Multiplexed optical fibre sensors for civil engineering applications

Fibre-optic sensors have been the focus of a lot of research, but their associated high cost has stifled their transferral from the laboratory to real world applications. This thesis addresses the issue of multiplexing, a technology that would lower the cost per unit sensor of a sensor system dramatically. An overview of the current state of research of, and the principles behind, multiplexed sensor networks is given. A new scheme of multiplexing, designated W*DM, is developed and implemented for a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) optical fibre sensor network. Using harmonic analysis, multiplexing is performed in the domain dual to that of the wavelength domain of a sensor. This scheme for multiplexing is compatible with the most commonly used existing schemes of WDM and TDM and thus offers an expansion over, and a resultant cost decrease from, the sensor systems currently in use. This research covered a theoretical development of the scheme, a proof of principle, simulated and experimental analysis of the performance of the multiplexed system, investigation into sensor design requirements and related issues, fabrication of the sensors according to the requirements of the scheme and the successful multiplexing of eight devices (thus offering an eightfold increase over current network capacities) using this scheme. Extensions of this scheme to other fibre sensors such as Long Period Gratings (LPGs) and blazed gratings were also investigated. Two LPGs having a moir?? structure were successfully multiplexed and it was shown that a blazed Fabry Perot grating could be used as a tuneable dual strain/refractive index sensor. In performing these tests, it was discovered that moir?? LPGs exhibited a unique thermal switching behaviour, hereto unseen. Finally the application of fibre sensors to the civil engineering field was investigated. The skill of embedding optical fibre in concrete was painstakingly developed and the thermal properties of concrete were investigated using these sensors. Field tests for the structural health monitoring of a road bridge made from a novel concrete material were performed. The phenomenon of shrinkage, creep and cracking in concrete was investigated showing the potential for optical fibre sensors to be used as a viable research tool for the civil engineer.

It is proposed a sensor design where the refractive index sensitivity is improved. The design includes the use of the sensor with simple and low cost interrogation. Several manufacturing parameters are investigated and the process is enhanced to meet the design specifications, and also to obtain repeatability in the process. New ideas were proposed to manufacture tilted gratings and to control the index modulation duty cycle in a practical way with inexpensive equipment. The inscription of the fiber sensor is made by CO2 laser, point to point, with a uniform index modulation. The gratings were interrogated by an optical spectrum analyzer and also by edge filter demodulation in the 1550 nm region through an electronic board, developed in this work with automatic normalization of the signal. Results show that the refractive index sensitivity is influenced by several design and manufacturing parameters of the fiber grating. Performed experiments show a considerable increase in the refractive index sensitivity of the grating. / Este trabalho explora o potencial e demonstra a implementação das redes de período longo em fibra como sensores de índice de refração. É proposto um projeto do sensor em que a sensibilidade ao índice de refração é aperfeiçoada. O projeto contempla a utilização do sensor com interrogação de maneira simples e de baixo custo. Diversos parâmetros de fabricação são investigados e o processo é aprimorado para atingir as especificações de projeto, e também a fim da obtenção de repetibilidade no processo. Novas ideias foram propostas para fabricação de redes inclinadas e para o controle do duty cycle da modulação de índice da rede de maneira prática com equipamentos de baixo custo. A fabricação do sensor em fibra é feita através de laser de CO2, ponto a ponto, e com modulação de índice uniforme. As redes foram interrogadas através de analisador de espectro óptico e também por demodulação de borda de filtro na região de 1550 nm através de uma placa eletrônica, desenvolvida neste trabalho com normalização automática do sinal. Resultados mostram que a sensibilidade ao índice de refração é influenciada por alguns parâmetros de projeto e fabricação da rede em fibra. Experimentos realizados mostraram um aumento considerável na sensibilidade da rede ao índice de refração.

Photonic structures fabricated in polymer materials using femtosecond laser irradiation

