Estes processos tornaram os perfis susceptíveis a movimentos de massa, mostrando assim uma inter-relação entre o estudo da evolução geoquímica e mineralógica, e a estabilidade mecânica do material / On January 2011, the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state was affected by a great number of landslides. This event was called "Megadisaster". The occurrence of landslide depends on the presence of material to be mobilized due to weathering processes. This work aims to assess the geochemical and mineralogical changes in two granite weathering profiles in Córrego do Príncipe watershed (Teresópolis / RJ) related to landslides. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) were used to quantify the chemical compositions of weathering profile samples. Mineralogy was done by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and by petrography. Particle size analysis was done by sieving and laser diffraction. A multivariate statistical analysis of the data showed four groups: G1 is quite different from the other groups and is characterized by an iron-manganous material; G2 represents the material with the lower degree of weathering. The presence of plagioclase, the lack of secondary minerals, the corestones and the coarse grain size of the unconsolidated samples explain this group; G3 and G4 are fairly homogeneous. They are the most weathered samples of both profiles consisting of secondary minerals and little or no plagioclase present. The main difference between these groups is silt and clay mineralogy. The elements mobility during weathering process showed a depletion of K2O, Na2O, CaO, Rb, Ba and REE (mainly due to feldspar weathering), while SiO2, Al2O3 (due to detrital and secondary mineral growth) Fe2O3, TiO2 and MgO (due to biotite weathering) increase. This study allowed the elaboration of a geochemical, mineralogical and particle size weathering model. The production of corestones, the mobilization and concentration of elements and clay minerals acted as heterogeneities within these profiles, leaving them susceptible to landslides

[pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DA ANISOTROPIA DA TENACIDADE À FRATURA NO MODO I DE ROCHAS GRANÍTICAS / [en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ANISOTROPY OF MODE-I FRACTURE TOUGHNESS IN GRANITIC ROCK

JESSICA SANTANA PEREIRA NUNES 08 October 2021 (has links)
[en] A considerable amount of minerals and, subsequently, rocks, are anisotropic, and as such, possess physical properties that vary with direction. Considering this, the present study seeks to obtain a better understanding of the role of anisotropy in the properties of rocks. In this regard, it intends to evaluate the fracture toughness of a syenogranite, obtained from a quarry in the city of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in the state of Espirito Santo. Fracture toughness consists of an intrinsic mechanical property of rocks and indicates the resistance to the initiation or propagation of a fracture as well as the amount of energy the rock absorbs until its fracture. In order to evaluate mode I fracture toughness anisotropy, the Cracked Chevron Notched Brazilian Disc (CCNBD) test was conducted, following ISRM (1995). Twenty-five (25) samples were tested considering four (4) different orientations: short transverse, arrester, divider and a random direction (inclined). In addition, the indirect tensile strength test (Brazilian test) was also conducted, in order to characterize the samples. The test was performed on fifteen (15) samples and in three (3) different orientations: short transverse, arrester and divider. The tests and sample preparation were carried out at the Structural and Materials Laboratory (LEM-DEC), and the physical properties were obtained at the Geotechnical and Environmental Laboratory (LGMA), both located at PUC-Rio. Analyzing the results obtained for fracture toughness of granitic rocks in different cutting directions, little anisotropy was found in the studied rock.

Etats de surface et fonctionnement hydrodynamique multi-échelles des bassins sahéliens ; études expérimentales en zones cristalline et sédimentaire / Soil surface features and hydrodynamical multi-scales behaviour of sahelian basins ; experimental studies in crystalline and sedimentary zones

