Exploring the dynamics and dark halos of elliptical galaxies at large radii

Dark matter is now accepted as an integral part of our universe, and galaxy dynamics have long provided the most convincing observational evidence for dark matter. Spiral galaxies have traditionally been used for these studies because of their more simple kinematics, however elliptical galaxies need to be understood as well. In this dissertation I present deep long-slit spectroscopy from the University of Texas’ Hobby-Eberly Telescope for a sample of elliptical galaxies. For a subsample of galaxies I fit axisymmetric orbit-superposition models with a range of dark halo density profiles. I find that all three galaxies modeled require a significant dark halo to explain their motions. However, the shape of the dark halo is not the expected NFW profile, but rather a profile with a flat central slope. I also discuss the galaxy masses, anisotropies, and stellar mass-to-light ratios. / text

Dynamics of Barred Galaxies in Triaxial Dark Matter Haloes / Dinâmica de galáxias barradas em halos triaxiais de matéria escura

Cosmological N-body simulations indicate that the dark matter haloes of galaxies should be generally triaxial. Yet, the presence of a baryonic disc is believed to modify the shape of the haloes. The goal of this thesis is to study how bar formation is affected by halo triaxiality and how, in turn, the presence of the bar influences the shape of the halo. We performed a series of collisionless and hydrodynamical numerical simulations, using elliptical discs as initial conditions. Triaxial halos tend to become more spherical and we show that part of the circularisation of the halo is due to disc growth, but part must be attributed to the formation of a bar. We find that the presence of gas in the disc is a more efficient factor than halo triaxiality in inhibiting the formation of a strong bar. / As simulações cosmológicas de N-corpos indicam que os halos de matéria escura das galáxias devem ser em geral triaxiais. Contudo, acredita-se que a presença de um disco bariônico seja capaz de alterar a forma do halo. O objetivo desta tese é o de estudar como a formação de barras é afetada pela triaxialidade do halo e como, por sua vez, a presença da barra influencia a forma do halo. Nós realizamos uma série de simulações numéricas acolisionais e hidrodinâmicas, utilizando discos elípticos como condições iniciais. Os halos triaxiais tendem a se tornar mais esféricos e nós mostramos que parte da circularização do halo é devida ao crescimento do disco, mas parte precisa ser atribuída à formação da barra. Notamos que a presença de gás no disco é um fator mais eficiente do que a triaxialidade do halo em inibir a formação de uma barra forte.

Les défauts d'irradiation dans les minéraux argileux: des marqueurs de la mobilité de l'uranium dans le contexte des gisements d'uranium associés à une discordance

Cette étude présente les travaux menés sur trois grands groupes de minéraux argileux (kaolins, illite, sudoite (chlorite di-trioctaédrique)) caractéristiques des halos d'altération entourant les gisements d'uranium de type discordance, dans le but de révéler les paléocirculations d'uranium dans les bassins intracratoniques d'âge méso-Protérozoïque (1,2-1,6 Ga). Grâce à la Spectrométrie de Résonance Paramagnétique Electronique (RPE), nous avons pu mettre en évidence la persistance des défauts structuraux au sein des kaolins contemporains de la diagenèse du bassin, et démontrer l'existence inédite de défauts relativement stables au sein des illites et des sudoites contemporaines de la mise en place des gisements uranifères. Ainsi, le défaut principal de l'illite (centre Ai) et le défaut principal de la sudoite (centre As) se caractérisent par un signal anisotrope avec, respectivement, des composantes gt = 2,003 et g// = 2,051, et gt = 2,005 et g// = 2,051. Comme pour les kaolins (kaolinite/dickite), les défauts principaux de l'illite et de la sudoite sont orientés perpendiculairement au plan (ab), situés au niveau de la liaison Si-O tétraédrique. Cependant, leurs stabilités thermiques semblent différentes. L'observation d'échantillons issus de différentes zones (stériles, anomales ou minéralisées) du bassin de l'Athabasca (Canada) a permis d'identifier une évolution parallèle entre la concentration en défauts actuellement mesurée dans les différents minéraux argileux et la proximité de zones minéralisées. Ainsi, les argiles apparaissent comme des traceurs potentiels des zones où ont circulé les solutions riches en uranium.

