Fugal And Canonic Techniques In Selected Large Chorale Preludes Of Clavierübung III By J.S. Bach

Kwon, Wonjung 12 1900 (has links)
Numerous scholars have studied the Clavierübung III, but their studies mainly focused on the relationship between the chorale text and Bach♠s response in music. Analysis without explaining J.S. Bachs word painting in other chorale preludes can be found easily, but most analyses treat rhetoric, especially those dealing with Clavierübung III. There have been numerous studies linking Bach's organ works to Lutheran doctrine. However, to give a better understanding of the work's structure and its implications for performance, a contrapuntal analysis is indispensable. This study deals with an analysis focused on canonic and fugal techniques in selected large chorales, and it will provide a better understanding of Clavierbung III. For purposes of comparison with typical fugal techniques, the C minor fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier I, BWV 847, is taken as a model. This work reveals typical eighteenth-century, late Baroque fugal structure with a well-defined subject. The episode modulates through the keys of Eb major-G minor and C minor. Below is an outline of the present paper. Chapter I discusses the purpose of this study. Chapter II covers the earlier research on Clavierübung III and includes a discussion of the general background of the Clavierübung III. Chapter III provides a contrapuntal analysis of the three chorale preludes. A translation of the text will be included in each analysis.Chapter IV, the conclusion, will summarize and confirm the findings from the present study of the analysis.

DIRECTING RICHARD III

McShaffrey, Brandon January 2012 (has links)
Richard III is regarded as one of Shakespeare's longest and most complex plays, with a complicated plot, and a character that is a Machiavellian villain. After a workshop of Act I as an MFA Directing Project, I was granted by Temple University to stage a full production of Richard III as my thesis. Approaching the play proved difficult for me due to my lack of experience with Shakespearean text. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the adaptation with the goal to make the story as clear as possible, I desired to create a production that embodied the idea of "now." The designed team and I created a world that was a-historic pulling from classic and modern forms that provided the necessary landscape for the play to occur. Through a series of seven chapters I explain my process from conception to production. I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Actor's Lexicon, Program Note, Design Renderings and Production Photos support my journey to opening night of Richard III. / Theater

A CHIMERIC ANTIGEN CONSISTING OF TYPE III SECRETION PROTEINS AS A CHLAMYDIA VACCINE CANDIDATE / TYPE III SECRETION PROTEINS AS A CHLAMYDIA VACCINE CANDIDATE

Liang, Steven January 2019 (has links)
Chlamydia is the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in many developed countries, including Canada. Untreated infections in women can lead to a number of complications including pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal factor infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Public health programs, including screening for at-risk individuals, partner identification, and antibiotic treatment, have had limited success in controlling the rising incidence of chlamydial infections over the past two decades. A chlamydia vaccine that prevents infection and its pathological sequelae is the next essential step to control this persistent public health problem. Chlamydia spp. utilize the highly conserved type III secretion (T3S) system as an essential virulence factor for infection and intracellular replication. Here, we evaluated a novel chimeric antigen (BD584) consisting of three T3S proteins from C. trachomatis (CopB, CopD, and CT584) as a potential chlamydia vaccine candidate. Intranasal immunization with BD584 elicited strong humoral responses that neutralized infection in vitro. Following intravaginal challenge with C. muridarum, immunized mice had a 95% reduction in chlamydial shedding and a 87.5% reduction in incidence of upper genital tract pathology compared to control mice. BD584 immunization generated strong cell-mediated and mucosal antibody responses in mice with different genetic backgrounds, and conferred protection against an intravaginal C. trachomatis infection in two out of three strains of mice. BD584 formulated with NE01, a mucosal adjuvant known to be safe and effective in humans, was shown to be highly immunogenic and efficacious against C. trachomatis infection in mice. These results suggest that BD584 may represent a promising antigen for use in a chlamydia vaccine. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate a novel chlamydia vaccine in a mouse model of genital chlamydia infection. We engineered a fusion protein, BD584, made up of three highly conserved type III secretion (T3S) proteins CopB, CopD, and CT584. We show that vaccination with BD584 generated strong immune responses and protected mice from chlamydia infection and the associated reproductive tract disease. Interestingly, the level of protection afforded by BD584 vaccination is dependent upon the genetic background of the animal. Furthermore, we have identified particular antibody subtypes directed against BD584 as markers of BD584-mediated protective immunity. Lastly, we show that vaccination with BD584 formulated with a clinically safe and effective mucosal adjuvant generates robust immune responses and confers protection against chlamydia in mice. Together, these results provide support for the use of T3S proteins in a chlamydia vaccine.

