Analysis Of The Growth Dynamics In Turkish Commercial Shipbuilding Sector And Its Prospects

Sartas, Murat 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to analyze the growth dynamics of the Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry between 1992 and 2008. It tests the hypotheses whether each of the 14 variables identified in the literature are valid in explaining the growth of Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry between 1992 and 2008 and if there is a dierence in the importance of these variables through utilizing secondary data as well as the results of the semi structured interviews made with 16 experts and managers representing all stakeholders in public institutions, NGOs, academicians and shipyards. It argues that clustering in Tuzla, growth of world GDP and trade and specialization in chemical tankers and container ships, and three-pillar outsourcing were the major reasons for the growth of Turkish commercial shipbuilding industry for the period between 1992 and 2008 and change in dollar exchange rate is a minor reason.

The family Lamiaceae is known for the use of many species as medicinal, condiments, aromatic and ornamental. Among them, Mentha piperita L. essential oil produces widely used in industries pharmaceutical, beverages, food and cosmetics. Leonurus sibiricus L., besides medicinal, produces terpenoids and phenolic substances with allelopathic effects, what explains its invasive behaviour. The present study aimed to evaluate the activity of methanolic extract of leaves of L. sibiricus in the development, gas exchange and metabolites of essential oil of M. piperita, cultivated in nutritive solution. Thus, were used concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 mg L-1 of methanolic extract of leaves of L. sibiricus in the hydroponic cultivation of M. piperita during part of its development cycle. The variables, shoot length, leaf area, dry matter of different organs, leaf area ratio, leaf weight ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilation rate, relative growth rate, dry matter distribution in several organs, gas exchange and composition of essential oils were evaluates at different times. The results showed that low concentrations of methanolic extract of L. sibiricus, 25 and 50 mg L-1, stimulated the development of M. piperita, stimulating the translocation of organic matter in plants, while this process affected in plants grown with 100 mg L-1, may have been responsible for yours less development. The gas exchange of M. piperita were influenced by the presence of methanolic extract and stimulated by concentrations 25 and 50 mg L-1. The methanolic extract of L. sibiricus influenced the levels of the essential oil components of M. piperita, depending on the concentration used, since, at lower concentrations, the plants showed higher levels of menthone and menthol, thus rendering an oil of quality and plants cultivated in the highest concentration showed higher levels of menthyl acetate and menthofuran... / The pre-sprouted sugarcane plantlets production system (PSS) is an innovative method to enhance crop multiplication rates. This system is greenhouse-grown, where correct irrigation management is essential to maintain the production quality. The purpose of this study was to detail construction and calibration of three low-cost weighing lysimeters and to use them to determine crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and crop coefficient (Kc), allied to growth analysis, of three sugarcane cultivars (CTC9005HP, RB966928 and SP87365), for irrigation management of greenhouse grown PSS. Three specific PSS weighing lysimeters were built in a greenhouse at São Martinho Mill (São Martinho S/A) and covered 0.6909 m2 (1179 mm x 586 mm) with 400 mm depth supported by 3 load cells. The lysimeters calibration showed precision and accuracy detection of equivalent-mass variations around 0.1 mm and hysteresis that did not compromise evapotranspiration measurements. Low cost materials were used in this study, excluding acquisition data system. Determined ETc and calculated FAO-56 ETo resulted in production cycle Kc values. Water requirement, determined by ETc, ranged from 3.0 to 6.9 mm d-1 in CTC9005HP, 3.1 to 6.8 mm d-1 in RB966928 and 2.9 to 6.6 mm d-1 in SP87365. Kc increased from 1.00 to 1.46 in CTC9005HP, 1.02 to 1.53 in RB966928 and 1.02 to 1.49 in SP87365. Treatments leaves pruning at 37 days after transference to greenhouse decreased ETc and, consequently, Kc. Stalk height was higher in SP87365 and CTC9005HP and stalk diameter in RB966928. SP87365 was superior to CTC9005HP in leaf evaluations. Total and stalk fresh and dry masses did not differ between cultivars. Evaluation periods presented difference in evaluations, confirming plants growth. Therefore, ETc and Kc were successfully determined by built precision low-cost lysimeters, allied to growth analysis, for PSS irrigation management in greenhouse grown.