Contraintes sur la distribution de masse des galaxies par cisaillement gravitationnel

L'optique gravitationnelle est desormais devenue un outil populaire pour mesurer les distributions de masse des structures sur des echelles tres differentes. Le cisaillement cosmique permet d'etudier les structures a tres grande echelle, et la combinaison des cisaillements forts et faibles permet de contraindre la distribution de masse des amas de galaxies. Dans cette these, je vais m'interesser a l'etude des halos de matiere noire en utilisant la technique du "galaxy-galaxy lensing". Une telle technique permet l'etude de la distribution de masse des galaxies de champ aussi bien que des galaxies d'amas en utilisant des donnees de bonne qualite, a partir de telescopes terrestres ou depuis l'espace. L'idee est la suivante : l'observation des formes de galaxies distantes qui ont ete deformees gravitationnelement par des galaxies d'avant-plan nous permet de contraindre la distribution de masse des galaxies d'avant-plan. Etant donne que la distortion d'une galaxie lentille sur une galaxie distante est tres petite devant la largeur de la distribution en ellipticite des galaxies, la seule facon de mesurer cet effet est de considerer le probleme statistiquement. Par consequent, le galaxy-galaxy lensing permet de contraindre les proprietes d'une population de haloo de matiere noire, et la significance des contraintes dependra du nombre de paires avant-plan/arriere-plan. Un avantage de cette approche statistique est qu'elle permet de sonder le potentiel gravitationnel des halos de galaxies jusqu'a un rayon tres grand ou les methodes plus traditionnelles ne sont pas applicables car il est peu probable de rencontrer des traceurs dynamiques et hydrodynamiques a ce rayon. Je presente une etude theorique du phenomene, en appliquant une methode de maximum de vraisemblance sur des donnees simulees, et en introduisant des profils de masse decrivant les halos de galaxies. Le but de ce travail est d'etudier differentes configurations observationnelles et de montrer quelles sont les contraintes que l'on peut esperer obtenir sur les proprietes des halos de galaxies. J'applique ensuite la methode proposee afin d'etudier les proprietes des galaxies residants dans des amas lentilles massifs. Avec le developpement des surveys grand champs, la technique du galaxy-galaxy lensing sera tres utile pour caracteriser la distribution de masse des galaxies en fonction du redshift, de l'environnement et de la morphologie.

Quasars and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies as Probes of Dark Matter / Kvasarer och ytljussvaga galaxer som redskap för att studera den mörka materian

<p>Most of the matter in the Universe appears to be in some form which does not emit or absorb light. While evidence for the existence of this dark matter has accumulated over the last seventy years, its nature remains elusive. In this thesis, quasars and low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) are used to investigate the properties of the dark matter. </p><p>Quasars are extremely bright light sources which can be seen over vast distances. These cosmic beacons may be used to constrain dark matter in the form of low-mass, compact objects along the line of sight, as such objects are expected to induce brightness fluctuations in quasars through gravitational microlensing effects. Using a numerical microlensing model, we demonstrate that the uncertainty in the typical size of the optical continuum-emitting region in quasars represents the main obstacle in this procedure. We also show that, contrary to claims in the literature, microlensing fails to explain the observed long-term optical variability of quasars. Here, quasar distances are inferred from their redshifts, which are assumed to stem from the expansion of the Universe. Some astronomers do however defend the view that quasar redshifts could have a different origin. A number of potential methods for falsifying claims of such non-cosmological redshifts are proposed. </p><p>As the ratio of dark to luminous matter is known to be unusually high in LSBGs, these objects have become the prime targets for probing dark matter halos around galaxies. Here, we use spectral evolutionary models to constrain the properties of the stellar populations in a class of unusually blue LSBGs. Using rotation curve data obtained at the ESO Very Large Telescope, we also investigate the density profiles of their dark halos. We find our measurements to be inconsistent with the predictions of the currently favoured cold dark matter scenario.</p>

Improvements to the Calculation of Indirect Signals of Diffuse Gamma-rays and Neutrinos from Dark Matter Annihilation

