Astier-Perret, Sandrine 04 1900 (has links)
As part of the topical writings on the concept of place, this Master’s thesis applies the sociocriticism tools to the analysis of the representation of the home in contemporary Quebec novels, especially those of Catherine Mavrikakis, Elise Turcotte and Ying Chen. This analysis focuses on the Home sociogram as the core operational concept, its two main conflicting components being the "Home Sweet Home" and the "Haunted House". The deciphering work leans on the characteristics of this couple as expressed in the selected writings. While our time is defined by a "private space hyper-investment", as expressed by Gilles Deleuze, the house in the Quebec novels of the 2000's appears more as a location imprinted by the haunting, far from the reassuring image of the home sweet home as advertised in our society. Ghosts and wraiths invade this intimate space and become actors of the everyday life, revealing the profound unease of the occupants and the repression of a problematic past. The subject is therefore confronted to a "disturbing strangeness" in the heart of its home.

Auger Gosselin, Louis 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the ways in which IMAX 3-D films positions its spectator. First, we look at the history of 3-D cinema, from its origins to the inauguration of IMAX 3-D in 1986. We argue that for the first 70 years of its history, 3-D cinema was staged as a return to the cinema of attractions, and that this aesthetic was an obstacle to its institutionalization in the mid-50’s and 80’s. Then, we describe the “IMAX experience” and argue that IMAX films induce a state of immersion and, at the same time, draw the viewer’s attention to the presence of the apparatus and the act of mediation. In analysing the movies Sea Monsters: a Prehistoric Adventure and Haunted Castle, we demonstrate that this tension between viewer immersion and medium reflexivity serves to glorify the IMAX trademark. Furthermore, we examine the relationship between the punctual structure imposed by the logic of attractions and the narrative line held by each and every IMAX film.

The orgy is over : phantasies, fake realities and the loss of boundaries in Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted

Zanini, Claudio Vescia January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims at presenting Chuck Palahniuk‟s novel Haunted as a portrait and symptom of the behavior perceived in the postmodern Western society, whose values, according to the author himself, correspond to “the opposite of the American Dream”. The main characteristic of such society is the individuals‟ difficulty in dealing with demands and constant changes in the individual, social and psychological spheres, a fact observed in the work of this American writer through the presence of marginal characters in a more often than not apparently unconscious search of self-acceptance or social adaptation. The reading proposed is mainly based on the writings of French theoretician Jean Baudrillard, who presents the assumption that the contemporary world is in a “post-orgy” state, haunted by three phantasies he denominates cancer, transvestitism and terrorism, which symbolize contemporary social issues related to politics, sexuality, communication and human relationships, among other aspects. The concepts by Baudrillard that underlie the analysis are: 'post-orgy state', 'hyperreality', 'simulation', 'virulence', 'seduction' and 'phantasies'. The work also presents the features of the literature produced by Chuck Palahniuk and its newly-started critical fortune, highlighting the main aspects of postmodern society present in his works, culminating with an approximation of Haunted to the postmodern variation of Gothic literature, besides a comparison between the dynamics established among the characters in the novel to the one perceived in reality shows and mock-documentaries. The conclusion strengthens aspects in the structure, imaginary and content of the novel that enable the definition of Haunted as portrait and symptom of a new social organization, resulting from the inevitable changes the world goes through.

Hauntology Man

Wright, Adam Michael 05 1900 (has links)
Hauntology Man, a 48-minute documentary, follows former UNT Professor, Dr. Shaun Treat, as he leads a walking ghost tour of downtown Denton, Texas. As the expedition moves from storefront to storefront, each stop elicits a new tale. But, as Dr. Treat points out, the uncertainties of history are the real ghosts. That is, rather than simply presenting a "haunted history" of Denton, it's more accurate to say this movie's center resides at the precipice of a "haunting history." Not all ghost stories need spectres. Sometimes not knowing is ghost enough.

Scare if You Dare: A Look into Scare Acting

Goss, Hana 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Scare acting has always been the unsung villains of the entertainment industry. For three months of the year, for about five minutes of a haunted house, they get attention. However, the work scare actors do to is way more than just a five second “boo.” Scare actors have been at the beginning of theatre and continue to influence modern entertainment. Even though the patrons may be the ones feeling the danger, scare actors may be even more in danger than them. Each scare actor is unique from their looks to their moves. It might be take a lot of nerve to go into a haunted house, but it takes a lot more to work it.

Afaga-me as tripas a feiura da porcaria desses romances : experiência estética e poiética escatológica em Haunted, de Chuck Palahniuk e Acenos e Afagos, de João Gilberto Noll, dois romances contemporâneos / Me acaricia las tripas la fealdad de la porquería de estas novelas : experiencia estética y poiética escatológica en Haunted, de Chuck Palahniuk, e Acenos e Afagos, de João Gilberto Noll, dos novelas contemporáneas / Strokes my guts the ugliness of filth these novels : a esthetic experience and eschatological poietic in Haunted, Chuck Palahniuk, and Acenos e Afagos, João Gilberto Noll, two contemporary novels

It is a thesis that highlights the literary quality of the two novels mentioned above. This is to be done through a proposal of reading, based on categories worked by some theoreticians, such as the grotesque, disgust, abjection, the uncanny and the sublime. To achieve this goal, I focus on the crisis of beauty, studying this concept from the perspective of Ancient Greek philosophers, the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment and 20th Century. Furthermore, this deals with a proposal of poetics study that, from the “disgust” perspective, emphasizes the importance of physiognomic sense in the bodily perception, which facilitates spectators to experience emotions about the artwork: the "simple" bodily pleasure becomes “reflective” and “aesthetic” pleasure. Within this process of aesthetic experience (aisthesis, poiesis, katharsis), and through the eschatological poietics, I point out (or address) the ugly of these novels of Palahniuk and Noll, as well as the artwork, presenting it as an aesthetic category that ends to be simply the opposite of beauty and emerges as the pinnacle of another canon.
