Free access to scientific literature and its influence on the publishing activity in developing countries: The effect of Sci-Hub in the field of mathematics

Buehling, Kilian, Geissler, Matthias, Strecker, Dorothea 22 February 2024 (has links)
This paper investigates whether free access to scientific literature increases the participation of under-represented groups in scientific discourse. To this end, we aggregate and match data tracing access to Sci-Hub, a widely used black open access (OA) repository or shadow library, and publication data from the Web of Science (WoS). We treat the emergence of Sci-Hub as an exogenous event granting relatively unrestricted access to publications, which are otherwise hidden behind a paywall. We analyze changes in the publication count of researchers from developing countries in a given journal as a proxy for general participation in scientific discourse. Our results indicate that in the exemplary field of mathematics, free access to academic knowledge is likely to improve the representation of authors from developing countries in international journals. Assuming the desirability of greater international diversity in science (e.g., to generate more original work, reproduce empirical findings in different settings, or shift the research focus toward topics that are overlooked by researchers from more developed countries), our findings lend evidence to the claim of the OA movement that scientific knowledge should be free and widely distributed.

Nordqvist, Jasmine January 2016 (has links)

Hub Proteins, Paralogs, and Unknown Proteins in Bacterial Interaction Networks

Sakhawalkar, Neha 01 January 2017 (has links)
Proteins are the functional units of cells. However, a major portion of the proteome does not have a known functional annotation. This dissertation explores protein -protein interactions, involving these uncharacterized or unknown function proteins. Initially, protein – protein interactions were tested and analyzed for paralogous proteins in Escherichia coli. To expand this concept further and to get an overview, protein – protein interactions were analyzed using ‘comparative interactomics’ for four pathogenic bacterial species including Escherichia coli, Yersinia pestis, Vibrio cholerae and Staphylococcus aureus. This approach was used to study unknown function protein pairs as well as to focus on uncharacterized hub proteins. The dissertation aims at using protein – protein interactions along with other research data about proteins as a possible approach to narrow down on functions of proteins.

A importância da integração física internacional para o desenvolvimento intrarregional da Amazônia: um olhar ao eixo Amazonas / The importance of international physical integration for the intrarregional development of the Amazon: a look at the Amazon axis

Passos, Thais Virga 27 January 2015 (has links)
The expansion of transport infrastructure plays an important and prominent role in state planning in South America in the twentieth century. In this context, the look increasing about resources of the Amazon area, as well as its strategic position for greater regional integration makes this area as a major development borders in world. In this work, we will redeem important geopolitical and economic studies arguing since the first chapter about the importance of physical integration through the intermodal transport for intra-regional development in the Amazon region, which constitutes the central objective of this research. In order to accomplish this objective we developed a text with five chapters with the first one presenting to the reader the geopolitical theoretical foundation that helps us understand the dynamics of territorial physical integration, emphasizing the geopolitics of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Similarly, the second chapter contextualizes the reader to infrastructural theme for the Amazon, with valuable contributions of Bertha Becker and others who advance the theme about transport and development in this region. In the third chapter, we present the main panoramas that relate the expansion of transport infrastructure to development, explaining the recent regional initiatives of physical integration: IIRSA and the COSIPLAN. The fourth chapter then presents the Amazon Integration Axis and its structuring projects, setting our object of study. In the last chapter we advance in its characterization, in order to demonstrate in recent years the main economic relations and trade flows between the countries of the Amazon Axis, in addition we also specify the modes of transport used and the demographics aspects of the region. Thus, analyzing recent data related to these aspects together the theoretical background presented, this research hopes to contribute to studies about socioeconomic development on the Amazon area, taking into account the importance of transport infrastructure planning according to geographical, economic and social characteristics of this important and strategic region.

Foliated Transportation Systems

Hakimian, Hamed, Saeid Zandi, Mohammad January 2009 (has links)
First issue that this thesis tries to address is setting up a practical framework of foliated transportation network. Scope of this thesis limited to several cities in Sweden to illustrate that this organization can be set up and it can perform under corresponding regulations. Beside the possibility of performance it was of high importance to consider its positive effects on whole network factors from both social and industrial perspectives. For this purpose a comparison between network results for different truck fill rates carried out but practical use of results is completely dependent of the stakeholder who is going to utilize them.

Comparison between wind turbines in forestall and flat areas of Sweden

Rathinasamy, Sethupathy January 2018 (has links)
The renewable energy sources are the primary solution for energy demand in all the countries because it’s being harmless to the environment. In the short term, wind energy has the most potential among all the renewable energy technologies. In the European Union, Sweden is largely based on renewable energy for their energy demand. Sweden is one of the leading country in the EU where wind power has been growing rapidly. As wind turbines in recent time have been more and more commonly placed in forestal terrain in Sweden, it is of interest to know the difference in annual output compared to the flat terrain which was the earlier dominant terrain type for wind turbines. In this thesis, the difference between the two terrain types is investigated for a number of wind turbine models. This paper presents the study from the annual Vindstat report of the year 2015 and 2016. The data were accumulated in the Excel file and the terrain for turbine locations was classified using Google Earth. Finally, the power generation in both areas are compared by graphs and tables. The results indicate the difference in production according to the terrain and turbine rating. And it was a surprising finding that the difference between them is not more as we expected. Even more, further study is required to find the difference between in forest and flat wind turbines in all the aspects.