Identification of Students in Late Elementary Grades With Reading Difficulties

Lai, Cheng-Fei, Lai, Cheng-Fei January 2012 (has links)
Piecewise latent class growth analysis (LCGA) was used to examine growth patterns in reading comprehension and passage reading fluency on easyCBM, a popular formative assessment system. Unlike conventional growth modeling, LCGA takes into account the heterogeneity of growth and may provide reliable predictions for later development. Because current methods for classifying students are still questionable, this modeling technique could be a viable alternative classification method to identifying students at risk for reading difficulty. Results from this study suggested heterogeneity in reading development. The latent classes and growth trajectories from the LCGA models were found to align closely with easyCBM's risk rating system. However, results from one school district did not fully generalize across another. The implications for future research on examining growth in reading are discussed.

Morfogênese e análise de crescimento de três capins tropicais em resposta à frequência de desfolhação / Morphogenesis and growth analysis of three tropical grasses in response to defoliation frequency

Faria, Ana Flávia Gouvéia de 06 October 2014 (has links)
RD Webster [syn. Urochloa brizantha (A. Rich.) / For the potential of cultivars most commonly used as Marandu palisadegrass {Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) RD Webster [syn. Urochloa brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf]; CIAT 6297}, with high forage production as Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), and grasses recently released as Mulato II (Convert HD 364®) (Brachiaria híbrid CIAT 36061) to be rationally and intensively explored it is necessary to understand how harvest frequency affects productive responses, under a physiological standpoint. The objective was to evaluate and describe the effect of harvest frequency on the growth characteristics of Mulato II, Marandu, and Tifton 85, as well as to study morphogenesis characteristics in Mulato II and Marandu. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The trial was carried out in Piracicaba - SP. Response variables included leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR) and leaf weight ratio (LWR). In addition phyllocron, number of live leaves per tiller (NLL), stem (SER) and leaf elongation rate (LER), leaf appearance rate (LApR), tiller density population (TDP) and leaf senescence (LSR). Mulato II is a option to intensify and diversify pasture grasses in tropical areas due to its high LAI, CGR, LWR and LAR. CGR was similar between Mulato II and Tifton 85 but LWR was highest to Mulato II. On the other hand, Tifton 85 starts the lowest LAI but has high NAR and reaches the same CGR to Mulato II, showing also as good forage option. The LApR and LER were higher an Marandu than Mulato II. Phyllochron was higher in Mulato II compared to Marandu. There was an interaction harvest frequency x year to phyllochron, and with 28 days the lowest phyllochron was at first year, and with 42 days there was no difference between two years. The LER, SER and LSR were higher with 42 days of harvest frequency. There was interaction harvest frequencies x year and cultivars x harvest frequencies to NLL. This was higher in the first year with 28 and 42 days, and at 42 days in both years studied. NLL was equal in Marandu and Mulato II with 28 days and higher in Marandu with 42 days. Marandu and Mulato II had higher NLL with 42 days. CGR is similar in Mulato II and Tifton 85, but the LWR is highest in Mulato II. Tifton 85 had lowest residual LAI, but high NAR and CGR similar to Mulato II. Mulato II and Tifton 85 used different mechanisms to achieve the same CGR. 28 days prioritizes leaf production. In morphogenesis, Marandu is the best because it presented the highest growth rates (LApR, LER, NLL) and lowest phyllochron. Despite Marandu was better than Mulato II, it did not reflect in greater herbage accumulation and nutritive value, due greater TDP in Mulato II. There was highest SER and LSR with 42 days, so 28 days is best to avoid high SER. When there is adequate precipitation, lowest frequency (28 days) increase harvest efficiency.

The potato crop has great economical importance for Brazil and São Paulo State. However, despite its importance, it lacks more information about physiology and mineral nutrition of this crop, limiting to obtain high yield, high quality and low production cost, since the peculiarities of each cultivar can make difference in management. Furthermore, the fertilizers rates commonly used in potato crop are high, which has a strong impact on production costs and environmental risks. To get the maximum production efficiency, it is necessary to understand the development of the plant, uptake and accumulation of nutrients in different stages of the plant development. The objective of this study was to evaluate growth, nutrient accumulation, tubers yield and the nutrient exportation in five potato cultivars. The experimental design was the completely randomized block in split-plot with four replications. The plots treatments consisted of potato cultivars (Ágata, Asterix, Atlantic, Markies and Mondial) and subplots were established by harvest time of plants, were carried out every 7 day after emergence to last harvest. Each plot consisted of 10 lines of 10 m in length. All cultivars showed slow growth until the beginning of the tubers bulking stage. Since this time until the end of the cycle, occurred the tubers development, with maximum dry matter accumulation rate focusing in this initial stage. Mondial cultivar took longer time to accumulate dry matter, presenting the highest growth rates in the final stage of the cycle. Ágata, Atlantic... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