Malam Abdou, Moussa 21 February 2014 (has links)
This work aims at characterizing and comparing the hydrodynamical functioning at several spatial scales within the granitic-basement and sedimentary zones of Western Niger. Then, a simple hydrological model that could be suitable for use at larger scales is proposed and tested.Qualitatively, the two geological domains have common and specific surface features. The experimental work carried out onto common surface features (biological crust, BIOL; erosion crust, ERO; fallow structural surface, ST and cultivated, C) shows that, at the point scale, ERO has the same hydraulic conductivity K value in both contexts. On the other hand, surfaces features C and especially ST have lower K values in granitic context.Monitoring of the ST and C sites along the rainy season proved the stationarity of the ST conductivity value. On the contrary, K varies widely with the amount of rain received from an initial value of 170 mm/h after weeding down to 20 mm/h (i.e. the ST measured value) after 70 mm of rain and even 10 mm/h after 180 mm of rain. This variation shows the short-term benefit of weeding onto infiltration but a degradation of the soil surface on the long term.At the plot scale (10 m2), runoff measurements are consistent with point measurements. ERO has the same runoff coefficient (Kr) in granitic and sedimentary zones while ST and C surfaces have a higher Kr in granitic context.Runoff monitoring of the granitic site cultivated plots showed that from a total of 63 rain events between 2011 and 2013, 22 had a Kr value higher than the average value (0.25) from which 2/3 are observed after the surface had received more than 70 mm rain after weeding. Results obtained at the two scales (point and 10-m2 plot) are thus consistent and show that the cultivated surface gets crusted and may produce runoff more than fallow ST sites and as much as ERO features. At the basin scale (5 ha), Kr values are higher in the granitic site, not only because of the higher Kr value for a given surface feature but also because of the specific low-infiltrating surfaces which are granite outcrops and gravel crusts (Kr = 0.58).At the three previous scales (point, plot and small basin), runoff volume was found independent of soil initial moisture.Using the previous point-scale results in a Green-Ampt infiltration model led to calibrate the wetting front pressure head for each surface feature and to satisfactorily describe runoff volumes obtained at the plot scale.By estimating runoff with the Green-Ampt infiltration model at any given point, basin-scale hydrograms were obtained by adding the contribution of all elementary surfaces. Assuming no re-infiltration of runoff water within the basins, a simple transfer function was chosen accounting for the distance of each surface to the hydrological network, a constant water velocity of 0.05 m.s-1 and a volume of 3-4 mm of water necessary to fill the kori sand cover, which is much less than that in the sedimentary context. Finally, simulated hydrograms reproduce nicely the measured ones, which offers the perspective of applying some principles of the model to larger basins.

Mineralogisk-mineralkemisk karakterisering av Nb-Ta-förande associationer från Kolsvapegmatiten, Bergslagen / Mineralogical and mineral chemical characterisation of Nb-Ta-bearing assemblages from the Kolsva pegmatite, Bergslagen

Viitamäki, Andreas January 2020 (has links)
The two chemically related metals niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) are classified by the European Commission as critical raw materials. This is due to a highly increased demand and a limited global supply situation for these metals. This work is a part of a larger project run by EuroGeoSurveys (EGS); the GeoERA FRAME, which aims to map the distribution of critical raw materials in the EU. Two granitic pegmatite samples from the Kolsva feldspar mine were studied with regards to their chemistry and mineralogy. They had been tentatively identified as consisting of a columbite mineral and a samarskite-like mineral, respectively. In the project, three main analytical methods have been used: 1) optical microscopy, 2) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and 3) powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The analyses performed on the “columbite samples” indicated that most of them were columbite-(Fe), general formula AB2O6, with an iron dominance in the A-cation position and niobium dominance in the B-cation position. The analyses also indicated the presence of minerals belonging to the pyrochlore supergroup. The analyses of the samarskite-like minerals yielded results showing a partial resemblance to the samarskite group minerals (general formula ABO4), but with a high degree of metamictisation, poor stoichiometries, low to very low REE contents, variable iron and calcium-dominance in a tentative A-cation position and niobium-dominance in the B-cation position. Aluminium silicates, minerals from the spinel group and hematite were also observed in this assemblage. Fracturing of the brittle, metamict samarskite-like minerals have enabled a fluid-mediated alteration, which a.o. led to the formation of secondary radiogenic galena. The study confirms that the Kolsva pegmatite represents a locally Nb-Ta mineralised system.

Henriksson, Jens January 2019 (has links)
Abstract Mineralogical-mineral chemical characterisation of Nb-Ta-bearingassemblages from the Stripåsen granitic pegmatite, NorbergJens Henriksson The occurrence of Nb-Ta-bearing minerals has earlier been briefly documented inthe Stripåsen granitic pegmatite, Norberg, central Bergslagen. This report describesthe background, preparation and basic characterisation of sampled Nb-Ta-bearingmineral assemblages from this pegmatite. These comprise (Y,REE,U,Th)-(Nb,Ta,Ti)-oxides of mainly a tantalum-dominated A 2-m B 2 X 6-w Y 1-n -type, belonging to the pyrochloresupergroup. The major primary mineral is suggested to have been afluorcalciomicrolite, ideally (Ca,Na,☐) 2 Ta 2 O 6 F. In association with abundant fractureformation related to metamictisation of the microlite minerals, they are interpreted tohave been variably altered by late-stage fluids. Thus, the system has beenextensively modified after the primary crystallisation of the pegmatite melt. Besidesthese (Y,REE,U,Th)-(Nb,Ta,Ti)-oxides, monazite-(Ce) ((Ce, LREE)PO 4 ), nativebismuth (Bi) and presumably radiogenic galena (PbS) were identified. The sampleshave mainly been studied by means of scanning-electron-microscopy with energydispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), utilising reflected polarised light microscopy asa complementary tool. The study was done within the framework of the EU-supported FRAME-project which is focused on a selection of metals and minerals, among others niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta).