Sub-surface modification using a frequency doubled Ti: Sapphire femtosecond (fs) laser at 1kHz repetition rate, producing 100-fs pulse duration at 400nm, is studied in order to fabricate optical components within non-photosensitised polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This thesis explores the feasibility of producing three-dimensional optical devices in bulk polymers and polymer optical fibre (POF) using fs laser direct-writing techniques. For effective and optimal structuring, the laser writing parameters and focusing conditions, such as focusing depth, translation speed, and accumulated fluence are investigated by means of photo-modification thresholds; structural changes in dimensions and morphologies; and the magnitude of the refractive index modulation. The highest refractive index change is 3.2x10^(-3) achieved by using a dry (non-immersion) 0.45-NA objective for a single laser scan. Variations in damage threshold with focusing depths are attributed to a combination of material absorption or surface scattering of light due to contamination or surface imperfections, as well as oxygen diffusion and spherical aberration. Distortion of the laser-induced feature size and shape due to spherical aberrations is controlled and compensated by adjusting the laser power near the damage threshold. Permanent refractive index structures with cross-sectional dimensions of 2μm by 0.9μm and 3μm by 1.4μm are demonstrated at depths of 300μm and 500μm below the surface, resulting in the axial/ lateral ratio of 2.2 and 2.1, respectively. A novel phenomenon relevant to effects of translation speed on the fs laser modification is observed for the first time. As translation speeds reduce from 1.2 to 0.6mm/s, the optical damage threshold power decreases by 6μW, whilst other writing conditions remain constant. However, the damage threshold increases by 74μW with decreasing speeds from 0.6 to 0.35mm/s. This significant increase in threshold power enables inscription of refractive index gratings <5μm below the surface, because irradiation on the surface or near the surface initiates ablation rather than refractive index changes, and this forms a limit for writing useful structures. Compensating for this limit by using appropriate writing parameters highlights the potential of fabricating three-dimensional integrated optical circuits in thin (100μm) polymer substrates. Finally, highly localised fabrication of long period gratings into step-index single mode polymer fibres is demonstrated by removing distortion effects due to the curved surface. The distortion is compensated by sandwiching the fibre with two flat PMMA sheets, between which index-matching oil (n=1.5) is injected. This arrangement enables precise laser micro-structuring with flat interfaces and continuous inner material. The first demonstration of a 250-μm-period fibre grating, resulting in attenuation bands in the visible spectral region at 613, 633, 728, 816, 853, 877 and 900nm, is presented.

Etude d'un spéctromètre intégré SWIFTS pour réaliser des capteurs optiques fibrés pour les sciences de l'observation / Integrated spectrometer SWIFTS for photosensitive fiber sensors applied to observation sciences

SWIFTS (pour Stationary-Wave Integrated Fourier-Transform Spectrometer) est un concept de spectromètre s'appuyant sur l'optique intégrée pour proposer un système de mesure compact et de très haute résolution. Il combine une technique d'interférométrie développée par Gabriel Lippmann avec des technologies de microélectroniques actuelles. La technologie SWIFTS sera ici utilisée en tant qu'interrogateur de fibre de Bragg. En effet, combiner ce spectromètre avec des fibres de Bragg très sensibles, telle qu'une cavité Fabry-Perot à réseaux de Bragg (GFPC) d'une longueur de 20 mm, permettra de mesurer des variations de température et de déformation très précises. Les applications des fibres de Bragg sont nombreuses, particulièrement dans la surveillance de structure de génie civil ou dans la sureté nucléaire avec des précisions de l'ordre du microstrain. Cependant, les capteurs par fibres de Bragg n'ont jamais atteint la sensibilité nécessaire aux observations en science de la terre. Une précision de quelques dizaines de nanostrain serait pourtant d'un intérêt majeur dans l'étude des processus volcaniques et sismologiques. Je présente dans cette thèse la première utilisation d'un tel spectromètre de Fourier associé à des capteurs de Bragg pour mesurer des déformations dans différentes gammes allant du millistrain au nanostrain. Dans un premier temps, des déformations sur une petite structure en béton armé amenée jusqu'à l'état limite de fissuration permettront de qualifier différents capteurs à fibres de Bragg dans leur milieu d'usage. Dans un deuxième temps, des mesures de déformations liées au phénomène de la marrée terrestre sont proposées. Ces mesures, effectuées au Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit (LSBB) de Rustrel, donnent des précisions de l'ordre de 30 nanostrains sur une courte base et ouvrent la voie à d'autres mesures de phénomènes géophysiques pour cet instrument. / SWIFTS, or Stationary-Wave Integrated Fourier-Transform Spectrometer, is an extremely integrated very high resolution spectrometer. This spectroscopy technology represents a major advance in the field and will be used here as a Fiber Bragg Gratings interrogator. Combining such a spectrometer with very sensitive Bragg sensors, like grating Fabry-Perot cavity (GFPC) as long as 20 mm, will allow to measure high precision temperature or strain variation. Applications of Bragg sensors are numerous, especially in structure monitoring and nuclear power plants safety. Despite promising capabilities, Bragg sensors never reached the desired sensibility for earth-science observation purposes. Present applications are restricted to civil-engineering strain-gauge sensors with microstrain sensitivity. However, the ability to detect and record signals of the order of a few tens of nanostrain is of great interest to monitor and model the volcanic and seismological processes. I demonstrate in this thesis the first use of a Fourier-Transform spectrometer combined with Fiber Bragg Sensors in a field configuration to achieve extremely high precision measurement on earth's crustal deformation. Precisions of thirty nanostrains on a very short base were achieved in the Low-Noise Underground Laboratory (LSBB) at Rustrel. Crustal monitoring opens the way for numerous applications especially in geophysics. A second study presented in this thesis aims at benchmarking several strain sensors based on optical fiber Bragg grating. For this purpose, two reinforced concrete beams have been tested in three points bending up to ultimate limit state.

