Υλοποίηση γραφικής διεπαφής σε περιβάλλον Matlab για επεξεργασία ψηφιακής εικόνας τομογραφίας ανθρώπινου δακτύλου

Στόχος της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας ήταν η μελέτη, ο σχεδιασμός και η υλοποίηση μίας Γραφικής Διεπαφής μέσω της οποίας μπορεί ο χρήστης αυτής να επεξεργαστεί μία ψηφιακή εικόνα τομογραφίας ανθρώπινου δακτύλου. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο γίνεται μία εισαγωγή στην επιστήμη της Βιομετρικής και στους λόγους που οδήγησαν στην ανάπτυξη μεθόδων και συστημάτων τα οποία μετράνε τα φυσικά χαρακτηριστικά ενός ατόμου. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται οι αλγόριθμοι εξαγωγής της αγγειακής δομής από εικόνες δακτύλων ή παλάμης αλλά και του αμφιβληστροειδούς. Κάθε ένας από αυτούς τους αλγορίθμους βασίζεται στην εφαρμογή, επάνω στην εικόνα, διαφόρων φίλτρων και τεχνικών επεξεργασίας εικόνας. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο αναφέρονται οι βασικές εφαρμογές των συσκευών που εξάγουν την αγγειακή δομή. Τέτοιες συσκευές συναντάμε ως επί το πλείστον σε Συστήματα Ταυτοποίησης και Ασφαλείας. Ωστόσο χρησιμοποιούνται επίσης και για ιατρικούς σκοπούς σε διαγνωστικές και θεραπευτικές διαδικασίες. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται οι βασικές τεχνικές φιλτραρίσματος και οι βασικές τεχνικές επεξεργασίας εικόνας, οι οποίες είναι και αυτές που μπορεί να εφαρμόσει ο χρήστης της Γραφικής Διεπαφής που υλοποιήθηκε. Στο πέμπτο και τελευταίο κεφάλαιο δίνεται ο σχεδιασμός και η ανάπτυξη του Γραφικού Περιβάλλοντος για την επεξεργασία εικόνας. Δίνεται η τελική μορφή της Γραφικής Διεπαφής και ο τρόπος λειτουργίας αυτής. / In this diploma work we studied, designed and created a Graphical User’s Interface in MATLAB environment through which a user can process a digital image tomography of a human finger. In the first chapter an introduction in Biometrics is made and we study the reasons that led in the development of methods and systems which recognize and measure the physical characteristics of a person. In the second chapter we analyze the algorithms which extract the vascular patterns from finger vein images and images of the palm dorsa and also from retinal images. Each one of them is based on the implementation, on the image, of several filters and image processing techniques. In the third chapter we mention the basic implementations of the devices which extract the vascular pattern. These devices are found mostly in Safety and Authentication Systems. However, they are also used for medical purposes in diagnostics and treatment’s procedures. In the fourth chapter we study the basic image filtering techniques and the basic image processing techniques. These techniques are also the options which are given to the user to implement on an image with the Graphical User’s Interface we created. In the fifth and last chapter the design and the creation of the Graphical User’s Interface for the image processing are given. Lastly, the final form of the Graphical User’s Interface and the way it can be used are given.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy in Virtual Reality: Proof of Concept

This research focuses on the integration of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) and Virtual Reality (VR). EMDR is a therapeutic approach using bilateral stimulation to process distressing memories, emotions, and experiences. It is widely employed for conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The study involves the development of a proof-of-concept virtual reality tool tailored for EMDR therapy sessions. The tool comprises a bilaterally moving sphere within the user's VR environment, controllable by the therapist through a graphical interface on a computer. The therapist can dynamically adjust the sphere's color, speed, and sound to enhance the therapeutic process. The study's findings affirm the feasibility of creating a VR tool that supports therapists in conducting effective EMDR therapy sessions.