The Origin of Certain Granitic Rocks Occurring In Glamorgan Township, Southeastern Ontario / Origin of Certain Granitic Rocks

Chesworth, Ward 05 1900 (has links)

Glamorgan township in southeastern Ontario, is underlain by Precambrian rocks of the Grenville province. Prominent amongst these are migmatite, paragneiss, and granite gneiss, VJhich collectively form a series of rocks (the Glamorgan gneiss aeries).

Field work revealed that this series is completely gradational from a geological aspect, and that the geological gradation is complemented by a geochemical gradation.
An explanation of these gradational relationships constitutes the main contribution of this study. The conclusions reached are that partial melting of paragneiss produced migmatite and a trondhjemitic melt, which later produced granitic (in the strict sense) derivatives.

In developing the main conclusions, a number of subsidiary problems are discussed, chief of which are the possible metavolcanic or metasedimentary o'rigin of the paragneiss and the possible origin of so-called diorite as a differentiate of an alkaline gabbro. Metamorphism was concluded to be of Miyashiro's low pressure intermediate type.

By the use of experimentally determined reactions and stability fields a metamorphic grid was devised, which led to the following upper limits of metamorphic conditions: 550 to 650°C and 3 to 6.5 kilobars total pre5sure. These estimates in turn lead to the following limiting geothermal gradients: 25 to 55°C per kilometre.

The Glamorgan occurrence was found to share three characteristics with many other Precambrian terrains : 1. migmatisation and emplacement of granite accompanied high grade metamorphism; 2. an early sodium-rich granite was followed by a more potassic one; and 3. the more sodic granite is associated with a small amount of basic igneous rock. These three generalisations were used to formulate a possible model for deep crustal petrogenesis.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Hydrodynamique des systèmes minéralisés péri-granitiques : étude du gisement à W-Sn-(Cu) de Panasqueira (Portugal) / Hydrodynamics of peri-granitic mineralized systems : study of the W-Sn-(Cu) Panasqueira ore deposit

Launay, Gaëtan 19 December 2018 (has links)
Ces derniers constituent des mécanismes majeurs permettant d’améliorer significativement la circulation des fluides minéralisateurs et donc la formation de gisements hydrothermaux de grandes tailles / The vein and greisen Sn-W deposits are magmatic-hydrothermal systems that provide an important part of theworld W production and represent an important source of Sn. The formation of these deposits involves continuum ofmagmatic-hydrothermal processes and implies the transfer and the focusing of a large amount of mineralizing fluids. Thisstudy aims to improve understanding of hydrodynamic and geological processes involved during the transport and thedeposition of metals leading to the formation of these deposits. We have performed a complete study combining (i) fieldworks (geological and structural studies), (ii) fluid flow reconstruction via the textural analysis of tourmaline growth bands,(iii) experimental determination of permeability changes during greisenization, and (iv) numerical modeling of peri-graniticfluid flow accounting for magmatic fluid production and dynamic permeability related to fluid-rock interactions. Thismethodology was applied in the case of the world-class W-Sn-(Cu) Panasqueira deposit, which represents a referencesite to study magmatic-hydrothermal processes leading to the formation of large vein and greisen deposit. Our resultsdemonstrate that the releasing and the expulsion of ore-bearing magmatic fluids triggered greisenization of the apicalpart of granite intrusion, which caused generation of porosity (~8.5%) and therefore a significant increase of permeability(from 10-20 to 10-17 m²) in massive greisen composing the granite’s roof. The development of this permeable pathwayconstitutes an important drain promoting the expulsion and the focusing of magmatic fluids produced during thecrystallization of the underlying granite. This enhancement of magmatic fluids expulsion (i) promotes significantly fluidflux and transfer of metals, and (ii) the establishment of high fluid pressure conditions, which coupled with the regionalcompressive crustal regime, triggered the opening of mineralized veins above the granite roof. Finally, this studyemphasizes that reactive hydrothermal fluids are able to generate their own pathways in initially impermeable rocks. Thisprocess represents an important mechanism to enhance fluid flow and promote the formation of large hydrothermaldeposits.
