Embrapa 29 (Garoa) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum) cv. / Pastures represent the largest part of the agricultural area and contribute to the second and fifth activities that make up the Brazilian GPD, meat and milk. The increasing use of pasture irrigation primarily arose in dairy areas, along with processes that improve the production, and subsequently reache areas of beef cattle. Thus, there is a need for an adequate irrigation management, and it is fundamental to know the crop evapotranspiration of pastures, their productive limits and their characteristics in this intensification process. Therefore, this work aimed to determine the crop water consumption, the values of crop coefficient (Kc), and the productive and biometric parameters of two tropical grasses (Panicum maximum cv. \'Mombasa\' and Cynodon spp.) single cropped and intercropped in oversseeding with black oats and ryegrass . As secondary goals, it sought: (i) measuring the biometric parameters of forage canopy height (ADF) and leaf area index (LAI) between the cycles, identifying the best cutting period; (ii) estimating the mean accumulation of degree-days of development (GDD) in the different seasons, correlating them with forage growth; (iii) estimating the crop water consumption with the FDR probe Diviner 2000® and correlating its data with the crop water consumption measured on weighing lysimeters. The study was carried out at the \"Luiz de Queiroz\" College of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP), at Piracicaba, SP (Latitude 22°42\'14\"S; Longitude 47°37\'24\"W; Altitude de 569 m a.s.l.). The experiments were conducted from March 2015 to February 2017, with a randomized complete block design with 4 treatments: 1 - single cropped \'Mombasa guinea grass ; 2- \'Mombasa\' guinea grass intercropped with oats and ryegrass; 3 - single cropped Cynodon spp.; 4 - Cynodon spp. intercropped with oats and ryegrass. The winter forages were black oats (Avena strigosa) cv. Embrapa 29 (Garoa) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cv. Fepagro São Gabriel. The calibrations of the lysimeters and the FDR probe had good adjustments, with high correlation coefficients. The results obtained of crop water consumption by the grasses showed a great variation by period and inside the growing cycles with great water consumption, often obtaining Kc values above 1. Good correlations were obtained between crop growth, LAI and degrees-days accumulation (GDD). The accumulated values of crop coefficient (Kc) were higher with the FDR sensor than with the lysimeters. The detailed results can be found in the chapters of this work.

Understanding Variability of Biogenic Gas Fluxes from Peat Soils at High Temporal Resolution Using Capacitance Moisture ProbesUnknown Date (has links)
Peatlands act as carbon sinks while representing major sources of biogenic gases
such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), two potent greenhouse gases. Gas
production and release in these peats soils are also influenced by overall warm
temperatures and water table fluctuations due to the naturally shallow water table in the
Florida Everglades. Releases of biogenic gases from Florida Everglades peat soils are not
well understood and the temporal distribution and dynamics are uncertain. The general
objective of this work was geared towards a methodological approach which aimed to
examine the feasibility of capacitance moisture probes to investigate biogenic gas
dynamics in various Florida Everglades peat soils at high temporal resolution. This work
has implications for establishing capacitance moisture probes as a method to monitor gas
dynamics in peat soils at high temporal resolution and better understanding patterns of
gas build-up and release from peat soils in the Everglades. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

One of the main aspects for the population ecology and evolution is the understanding of the connectivity among individuals and their groups. The Pampa biome presents several floristic elements of high ecological importance and its grassy structure, steppic-savanna, has been fragmented and impacted by the production system and by the absence of management of this naturally fragile biome. From the information about genetic diversity of native populations, it is possible to understand the current status of the environment degradation, highlighting the presence of gene flow among populations and to suggest management strategies that could guarantee the survival of the local biodiversity. In this study, Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae) was employed to evaluate the ecological dynamic, the genetic diversity and structure in tree species of the Pampa biome. The expected expansion dynamic for this species was determined through ecological niche modeling and the genetic diversity and structure were evaluated in nine populations sampled within the Pampa stricto sensu, using microsatellite and AFLP markers. The ecological niche modeling map of S. molle suggests the species expansion over the grassland as a natural phenomenon of the biomes ecological dynamic. The intra- and inter-population genetic structure suggests limitations to the gene flow and the intra-population genetic structure is low in comparison to species with the same biological traits. The isolation among populations and their small size seems to be the main factor negatively interfering in the environment. The maintenance of connections among the populations is the immediate action suggested to safeguard the species and the biome.

