Kritpipor, tobak och Västergarn : historik och arkeologisk funktion / Clay pipes, tobaco and Västergarn : history and archeological function

Jibbefors, Tony January 2013 (has links)
This essay represents a chronological and contextual analysis of clay pipes that have been found in the urban settlement of Västergarn during seminary excavations between 2006 – 2012, conducted by Gotland University. Clay pipes can be dated closely and are useful means for dating and interpreting archaeological contexts from the early modern period, such as house foundations. There have been excavated four house foundations in Västergarn with different sorts of clay pipes dating to the post-medieval period. Can they tell which people used them or which country they were produced? By discussing the meaning of clay pipes in early modern society on Gotland this essay tries to answer these questions.

Vivesholm : djurbenen belyser den gotländska medeltida borgens husdjurshållning samt husgrundernas användningsområden / Vivesholm : animal bones elucidate the medieval castle on Gotland, its animal husbandry and the house foundations.

Gustavsson, Sara January 2011 (has links)
The castle Vivesholm is located about two miles north of Klintehamn on the west side of Gotland. The castle was built around year 1395 and burned down in the end of the 14thcentury. Around the 17th and the 18th century the castle was re-used. However, the emphasis on its use is during the middle ages. This paper aims at getting an insight in the animal husbandry at Vivesholm by analyzing the osteological material. The analysis revealed that bones from sheep/goat were more common than bones from cattle. This means the inhabitants most probably eat meat from smaller herbivores more often than meat from cattle. Pigs have also been consumed at the castle but not in the same extent as sheep/goat and cattle. Hunting as well as fishing hasn’t had a significant role for the inhabitants of Vivesholm, at least not in terms of bones found from e.g. game and fish. The inhabitants of the castle probably had its own stock but also a supply of meat products from elsewhere. Further aim with this paper was to illustrate the use of the house foundations at Vivesholm. For this, the result from the osteological analysis was compared with the archaeological finds. The analysis revealed that Vivesholm probable were built to be in use for a long period, but when the castle was burned down in the end of the 14thcentury, the castle had an abrupt end. The different foundations, both within and outside the dyke, have been interpreted into a smithy, a storehouse, a house for cooking and a lodging house. Inside the northern parts of the castle there was a place for butchery and most of the osteological material comes from this place.

Två rum och kök : En jämförande studie om medeltida bokultur på Gotlands landsbygd / Two rooms and a kitchem : A comparative study about medieval dwelling culture on the gotlandic countryside

Eriksson, Albin January 2016 (has links)
Medieval dwelling houses of a similar type have been documented on Gotland in archaeological investigations. They all have common planning, a rectangular house foundation divided into two rooms and a square-shaped fireplace which is located in one of the corners. In this study the aim is to find out when this type of building was first introduced on Gotland as well as why it was adopted. Another aim is to compare the gotlandic houses with similar buildings from other places in Scandinavia? The method used to answer these questions consists of a comparison between visually similar houses from Gotland and the mainland based on orientation, dimensions, construction and dating. The comparison shows that the majority of the foundations investigated frequently are oriented west east, that the average dimensions are approximately 8 × 6 m and that the houses approximately can be dated between the 12th and 13th century.

"Rummet mellan rummen" : En studie om keramiken från Buttle Änge / "The Space between the spaces" : A study of the pottery from Buttle Änge

Johnsson, Sara January 2018 (has links)
The Iron age settlement of Buttle Änge is located on the island of Gotland (Sweden), in the inland south of the medieval town Visby. The Stonehouse foundations on the site have been the focus for the University of Uppsala Campus Gotland archeological excavation since 2013. This paper aims to present a study of the pottery found in the Stonehouse foundations and the spaces between the houses from the excavations 2014-2016. The intention is to map and comprehend the Buttle ceramics. In order to accomplish the intended purpose and questions, I have defined and categorized the ceramics in different ceramic types based on color and minerals alterations in the clay, as well as other defining features to investigate the craft and the archaeological structures. The ceramic ware is evaluated by certain restrictions intended for obtaining a relative dating for the houses, which can provide an increased insight into the locations relationships to other Stonehouse foundations. The houses display many similarities with both foundations and construction, the difficulty has been to establish a chronology.   The focus has been on ceramics rather than on the Stonehouse foundations, which has resulted in 21 different ceramic types, based on color and minerals variations in the clay. In the documentation of the material, both archaeological and handicraft markers have been considered. This is where the pottery is both a source of information for the archaeologists, but also a craft that possesses information. By trying to put the ceramics into its context, it becomes possible to get an understanding of how it has changed and developed. The pottery has then been compared with Vallhagar (Fröjel, Gotland), to see if the material from Buttle is of the same style and shape. Different markers have since been compared with the Vallhagar material, which has given deeper understanding for a chronology, but also that there are similarities that indicate that there has been a know-how to produce the ceramic. Although there are minor details that have changed in the vessel's markers, it may be crucial for the chronology. The change may have been for practical reasons, but also for social reasons, and we need to know the significance of the change before we can see the chronological value. The study of pottery can hopefully give a wide-ranging understanding of the Stonehouse foundations timelines and the iron age people’s daily life.

This thesis investigates through participant observation applied arts workshops for young offenders in the fulfillment of socio educative measures - a special education context - at female units at Foundation CASA (HOUSE) Complex called "Chiquinha Gonzaga" in the period from 2011 to 2012. Analyze this scenario as "social drama" using tools of Anthropology of Performance as a research methodology focusing mainly on the steps proposed by Victor Turner (1987) for understanding the childcare setting and dramatic process driven by the teenager. Ethnographic research with young offenders, allowed to observe, describe, document and analyze audiovisual form of the aesthetic attitude, communication skills, fluency and expression scenic body movement considering the notion of "performance", the "six points of contact "and the concept of "restored behavior" proposed by Richard Schechner (1985). The performance of these adolescents is investigated both in preparation for the theater workshops, through the trainings and participation in public performances, as in later times in and out of the units, their gestures and postures in the ritualized body. Later analysis of this process suggests a "script" of artistic work allowing reread, construct and deconstruct characters, using their life stories as support for creation of narratives and scenic improvisation / Mestrado / Artes Cenicas / Mestra em Artes
