 341 ± 216 mg/L and 18,8 ± 7,3 mg/L, respectively. The addition of sewage affected the surfactant removal, which on the first stage (Stage I) represented 77,2 ± 14,9 % and on the final stage (Stage III) became 55,3 ± 18,4 % of LAS removal. However, while removing of LAS decreased the COD removal increased from 57 ± 16 % to 65 ± 10 %, respectively, to Stage I and Stage III . Furthermore, due to the addition of sewage was checked an increased on the size of the grain from 3,67 ± 1,83 mm (Stage I) to 4,97 ± 1,99 mm (Stage II); and also the concentration of total solids into the reactor, from 5,79 g/L (Stage I) to 9,50 g/L (Stage III). By mass balance LAS was found a remove of 69 % of LAS, wherein 67 % were removed by degradation and 2 % by adsorption of the surfactant in the biomass. Finally, through analysis by GC/MS (gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry) 17 substances were observed in the influent and only 4 in the effluent, such as, mercaptans, hydrocarbons, amines and amides. Most of them are toxic to aquatic organisms and are present in cleaning products and personal hygiene.

Near-surface stratigraphy of till and glacifluvium near Knaften, northern Sweden : Identifying small-scale stratigraphy using ground-penetrating radarJacobson, Holger January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the study was to assess the possibilities in using ground-penetrating radar to identify small-scale stratigraphy in the upper 1 m of a soil profile and to statistically identify differences in the stratigraphic units discovered using the GPR unit. The study area is ca 15 km southwest of Lycksele near a gravel pit on the banks of Örån. It was located on top of a large (>5 m thick) glacifluvial deposit of indeterminate age overlayed by till from the latest deglaciation. The data sampled included 22 radargrams depicting a total length of >1000 m as well as soil samples from three stratigraphic units from three different trenches (9 samples in total). Visual analysis of the stratigraphy took place via trenches as well as by studying the radar images. The radar images show that three stratigraphic units can be identified clearly (ablation till, S1, a transitional layer of mixed till and glacifluvium, S2, and the underlying glacifluvium, S3) but that the border between the two lower units can be opaque at times. Field observations showed this to be due to the genesis of the topmost unit, the ablation till. Observations in the field also showed relict podsolization in a kettle in the northern part of the study area. Grain-size comparison of the three stratigraphic units identified was performed via sieving. Calculations of the weight percentage were then used for statistical analysis to identify any differences between the strata. Results show that there are differences regarding fine material (ø <0.074 mm, p=0.038), gravel (ø > 2 mm, p<0.0001) and sand (p=0.027) within these three stratigraphic units.

Access to strategic mineral resources is essential for modern industrial societies. Germany is largely dependent on imports of non-energy raw materials such as steel refiners and rare earth elements. Existing indigenous deposits have a complex geological structure with low extraction thickness in large depths. In order to use these deposits, an underground positioning and navigation system, namely UPNS4D+, as a demonstration system has to be developed for deposit exploration. As part of the developer consortium, the Institute for Mining Surveying and Geodesy of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is responsible for the utilization of the acquired data in the field of mining. According to the current work status, in this paper the solutions for rock fracture analysis and grain size analysis are presented. The partly automated grain size analysis is used for the detection of large particles and their position in a relative coordinate system.

Predicting Hardness of Friction Stir Processed 304L Stainless Steel using a Finite Element Model and a Random Forest AlgorithmMathis, Tyler Alan 01 August 2019 (has links)
Friction stir welding is an advanced welding process that is being investigated for use in many different industries. One area that has been investigated for its application is in healing critical nuclear reactor components that are developing cracks. However, friction stir welding is a complicated process and it is difficult to predict what the final properties of a set of welding parameters will be. This thesis sets forth a method using finite element analysis and a random forest model to accurately predict hardness in the welding nugget after processing. The finite element analysis code used and ALE formulation that enabled an Eulerian approach to modeling. Hardness is used as the property to estimate because of its relationship to tensile strength and grain size. The input parameters to the random forest model are temperature, cooling rate, strain rate, and RPM. Two welding parameter sets were used to train the model. The method was found to have a high level of accuracy as measured by R^2, but had greater difficulty in predicting the parameter set with higher RPM.