This work was based on the results of an experiment conducted for five years (2003-2008), at Estação Experimental Campanha, Fundação de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul in natural grasslands of the Pampas Biome. Treatments consisted of four levels of forage allowance (FA) 4, 8, 12 and 16 kg of DMGF/100 kg of LW and a System (SYS) comprising three areas with complementary managements (natural grassland 12% FA, deferred natural grassland and improved natural pasture by fertilization and oversowing of winter cultivated species). Grazing method was continuous, with variable stocking rate, using four Braford steers as testers. The design was a completely randomized block with repeated measures in time (years) and two repetitions of area. The variables related to primary production showed positive and linear response to the increase in forage allowance. The average daily gain in the summer and spring were described by linear regression with a break point in forage allowance of 10.1%. In the autumn, the response was quadratic with maximum value at 14% FA, while in winter it was linear, being necessary to ensure a forage allowance of 12% to assure animal maintainance. The stocking rate showed a decreasing linear response in the summer and spring. The economic analysis of treatments determined the highest total production cost, net income and gross margin considering all the costs for treatment "SYS". In addition, it was responsible for increased productivity and therefore easily reached the point of economical equilibrium of the total production cost. Thus, among the possibilities tested the "SYS" was the best economic alternative for growing and fattening cattle on natural grassland. To rearing and finishing exclusively on natural grassland, the best economical alternative is the use of 12% of forage on offer all year round. Considering the possibility indicated by the "SYS" and using simulations for production systems for growing and finishing steers and fattening cows, the improvement of 25% of the natural pasture area shows the alternative of greater economic efficiency.

Produção e qualidade da carcaça e da carne de bovinos de corte baseados em sistemas pastoris com ou sem uso de insumos em dois biomas no Sul do Brasil / Production and meat quality of beef cattle from pasture systems with or without use of input in two biomes of southern BrazilOliveira, Lucas Vargas January 2017 (has links)
The process of intensifying food systems in ruminant production has recently been the focus of policy discussions on food safety, animal welfare and the quality of meat products. The possibility of feed diversification at different stages of animal growth, trhough diferent pasture systems or in feedlots, leads to changes in the animal's body development and meat quality. In this context, this thesis search to identify, through two experimental protocols localizated in southern Brazil, the seasonal productive characteristics of forage, animal performance and the carcass and physical-chemical attributes of the meat of beef cattle produced under different food systems. The subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) of the animals was determined periodically by ultrasonic images, this measure being used as a criterion for the slaughter. Experiment one (Pampa Biome) was carried out in a completely randomized design with three treatments (feeding systems) and three replicates during the finishing phase of the steers just to slaughter (SFT, 3 to 6 mm). Treatments were: i) natural grassland; ii) improved natural grassland with fertilization and oversowing of winter grass. iii) same as ii, but slaughtered at more advanced age. Experiment two (highlands of Mata Atlântica biome), was realized through a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replicates during the growing and finishing phase of the animals just to the slaughter (SFT, 2 to 3 mm). Treatments were: i) Natural grassland; ii) improved natural grassland with fertilization and oversowing of winter grass and legumes; (iii) winter cultivated pasture during two winters; iv) winter cultivated pasture (same as iii) supplemented with 0.8% LW/day-1; v) feedlot with ratio of bulky and concentrated (75:25) in the diet. Thus, we aimed to characterize productive systems of beef cattle used in each region. In these two studies, it was verified that the utilized animal stocking determine positive changes in the seasonal forage production in the two experimental environments. As the system intensification process increases, there was a greater accumulation of subcutaneous fat in the carcass, thus reducing the slaughter age of the animals. Natural grasslands systems and natural with a low use of inputs, allow desirable physical-chemical attributes in the meat, higher CLA content, high concentration of n-6 and n-3 and lower ratio n-6/n-3 in relation to the most intensive use of grain in the diet.

