Tucker, Royal Cullen 01 January 1995 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which minority students in the Peralta Community College District in California, specifically, Merritt College have succeeded in gaining access to Merritt College and whether Merritt is providing needed remedial and other pertinent services/programs, necessary for the success of minority students enrolled in the institution. Merritt College in the Peralta Community College District was selected for this study because the Peralta District has a reputation for providing quality education along with innovative programs. A survey was designed in an attempt to ascertain students' perceptions of the importance and satisfaction with remedial and supportive services/programs that were available at Merritt College. The Statistical Package for the Social Science Computer Program was used to calculate FREQUENCIES, CROSSTABS and CHI SQUARES. The findings indicate that the majority of students felt open admission was very important or important in assisting students in accomplishing their goals. The findings also revealed that students felt that supportive services were important in community colleges. It was also indicated that students felt that it was important to have minority representation on the faculty and staff. The findings revealed that students were satisfied with the supportive services/programs and related work experience or internship programs at Merritt College.

História da Matemática no ensino fundamental : usos em sala de aula pelo professor de matemática da rede municipal de Aracaju/SE / HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Uses classroom math teacher at the municipal Aracaju / Se.

Guimarães, Marcos Denilson 16 April 2011 (has links)
This article presents the results of a survey whose aim was to identify whether or how the Mathematics teachers of municipal schools in Aracaju make use of the History of Mathematics to deal with mathematical contents on the final years of Junior High School. In order to accomplish such a task, first it was identified the subjects through the intersection between the names of the students who attended the subject History of Education at Universidade Federal de Sergipe - UFS, and the names of the teachers who had taught at municipal schools in 2010. From a quantity of 37 students who met the above criteria, 19 semi structured interviews were made with the group. In addition, two professors of the subject History of Mathematics, offered for the graduates in Mathematics at UFS, were also interviewed. In this case, the aim was to identify the historical contents presented in the course plans in an attempt to establish the same theoretical bases in relation to the contents and the way how they were studied by the teachers of the municipal schools in Aracaju. As theoretical foundation, it was adopted the authors: Fauvel (1997) to differentiate between history of mathematics written with initial capitals and lower case with initial Feliciano (2008), Miguel (1997), Miguel e Miorim (2008) about the uses of history of mathematics in the classroom e Valente (2007) to the treatment of sources. Based on the data collected, it is possible to affirm that most teachers use the History of Mathematics in the classroom. In relation to how, the most frequent use is the History of Mathematics as teaching resources, tied to the use as motivation, as curiosity, as explanation of the why. In these cases, the main role performed by the teacher is to present the contents and the historical information. The confirmation of this is in the verbs used, such as: to count, to explain and to cite, considered as indicative that the teachers adopt the model of lecture and the historical information as a form of explaining some why, which contributed to the students to become not only listeners in face of the knowledge which are passed on them. The result of this survey is an indicative that as soon as possible, it should be made an investment on other surveys in order to experiment the use of the History of Mathematics as a teaching methodology in which the historical information is the starting point to teach mathematical contents.

BORDER CROSSINGS: US CONTRIBUTIONS TO SASKATCHEWAN EDUCATION, 1905-1937

Alcorn, Kerry 01 January 2008 (has links)
Traditional histories of Canadian education pursue an east/west perspective, with progress accompanying settlement westward from Ontario. This history of Saskatchewan education posits, instead, a north-south perspective, embracing the US cultural routes for the province’s educational development from 1905 until 1937. I emphasize the transplantation of US Midwestern and Plains culture to the province of Saskatchewan through cultural transfer of agrarian movements, political forms of revolt, and through adopting shared meanings of democracy and the relationship of the West relative to the East. Physiographic similarities between Saskatchewan and the American Plains fostered similar moralistic political cultures and largely identical solutions to identical problems. This larger cultural transfer facilitated developments in Saskatchewan K-12 education that paralleled movements in the US milieu through appropriating into the province’s system of schooling American teachers into classrooms, American school textbooks, teacher training textbooks written in the US, and through the pursuit of American graduate training by Saskatchewan Normal School instructors. This resulted in the articulation in the US and Saskatchewan of a “rural school problem,” consolidation as its only solution, and the transplantation of a language of school reform identified by Herbert Kliebard as “social efficiency.” The invitation issued by the government of Saskatchewan in 1917 to an American expert on rural schooling, Harold Foght, to survey the province’s system of schooling and make recommendations for its reform, marked a high point in American influence in the province of Saskatchewan’s system of schooling. In higher education the province’s sole university, the University of Saskatchewan, mirrored even more closely American Midwestern and Plains models. Essentially, the U of S was a transplanted version of the University of Wisconsin. Under the guidance of the University’s first President, Walter C. Murray, the “Wisconsin idea” permeated the practice and meaning of his University. His persistent pursuit of Carnegie Foundation financial support throughout his tenure meant Murray had to pattern his university after its American antecedents. Though Murray largely failed to gain substantial financial support for the U of S, the result was a university identical to many American land grant and public universities.

Management education in England : the Urwick Report

Bryan, Yvette January 2009 (has links)
This study provides a contribution to the historiography of management education in England. Criticism of British management expressed in Government policy over the past sixty years has concluded that a low level of management education in the UK is affecting its ability to compete. To this end there have been a number of government interventions in management education. The focus of this research is the first phase of government intervention in management education initiated in 1945. By considering the development of management education from a historical perspective this research adopts the theoretical stance that an understanding of the past can contribute to an understanding of management education today. The report of a committee on Education for Management appointed in 1945 by the Minister of Education, the Urwick Report (1947) and the subsequent Diploma in Management Studies (DMS), the first qualification in management studies, are used as vehicles to articulate the involvement and relationships of industry and government with regard to formal management education. From this, conclusions are drawn about the professional and policy processes at play and consideration given as to how these shaped subsequent practice. The method adopted was documentary analysis of primary sources which included published and unpublished administrative papers from government archives. Data from journals, a newspaper, and the archives of employee and employer bodies were referenced to provide context and support the validity of my interpretation. I conclude that the key contribution which the Urwick Report made to management education was in establishing the principle that there was a body of knowledge associated with management. The study illuminates policy processes surrounding management education at a particular time with regard to a specific report. During this period opportunities existed that, if actioned, could have significantly changed the education of managers in England. Government, industry and education were all party to these opportunities. Events surrounding the Urwick Report, and the subsequent implementation of the DMS, offer some useful lessons from the past.
