Size- and sex-related aspects of the ecology of the hermit crab Clibanarius digueti Bouvier (Decapoda: Anomura: Diogenidae).Harvey, Alan Wayne. January 1988 (has links)
I examine some of the ecological and evolutionary implications of body size in hermit crabs, with special emphasis on the upper intertidal species Clibanarius digueti. In Chapter 1 I show that body size had a far greater effect than species identity on desiccation tolerance for shell-less individuals of C. digueti, Paguristes anahuacus, Pagurus lepidus, and Phimochirus roseus. In contrast with other intertidal taxa, there was no correlation between the upper tidal limit of a species and the expected desiccation tolerance of an average-sized, shell-less individual of that species. This suggests that the gastropod shell that normally houses the hermit crab is sufficient to eliminate desiccation as a community-structuring force in this guild. Clibanarius digueti exhibits strong sexual dimorphism in body size, with almost no overlap in size between adult males and females. In Chapter 2 I show that sexual differences in the intensity of selection on size favor this dimorphism. Specifically, male mating success depended more strongly on body size than did female fecundity. In fact, the rate of increase in fecundity with body size equalled the lowest previously recorded for decapod crustaceans, suggesting that sexual size dimorphism in this species may depend more on weak fecundity selection on females than on strong sexual selection on males. Documenting contemporary selection on a character, however, is not the same as documenting that selection caused the character to evolve. Chapter 3 presents the first empirical test in a single species (C. digueti) of the hypothesis that sexual size dimorphism represents an evolutionary response to sexual differences in selection on size. The test is based on a general model that predicts crab body size as a function of shell limitations, shell fit and body size. Both males and females occupied optimally sized shells of non-preferred species, but the greater the desirability of a shell species, the greater the tendency for males to occupy tighter-fitting shells than females. Males also apparently suffere higher mortality than similarly-sized females. According to the general model, these results agree with the hypothesis that differential selection is causally involved in the evolution of sexual size dimorphism, and contradict the alternative hypothesis that energetic constraints on females produce the dimorphism.

His father came from a long line of tradesmen and professional people and was a doctor and prominent citizen in the Pennsylvanian town in which his son was born. Although no musical tendencies existed on the father's side, there were numerous accounts of musical abilities in his mother's family. Marguerite Beatty Barber was a talented pianist and the sister of the celebrated contralto, Louise Homer. At the age of six, Samuel Barber began to play the piano and a year later began to compose. Although his mother helped to write down some of his first compositions, neither she nor her husband made any attempt to develop a possible prodigy. Instead, they tried to encourage him to indulge in the activities of any normal American boy.