Influência da estrutura espacial e da vegetação sobre a assembléia de aves em remanescentes campestres no sul do Brasil / Influence of spatial and vegetation structure on the bird assemblage in grassland patches in Southern BrazilCamilotti, Vagner Luis January 2009 (has links)
The goal of this study was to investigate the factors that structure bird assemblages in grassland patches in Campos Biome of Fronteira Oeste region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Thus, I searched for the effects of the spatial structure of native vegetation patches and the effects caused by their vegetation structure on the avifauna that makes use of them. I utilized remote sensing techniques to evaluate the spatial structure of the patches (area, shape, and proximity among patches) and I characterized the patches’ habitat by measuring the vegetation structure (vegetation height, dead standing vegetation, soil covered by vegetation, percentage coverage by grasses, herbs, and shrubs). I used the variation partitioning method to quantify the portion of variation explained by both spatial and vegetation group of variables in the total avifauna’s abundance, composition, and richness variation. I registered 33 grassland bird species and among them, three are threatened with extinction: Circus cinereus, Cisthotorus platensis, and Sporophila cinnamomea. My results denote an insignificant effect of spatial structure of patches on the grassland birds and a high response to the vegetation structure. In this way, my results suggest that the grassland bird’s assemblages that use native vegetation patches are mainly structured by the habitat characteristics (vegetation structure), and are weakly influenced by the patches spatial arrangement. Thus, the maintenance of neighbour patches, even though small ones, into the arable fields may favour the persistence of a high diversity of grassland birds in the region studied.

Distribuição e abundância de mamíferos neotropicais não voadores de pequeno porte em paisagem silvicultural da bacia do Alto Paranapanema, São Paulo, Brasil / Distribution and abundance of Neotropical non-volant small mammals in silvicultural landscapePaula Sanches Martin 25 October 2010 (has links)
Eucalyptus plantations currently cover 4.5 million hectares of Brazilian territory. This forestry is expanding mainly over areas of extensive livestock production. The effects of the replacement of pastures by eucalyptus plantations on the distribution of small mammals are still unknown. In this context, this study aimed at to identify the distribution pattern and abundance of small mammals in an area where recently cattle pastures were converted into eucalyptus plantations. This study was carried out at Fazenda Três Lagoas and Fazenda Arca in the municipality of Angatuba, located in the Upper Paranapanema river basin, between August 2007 and July 2009. The small mammals survey was carried out with pitfall traps distributed in 30 sampling units. Fourteen species of orders Didelphimorphia and Rodentia were captured. The abandoned pasture and the native vegetation presented a higher abundance and species richness in relation to the eucalyptus plantations. The taxocenosis of small mammals in this silvicultural landscape resembles those found in other agricultural landscapes. These results together and the current land use trend suggest that eucalyptus plantations can be relatively to small mammals. However, the remnants of native vegetation in silvicultural landscapes are essential to the conservation of these species.

Evaluation of the effects of tree clearing over time on soil properties, pasture composition and productivitySangha, Kamaljit Kaur, Kamaljit.kaur@jcu.edu.au January 2003 (has links)
Tree clearing is practised for greater beef production and hence monetary gains from grazing
systems of central Queensland. The high rates of clearing in the past and even recently (577,
000 ha/yr during 1999-2001) were mainly to develop land for pastures. The sustainability of
cleared pasture systems over the long-term is questioned.
Three major types of tree communities i.e. Eucalyptus populnea F. Muell., E. melanophloia F.
Muell. and Acacia harpophylla F. Muell. ex. Benth. were selected on one property in central
Queensland to quantify the impacts of clearing on pasture production and composition, and
soil properties. The impacts were measured over time-since-clearing (recent (<5 years),
medium (11-13years) and old (>30 years)) in unreplicated cleared pastures in comparison to
their replicated uncleared/intact woodland pastures of each tree community.
Measures of pasture above-ground biomass production on a single property over time-sinceclearing
in cleared systems showed that gains were not sustained over the long-term. The
difference in response to clearing between tree communities was evident and important to
support the future policy decisions. The impact of clearing on soil properties (physicochemical
and biological) was confirmed, and explained the lesser availability of nutrients with
time of clearing in cleared pastures. The changes in some soil properties underscored the
associated risks and changes in ecosystem functions due to clearing. Less litter was produced
at cleared than uncleared pastures, but nutrient release was faster at cleared compared to
uncleared systems. The overall effect of clearing in terms of pasture and litter production, and
major soil parameters were analysed using multivariate analyses.