Ověření empirických vztahů pro výpočet hydraulické vodivosti / Assessment of empirical formulae for determining hydraulic conductivityBarenčík, Ladislav January 2016 (has links)
The main purpose of this diploma thesis is to check up and compare empirical formulae (Hazen, Slichter, Terzaghi, Beyer, Zauerbrej, Krüger, Kozeny, Zunker, Zamarin, USBR, Pavčič) for determining hydraulic conductivity, which are mostly publicated in different and dimensionally inhomogenous forms. The importance of an accurate determination of hydraulic conductivity and the derivation of a general formula for determining hydraulic conductivity are listed in the first part of this diploma thesis. Assessment methodology and empirical formulae in dimensional homogenous form are described in the following part. Evaluating and comparing of empirical formulae is mentioned in the last part. According to the results of this diploma thesis, the best empirical formula for determinig and estimating hydraulic conductivity is Hazen formula. Formula with the widest range of validity is Slichter formula.

Srovnání výsledků vsakovaní vody z polních experimentů a numerického modelování / Comparement of results from infiltration testsBlahut, Dominik January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to compare the results of water infiltration from field tests, from laboratories and from numerical modeling at two selected locations. The first objective is the search procedure and the description of both sites and its adjacent areas. Further work continues with infiltration field tests using ring infiltrometer, at first theoretically for each method, and then practically with own personal measurements in the field. Further from the collected soil samples the measurements are performed in the laboratory, first in the permeameter, and followed by the grain size distribution test, from which the hydraulic conductivity is derived by using empirical formulas. At last the numerical modeling is used and all the results are compared. In the final phase of thesis the recommendations are given for infiltration at various locations and comparsion of the infiltration methods.

Textural characterization of gold in the Björkdal gold deposit, northern Sweden.Westberg, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
The Björkdal gold deposit is located in the eastern part of the Skellefte district, northern Sweden. Twenty thin sections from four production areas in the open pit and four drifts from the underground mine were analysed for mineral association and grain size distribution of gold. In addition, the texture of gold was investigated in order to find out how that affects the recovery of gold. The overall gold grain size distribution shows an interval from very fine-grained (2 μm) to coarse grained(856 μm) while the overall median size is 7 μm. Gold from the Quartz Mountain production area displays the smallest median size of 4 μm, whereas gold from the sampled drifts at 340m- and 385m- level has the largest median size of 14 μm. Gold at grain boundary is the dominant textural mode of gold from all sampled locations and varies from 62% to 92%. This is followed by intergrown which ranges between 8% and 29%. Of the sulfides, pyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite are the most common. Galena and was also present in the samples. Gold is significantly and positively correlated with tellurium (Appendix 10.1.1), and weakly positive correlated to silver and mercury. Gold show a close association to bismuth-tellurides in the samples. Apart from native gold, which is the dominant mineral phase of gold, two additional gold-bearing tellurium minerals were detected with SEM-EDS, a Au-Te-mineral and a Ag-Au-Te-mineral. One additional bismuth-telluride mineral aside from the most commonly occurring tsumoite (BiTe) was also detected with SEM, with a elemental composition of Bi-Te-S. Liberated gold in the tailings was optically identified in two thick sections, TB1-02feb-1 and TB1-07feb-1 (Fig. 32A and B), where the flotation circuit failed to float the free gold. One grain of gold was also identified intergrown with bismuth-telluride as an inclusion in silicate (Fig. 33), where the flotation properties of the larger silicate grain likely dominated in the flotation process. This thesis highlights the importance of further quantitative analysis utilizing SEM/QEMSCAN/MLA to retrieve representative mineralogical data to benefit the mineral processing of the ore from the active mine. Keywords: Björkdal gold deposit, gold, gold-telluride, SEM, mineral association, grain size, geometallurgy.
