Estudo experimental da utilização do gás HHO como combustível auxiliar em motores de combustão interna

Este trabalho contém um estudo experimental para a obtenção e a validação de um combustível à base de água, obtido através da eletrolise desta e denominado de HHO (Gás de Brown), a ser utilizado como auxiliar na queima de hidrocarbonetos dos demais combustíveis fósseis e de fontes renováveis como o álcool hidratado (etanol). Para a realização deste trabalho foi utilizado um eletrolisador composto por placas de aço inox 316L e eletrólito à base de hidróxido de potássio, conjunto este de eletrólito em sua concentração ideal, material de construção do eletrolisador determinado através de estudo prévio em bibliografia. Posto o sistema em funcionamento, realizado a análise exergética da composição e do gás gerado, onde se verificou a existência de energia disponível para gerar trabalho útil e que o maior desperdício se encontrava na potência elétrica utilizada para a produção do gás. Após esta validação o gás foi submetido a testes em dinamômetro de desempenho e emissões com motores de combustão interna com deslocamento de 1,6 litros, porém com configurações diferentes de alimentação. Para que os dados refletissem a utilização de maior demanda de combustível, como no trânsito urbano, foram escolhidas as rotações de 1500rpm, 2500rpm e 3500rpm, com aberturas de borboleta em dois estágios, total 100% e abertura parcial a 40%. As variáveis controladas foram a potência, o torque, o consumo instantâneo de combustível, o fator lambda (λ) e a emissão dos gases CO, CO2 e HC. Em ambos os testes, aberturas total e parcial, com suas respectivas particularidades de no sistema de alimentação, foram apresentadas tendências de melhora em desempenho e reduções de emissões, devido aos valores obtidos estarem dentro das incertezas de medição no caso do sistema de alimentação por carburador e combustível principal o álcool hidratado, contudo no caso do sistema de alimentação por injeção eletrônica programável à gasolina comercial, com injeção de gás individualizada os resultados apresentados ficaram moderadamente acima das incertezas de medição. Entretanto, o sistema utilizado no experimento com gasolina + HHO e injeção programável, apresentou uma redução de emissões de CO em 26,4% (abertura parcial) e 18,6% (abertura total), reduzindo as emissões de HC em 16% (abertura parcial) e 14,5% (abertura total) e, por sua vez, o consumo de combustível reduziu em 29,6%. / This work contains an experimental study to obtain and validate a water-based fuel obtained through the electrolysis of this one and denominated HHO (Brown Gas), to be used as an auxiliary in the hydrocarbon burning of other fossil fuels and renewable sources such as hydrated alcohol (ethanol). For this work, an electrolyzer composed of 316L stainless steel plates and electrolyte based on potassium hydroxide was used, this electrolyte assembly in its ideal concentration, electrolyte construction material determined through a previous bibliography study. After the system was in operation, the exergy analysis of the composition and generated gas was performed, where the existence of available energy to generate useful work was verified and that the greatest waste was in the electric power used for the production. After this validation the gas was submitted to dynamometer tests of performance and emissions with engines of internal combustion with displacement of 1.6 liters, but with different feeding configurations. For the data to reflect the use of higher fuel demand, such as in urban traffic, the revolutions of 1500rpm, 2500rpm and 3500rpm were chosen, with twostage butterfly apertures, total 100% and partial opening at 40%. The variables controlled were power, torque, instantaneous fuel consumption, lambda factor (λ) and emission of CO, CO2 and HC gases. In both tests, total and partial openings, with their respective peculiarities of the feed system, presented trends of improvement in performance and emission reductions, due to the values obtained being within the uncertainties of measurement in the case of the carburetor feed system and the main fuel is the hydrated alcohol, however in the case of the commercial gasoline programmable electronic fuel injection system with individualized gas injection the presented results were moderately above the measurement uncertainties. However, the system used in the experiment with gasoline + HHO and programmable injection showed a reduction of CO emissions by 26.4% (partial opening) and 18.6% (total opening), reducing HC emissions by 16% ( partial opening) and 14.5% (total opening) and, in turn, fuel consumption decreased by 29.6%.

The subject of this Master Thesis is construction of hydrogen generator for automotive industry. The objective is to design system which is able to produce required amount of gas. The master thesis includes basic analysis of situation, mathematical equations of electrolytic process and procedure of mechanical design according required power of generator. The next part is design of power control system of hydrogen generator based on informations from automobile. The last part describes power supply of whole system with electric energy. The output of the Master Thesis is the whole design of hydrogen generator including sensor system and control system. The thesis also includes suggestions for next improvements and research.

