Relationship Between Lower Body Strength, Countermovement Jump Height, and Optimal Drop Jump Drop Height

The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between back squat one-repetition maximum relative to body mass (1RMrel), countermovement jump height (CMJH), and optimal drop height in drop jump (DHopt). Fifteen male participants with various sport backgrounds and training experience completed a one repetition maximum (1RM) back squat, maximum countermovement jump (CMJ), and drop jumps (DJ) from incrementally increasing drop heights to determine which drop height elicited the greatest jump height. The DHopt testing protocol was unique in that smaller increments were used to determine DHopt compared to what has been reported in literature previously. Pearson correlation coefficients revealed that DHopt had small (r=0.214) and moderate (r=0.464) relationships with 1RMrel and CMJH, respectively. A second analysis (n=13) was conducted after two participants (i.e. powerlifters) were identified as possibly being representative of a different population. The second analysis found that DHopt had strong relationships with 1RMrel (r=0.645) and CMJH (r=0.690). Results from this study seem to suggest that individuals with greater 1RMrel and CMJH tend to have a higher DHopt. However, this relationship may not be observed among all populations due to likely differences in sport background, genetics, and/or training experience.

The aim of this thesis is to test the accuracy of the heights measured by GNSS RTK with service providers CZEPOS and Trimble VRS Now. The thesis deals with precise of height measurement with the influence of surrounded obstacles, such as multipath, fading with the tall buildings, presence of high-voltage lines, limited shadow horizons at the edge of the forest, and measurement under the ideal conditions. The work also deals with the comparison of the period initialization of these monitored conditions. In the locations mentioned a network of test points was built. For measuring GNSS Leica System 1200 apparatus was used. It was measured always five times in five-second epochs and three times twenty-second epochs for each provider in five locations and thirty points during the mornings and afternoons. For independent height comparison the technical levelling was used. The outcome can be applied in practical use.

Title: Analysis of work at heights and above free depth at the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic and civilian sector Objectives: Describe the current status of work at height in the civilian sector and the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic and compare work at height in the areas: legal regulations, qualification levels, training courses, training centers and equipment. Analyze the height interventions of FRS CR in 2016-2018. Methods: Data collection from internal staff, study of available literature and subsequent research. Comparison of the current situation in given aspects. The analyzes were divided according to the types of interventions, which were given the frequency, location and time distribution in the given years. Photosynthetic Capacity, Leaf Size and Plant Height in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Plant breeders often examine leaf size, plant height and photosynthetic capacity in an effort to increase wheat yield. This study was concerned with the relationship between these parameters in dwarf and semidwarf wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) with a wide range in flag leaf size. Photosynthetic capacity was measured at anthesis using photosynthesis versus intercellular CO2 response curves to determine maximum photosynthetic rate and ribulose-1,5- bisphosphate carboxylase efficiency. Leaf area, chlorophyll concentration, stomatal density, interveinal distance and dry mass partitioning were also examined. Smaller flag leaves had greater carboxylation efficiency and closer vein spacing. Dwarf wheat had higher chlorophyll concentrations and maximum photosynthetic rates at anthesis than the taller semi-dwarfs. Dwarf cultivars had lower photosynthetic rates before anthesis, suggesting preanthesis feedback inhibition of photosynthesis, possibly due to a smaller sink capacity of its stem.

Acute Effects of Antagonist Stretching on Jump Height and Knee Extension Peak Torque

A great deal of research has shown decrements in force and power following static stretching. There has been little research investigating the acute effects of static stretching of the antagonist on the expression of strength and power. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of static stretching of the antagonist muscles on a variety of strength and power measures. Sixteen active males were tested for vertical jump height and isokinetic torque production in a slow knee extension (KES) at 60°/s and a fast knee extension (KEF) at 300°/s. Electromyography was taken during knee extension tests for the vastus lateralis and the biceps femoris muscles. Participants performed these tests in a randomized counterbalanced order with and without prior antagonist stretching. All variables for stretching and non-stretching treatments were compared using paired t tests at an alpha of .05. Paired samples t tests revealed a significant (p = .034) difference between stretch KEF and non-stretch KEF conditions. There was no significant (p > .05) difference between KES stretch and non-stretch conditions. Vertical jump height was significantly (p = .011) higher for the stretching treatment than the non-stretching treatment. Vertical jump power was also significantly higher (p = .005) in the stretch versus the non-stretch condition. Paired samples t test indicated no significant (p > .05) difference between testing conditions for electromyography, represented as a percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). These results suggest that stretching the antagonist hamstrings prior to high speed isokinetic knee extension increases torque production. It also demonstrated that stretching the hip flexors and dorsi flexors may enhance jump height and power. Practitioners may use this information to acutely enhance strength and power performances.

Associations between traits (blood pressure and body height growth) and reproductive timing related genetic variants from genome-wide association studies

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified many common genetic variants that are associated with women’s reproductive timing characteristics including ages at menarche and at natural menopause. However, the associations of these variants with other human health related phenotypes such as blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and body height growth have not been well studied. No published studies to our knowledge have directly assessed the genetic influence of reproductive timing related variants on the aforementioned common traits. A better understanding of pleiotropic effects of these variants is important because it will help elucidate the precise mechanisms of common traits/diseases such as hypertension which have not been fully understood so far, and give clues for developing better solutions for disease prevention and treatment. We, therefore, conducted three studies to explore genetic variant effects on blood pressure and body height growth. In the first study, we analyzed data from a local cohort of 601 healthy adolescents from Indianapolis schools. Mixed effect model analysis revealed that 11 reproductive related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were significantly associated with blood pressure in the study subjects. In order to assess if these genetic effects extended to the adult blood pressure, we performed the second study to investigate the genetic effect on blood pressure in adults. We used the summary statistics obtained from the two large international GWAS consortia, the Blood Pressure Consortium and the ReproGen Consortium. Bivariate analyses showed that more than 100 SNPs were associated with both blood pressure and reproductive timing. As the blood pressure development is closely related to somatic growth, we conducted the third study to exam the genetic effect of reproductive-timing related variants on the linear growth from the aforementioned local cohort. We identified 8 genetic variants significantly associated with the catch-up of linear growth in the study subjects. In conclusion, these three studies collectively provided evidence in support of the pleiotropic effects of the reproductive timing variants, suggesting the common genetic basis underlying the correlated traits. Multi-Baseline Interferometric Sar for Iterative Height Estimation

Multiple SAR interferograms with judiciously selected height sensitivities can be iteratively combined to create a high accuracy digital elevation map. An initial height estimate is refined by iteratively using larger baselines to obtain a height estimation accuracy limited by the spatial decorrelation of the antenna baseline. Spatial filtering is used to reduce the propagation of errors for accurate height estimation. Images containing regions isolated by phase discontinuities, as often found in urban environments, can be resolved by this iterative multi-baseline technique. Computationally demanding and potentially unreliable phase unwrapping is not required to determine scene elevation using SAR inMultiple SAR interferograms with judiciously selected height sensitivities can be iteratively combined to create a high accuracy digital elevation map.