A new formalism is presented for calculating the mean intensity spectrum and angular power spectrum of gamma-rays or neutrinos from extragalactic annihilating dark matter, taking into account the dependence of the relative motions of the annihilating particles on the annihilation cross section. To model the large scale dark matter distribution of mass and relative velocities, the halo distribution model is comprehensively summarized, and extended to include a universal radial profile of the particles' velocity variance, based on results from N-body computer simulations of dark matter halos. A velocity variance profile, associated with the NFW density profile, is proposed by enforcing a power-law profile of the pseudo phase-space density. This allows the large-scale velocity distribution to be described by virialized, gravitationally bound dark matter halos, as opposed to thermal motions used to describe the velocity distribution in the early Universe. The recent particle motion history of the Universe is presented for the described model. Sample extragalactic gamma-ray intensities from dark matter annihilation are shown for dark matter annihilating with p-wave, according to a relative-velocity-weighted annihilation cross section sigmav = a + bv^2, for constants a and b, with examples taken from supersymmetric models. For thermally produced dark matter, the p-wave suppresses the signal intensity. If b/a > 10^6, the p-wave hardens the intensity spectrum by an estimated factor of 1 + (6b/a)delta_I (E_gamma), and increases the angular power spectrum by a factor also depending on new coefficients (delta_Cl)^(1) (E_gamma ) and (delta_Cl)^(2) (E_gamma ). The energy-dependence of the new p-wave coefficients delta_I , (delta_Cl)^(1) (E_gamma ), and (delta_Cl)^(2) (E_gamma ) are shown for various annihilation spectra. Sample intensity spectra are also presented for Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation. The intensity of neutrinos from dark matter annihilation is also considered. The variations between the dark matter annihilation signals for different particle phenomenologies suggest that particle physics constraints are possible from an observed indirect detection signal. Calculations of the annihilation signal from the galactic halo are also shown. The extragalactic signal's intensity is found to be consistent in magnitude with the galactic intensity?within the uncertainty of the models of the dark matter distribution?when looking out from the galactic plane. This suggests that the total cosmic signal may have significant contributions from both components.

Patterns of distal alteration zonation around Antamina Cu-Zn skarn and Uchucchacua Ag-base metal vein deposits, Peru : mineralogical, chemical and isotopic evidence for fluid composition, and infiltration, and implications for mineral exploration

Intrusion-related, carbonate rock–hosted replacement deposits are an important source of global base metal production that includes: Cu-Zn skarn, Zn-Pb-Ag carbonate replacement and Ag-base metal deposits. These deposits are located in multiple geological settings and are commonly associated with low-grade Cu-Mo calc-alkaline porphyry districts. Visible alteration halos to these deposits range from ten to hundreds of metres around high temperature skarn deposits, being small to imperceptible around the distal relatively low temperature members of this clan. Patterns of visible and cryptic alteration are described and constrained in this study particularly around paleo-fluid flow zones at different distances and elevations from the ore centre. This was done in order to identify the large-scale zonation, mechanisms, and effects of fluid infiltration especially into the distal portions of these deposits. The main alteration tracers employed included mineralogy, major and trace element geochemistry, oxygen and carbon isotopes, and the fluorescent signature of calcite veins associated with the fluids conduits. Two areas were selected for this study: the large Cu-Zn Antamina skarn and the Ag-base metal Uchucchacua vein deposits in the Peruvian Central Andes as these deposits represent the end-members of the polymetallic carbonate rock-hosted deposits and hence, provide an excellent opportunity to examine the margins and upper sections of these hydrothermal systems. Geochronological analyses of intrusive dikes were used to establish the magmatic and hydrothermal evolution associated with mineralization, as well as the genetic linkage between proximal and distal portions of the mineralizing system at Antamina. Oxygen, carbon and strontium isotope data of vein minerals is also used to constrain the temperature of the fluids proximal and distal to the magmatic centre. Chemical data of fluorescent and non-fluorescent veins were used to determine the main activators of fluorescence and to constrain its relationship with mineralizing fluids. In summary, results of this research identify a large-scale zonation of visible and cryptic alteration around paleo-fluid flow zones demonstrating the linkage between Ag-base metal veins, replacement and skarn deposits. Anomalous halos determined throughout Antamina and Uchucchacua deposits may contribute to the development of a more systematic exploration methodology for these types of deposits.