Para tanto, foi utilizado um sistema de aquisição de imagem para capturar imagens de amostras de óleo retidas em membranas de filtro e, também, desenvolvida uma metodologia analítica que faz a classificação quantitativa e qualitativa das partículas, relacionando-as ao modo de desgaste na qual foram geradas. Para a classificação quantitativa utilizou-se a norma ISO 4406 e para a qualitativa, a análise por meio de Redes Neurais Artificiais. O sistema aplicado consiste em uma câmera digital, um microscópio óptico monocular, um sistema de filtragem de óleo e dois programas computacionais desenvolvidos para realização da análise automatizada das imagens das partículas de desgaste obtidas. Foram utilizados óleos minerais de redutores de máquinas industriais no processo de obtenção de amostras. As partículas de desgaste foram analisadas pelo processo de microscopia óptica para obtenção da imagem da amostra relacionada ao desgaste. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o sistema de análise desenvolvido realiza a classificação individual das partículas, através de Redes Neurais Artificiais, com uma eficiência de até 96%, além de analisar as múltiplas partículas contidas nas amostras, exibindo um relatório de acompanhamento e evolução do desgaste. Os programas computacionais desenvolvidos para essa análise possuem interface gráfica de fácil utilização. Eles podem ser amplamente utilizados no estudo e avaliação das partículas de desgaste obtidas de amostras de óleos industriais em empresas ou em universidades para fins educacionais. O sistema pode ser utilizado para análise de superfícies de metais obtidos pelo processo de metalografia ou na análise de imagens de microorganismos obtidas... / This paper describes the development of an image analysis system for wear particles found in industrial equipment lubricating oil. Hence, it was utilized an image acquisition system to capture image samples of the oil held in filter membranes. An analytical methodology was also developed to classify the particles quantitatively and qualitatively, relating them to the wear mode where they had been generated. The ISO 4406 standard was applied for quantitative classification and Artificial Neural Networks were used for qualitative classification analysis. The applied system consists of a digital camera, a monocular optical microscope, one oil filtering system and two software programs developed to perform the automated analysis of the acquired wear particles images. Mineral oils of gearbox industrial machines were used in the process of achieving the samples. The wear particles were analyzed by an optical microscopy system, to obtain the sample image related to the wear. The results showed that the analysis system that was developed classifies the individual particles through Artificial Neural Networks with 96% accuracy, in addition to analyzing the multiple particles contained in the samples and generating an evaluation report and wear evolution. The software programs developed for the analysis have a graphical interface easy to use. They can be used in the study and evaluation of the wear particles obtained from industrial oil samples in the companies or in the universities for educational purposes. The system can be applied to analyze the surface of metals acquired by metallographic processes or in the image analysis of microorganisms acquired from blood samples, opening a wide field of application within universities and researches.

Graphical elements that can invoke trust in online web shops / Grafiska element som inger trygghet och tillit i webbutiker

Online stores are becoming a natural part of our daily life, and more and more services and products are purchased through an online store. As e-commerce is growing, so is computer fraud, and trustworthiness is now an important topic in e-commerce. Exploring what components in an e-commerce experience, from a customer's point of view, that affect trust is therefore important. The web page can be equated to the look of a physical store, but a company needs to have other trust indicating elements in an online store since a consumer cannot touch the product or have an eye to eye dialog with the salesman. So, the question is How do you display things in an online store to appeal trust in the first impression of the shop and what other graphical factors matterswhen you want to appeal trust? Our definition of trust is taken from McKnight and Chervany and is defined as "the extent to which one party is willing to depend on the other party in a given situation with a feeling of relative security, even though negative consequences are possible". We also build our study on how different colors get people to react in a certain way and the importance of the first impression. To answer the question about how to appeal trust in an online shop, we sent out a form to students at KTH Royal Institute of Technology containing 31 images of online stores and asked them to answer the question "Does this web shop seem trustworthy to you?" on each of these images. When creating the various images with different designs we wanted to include designs that we thought were going to be perceived as trustworthy, and designs that we thought not. We could then change some aspects in those designs to see what works or not. The result shows that online stores that are deemed professional is the most trustworthy ones and we can conclude that intense colors are something to avoid, while having a certificate and providing contact information is something to recommend. / Butiker online blir en mer och mer naturlig del av våra dagliga liv och allt fler varor och tjänster köps idag via butiker online. Samtidigt som e-handeln växer så växer även datorrelaterade brott, och trygghet är nu ett viktigt ämne inom e-handeln. Att utforska vilka grafiska komponenter i en webbutik som inger trygghet ur en kunds synvinkel är därför viktigt. En hemsida kan likställas med hur en fysisk butik ser ut, men företagen behöver andra trygghetsindikerande element i en webbutik eftersom kunder inte kan röra vid produkter eller ha en dialog med en försäljare. Frågan är alltså "Hur visar du element som förmedlar trygghet vid ett första intryck av butiken och vad för grafiska faktorer spelar roll om du vill förmedla en trygghetskänsla?". Vår definition av trygghet kommer från McKnight och Chervany och definieras som "Den utsträckning en part är villig att bero av en annan part i en given situation med en känsla av relativ säkerhet, även om negativa konsekvenser är möjliga". Vi har också grundat vår studie i hur olika färger får människor att reagera på ett visst sätt vid ett första intryck. För att svara på frågan hur man kan tillämpa trygghet i en webbutik så skickade vi ut en enkät till studenter vid Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan innehållandes 31 bilder på webbutiker och ställde frågan "Känns denna webbutik trygg för dig" efter varje bild. När dessa bilder gjordes ville vi inkludera design vi trodde skulle upplevas som trygg och design vi inte trodde skulle kännas trygg. Vi kunde sedan ändra element i dessa för att se vad som fungerade och vad som inte fungerade. Resultaten visar att webbutiker som verkar professionella är de tryggaste och vi kan dra slutsatsen att mätta färger är något att undvika medan att ha ett certifikat och ha kontaktinformation är något att rekommendera.