No presente trabalho caracterizou-se o padrão de utilização de conchas pelo ermitão Paguristes tortugae, habitante do infralitoral da Ilha Anchieta (Ubatuba), analisando-se comparativamente o padrão de seleção e de ocupação de conchas no ambiente natural e em laboratório. Para o estudo de ocupação de conchas no ambiente, os indivíduos foram coletados mensalmente (janeiro a dezembro/1998) na região infralitorânea de quatro áreas da Ilha, por mergulho autônomo. Os ermitões foram medidos quanto ao comprimento e largura do escudo cefalotorácico, altura e comprimento do própodo quelar, contados, determinado seu sexo e pesados. Para os experimentos de seleção de conchas, os animais foram mantidos vivos em aquário de vidro. Nestes experimentos laboratoriais, os animais foram retirados de suas conchas e colocados com um número suficiente de conchas com tamanhos apropriados. Após 72h os animais e as conchas escolhidas foram analisados quanto ao peso dos ermitões e das conchas e as respectivas medidas. A escolha quanto ao tipo de concha foi analisada de acordo com a porcentagem de ocupação de uma espécie em relação à outra. Para a escolha quanto ao tamanho da concha, avaliou-se as análises de regressão entre as dimensões dos ermitões e das conchas. Um total de 2429 exemplares de P. tortugae foram analisados (1092 machos, 495 fêmeas não-ovígeras e 842 fêmeas ovígeras), ocupando 21 espécies de conchas de gastrópodos. Este perfil, indicativo de ampla diversidade no padrão de ocupação, apresentou Pisania auritula (35.49%), Cerithium atratum (27.83%) e Morula nodulosa (12.70%) como as mais ocupadas. Os machos (38.46%) e as fêmeas ovígeras (38.00%) ocuparam, em maior porcentagem, as conchas de P. auritula, enquanto que as fêmeas não-ovígeras (39.40%) ocuparam C. atratum. Houve dimorfismo sexual quanto ao tamanho em favor dos machos e, a razão sexual foi de 1:1.2, em favor das fêmeas. Verificou-se que as conchas mais ocupadas foram as menos adequadas. Leucozonia nassa foi a mais adequada tanto no ambiente quanto no laboratório, corroborando a hipótese de que a ocupação das conchas está associada ao ambiente em que vivem e à sua disponibilidade. A maior correlação ocorreu entre as dimensões dos ermitões e o peso da concha, sendo esta a relação que melhor caracterizou a escolha e a ocupação das conchas por P. tortugae. Quanto ao sexo, as fêmeas ovígeras apresentaram as melhores correlações, estando melhor adequadas ao peso e ao volume interno da concha, favorecendo a fecundidade e o processo reprodutivo anual. Tal condição foi corroborada com os experimentos de laboratório, onde constatou-se que as fêmeas ovígeras apresentaram preferência por conchas com maior volume interno (L. nassa e C. atratum). Methodology on the Analysis of Shell Utilization of Hermit Crabs, Diogenes spp. in Shallow WatersHu, Chieh-Shen 30 August 2010 (has links)
¡@The shell utilization of two sympatric hermit carb species was studied in shallow waters of Kaohsiung and Pingtung, southern Taiwan. Principal components, canonical variates and univariate analysis was used to compare three major variables of shell resource: species, size, and shape between species and sites.
The regression between crab and shell and shell adequacy index (SAI) revealed that two species shared the same resource which had shell size limitation in the field had different pattern. Shells used by Diogenes rectimanus were larger than those uesd by D. nitidimanus of same size. But the utilization pattern was the same under a shell sufficient condition in the laboratory, suggesting that there was no resource partitioning or competition between these two species.
The size of shell composed a continuous morphological overlap at four different sites and shown a good consistency with crab size. This revealed the utilization of crabs in different size selected different shells and suggested a status of sufficient resource utilization. Although the shell resource were highly similar, but different composition of shell species and other factors could caused variances in shell size and shape between four sites, and caused crab size divergence among different populations.

Contributions to the taxonomy of South African hermit crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguroidea) – integrating microCT scanning and barcodingLandschoff, Jannes 16 August 2018 (has links)
Hermit crabs form an important component of the marine benthos and globally more than 1,200 species have been described. In the unique bioregion of South Africa, hermit crabs are poorly known, and the last taxonomic revision of the group was that of K. H. Barnard in 1950, who recorded only 32 species. This study combines morphological taxonomy, threedimensional (3D) micro-computed tomography (µCT) visualisations, and molecular barcoding to add to, revise, and provide an updated listing of, the regional fauna. The first section of the thesis comprises four chapters, each giving a detailed account of a species either new to science, or to the region. The pagurid hermit crab Goreopagurus poorei, a new species and genus record to the country, is reported and described from deep sea habitats along the Agulhas Shelf, extending the distribution by >10,000 km across the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, three species are described as new to science, one each from the three most common families. The first of these, a deep-water species from a genus of the family Parapaguridae that was previously unknown to South Africa, Paragiopagurus atkinsonae n. sp., is fully described and illustrated, and compared with two other parapagurids that each play a dominant role in the regional benthic offshore invertebrate community. The other two species new to science, Diogenes n. sp. from the family Diogenidae, and Pagurus n. sp. from the family Paguridae, inhabit coastal reefs in subtidal waters off southern KwaZulu-Natal. For the first time in crustacean taxonomy, species descriptions, particularly the one of Pagurus n. sp., are informed by, or based on, µCT imagery of calcified body parts. Following on this technique, Chapter 6 is a short presentation of the 3D raw dataset of seven µCT scans of types and rare museum specimens used in this thesis, which is made publicly available for download. The taxonomic use of the scanning method, with disseminating volumetric data of hermit crabs, is discussed briefly. The final section investigates the fauna as a whole. In Chapter 7, 194 cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene segments (COI ‘barcodes’) of 43 nominal species plus 12 additional putative species (n = 55 species-like units) were used to validate morphological identifications. Testing this dataset revealed high barcoding efficacy, with nearly 99% identification success rates, and with the best Kimura 2-parameter distance to safely delimit species of hermit crabs of about 3.5%. Chapter 8 updates the regional fauna and provides taxonomic accounts for 62 nominal species which have either been added subsequent to the previous monographic review, or which have undergone taxonomic revision since that time. Of these, 12 are added for the first time here, increasing the number of known South African hermit crab species to 72, an expansion of 56% since Barnard, and about 20% since a recent species list published by W. Emmerson in 2016. Because colour images are provided for 51 out of 72 species, Chapter 8 can also be used as a preliminary guide. However, this study has shown that the hermit crabs of South Africa are by far more diverse than originally thought, and the summary, which includes only the 72 nominal taxa and none of the additional 10 putative species included in the barcoding dataset, is speculated to be only 60–70% complete. Future taxonomic work, especially in the genera Diogenes and Paguristes, will most likely result in many more species descriptions. Therefore, this current study is to be seen as important step towards a fully illustrated taxonomic catalogue on the South African hermit crabs to be produced in the near future.