Résolution numérique d'équations aux dérivées partielles à coefficients variables / Numerical resolution of partial differential equations with variable coefficients

Cette thèse aborde différents aspects de la résolution numérique des Equations aux Dérivées Partielles.Le premier chapitre est consacré à l'étude de la méthode Mixed High-Order (MHO). Il s'agit d'une méthode mixte de dernière génération permettant d'obtenir des approximations d'ordre arbitraire sur maillages généraux. Le principal résultat obtenu est l'équivalence entre la méthode MHO et une méthode primale de type Hybrid High-Order (HHO).Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous appliquons la méthode MHO/HHO à des problèmes issus de la mécanique des fluides. Nous considérons d'abord le problème de Stokes, pour lequel nous obtenons une discrétisation d'ordre arbitraire inf-sup stable sur maillages généraux. Des estimations d'erreur optimales en normes d'énergie et L2 sont proposées. Ensuite, nous étudions l'extension au problème d'Oseen, pour lequel on propose une estimation d'erreur en norme d'énergie où on trace explicitement la dépendance du nombre de Péclet local.Dans le troisième chapitre, nous analysons la version hp de la méthode HHO pour le problème de Darcy. Le schéma proposé permet de traiter des maillages généraux ainsi que de faire varier le degré polynomial d'un élément à l'autre. La dépendance de l'anisotropie locale du coefficient de diffusion est tracée explicitement dans l'analyse d'erreur en normes d'énergie et L2.La thèse se clôture par une ouverture sur la réduction de problèmes de diffusion à coefficients variables. L'objectif consiste à comprendre l'impact du choix de la formulation (mixte ou primale) utilisée pour la projection sur l'espace réduit sur la qualité du modèle réduit. / This Ph.D. thesis deals with different aspects of the numerical resolution of Partial Differential Equations.The first chapter focuses on the Mixed High-Order method (MHO). It is a last generation mixed scheme capable of arbitrary order approximations on general meshes. The main result of this chapter is the equivalence between the MHO method and a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) primal method.In the second chapter, we apply the MHO/HHO method to problems in fluid mechanics. We first address the Stokes problem, for which a novel inf-sup stable, arbitrary-order discretization on general meshes is obtained. Optimal error estimates in both energy- and L2-norms are proved. Next, an extension to the Oseen problem is considered, for which we prove an error estimate in the energy norm where the dependence on the local Péclet number is explicitly tracked.In the third chapter, we analyse a hp version of the HHO method applied to the Darcy problem. The resulting scheme enables the use of general meshes, as well as varying polynomial orders on each face.The dependence with respect to the local anisotropy of the diffusion coefficient is explicitly tracked in both the energy- and L2-norms error estimates.In the fourth and last chapter, we address a perspective topic linked to model order reduction of diffusion problems with a parametric dependence. Our goal is in this case to understand the impact of the choice of the variational formulation (primal or mixed) used for the projection on the reduced space on the quality of the reduced model.

A Mechanical Development of a Dry Cell to Obtain HHO from Water Electrolysis

Calculations and technical specifications of the materials used for implementation are supported by mathematical, physical and chemical formulas and theories (Faraday´s Law, electrolysis process and mechanical design). The importance of mechanical design is focused on achieving efficient use of the energy provided to the cell that allows the H2 and O2 molecules to be separated without overheating the cell, evaporating the water, loss of current due to the geometry of the electrodes (Foucault Current). Moreover, choosing materials for proper implementation and physical robustness is mandatory. In addition, the mechanical design is not justified in different articles. Nevertheless, the mechanical design of the cell and the efficiency in the production of HHO are related. Therefore, the mechanical design and the calculations were performed, as well as the construction of the dry cell to obtain HHO. The results of the implementation and production were placed and compared with what theoretically the dry cell should produce from the law of Faraday. Finally, the volumetric flow of HHO obtained was 2.70 L per minute. It means a production efficiency of 98.68%. It is higher than the majority of the dry cells. / Revisión por pares

Foram utilizadas misturas de óleo vegetal de palma com diesel e gás hidrogênio produzido via eletrolise da água. As misturas utilizadas como combustível foram formadas de 20% óleo de palma e 80% óleo diesel. Foi injetado no ar de admissão do motor o gás HHO produzido por uma célula eletrolítica. Os resultados experimentais mostram que a corrente elétrica influencia diretamente a produção de gás HHO, permitindo que o controle da quantidade de gás seja feito pelo ajuste da corrente elétrica. Utilizando a mistura diesel/óleo vegetal com a injeção de gás HHO no ar de admissão, identificaram-se redução no consumo específico de combustível, reduções nas emissões de CO, HC e CO2, conforme aumento da quantidade de gás HHO injetado. Esses resultados alcançados irão promover reduções significativas no consumo de óleo diesel e nas emissões dos gases de exaustão dos grupos geradores de usinas termoelétricas do sistema isolado. / This work analyzes the use of alternative sources of energy to reduce the consumption of diesel oil in the diesel power plants of the isolated system. Blends of palm oil with diesel and hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis of water were used. The blends used as fuel were composed of 20% palm oil and 80% diesel oil. The HHO gas produced by an electrolytic cell was injected into the engine intake air. The experimental results show that the electric current directly influences the production of HHO gas, allowing the control of the amount of gas to be made by the adjustment of the electric current. Using the diesel / vegetable oil mixture with the HHO gas injection in the intake air, we identified reduction in specific fuel consumption, reductions in CO, HC and CO2 emissions as the amount of HHO gas injected increased. These results will lead to significant reductions in diesel oil consumption and exhaust gas emissions from the generator sets of thermoelectric power plants in the isolated system.