Estudo comparativo sobre representações visuais em interfaces com base em ícones de dispositivos móveis da Apple

Esta dissertação teve por objetivo verificar se existe um diferencial estético nas representações visuais nas interfaces gráficas dos dispositivos móveis da Apple e, se existir, se esse diferencial efetivamente influencia o vínculo do usuário com a marca e se o usuário tem consciência dele. Para tanto é apresentada uma breve análise diacrônica sobre as interfaces computacionais, bem como uma descrição de momentos chave na história da referida empresa. A partir disto, são abordadas questões que abrangem o posicionamento da marca Apple, pois desde a popularização das interfaces gráficas (GUI) a mesma tem sido associada tanto ao conceito de boas interfaces, quanto tem esta relação contestada. Existem ainda autores que consideram que o sucesso da marca Apple deve-se menos à qualidade de seus produtos (hardware e interfaces gráficas) que à força das ações de marketing da empresa. Para compreender de forma mais pontual as interfaces que eram objeto de estudo e as diretrizes que envolvem a construção de seu desenho, foram analisados os guias de desenvolvimento de interfaces da Apple para o iOS (iOS Human Interface Guidelines) e do Android (Android Developers), atualmente seu principal concorrente. A fim de tentar analisar a percepção que usuários têm das especificidades e dos diferenciais estéticos entre as referidas interfaces, foram construídas duas simulações, cada qual com características de um dos sistemas. Sessões experimentais com usuários, seguidas de entrevista, compuseram a fase empírica, de cunho qualitativo, em que se procurou verificar qual conjunto de ícones os participantes preferiam e por que. Os resultados encontrados apontam que questões estéticas são importantes na percepção que as pessoas têm das interfaces. Essa atenção às configurações estéticas parece contribuir para a percepção geral que se tem dos produtos onde os ícones se apresentam. A partir desses resultados é possível afirmar que a estética faz parte do conjunto de fatores, que constroem a percepção final – positiva ou negativa, de uma interface e, com ela, dos produtos de uma determinada marca. Por outro lado, embora o conjunto de ícones construído de acordo com os parâmetros do Guia de Desenvolvimento de Interfaces da Apple tenha sido preferido por dois terços dos participantes, não houve identificação daquele grupo de ícones com as interfaces da marca Apple. Isso sugere que a construção da marca é alicerçada na qualidade estética de suas interfaces, mas indica também a importância das ações de marketing na atribuição de maior qualidade estética às interfaces da Apple. / This work aimed to verify whether there is a differential in aesthetic visual representations in the graphical interfaces of Apple’s mobile devices. If a difference was found, a second objective was to verify whether this differential effectively influences the bond between user and brand and if the user is aware of it. To this end, it starts with a brief diachronic analysis of computer interfaces, as well as a description of key moments in Apple's history of. Discussed issues include brand positioning, as, since the popularization of graphical user interfaces (GUI), Apple has been associated to the concept of good interfaces. However, at the same time, this relationship has also been challenged, as there are authors who believe that the success of the brand Apple is not due to the quality of its products (hardware and graphical interfaces) but to the strength of the marketing activities of the company. To understand the specific interfaces that were the object of this study and to know the guidelines that drive their design, we analyzed Apple iOS Human Interface Guidelines and its Android equivalent - Android Developers - (as Android is currently Apple's main competitor in the mobile market). In order to analyze users' perception of specific features and aesthetic differences between Apple and Android interfaces, two simulations were built, each with characteristics of either system. Experimental sessions with users were followed by interviews, comprising the empirical, qualitative study. These experiments aimed to verify which set of icons participants preferred and why. The results show that aesthetic considerations are important in the perception of interfaces. This attention to aesthetic settings seems to contribute to the general perception that people have of the digital products themselves. From these results we can say that aesthetics is part of the set of factors that build the final perception - positive or negative - of an interface, and with it, the products of a particular brand. However, although the icon set constructed in accordance with the parameters of iOS Human Interface Guidelines Apple has been preferred by two-thirds of the participants, the identification of that group of icons with Apple interfaces did not happen. This suggests that Apple's brand building can be founded on the aesthetic quality of its interfaces, but also indicates the importance of marketing actions in assigning greater aesthetic quality to Apple interfaces.

