Food, Eating and the Body: An Account of Women's Lived Experiences Across the Lifespan

The purpose of this study was to explore women’s subjective food and eating experiences from childhood through to adulthood and the ways in which these experiences either connected or disconnected them from their appetites for food and eating. The present study used a qualitative life history methodology, the goal of which is to assess individuals’ lived experiences to construct broader contextual meaning. In-depth interviews were used to investigate food and eating experiences among twelve women between ages 25 and 44, representing diverse social and cultural backgrounds as well as current and past eating problems. Participants took part in an open-ended interview, using a series of guided questions about their food and eating experiences from childhood through to adulthood. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for themes using the constant comparison method. Two models emerged from the data in this study that described the social factors that connected and disconnected women from their appetites and eating. The Regulating Discourses Model which outlines current ways women negotiate appetite and desire through food and eating experiences, and the Socialization through Food and Eating Model which delineates socialization processes related to food and eating during women’s development. This research may be useful for counselors, health care professionals, as well as the larger community to increase awareness on ways to maintain girls’ and women’s connection to their bodily appetites and desires throughout the lifespan.

Thesis advisor: Gorica Petrovich / Hunger and palatability modulate food intake through homeostatic and hedonic mechanisms that can work either independently, or in tandem. Both also influence food-seeking and learning about cues for food. Our prior work suggested that hunger and satiety impact motivation for palatable food differently in males and females. Sensitivity to food rewards also differs between adolescence and adulthood. Adolescents exhibit heightened motivation to consume and work for palatable food compared to adults. However, sex and age differences in palatable food motivation under sated and hungry conditions have not been explored. Here, we examined how rats consume and learn about palatable food. To assess cue-food associative learning and memory, rats underwent Pavlovian conditioning, extinction, and testing to assess the renewal of conditioned behavior. Male and female adult and adolescent Sprague Dawley rats were either food restricted (85% ad libitum body weight) or had ad libitum access to regular chow (n=8 per group). Rats learned palatable food-cue associations across 8 acquisition sessions, followed by cue-only presentations for 4 extinction sessions in a different context. They were then tested for renewal of conditioned responding (time spent at the food cup) to the food cue in the acquisition compared to extinction context. Before learning and after renewal testing, rats were tested for consumption of palatable food and chow in their home cage (1hr test/day per food). We found that adults and adolescents of both sexes were able to learn, extinguish, and renew conditioned responding regardless of hunger. Adolescents consistently had higher responding than adults across the learning and memory protocol. During consumption testing, females of both ages ate more palatable food than males, particularly when sated. Adolescent consumption was dependent on hunger state. Sated adolescents ate more palatable food than adults, and both sated adults and adolescents showed a preference for palatable food over chow. Food-deprived adolescents and adults ate similar amounts of chow, but only adults showed a preference for palatable food over chow. Palatable food consumption and conditioned responding during early acquisition training for that same food were positively correlated, indicating that hunger and satiety similarly impact palatable food-cue learning and consumption. Overall, these findings suggest that physiological hunger is not a prerequisite for successful associative learning and memory during adolescence or adulthood, and that female sensitivity to palatable food is present during adolescence. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College. Exploring the Legal Liability of Genetically Modified Organisms and their Impact on Society

Controversy surrounds the use of Genetically Modified organisms (GMOs): whether the process of developing GMOs should be allowed, and if so, how they should be labeled. Efforts by activist groups have caused food associated with GMOs to carry a stigma, but farmers across the nation are fighting to continue to grow GMO crops and maximize their yield. In the 1970’s, GMOs were credited for assisting in the attempt to defeat world hunger and had a positive image. However, there has been a recent trend toward political and consumer resistance of food items that contains GMOs. A prediction of an abrupt population increase, combined with sudden climate changes, present further complications for world hunger, and make GMOs even more essential in today’s society. Additionally, farmers must now consider certain potential legal liabilities when buying seed, planting crops, and marketing their crops. This thesis will examine United States federal and state law to review how courts have ruled on tort claims in order to determine the potential and future liabilities that farmers producing GMO crops might face. This thesis will also examine the regulations by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the federal laws they must comply with to determine if they need to be increased or if they are sufficient. Scientific studies will be used to assess the health risks associated with the consumption of GMOs and the impact they have on the environment. This thesis will also examine the First Amendment to determine how GMO foods should be labeled, so as to not interfere with consumers’ right to know if their food was genetically modified. Also, it will look at the impact labeling may have on the price of food in the United States, if mandated. Lastly, in order to understand the role that GMOs might play in the future with an increasing population, this thesis will review the work of Dr. Borlaug and how the implementation of GMOs assisted in alleviating a hunger crises in the 1970’s when the supply of food could not meet the demand.