Biodiversity along a gradient of modification : plant invertebrates and reptile diversity in mid-altitude tall tussock (Chionochloa rigida) grasslands, eastern Central Otago, New ZealandDixon, Katherine Marguerite, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This thesis set out to examine the soils, plants, lichens, invertebrates and common skinks along a gradient of habitat modification. This gradient was represented by ten study sites, of varying management histories, in a mid altitude tall tussock (Chionochloa spp.) grassland in eastern Central Otago. One extreme of the gradient was represented by intact tall tussock plants with a high density of inter tussock vegetation. The other extreme was represented by intensively managed exotic pasture.
Native plants, invertebrates and reptiles were present along the entire gradient of modification and there was a clear threshold in the diversity of native plants along the gradient. This threshold was reached after the management practice of ploughing was applied to a site. Sites that had not been ploughed were found to be similar in their native plant diversity, and all unploughed sites had significantly higher native plant diversity than unploughed sites.
There was considerable variation in the abundance of individual plant and Coleoptera species along the modification gradient. The most intensively modified sites had the lowest plant diversity, the lowest abundance and diversity of Orthoptera, as well as the lowest abundance of common skinks. Sites with low levels of modification contained a higher abundance of common skinks, and, native forbs, lichens and bryophytes than the more intensively modified sites.
With regard to individual plant and Coleoptera species recorded, there were generally not clear thresholds for their presence and absence along the modification gradient. Rather, there was a gradual turnover for most species along the gradient such that the plant and Coleoptera community at opposing ends of the gradient had less species in common sites of similar modification levels.
A high proportion of the Coleoptera species observed were present in all sites, suggesting that disturbance has selected for an adaptive generalist life trait, and that the species remaining comprise the resilient portion of the Coleoptera fauna. The relationship between Coleoptera communities and the gradient of modification was scale dependent, with the strongest relationship being observed at the largest scale measured.
The hypothesis that faunal diversity and abundance would be best predicted by the structural diversity of the vegetation rather than by plant species diversity was tested. Structural diversity was strongly correlated (p < 0.01) with Coleoptera diversity, and Coleoptera abundance whereas plant species diversity was not. However, plant species diversity was a stronger correlate of common skink abundance than plant structural diversity. The structural diversity of the vegetation has the potential to be measured remotely and could be a correlate for faunal diversity and abundance when undertaking landscape scale studies.
This thesis demonstrates that native biota exists within the agricultural environment of the mid-altitude tall tussock (Chionochloa rigida) grasslands of eastern Central Otago despite intensive modification in some areas. The findings suggest that it is possible to integrate the objectives of agriculture and the conservation of some faunal groups especially for the more resilient species. However, this study also indicates that relatively unmodified sites are valuable reservoirs of biodiversity in the mid altitude zone and it is recommended that the limited number of lightly modified sites that remain in the mid altitude zone be conserved.

Biogeochemical Cycling and Microbial Communities in Native Grasslands:Responses to Climate Change and DefoliationAttaeian, Behnaz 06 1900 (has links)
Ongoing climate change has emerged as a major scientific challenge in the current century. Grassland ecosystems are considered net carbon (C) sinks to mitigate climate change. However, they are in turn, influenced by climate change and management practices, providing feedback to climate change via soil microbial community and biogeochemical fluxes. In this thesis, I examined the impact of warming, altered precipitation, and defoliation on soil microbial composition and function, C and N dynamics, and fluxes in soil respiration (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4), together with other belowground ecosystem functions, within two ecosites in a northern native temperate grassland in central Alberta, Canada, over a two-year period.
Fungi-to-bacteria ratio was not affected by climatic parameters or defoliation, indicating a high degree of resistance in the below ground community to the treatments imposed. However, C substrate utilization was influenced by warming and defoliation, as was soil microbial biomass. In contrast, soil respiration (or C loss) was not. Soil respiration acclimatized rather quickly to warming, and N2O and CH4 effluxes showed minor responses to warming at both ecosites, regardless of defoliation. These results suggest warming is unlikely to lead to positive climate change feedback due to soil-based responses, regardless of ongoing land use. However, altered precipitation ( 50%) demonstrated greater impacts on C and N fluxes relative to warming and defoliation. Increased precipitation stimulated soil C loss to the atmosphere, potentially generating positive feedback for climatic warming in this northern temperate grassland. / Soil Science