Cette thèse est consacrée au développement de dispositifs accordables sur la base de cristaux photoniques unidimensionnels qui peuvent supporter des ondes de surface de Bloch (BSW). Tout d'abord, nous explorons les possibilités de contrôler la direction de propagation des BSW par le biais de la polarisation de la lumière incidente. Dans ce cas, nous gravons sur le dessus du cristal photonique 1D des structures passives de type réseau, qui permettent à la fois de coupler la lumière incidente aux BSWs et de se comporter comme une lame séparatrice ultracompacte contrôlée par la polarisation lumineuse. Nous avons testé ce type de coupleur sur des cristaux photoniques 1D fonctionnant dans l’air et dans l’eau. Ensuite, nous démontrons l'accordabilité des BSWs en ajoutant une fine couche active dans la structure photonique multicouche. Il s’agit d’un film mince de niobate de lithium monocristallin qui permet d’introduire des propriétés anisotropes dans le cristal photonique 1D. Différentes façons de fabriquer des cristaux photoniques 1D contenant du niobate de lithium monocristallin ont été développées dans le cadre de ce travail. Ces travaux nous ont permis d’explorer le concept de contrôle électro-optique des BSWs. / This thesis is devoted to develop tunable devices on the base of one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPhC) which can sustain Bloch surface waves (BSWs).First, we explore the possibilities to control the BSW propagation direction with polarization of incident light. In this case we manufacture additional passive structures such as gratings on the top of the 1DPhC, which are working both as a BSW launcher and polarization–controlled “wave-splitters”. We test this type of launcher in air and in water as an external medium. Then, we demonstrate the tunability of the BSW by adding an active layers into the multilayer stack. Here a crystalline X-cut thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) is used to introduce anisotropic properties to the whole 1DPhC. Different ways to manufacture 1D PhCs with LiNbO3 on the top would be described. Finally, we explore the concept of the electro-optically tuned BSW.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a aplicação das redes de Bragg em fibra óptica, como sensores no monitoramento e mapeamento térmico de um painel fotovoltaico instalado em ambiente aberto. Também foi analisada a capacidade desses sensores em detectar anomalias elétricas do painel, as quais são manifestadas pelas mudanças na temperatura. Devido ao fato de ser pioneiro no estudo da fibra óptica em painéis fotovoltaicos, o presente trabalho buscou comparar os resultados alcançados por esta tecnologia com os dados das demais técnicas de medição de temperatura, como por exemplo, o PT100 e câmera IR. Os ensaios foram realizados utilizando um painel fotovoltaico instalado em ambiente aberto, onde as suas variações de temperatura foram medidas por 27 sensores de fibra óptica instalados em sua superfície frontal. Durante todos os ensaios as condições ambientais de temperatura ambiente, nível de radiação solar e velocidade do vento foram monitorados. Para tal, essa tecnologia deve estar adaptada para ser integrada facilmente ao meio industrial. Com base nisso esta pesquisa apresenta o desenvolvimento de uma ferramenta computacional para duas tecnologias de interrogação de sensores baseados em Redes de Bragg em fibras óticas (FBGs). Além de adquirir os dados dos interrogadores a ferramenta computacional tem por objetivo processar os dados, para isso foi necessário o desenvolvimento de um algoritmo de detecção de picos. Este trabalho também apresenta os resultados obtidos de comparações entre as ferramentas comerciais para cada tecnologia de interrogação e a ferramenta desenvolvida durante esta pesquisa. / Optical sensors based on Fiber Bragg Gratings technologies are becoming a mature technology and starting to com now in the industrial area. Entre outras vantagens está o fato de que os sinais medidos podem ser transmitidos em distâncias muito grandes (da ordem de quilômetros), são compactos e leves. A técnica de medida convencional com sensor à FBG necessita de equipamentos de custo muito elevado, tornando-se inviável para aplicações de baixo custo. Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma nova técnica para medir temperatura com sensores a fibra óptica com grades de Bragg. Resultados experimentais de medidas feitas com a técnica desenvolvida mostram que é possível obter uma resolução de 0,5 mºC em medidas realizadas numa faixa de 30ºC. / Abstract: Due to the characteristic of being electrically passive and immune to electromagnetic interference, optical fiber sensors are becoming an excellent choice for several applications, as aerospace, distribution and generation of electrical energy, railway transports, and military equipment. Among other advantages, these sensors are compact, light and the measured signals can be transmitted for very long distances (in the order of kilometers). The existing techniques for temperature measurement using FBG sensors need expensive equipments, and therefore are not suitable for low cost applications. In this work a new technique to measure temperature with a extremely high resolution using FBG sensors is presented.