Diskrepansen mellan WAIS-III respektive WAIS-III NI för kognitivt friska individer

Lindh, Leilani, Sjöberg, Aron January 2008 (has links)

Growth and Characterization of Indium Nitride Layers Grown by High-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition

Alevli, Mustafa 22 April 2008 (has links)
In this research the growth of InN epilayers by high-pressure chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) and structural, optical properties of HPCVD grown InN layers has been studied. We demonstrated that the HPCVD approach suppresses the thermal decomposition of InN, and therefore extends the processing parameters towards the higher growth temperatures (up to 1100K for reactor pressures of 15 bar, molar ammonia and TMI ratios around 800, and a carrier gas flow of 12 slm). Structural and surface morphology studies of InN thin layers have been performed by X-ray diffraction, low energy electron diffraction (LEED), auger electron spectroscopy (AES), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman spectroscopy, infrared reflection, transmission, photoluminescence spectroscopy studies have been carried out to investigate the structural and optical properties of InN films grown on sapphire and GaN/sapphire templates. InN layers grown on a GaN (0002) epilayer exhibit single-phase InN (0002) X-ray diffraction peaks with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) around 200 arcsec. Auger electron spectroscopy confirmed the cleanliness of the surface, and low energy electron diffraction yielded a 1×1 hexagonal pattern indicating a well-ordered surface. The plasmon excitations are shifted to lower energies in HREEL spectra due to the higher carrier concentration at the surface than in the bulk, suggesting a surface electron accumulation. The surface roughness of samples grown on GaN templates is found to be smoother (roughness of 9 nm) compared to the samples grown on sapphire. We found that the deposition sometimes led to the growth of 3 dimensional hexagonal InN pyramids. Results obtained from Raman and IR reflectance measurements are used to estimate the free carrier concentrations, which were found in the range from mid 10^18 cm-3 to low 10^20 cm-3. The optical absorption edge energy calculated from the transmission spectra is 1.2 eV for samples of lower electron concentration. The Raman analysis revealed a high-quality crystalline layer with a FWHM for the E2(high) peak around 6.9 cm^-1. The results presented in our study suggest that the optimum molar ratio might be below 800, which is due to the efficient cracking of the ammonia precursor at the high reactor pressure and high growth temperature.

The exhortation to wives in 1 Peter 3:1-7 to be submissive to their husbands : a socio-historical study / Evan Brent Connock

Connock, Evan Brent January 2000 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is centrobaric in that it gravitates toward the theory and application of the Haustafeln form, with reference to the relationship between husbands and wives as specified in the exhortation to wives in 1 Peter 3:1-7. The two-fold approach utilized in this thesis is represented as follows: Firstly, the reader is introduced to the Graeco-Roman Haustafeln genre in broad terms, which are then narrowed down to focus on Classical references to, and occurrences of, the husband/wife code. The link is then made to the development of the "embelished" or "Christianised" form of the Haustafeln. The research clearly shows the relationship between the two types of Haustafeln. Flowing out of this investigation is the contrast between the approach by the Classical Graeco-Roman authors towards women and that of Christian New Testament authors. Secondly, the findings already seen are applied to 1 Peter 3:1-7 in order to establish how the first readers/hearers of this paraenetic exhortation may have received the message. This idea is then transposed to the twenty-first century where it is then applied to women in South African churches. The findings of this research demand that the reader, irrespective of gender bear cognisance of the challenge that confronts them. In an active and explicit sense males whether engaged in matrimony or celibate, are given the mandate to treat their wives considerately and with honor. Surely, it follows that in an applicable manner men in general are to conduct themselves toward women in the same way? In a passive sense women too are faced with an exhortation to be submissive to their husbands whether the men concerned are regenerate or unregenerate. In this regard, the submission of the wife is seen as being an act of willing obedience, which is two-fold in its' application. On the first level 1 Peter 3:1-4 requires this behavior of wives married to unbelieving husbands so as to win them over to Christ. The second level represented by 1 Peter 3:5-6 expresses to Christian wives of Christian husbands their need to be submissive as Sarah was to Abraham in order that they may be holy with their hope placed in God. The idea of submission at this juncture is an expression of homage to one's husband which befits the woman of God. The implied meaning of submission in the context of 1 Peter 3: 1-7 is seen to be diametrically opposed to the Graeco-Roman understanding of the word, which lent itself to be enforced in a dominant sexist manner, which allowed husbands and men in general to autocratically lord it over women. As a direct result of the imposed domination of women by men, women were not generally regarded by a male dominant society as being equals. The primary challenge which is borne by this thesis then, is the challenge to South African society and church to erradicate behavioral practices which thrive upon incorrect, unjust and especially un-Biblical views of the relationships between men and women married or unmarried. / Thesis (M.A.)--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2000