Direct guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds with quasi-optimal adaptive mesh-refinement

Garantierte untere Eigenwertschranken (GLB) für elliptische Eigenwertprobleme partieller Differentialgleichungen sind in der Theorie sowie in praktischen Anwendungen relevant. Auf Grund des Rayleigh-Ritz- (oder) min-max-Prinzips berechnen alle konformen Finite-Elemente-Methoden (FEM) garantierte obere Schranken. Ein Postprocessing nichtkonformer Methoden von Carstensen und Gedicke (Math. Comp., 83.290, 2014) sowie Carstensen und Gallistl (Numer. Math., 126.1, 2014) berechnet GLB. In diesen Schranken ist die maximale Netzweite ein globaler Parameter, das kann bei adaptiver Netzverfeinerung zu deutlichen Unterschätzungen führen. In einigen numerischen Beispielen versagt dieses Postprocessing für lokal verfeinerte Netze komplett. Diese Dissertation präsentiert, inspiriert von einer neuen skeletal-Methode von Carstensen, Zhai und Zhang (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 58.1, 2020), einerseits eine modifizierte hybrid-high-order Methode (m=1) und andererseits ein allgemeines Framework für extra-stabilisierte nichtkonforme Crouzeix-Raviart (m=1) bzw. Morley (m=2) FEM. Diese neuen Methoden berechnen direkte GLB für den m-Laplace-Operator, bei denen eine leicht überprüfbare Bedingung an die maximale Netzweite garantiert, dass der k-te diskrete Eigenwert eine untere Schranke für den k-ten Dirichlet-Eigenwert ist. Diese GLB-Eigenschaft und a priori Konvergenzraten werden für jede Raumdimension etabliert. Der neu entwickelte Ansatz erlaubt adaptive Netzverfeinerung, die für optimale Konvergenzraten auch bei nichtglatten Eigenfunktionen erforderlich ist. Die Überlegenheit der neuen adaptiven FEM wird durch eine Vielzahl repräsentativer numerischer Beispiele illustriert. Für die extra-stabilisierte GLB wird bewiesen, dass sie mit optimalen Raten gegen einen einfachen Eigenwert konvergiert, indem die Axiome der Adaptivität von Carstensen, Feischl, Page und Praetorius (Comput. Math. Appl., 67.6, 2014) sowie Carstensen und Rabus (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 55.6, 2017) verallgemeinert werden. / Guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds (GLB) for elliptic eigenvalue problems of partial differential equation are of high relevance in theory and praxis. Due to the Rayleigh-Ritz (or) min-max principle all conforming finite element methods (FEM) provide guaranteed upper eigenvalue bounds. A post-processing for nonconforming FEM of Carstensen and Gedicke (Math. Comp., 83.290, 2014) as well as Carstensen and Gallistl (Numer. Math., 126.1,2014) computes GLB. However, the maximal mesh-size enters as a global parameter in the eigenvalue bound and may cause significant underestimation for adaptive mesh-refinement. There are numerical examples, where this post-processing on locally refined meshes fails completely. Inspired by a recent skeletal method from Carstensen, Zhai, and Zhang (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 58.1, 2020) this thesis presents on the one hand a modified hybrid high-order method (m=1) and on the other hand a general framework for an extra-stabilized nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart (m=1) or Morley (m=2) FEM. These novel methods compute direct GLB for the m-Laplace operator in that a specific smallness assumption on the maximal mesh-size guarantees that the computed k-th discrete eigenvalue is a lower bound for the k-th Dirichlet eigenvalue. This GLB property as well as a priori convergence rates are established in any space dimension. The novel ansatz allows for adaptive mesh-refinement necessary to recover optimal convergence rates for non-smooth eigenfunctions. Striking numerical evidence indicates the superiority of the new adaptive eigensolvers. For the extra-stabilized nonconforming methods (a generalization of) known abstract arguments entitled as the axioms of adaptivity from Carstensen, Feischl, Page, and Praetorius (Comput. Math. Appl., 67.6, 2014) as well as Carstensen and Rabus (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 55.6, 2017) allow to prove the convergence of the GLB towards a simple eigenvalue with optimal rates.
