Evaluation, analysis, and application of HF radar wave and current measurements

Lopez, Guiomar January 2017 (has links)
This study investigates the accuracy of the wave products retrieved by a 12-MHz high-frequency (HF) phased-array radar, and establishes their potential to characterise wave-current interactions. The two stations composing the system were deployed in 2011 to overlook the Wave Hub, a test site for marine renewable energy devices located on the south-western coast of the United Kingdom. The system was conceived and configured to reduce the inaccuracies introduced by short time averaging and minimal overlap between stations, both associated with the most traditional HF radar deployments, whose primary activity is current measurement. Wave spectra were retrieved by two independent inversion algorithms, which were evaluated both independently and relative to each other. This process helped determining the errors associated to the algorithm used, and differentiated them from those inherent to the radar technology itself. The first method investigated was a semi-empirical algorithm distributed with Wellen Radars (WERA), which was calibrated using in situ measurements collected within the radar footprint. Evaluated through comparison against measurements acquired by three in situ devices, the results revealed estimates of significant wave height with biases below 9 cm, Pearson correlations higher than 0.9, and RMS errors that range from 29 to 44 cm. The relative error of wave energy period comparisons was within 10% for periods between 8 and 13 s, while both under- and overestimations were observed above and below that range, respectively. The validation demonstrated that when locally calibrated, the algorithm performs better than in its original form in all metrics considered. Observed discrepancies were mainly attributable to single-site estimations, antenna sidelobes, and the effect of the second-harmonic peaks of the Doppler spectrum. As opposed to the semi-empirical inversion, the second method evaluated in this work provides estimates of the full directional spectrum. Compared against the in situ measurements, the radar spectra were more spread over frequencies and directions, and had a lower energy content at the peak of the spectrum. In terms of parameter estimation, this was generally translated in a slight underestimation of wave periods, but accurate estimates of significant wave heights. Pearson correlations between these parameters and the in situ measurements for the bulk of the spectrum were higher than 0.9, and both types of measurements resulted in similar standard deviations. The inversion algorithm showed a high skill estimating mean wave directions, which revealed linear correlations higher than 0.8, when compared to the in situ devices. Overall, the inversion algorithm has shown to be capable of providing accurate estimates of directional spectra and the parameters derived from them, and at present the main drawback of the method is the data return, which due to the high data quality requirements of the algorithm, did not exceed 55% over the 8-month period studied here. In the second part of this work, the validated measurements were examined to determine their ability to reproduce the effects of wave-current interactions. The fine structure of the surface current was first evaluated, and revealed a circulation dominated by tides. The residual flow was seen to respond to the wind, as well as to the stratification present in the area during the spring and summer months. These data were then used to assess their contribution to wave refraction over the radar domain. The results show modulations in the wave phase parameters, which resulted from both the temporal and spatial derivatives of the surface current velocities. The evaluation of HF radar wave measurements provided in this work has shown that, properly configured, this technology can produce accurate estimates of several statistical descriptors of the wave field. Together with the highly accurate surface currents also measured by this device, the spatial wave data obtained has proved to have great potential for studying wave-current interactions; a skill that can be of support to coastal wave modelling.

Thinking of the trans* subjectivities beyond the pathological medical gaze, this dissertation reflects, through an ethnographic view, the existence of trans* people from the support group to trans* people of the Hospital Universitário de Brasília (HUB) - DF. Starting from his life stories, this work addresses the dimension of self-recognition as a trans * and its relation to the body, sexuality, trans-activism, and the health-disease process in the daily life of eight trans people. Binary gender norms cross the lives of trans* people making us rethink what it is to be "woman/man". Therefore, the desire to fit in ideas considered universal of what is considered feminine/masculine appears, but at the same time in which transgressions of these models, through the subjectivities lived of singular way by each person. Thus, conceptions of body, sexuality, health, disease and the desire to become part of trans* social movements are built in a constant fit and break of binary norms of gender. The stories here worked out portray this background.

Quantitative comparison of SensibleThings and Microsoft Azure IoT Hub

Jiang, Yiliang January 2016 (has links)
With the development of the Internet-of-Things, more and more IoT platforms come up with different structures and characteristics. Making balance of their advantages and disadvantages, we should choose the suitable platform in differ- ent scenarios. For this project, I make comparison of a cloud-based centralized platform, Microsoft Azure IoT hub and a fully distributed platform, Sensi- bleThings. Quantitative comparison is made for performance by 2 scenarios, messages sending speed adds up, devices lie in different location. General com- parison is made for security, utilization and the storage. Finally I draw the con- clusion that SensibleThings performs more stable when a lot of messages push- es to the platform. Microsoft Azure has better geographic expansion. For gener- al comparison, Microsoft Azure IoT hub has better security. The requirement of local device for Microsoft Azure IoT hub is lower than SensibleThings. The SensibleThings are open source and free while Microsoft Azure follow the con- cept “pay as you go” with many throttling limitations for different editions. Microsoft is more user-friendly.

Administratörsverktyg för IOT-enheter / Administrator Tool for IOT-Devices

Wahlman, Johan January 2015 (has links)
IoT (Internet of Things) are devices which are usually equipped with different kinds of sensors, these sensor values are then sent to a server where these values are somehow processed. It’s predicted that the usage of IoT devices will increase significantly during the upcoming years.   Microsoft has a service named Azure IoT Hub, which is designed for easy administration of IoT devices, but Azure IoT Hub provides no user interface to administer these IoT devices. The task of this project is to create a user interface for Azure IoT Hub.

Rudolph, Theres 28 April 2021 (has links)
Emergence of Collective Behaviors in Hub-Based Colonies using Grammatical Evolution and Behavior Trees

Neupane, Aadesh 01 February 2019 (has links)
Animals such as bees, ants, birds, fish, and others are able to efficiently perform complex coordinated tasks like foraging, nest-selection, flocking and escaping predators without centralized control or coordination. These complex collective behaviors are the result of emergence. Conventionally, mimicking these collective behaviors with robots requires researchers to study actual behaviors, derive mathematical models, and implement these models as algorithms. Since the conventional approach is very time consuming and cumbersome, this thesis uses an emergence-based method for the efficient evolution of collective behaviors. Our method, Grammatical Evolution algorithm for Evolution of Swarm bEhaviors (GEESE), is based on Grammatical Evolution (GE) and extends the literature on using genetic methods to generate collective behaviors for robot swarms. GEESE uses GE to evolve a primitive set of human-provided rules, represented in a BNF grammar, into productive individual behaviors represented by Behavior Tree (BT). We show that GEESE is generic enough, given an initial grammar, that it can be applied to evolve collective behaviors for multiple problems with just a minor change in objective function. Our method is validated as follows: First, GEESE is compared with state-of-the-art genetic algorithms on the canonical Santa Fe Trail problem. Results show that GEESE outperforms the state-of-the-art by a)~providing better solutions given sufficient population size while b)~utilizing fewer evolutionary steps. Second, GEESE is used to evolve collective swarm behavior for a foraging task. Results show that the evolved foraging behavior using GEESE outperformed both hand-coded solutions as well as solutions generated by conventional Grammatical Evolution. Third, the behaviors evolved for single-source foraging task were able to perform well in a multiple-source foraging task, indicating a type of robustness. Finally, with a minor change to the objective function, the same BNF grammar used for foraging can be shown to evolve solutions to the nest-maintenance and the cooperative transport tasks.