Para compreender de forma mais pontual as interfaces que eram objeto de estudo e as diretrizes que envolvem a construção de seu desenho, foram analisados os guias de desenvolvimento de interfaces da Apple para o iOS (iOS Human Interface Guidelines) e do Android (Android Developers), atualmente seu principal concorrente. A fim de tentar analisar a percepção que usuários têm das especificidades e dos diferenciais estéticos entre as referidas interfaces, foram construídas duas simulações, cada qual com características de um dos sistemas. Sessões experimentais com usuários, seguidas de entrevista, compuseram a fase empírica, de cunho qualitativo, em que se procurou verificar qual conjunto de ícones os participantes preferiam e por que. Os resultados encontrados apontam que questões estéticas são importantes na percepção que as pessoas têm das interfaces. Essa atenção às configurações estéticas parece contribuir para a percepção geral que se tem dos produtos onde os ícones se apresentam. A partir desses resultados é possível afirmar que a estética faz parte do conjunto de fatores, que constroem a percepção final – positiva ou negativa, de uma interface e, com ela, dos produtos de uma determinada marca. Por outro lado, embora o conjunto de ícones construído de acordo com os parâmetros do Guia de Desenvolvimento de Interfaces da Apple tenha sido preferido por dois terços dos participantes, não houve identificação daquele grupo de ícones com as interfaces da marca Apple. Isso sugere que a construção da marca é alicerçada na qualidade estética de suas interfaces, mas indica também a importância das ações de marketing na atribuição de maior qualidade estética às interfaces da Apple. / This work aimed to verify whether there is a differential in aesthetic visual representations in the graphical interfaces of Apple’s mobile devices. If a difference was found, a second objective was to verify whether this differential effectively influences the bond between user and brand and if the user is aware of it. To this end, it starts with a brief diachronic analysis of computer interfaces, as well as a description of key moments in Apple's history of. Discussed issues include brand positioning, as, since the popularization of graphical user interfaces (GUI), Apple has been associated to the concept of good interfaces. However, at the same time, this relationship has also been challenged, as there are authors who believe that the success of the brand Apple is not due to the quality of its products (hardware and graphical interfaces) but to the strength of the marketing activities of the company. To understand the specific interfaces that were the object of this study and to know the guidelines that drive their design, we analyzed Apple iOS Human Interface Guidelines and its Android equivalent - Android Developers - (as Android is currently Apple's main competitor in the mobile market). In order to analyze users' perception of specific features and aesthetic differences between Apple and Android interfaces, two simulations were built, each with characteristics of either system. Experimental sessions with users were followed by interviews, comprising the empirical, qualitative study. These experiments aimed to verify which set of icons participants preferred and why. The results show that aesthetic considerations are important in the perception of interfaces. This attention to aesthetic settings seems to contribute to the general perception that people have of the digital products themselves. From these results we can say that aesthetics is part of the set of factors that build the final perception - positive or negative - of an interface, and with it, the products of a particular brand. However, although the icon set constructed in accordance with the parameters of iOS Human Interface Guidelines Apple has been preferred by two-thirds of the participants, the identification of that group of icons with Apple interfaces did not happen. This suggests that Apple's brand building can be founded on the aesthetic quality of its interfaces, but also indicates the importance of marketing actions in assigning greater aesthetic quality to Apple interfaces.

Diploma thesis describes a system for automatic detection of buttons from a screen photo.The system is used together with a robotic arm and a camera to detect buttons on the screens of embedded devices. After detecting buttons on the screen, the algorithm commands the robotic arm to click on the position of the detected button. The algorithm creates a navigation map in which all screens of the device are visible by systematically clicking through all buttons on all screens. For each screen, the positions of the detected buttons and the destination to which the screen points are stored.