This essay is a study of the portrayal of the theme of alienation in Eugene Ionesco's novel The hermit. In my study I examine the different ways in which the theme of alienation is portrayed and how the cause of the narrator's experience of alienation can be found in ideological, psychological and existential conflicts that the narrator has to face. The result is an experience of das unheimliche, a Freudian concept, which is a kind of uncanny detachment that the narrator experiences, when he is put up against an invisible force that lurks in the perifery of the world, which is portrayed in the story. The meaning of the ideological conflict is a portrayal of man's situation in a world that is ruled by capitalism, with marxism as a positive leveler and the meaning of the psychological conflict is a conflict in the narrator's own inner reality. The meaning of the existential conflict is a portrayal of man's situation in a world absent of God. The novel by Ionesco points at these conflicts and also offers a solution to the limitations, that are caused by alienation by transcending them. In my study I focus on the function of language, biblical imagery, allegory and the theories that are being used to define the ideological (marxist theory) and existential (Albert Camus' theory of the absurd) conflicts. In my analysis I have also used Camus' The stranger in comparison with Ionesco's novel.

Cette thèse est une réflexion sur la vitalité de la thématique du désert dans le domaine de la littérature. Cette thématique, dans le cas présent, est indissociable de celle du monachisme primitif, puisque le corpus que nous interrogeons, constitué de : Les Marches de sable, Marie d’Égypte et Macaire Le Copte, se présente comme hagiographique. Le lien entre désert et monachisme dans ces trois romans est au centre de cette réflexion qui s’efforce de comprendre et de mettre en lumière la nécessité pour des écrivains contemporains de reprendre cette thématique. Le désert nous est tantôt apparu comme le lieu de l’expérience spirituelle dans toute son ambivalence : espace de tentation par le diable, mais aussi espace d’élévation ascétique. Tantôt, il est un prétexte qui permet aux écrivains de porter un regard lucide sur la société actuelle, en voie de réification voire tout simplement d’ores et déjà réifiée. Pour finir, le désert nous est apparu comme un moyen pour ces trois écrivains de mettre en évidence leur conception non seulement de l’espace littéraire, qui apparaît de fait comme un espace paradoxal en ce sens qu’il peut à la fois être un espace de partage et un espace de réclusion, mais aussi de l’écrivain et de son travail. To the writers, it is also a way to bring a lucid eye to the current society which is being reified because one cannot say only that it is already reified. In conclusion, to these three writers, not only the desert is a way to evidence their conception of literary space which really appears as a paradoxical space as it can at the same time be a sharing and a seclusion space, but also a writer’s workplace. It appears that the writer is image of hermit, that is, he is a sort of absolute seeker
